This is the first edition of the Trofeo de Paz (Peace Trophy), a basketball tournament where anything can happen!

Format (Adapted from this link)
The signed-up teams will be grouped into four groups of four teams. I will use the FIBA Competition Format where the bottom of each group of four will enter a single elimination bracket for ranking of 13th-16th placers and the top 3 will advance to a group of six, joining them is the top 3 of another group (A and B, C and D) and will face teams that they are yet to face. Records not involving the eliminated team will be carried over to the six-team group. The bottom two of each of the two groups will enter a single elimination bracket for ranking the 9th to 12th placers.

Then the top 4 of each 2 groups will enter a single-elimination bracket for ranking the quarterfinalists from 1-8. The QF's SF's and third place match will be a single game, while the final will be best of three. Losing teams will still play each other for ranking purposes in a single game.

Creativity, and quality will be the basis, but you cannot make quality RP's with two liners right? Sangti's matches will be scorinated by a third party starting the quarterfinals. Before that, Sangti will abstain from scorination. Roster posts before the matchday 1 scorinatioon will incur a 2 point RP bonus.

The scorinator that will be used is the Xkoranate 0.3.3, Basketball function. RP Cutoffs shall be between 1 pm and 3 pm Philippine time (5 am to 7 am UTC).

Sangtian IC Information

Where is Sangti?
Sangti is located in Esportiva, in the southern part of the Continent of Mardujsha*. The capital and center of government is Ciudad Sangti. There are eight regions in Sangti: Cantones, Region Capital, Olhana, Pranse, Respaña Nuevo, Respaña Viejo, Nomadia and Nuevo Nomadia. Arrival in Sangti maybe from an airplane landing in Zalesgon International Airport (known locally as Aeropuerto Internacional de Imelda Marcos), 25 kilometers away from Villa Deportes, where the Arena Nacional Sangti ls located. Teams assigned in Leonde can land in the Leonde National Airport and travel 14 kilometers to Parc Leonde.

There is a ferry service from Radi in Nuevo Nomadia to Isla Nespa, where the Arinespa is located, for the teams assigned there. There is a bullet train system in Mainland Sangti, where one can ride a train with route S-34 to Nuevavilla, where the Nuevavilla Arena is located.

Somlhus Sharks

The Somlhus squad is a team founded forty years ago, in 1974, going under the name Somlhus Basketboll Klubber. They're not only the first, but also the best side from Somlhus, the second city of Ravnar, one of the eleven islands from the Buyanese archipelago. The red and black switched names in 1991 and are now known as the Sharks. Last year, they won the very first national championship from Buyan, beating the Torspeda Toros in the final of the play-offs.

"Kamzik Poprad."
"No, your mother is a kamtsjik boprat," Davidsen quickly replied.

Werfel nodded his head slowly.

"You're a retard, Lars, Kamzik Poprad is the name of our first opponent."
"Oh."

The long centre still didn't get the complete picture. He hardly ever did, in fact, but this made him only more charming towards the fans.

"These... ehm... Boprad guys. What're they like?"
"Poprad, idiot, with a P. Well, I'll be honest with you, I don't know an awful lot about them. Hey, Munja, you've already found out something about them?"

Eelco Munja looked up from his smartphone and pushed his glasses a bit more back on his nose.

"Sorry, you said?"
"Whether," Werfel repeated, "you've already found out something about those guys from Tatras?"
"Well, Tatras is a nation that unites five member states with a gathered population of approximately ten million souls. The president goes by the name Adrian Driensky and post-grunge scores well on their national musical hitlists. Capital Poprad has a brand-new airport and is also the capital of Oravia, one of those member states I mentioned. Furthermore..."
"Munja!"
"What?"
"I didn't ask you to read their complete factbook.byn page. For all I care, they're from the capital of Royal Super-Llonopolian Kingdom of Taijeran. What are these guys worth when it comes to basketball?"
"Well, they've played the semi-finals of the Karpat Cup and came out victorious of their national league, the Extra Liga."
"Hmm..."

