St. Augustinus to host Frbiba State in Playoff Opener

(SP) The NSCF playoffs are about to begin and the St. Augustinus Priests are hoping to prove that their Celestia Conference championship was no fluke. The game will be played at Civitate Dei Stadium and the winner will travel to New Koln to take on St. Martin's, the champions of the Horizon Conference. "This is what we've been waiting for. We are now one of the final 12 universities that get to compete in the NSCF Playoffs. When we entered NSCF this year, our goal was to win the championship in our first year. In order to do that, we have to win 4 games, 3 of which will likely be away from the Kingdom. While we are unhappy with our seeding and feel that we, not St. Martin's, are the best newcomer to NSCF this season, we need to prove it and the only way to do that is by defeating Frbiba State to earn a shot at the team from New Koln. Beyond that, we do not know who our opponents would be and I have no real preference in that regard. That is up to God. We just need to go out there and give it everything we have and God will see to our success." - Andreas Polus

The game is a tale of contrasts. St. Augustinus won their conference and went undefeated in non-conference games. Frbiba State were invited to the playoffs after finishing second in their conference and failing to win a single non-conference game. In fact, the Priests will not face an opponent that has a single non-conference win until a possible semi-final, since St. Martin's did not participate in non-conference games. St. Augustinus defeated 2 playoff teams during the non-conference week, including perennial championship contender Alzburg-Dyka. Now, they just need 4 more wins to be the champions of NSCF. It won't be easy, but St. Augustinus did not have an easy non-conference schedule either.

After a perfect three in non-conference play, Daniel Corsey's Utica earned a first round bye in the playoffs to go with their sixth Woodlands conference championship in eight years, and are well-positioned to make a deep playoff run once again. After the disappointment of NSCF 8, the pressure has been on for the Tigers this season. Fortunately for the Tubrissians, they generally react impressively to adversity.

"Failure isn't an option for us at times like this. We had to improve, because last season just wasn't good enough." Corsey admitted. "We haven't really mounted a serious challenge for the championship in recent years, or even really tested the contenders, but a lot of teams are still afraid of Utica. We needed to remind everyone of that. Remind everyone why nobody likes coming to The Pit."

The maturation of Michaelean quarterback Benson Stanley has been critical to the Tigers' successes this year, as he has consistently, methodically dissected defense after defense -- including the surgeon clinic against Frbiba State's perennial top ten defense at the start of the season -- to put his team in strong positions to keep picking up wins. "I'm not sure what it is, but something clicked, you know?" Stanley attempted to explain it, but couldn't quite place the "x factor" that has seen him seemingly fulfill the enormous potential former head coach Mike Zampese saw in him.

Utica's opponents in the quarter finals will be Kraian college Netteingen Tech. The Tigers have experienced mixed fortunes over the years when facing Kraians, and with the Hyenas finishing as runners up last season -- and beating the curse this season -- Corsey's men will certainly have to be on guard. "They're a good side." Defensive Co-ordinator Anthony Channa conceded. "You don't reach the championship game without some serious quality, and they certainly have that." The Tigers' coaching staff will perhaps take some solace from Netteingen Tech's defeats in Sequoia conference this season, though. Aside from their home defeat at the hands of the now-infamously inconsistent RMU, the Hyenas also fell to newcomers Vilitova. "We know there are some major weaknesses we can exploit." Channa confirmed, suggesting there has been some tape study ahead of this matchup. "We know our strengths, we know their weaknesses. We can do this."

Optimism is all well and good, but nothing is ever certain, and Daniel Corsey will make no mistake in impressing the importance of being prepared upon his players. "It's not going to be cut and dry by any means, and even though we're playing in The Pit, we need to be prepared for a championship calibre team. That's what they are. Everyone has bad days, even us. We can't take it for granted that they could turn us over. And another early playoff exit could be a serious problem for us on the recruiting front. The guys know this, they understand how important it is for us to get out there and take the next step toward a third championship. It's been too damn long."

Back to the Championship

It has been a while since we at the Port Salem Daily Star have been able to report on our dear Port Salem Anchors with the revolution and all, but none the less our team has advanced to their second NSCF championship Game in three years.

--The journey for the Anchors in seeking their second titled started against the defending champions the Alzburg-Dyka Royals a team to which we have now officially met in the post season for the fourth consecutive season, at which I don't believe that any two teams have met each other so many times in a row in the post season. We all remember our loss to them last year in the semi-finals, for the second time last year we suffered a humiliating loss to the Royals, in our first post season meeting in NSCF 6 we lost to them 33-3, last season that loss was greater 36-3. Coach Shuler once again vowed to resurrect the Anchor honor and if we ever played them again we'd beat them, and in the second round we did just that.