Werfel stroked through his trimmed beard.

"And what's the value of that?"
"Well, I'm quite sure these guys know how to play basketball. They're on the Olympics and, if I believe the press, Tatras was number one in the medal tally after the first day."
"Because they got gold in basketball?"
"Doesn't seem so... But if know their complete nation is a number one of the multiverse, plus they see their basketball team as a stronghold, plus Kamzik is the strongest team in that nation... You do the addition yourself, right?"

GUARDS
PG: Niko Montoya (18 Yrs Old, Talahita Basketball) #8
SG: Salvador Perez (28 Yrs Old, Vargas Basketball Club) #4
Recap: A pair of slashing guards with Spanish heritage. Montoya's 6'0"/175 frame doesn't matter to the dozens of guards he got by at Talahita, playing floor general for a 49-25 team that won second last season in the entire league last regular season. He had 15.4 PPG and 6.1 APG. He can keep up with the world, but the issue is: can he guard bigger guards? Perez at 6'3"/210 may have to cover for him as he's technically a point guard out of position. Perez is an established scorer and distributor and should have a big tournament.
Backups
Lars Hudson (21 Yrs Old, New Llama Wizards) #00
Michael Morris (30 Yrs Old, New Llama Wizards) #1
Jay Russell (28 Yrs Old, New Llama Cyclones) #26
The three backups all from New Llama are an interesting mix: Hudson is an eccentric who is a pure passer: a mere 9.1 points a game with 11.5 assists a contest. Morris is a scorer: 21.8 points a game. And Russell is a defensive stud whose offensive is a bit raw.
Forwards
Kristian Camayen (27 Yrs Old, Apple Valley Basketball) #9
Richard Reynolds (26 Yrs Old, FC Vargas) #11
Camayen is a sniper for the team: a 46% shooter from long-range. Reynolds is a rebounder and defender with 1.9 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.
Backups
James Purte (32 Yrs Old, Overseas) #6
Jordan Alonso (20 Yrs Old, Overseas) #20
Alex Herar (29 Yrs Old, FC Vargas) #29
Purte is physical. Playing overseas, he lead the league in personal fouls with 4.2. He has fouled out in eight playoff games, including games six and seven of the finals one year. He's lead three leagues in fouls. Alonso and Herar are pure scorers, and Alonso's in his first international tournament.
Centers
Rick Jordan (26 Yrs Old, Dinschria Basketball) #33
Jordan loves his hometown of Dinschria. The big man is a specialty rebounder and defender with a raw post game. For some reason, he's 7-for-9 all time from 40 feet or further and 1-for-21 in all other three-point tries.
Backup
Lewis Coran-Gello (42 Yrs Old, Overseas) #36
Coran-Gello is an old guy, and comics sometimes depict smiling old men in tank tops with Tiger heads and "CORAN GELLO 36" on them. But the guy can still defend.

COACH Drew Lambart (42 Yrs Old)
The Eighth Llamanean Republic
Capital: New Llama City, Population: ~56,000,000
5x World Baseball Classic champion (28, 30, 31, 40, 42)

"Welcome to Lonopolian Sports Live. I'm the newsman, Zsoni'i Zsonsson. Today, the Basketball nationalteam was notified of its grouping by its leaders, in a ceremony headed by the Muuskatchen leader. Our national team was put in group A, starting with the Dradean Suns from Sangti. We have entered tournaments against them, and they do at least decent. This is our team's 1st international match, and they are preparing. The next team in our group is the Levivania Prowlers from Levivania. They seem to have experience, unlike us. The final team in our group is the Damensakki Wolves from Darrenovia." Wait!" Says one of the producers namen Daяren Damenski'i. "I'm from there, I was at least until I was left behind when they joined the Rejected Realms. " Daяren runs up to on the screen a picture of the Darrenovian flag is. "I want to beat up them f*****s!!! NO!!!!!!" Daяren gets mobbed by guards as he is dragged away and a system error card pops up instead of the show.