The NSCF 9 quarter-final re-match of last years semi game against the Royals was played at a jam packed sold out angry crowd of 58,000 at a closed roof Safeco Field. The speakers were roaring and the Royals were favorites by three points, and they were determined to make league history by trying to advance to a fourth consecutive title game, but first they had two games left before that could even happen. As the Royals took the field a roar of boos and taunting came from the stands the fan remembered last years high profile game and wanted revenge for it. When Coach Shuler and the Anchors came running out the noise inside was deafening to the point several players on both sides covered their ears. After the national anthems were played and the cheers were down, kickoff came and the Royals received the ball first.

1st Qrt
Punt/Kick returner Arne Zinoviev took the ball out of the UAD endzone and was tackled by Jermany Gers at the Royal 32, the Royal offense came onto the field and QB Marc Zotov threw a short pass to Iskander Tretiakov for six yards, the Royals next two plays had no gain.
The Anchors got the ball at their 29 yard line and Sanders handed the ball off to Horge for a loss of two yards, Sanders threw a short pass to Zinner for three yards and a short pass to DeWhite for one yard gain, and the Anchors had to punt.

Those first two possessions set the the tempo for the rest of the game, it wasn't going to be a repeat of the year before the Anchors came to play this year and weren't going to give in. By the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 0-0, neither the Anchors or the Royals could find a rythem and both struggled.

2nd Qrt
In the second quarter it was the Royals who were able to find a rythem and make it work, after two long pass by Zotov for 21 and 28 yards, helped set up FB Fyodorov for the go ahead score to put the Royals up 6-0 and the point after was good and the Royals went up 7-0. And until half time that is how the scored stayed with the Royals leading at the half 7-0.

3rd - 4th Qrts
In the third the Anchors were able to get on the board with a Sanders - DeWhite touchdown for 51 yards, the longest play on the day thus far. With the point after the score was tied up at 7-7. As with the first quarter nither team could get the ball moved, the longest any team had the ball after the Anchor touchdown was the Royals they had possession for three minutes and gained eleven yards but the Anchor defense was un-yielding.

The fourth quarter was the same, but scoreless, neither teams offense could do much, but the defenses were the heroes for both. On the day both defenses front four/three held the running game to only 67 yards and both quarter-backs had been sacked at lest four times. The game ended and went into over time.

OT

Port Salem got the ball first, but the possession yielded little, Horge ran to the Royals one yards line on a 2nd and goal, on thrid and goal Sanders was sacked for a five yard loss, which forced Shuler to go safe and kick a 18 yard field goal which was good, the Anchors took their first lead in the game at 10-7. The Royals got the ball and their possession ended the same way, however though LB Erik Dodd could have ended the game with a interception but dropped it after he was hit. So the Royals too kicked a 39 yard field goal.

2OT
In the second overtime, one the first play Sanders faked the hand off and threw a bullet pass to White for a 25 yard touchdown which put the Anchors up 16-10 with the point after 17-10. With this it brought the crowd back into the game knowing all they needed was four more plays, until victory. Zotov attempted the same play and was sacked for a loss of three, on the UAD sideline Coach Rob Troxel was lividly upset. Zotov handed it off to Fyodorov for a gain of one, third down. By this point everyone in the stands were on their feet cheering, Zotov threw a shot pass which ended incomplete, fourth down. The sheer roar of the crowd forced a false start on the Royals, Zotov ran the bootleg and threw the ball deep into the endzone where there was four Anchors and two Royals, the ball bounced around for a few seconds before falling onto the ground. And Safeco Field erupted, with nothing short of enthusiasm and the ground shook around the stadium.
--------------------------

UPS (12-1) vs Valor Coast(10-5)
--For the third time in the same season and for the first time ever in the playoffs the Cyclones and the Anchors faced off at Safeco Field to battle it out to who will earn their right to advance to the title game. On the visitors side was the Cyclones back from a one year absence from the NSCF and despite losing five game thus far have done better than many predicted. On the other side the heavily favored home team the champions of NSCF 7 attempting to punch their ticket to their second title game appearance. The Anchors only loss of the season was to Reimsburgh Tech who also won the Mineral Conference this season, but Coach Shuler and those who were part of the team that championship season hoping history would repeat.

1st Qrt
The game unlike the week before did not start slow, matter of fact on the Anchors first possession of the game Sanders took the team right down the field and scored a early touchdown. The Cyclones on their first did nothing, just like their first possession the Anchors drove right back down the filed and scored another touchdown. By this time those in the stands were expecting the game to be a blow out, however those two touchdowns were the only scores of the 1st quarter, with the Anchors leading 14-0.

2nd Qrt
In the second quarter the Cyclone defense decided it would be a good time to show up and start playing, they forced a Anchor turnover on the UPS 12 yard line, however though the Cyclone offense could do nothing with the short yardage and were forced to kick a field goal to put VCU in the game at 14-3. Even when the offense did get the ball back, even driving down the field Shuler had to keep calling on the punt team to risky to attempt a field goal and with the decision to keep the roof open far too windy with sustained wind gusts up to 54. The second quarters only score was the VCU field goal.