Coach: Dr. Daniel Adiel (Dr. Adiel has been one of a number of promoters of New Edomite national sports, largely through the Universities, believing that it will help unite the country in peace, through promotion of sports clubs and giving small town boys and girls opportunities to excel. He was asked to coach the Fineberg Griffons two years ago and believes he has built a good team that can compete internationally and possibly form the basis of a national team)

Point Guard: Mordecai Tanon.
6,3
(He always loved to run. Even as a small child, it was common to have pictures showing him running headlong towards whatever interested him; the kind of boy growing up who never seems still. A theology major from Fineberg University, he is thinking about the priesthood but wonders if he really has the gift for celibacy! When he was growing up in the small city of Gone, Haran, it was clear that he was bound for the Haranese Christian Church, but he has seen something of a wider world since going to the University of Fineberg in the capital.)

Shooting Guard: Saul Ramah (Team Captain)
6,4
(Saul is from Padan, and comes from a traditional military family. While taking courses in military science he is mostly hoping to get an engineering degree. He is known for having excellent hand-eye coordination and has skill in marksmanship as well. He is known for having a poker face and giving little indication of what kind of shot he is going to take, and known for being equally good at a jump shot or a lay up shot.)

Small Forward: Joachim Merari
6,5
(Born in Glasstower, Bara Province, Joachim is another member of a traditional military family; similarly to Saul he is prepared to serve as a reservist but he hopes to go into academics, which is unusual for his family. His family have also earned a number of athletic trophies, but he is the first to play basketball seriously! Joachim is known for his agility and his huge hands which give him excellent control over a ball.)

Power Forward: Jachin Zarethan
6,7
(Jachin comes from Harbourtown, Bara Province, and is considered physically the strongest in the team.Stubborn and dogged, he is one of the most aggressive players on the team.)

Center: Jeremiah Pashur
6,9
(A bureaucrat’s son Hillel, Lookinghaven Province, he is naturally a staunch member of the End Times Church, but his teammates don’t hold that against him. The second tallest member of the team, he is nevertheless one of the best players, considered the second in command to the team captain who is known to be his best friend in spite of their very different backgrounds. A versatile, experienced and highly athletic player, the backers of the team hope for great things from him.)

Reserves:

C: Michael Fabian
PF: Matthew Cadmon
SF: Ichabod Cargo
PG: Gad Mauss
SG: Lemuel Badarin

Kirano BC 85-70 Footballand University

MATCH REPORT Parc Leonde, 6/Aug/13, Tip 01:00

Judging the quality of a side is always difficult in a preseason tournament, especially given the usual gulf in quality of the teams involved. The main appeal of the match is seeing Kirano in an international tournament, especially against a number of other club teams. What started with a great deal of excitement became a total non-event in the second half.

The main talking point of the match was the first appearance of center Fabien Fontaine, recently signed over from Racing Club to replace the retiring Michael Canestro. Although his minutes were limited due to a minor calf strain, the quality he showed in those minutes was clear to see.

The first quarter was dominated by Machado and Albini, as they put on a masterclass of passing and shooting to help Kirano to a 21-13 lead at the break. David da Souza, the new backup center signed from International's youth academy, looked lost in the first quarter and seemed to be unable to keep up with the breaks, which hurt the team by giving up easy offensive rebounds.

The second quarter was much the same, and Fontaine really showed his quality here by grabbing a half-dozen rebounds in five minutes on the floor. Keith Browne played some hard minutes in the second quarter, showing that he is recovering from his knee surgery nicely. With Browne's return, it helps take some of the pressure off of Alan Lister and his oft-injured foot.

The second half was more of the same, with Ingle clearing the bench in the fourth quarter. It gave us our first look at Axel Bruyneel, the young power forward who graduated from the youth academy earlier. And he repaid that education in full, scoring ten points in the fourth quarter and looking dangerous on both sides of the floor. If Ingle can bring him into the rotation more as the preseason goes on, he could be a legitimate threat to start for Kirano, which could be the spark they need for a championship season.

It was a successful run out for the team, although I'm not putting too much stock into the result. Beating a university team is one thing, but playing against a real club team will be the test for Ingle and co later on. It's a start, though.

Our Fans: Pretty good voice from the ultras. About 600 made the trip over to watch it, and they kept it up for the entire match. It would be nice if they got rid of that annoying "Rise up if you love the Royals!" song, though.

Their Fans: Quiet throughout, but that's more likely due to the neutrals showing up for the tournament.

THE FINEBERG TIMES
Sports Report

PARC LEONDE, Sangti— The Fineberg University Griffon’s began their qualification for Matchday 1 on a high note, with Jeremiah Pashur scoring 10 points in helping New Edom . defeat Manitoba All-Stars 95-78

Zarethan added five rebounds, two assists and a steal in his best performance of the game. Haws then re-entered with 2:41 left in the third quarter, and never left the floor, playing the game's final 12:41, during which time he scored six of his 10 points.

Mordecai Tanon’s points came on a fast-break dunk on which he was fouled; in spite of this he managed a free throw and a slam dunk later in the game. According to Dr. Adiel, the team’s coach, “We managed to get the initiative in the third quarter and didn’t lose it. I hope we can maintain that energy.” It seems that thus far the high standards of teamwork, focusing on low dribbling and passing has paid off.

"What do you mean?"
"They had their second game in the Trofeo de Paz."
"Already their second one? I totally missed out on the first game, damnit."

“The game. I thought you wanted to see the game?”
“Yes... But these are just... Numbers.”
“They tell us everything you need to know. See, Werfel is on a really high level in this tournament, and Friis got a good second game as well. While Lars Davidsen... I’m afraid he’ll be out instead of Laurson next game.”
“...”
“I like how Friggers is doing, by the way, don’t you?”
“You’re a nut. I’m going to see if someone recorded the game.”
“But I haven’t told you about Iversens epic distance throwing!”
“Bye-ye, idiot.”
“And it shows exactly how Rasch is fighting his way in the team. Mr Second voice? Mr Second voice?”

This may or may not be a satire upon the statsmindedness of American sportsfans.

THE FINEBERG TIMES
Sports Report

PARC LEONDE, Sangti— The Fineberg University Griffon’s continued to move forward on Day 2 at the Trofeo de Paz in a tough fight against the BK Kamzik Poprad. Star center Jeremiah Pashur hit the court hard intercepting a pass, but Michael Fabian was ready to take up the slack.
Strong support from forward Jachin Zarethan, guards Saul Ramah and Mordecai Tanon enabled them to rally from a 10 point deficit for an 87-84 victory that has pushed them forward into the next round.

“I’m very proud of the boys; it’s hard to lose Jeremiah halfway through the game but this is why we train the way we do—no one is indispensable, everyone is valuable.” Coach Dr. Daniel Adiel said proudly.

Forward Joachim Merari scored 20 points and Jachin Zarethan 11 points and 7 rebounds. “I sprained my left pinky finger,” said Merari with a grimace that was quickly followed by a cheerful grin, displaying a hand on ice. “The last half I really couldn’t dribble with my left, the ball was going around like crazy.” Joachim Merari said he was fully game for the next round and is looking forward to it.

And so, good hunting, the Griffons! Great things are expected of you!

A Bit Late RP

Postby Super-Llamaland » Wed Aug 07, 2013 7:23 pm

Group C
Taijan B NT 91–93 Llamaland Nationals
Alexander Moisiu University 81–82 Callumackbar NT

AROUND THE LEAGUE (If somebody in the match RP's I'll update this)
Callumackbar NT sank Alexander Moisiu late 82-81 on a last second shot.
THE GAME:
Taijan B NT 23 44 76 91
Llamaland 17 45 69 93

The game was back-and-forth as Taijan lead after the first and third quarters while the Nationals lead after the second and final quarters.