3rd-4th Qrt
Much like the second the second half of the game yeilded little scoring, though enough defense on both sides to keep the game relatively low scoring game, the Anchors kicked two more field goals and the Anchor D forced a saftey to put the final score of the game at 22-3.
----

Even though game wasn't as exciting as many had hoped for, the best part of it all was the fact for the second time in three years the Port Salem Anchors were headed to the NSCF Championship Game, where this time they'd be facing off against new comer who have done extremely well at coming into the title game with a 13-3 record, unlike Port Salem they hadn't the luxury of having home field advantage through out the playoffs, but despite having to face off against the number one overall seed in the NSCF playoffs, all bets are off as St Augustinus is 1.1 point favorites to win the ninth NSCF title game.

When asked about the prediction as one should expect Coach Shuler shrugged it off, saying people will bet their lives if they felt lucky enough they'd win, continuing to say, "Come on, everyone in Port Salem knows I don't care what the outside world thinks and wants, alI know is that the team, the other coaches, the fans and I do, we all want to win our second title tying the league record, we're focusing whats ahead if the other team is caring about the bets, so be it maybe it'll take them off what the real goal is."

OOC: On the occasion of the NSCF Championship Game (now un-Fluid Timed to coincide with the World Bowl XXII Championship Game), I think its time for the return of the famous aunt of the St. Augustinus captain.

Sister Polus's Thoughts

Hello, I am Sister Maria Polus and I want to welcome you to today's edition of Sister Polus's Thoughts. This is an especially happy day for me and, I believe, for all of our Kingdom. It is the eve of the World Bowl Championship Game. Earlier today, the SP reported that our Great and Wise King Paulus XV will be visiting the Free Republics to promote international goodwill. I can only applaud that. Additionally, I must, for the first time, give the nation of Cassadaigua credit for sending the monstrous and unrepentant until the end Meghan Kinson to the fires of Infernus for a well-deserved eternity of suffering. I applaud Cassadaigua for finally doing the right thing, for once, and it is little surprise that God has rewarded them with a spot in the World Bowl Championship Game against West Guiana.

The nation of West Guiana is also the home of the University of Port Salem, who will be facing my nephew Andreas and the rest of the Priests of St. Augustinus in the NSCF Championship Game, to be held on the same day. I have to say that I am proud of my nephew and I have never been more proud of him than I was when I watched him lead his team the length of the field for a game-winning touchdown against Utica with just 3 seconds remaining on the clock. With the exception of the second half of their conference schedule, when they were clearly unfocused and uninterested, something which was utterly unacceptable, St. Augustinus has been dominant during this NSCF season. During the Christmas break, I impressed upon my nephew the importance of what he was doing and just how unacceptable it is to intentionally perform at less than his best. I am hopeful that I impressed upon him the error of his ways and that this will help him avoid complacency in the most critical game of the season.

But, enough about gridiron for the moment. I have a few other pieces of news to inform you about. As you may or may not be aware, the World Baseball Classic Council has decided to open signups for their event once again and, so far, our Kingdom has not elected to sign up. However, the WBC Council is currently reporting that we are signed up, which makes me suspicious that Feministvs Sanctvsterra, the notorious international terrorist organization, has decided to sign up for the WBC while impersonating our Kingdom, just as they did during the abandoned so-called "World Cup" that would have been held in Cassadaigua and the Equestrian States. As we all know, the World Cup was eventually held in Valanora with a field of 24, the smallest ever, and was won by Mytannion. A decision on whether or not we intend to participate in the 29th edition of the WBC is expected after tomorrow's Championship Games, but I can assure all of my viewers that our Kingdom will not be represented by that team that has disgraced themselves and the name of our Kingdom on repeated occasions in the past. I have informed the King's Government of the suspicious signup and I can report that they are currently looking into it. However, rumor has it that the WBC Council intends to allow the Equestrian States to host the WBC, so it may be for the best that we have yet to enter that competition. Personally, from looking over just the umpiring section of both of the bids that they are voting on, I think the only acceptable choice at this moment is to vote to reopen the bidding process and delay the WBC. It is too early in the year to hold that competition anyway.

On a more positive note, the results of the World Cup of Hockey host vote were just announced and our Kingdom won. The final vote total was 15 for us, 5 for HopNation and 3 most wicked voters to reopen the bids. While I have nothing against HopNation, who performed fairly well in the World Bowl after winning the Baptism of Iron, I must inform everybody watching my video that I am praying that those that voted for reopening bids watch their home nations suffer for their insolence. May they lose all 9 of their games before returning home to wherever they came from. My sources in the King's Government informed me that they will be announcing details regarding the World Cup of Hockey after the World Bowl Championship Game tomorrow night. At the moment, gridiron is the most important thing, but the best hockey in the multiverse is coming to our Kingdom, soon. I am Sister Maria Polus and I thank you for watching.