STARS OF THE GAME
Taijan
PG Wesley van der Berg: 13 Pts (3-5 3PT), 6 Ast, 2 Blk
F Zhi Matsuoka: 18 Pts (7-15 FG), 8 Rbd, 4 Ast
C Alvar King: 11 Pts (5-7 FG), 14 Rbd, 3 Blk
Nationals
G Salvador Perez: 25 Pts (9-16 FG), 8 Ast
F Kristen Camayen: 12 Fourth-Quarter Points, 21 Pts Overall
C Lewis Coran-Gello: Held King to 1 point in fourth quarter after Jordan fouled out

FIRST QUARTER
The game started out badly. Wesley van der Berg sank a three, and then, two minutes later, drained another one. Zhi Matsuoka scored six in the first six. Alvar King destroyed our Rick Jordan in the paint for three offensive boards. We were down, 21-8. But a 9-2 run spearheaded by Salvador Perez's ten first-quarter points got us back into it.
SECOND QUARTER
Niko Montoya's willowy frame and non-physical game lead him to being abused by Wesley van der Berg, who scored twelve in the first quarter. So, the coach slotted physical guards Salvador Perez and Lars Hudson in. When Hudson didn't work, he put in Jay Russell, a noted stopper. That worked. Van der Berg went just 0-for-5 in the quarter, Perez scored eight and Russell five. Kristen Camayen, however mustered just one point in his first Trofeo match.
THIRD QUARTER
Taijan's Daniel Yeoh scored eight of the team's first thirteen points in a 13-1 run. Yeoh was then subbed out, but Taijan maintained a seven point lead. Camayen scored eight points on eight shots, and Zhi Matsuoka scored ten.
FOURTH QUARTER
It began badly. The Nationals were down, with five minutes left, 87-80. Then Camayen drained a three (and one!) 87-84. 87-86: Montoya puts in a layup. Taijan timeout. Matsuoka scores four in a row. 91-86. Michael Morris subbed in on a Zhi Matsuoka free throw. Reynolds out, Alex Herar in. Then: Alex Herar dishes it to Morris for a three. Then: Reynolds blocks and passes to Kristen Camayen for a jumper.

Tie game. 28.3 to go. 91-91.

THEIR MOVE: Bring in Keith Baum for Alvar King.
OUR MOVE: Shift in Rick Reynolds at the five and play smallball.
THEIR POSSESSION: Wesley van der Meer finds Liam Dickinson in the corner, but the three rattles in and out. Fifteen to go.
OUR POSSESSION: Rick Reynolds drives in, throws up a layup, and...blocked by Baum. Eight to go.
THEIR POSSESSION: Matsuoka whistled up for travelling. Five to go.
OUR POSSESSION: Camayen catches the pass, dribbles in, 1.7 to go, shoots it...in. 93-91. Game over. Buzzer sounds. Crowd goes wild.

MVP: Camayen. Need we say more?

Group status: CLINCHED! Callumackbar and Taijan will duke it out for the chance to advance.

Hero of the Day: Lewis Coran-Gello. We're giving a 42-year-old forty eight minutes per game the rest of the tournament.

FIRST QUARTER: Very ho hum. Besides one of our two centers getting injured. Rick Jordan took a tumble fighting for a rebound and is out at least six games. That's the rest of the tournament. Sad times. Lewis Coran-Gello was expected to play forty three minutes in a possible clinching game. The guy's forty two. And creaky.

SECOND QUARTER: Surprise! Coran-Gello pulls down six rebounds and drops ten on the unsuspecting opposition. Salvador and Kristen have monster seconds. Thirty-four points.

THIRD QUARTER: Coran-Gello still playing. eight points, three rebounds, three blocks. Poor David Campbell.

FOURTH QUARTER: Niko Montoya alert! The guard scored the least points in his pro career. Including scrimmages. He had three last night. Today...he takes an "oh-fer-five" and three turnovers. Two starters out: Niko Montoya could be released.

To replace Jordan, the Nationals are interested in a various amount of players. Who knows? They better think of a decision, because Coran-Gello won't be going nineteen and ten on other teams forever.
