Season 16 overview - Rugby Union

Almost anything that happened this season was dwarfed by the Greenblues taking the RUWC trophy home. Vulpecula won the title, having both the superior offense (497 PF versus Aquila's 386!) and the superior defense (327 PA, while Aquila allowed just 313). Aquila's PD is +73... Vulpecula's is +170! Does that mean that these two dominated this season?

No. Simply no. Corona Borealis, one of the two Corona teams (that always looked to be stuck to the bottom four places) took second place, with Monoceros qualifying for Seasogs for the first time in a while too. Lyra takes fourth place and gets a chance to defend another good Seasogs season. But back to Vulpecula, who finished the season with 22-0-14. That gets them 66 points, only 5 more than Corona Borealis. Moreover, the runners-up have a negative PD at -3. Aquila, that other 'dominating' team, finishes fifth and does not even play Seasogs next cycle.

Lyra finished fourth, which probably does not please their fans. The club has been seen as the flagship for the Ko-orenite league for a while, especially since they appeared twice in a Seasogs final in recent years, and so far remain the only Ko-orenite team to win the thing. Now that is almost five seasons ago, and despite the second place in last season, their fans probably want more. On the other hand, there is Vulpecula, with another title in the bag, who will probably want to rival Lyra. So far, they have lost a final, they still need to win one.

And why wouldn't they? Ko-orenite rugby could be the best of the world right now, so if there is any time we could profit from this, it's this season. The 15 main players that represented our nation in the RUWC have been welcomed back as heroes, and they immediately went back to their teams to lead them to a few extra points in the final weeks (with the RUWC happening 6 match days before the end of the Ko-orenite league). Vulpecula's strong forwards (Santos, Pereira, Magalhães) all played for the national team after being on fire for the entire tournament. Aquila was represented by a few defenders, even though they returned from the championship exhausted and that was probably the reason for them missing a Seasogs spot. Corona Borealis had two players on the team (Spijker and Fletcher), and Lyra had another group of 5 players on the team, both on offense and defense. The remaining teams in the league were responsible for the other 5 players: Monoceros (2), Phoenix, Cassiopeia, Andromeda (1 each). Cygnus and Corona Australis had no players on the national team, and they finished 9th and 10th in the league.

As for the Seasogs: Lyra is ranked second of all club teams, and Cassiopeia is sixth. They miss out on the competition this season. Vulpecula and Aquila are also ranked quite high, and one of these also has to do without the international competition this season. That means that out of our top four teams (on paper), two missed out on qualifying altogether - and with a league of just 10 teams, having four of them in the top 30 of the world is something. And that also means that the other six teams are capable.

Season 6 overview - Rugby League

Sadly, this sport had somewhat less attention this season. Its season finished somewhere halfway during the Union season (so that they do not interfere with each other's tv ratings), but they did not have a World Cup winning team backing them. Anax took the championship and is joined by Sympetrum in the IRLCC. The season was pretty decent as far as the IRLCC goes, though: Epiprocta and Sympetrum survived the group stage, though both were knocked out in the Quarterfinals. Only Sympetrum gets another chance, Epiprocta finished third in the league. Not that Anax is completely new to the IRLCC, though. On the other hand, Sympetrum might want to go back to season 3 and 4 as far as the IRLCC goes: reaching the finals twice. Winning one of them, too. They have been overtaken by Zj Lucky 13s in terms of reaching the finals: three times for them, twice for 'us'. On the other hand, the Zj Lucky 13s have never won the cup.

There was some movement among the other seven teams as well: especially Tonbo has profiled itself as being among the four best teams. Odonata and Anisoptera can go two ways, judging from this season: either they might join the brawl for the second IRLCC spot (there was no stopping Anax this season, at least), or they could fall back down to Libellula and Trithemis levels. Or even to Orthetrum, who ended up with half the amount of points of Anax. And then there is poor Aeshna, with 19 points and only six wins at the end of the season. With a sport this young, we might not be able to tell a whole lot about the quality of the teams though: Aeshna came in sixth last season, while Anisoptera was dead last. Tonbo was eighth (though they performed better in previous seasons, so they might actually be a steady top-5 team from now on). Sympetrum finished fifth though, which was the reason they didn't qualify for the IRLCC in the first place, and that blocked their possibility of reaching the finals three consecutive times. But at least they are back now.

The Licentian Channel is once again alive with the sound of rugby. Let’s take a look at the winners and losers for this season, starting with the fourth edition of the Lockwood Cup, where the mainlanders of Apox are still looking for their first victory.

Unlike the draw last time out between Islanders and JK Memorial Squad, Colesham City Blues, much like the first Lockwood Cup, dominated Dwile Jerseys, despite the latter winning the title last season. It seems that the Apoxians just can’t win the Cup.

Dwile Jerseys, despite pre-season disappointment in the Lockwood Cup, have brought home their second Super Sixteen title in two years, with an eight point gap between them and the team that defeated them pre-season, Colesham. Northern Urbanista recovered from last year’s disappointment to finish third, while Montfort Lions will be heading to the Seasogs for the first time in the club’s history. As one top of the table rivalry gets going, another one loses its shine; Islanders dropped to 8th this season, and won’t be headed to the Seasogs, while JK Memorial Squad finished 9th, leaving them to a similar fate. Down at the foot of the table, The Vikings performed like a recently promoted team, and went straight back down, while the newly-elected Redwood Club, from the Isles, pushed Farnworth Rugby down, despite Farnworth having two Apoxian clubs below them who weren’t relegated. Unfortunately for them, it’s the worst Licentian and worst Apoxian teams who will drop out of the league each season.

Obviously seeking revenge after an extra time defeat in the quarter finals of the last IRLCC at the hands of the Panoli Gamblers, Sympetrum again show their credentials in international rugby league by not only equaling the Zj Lucky 13s record of three final appearances, but more importantly, becoming the first team to win the cup twice and in the process dispatching last year's winners unceremoniously in the quarter-finals. The Panoli Gamblers are looking to be a future force in the tournament however, having made the knockouts in the last three cups.

The Warriors took their fifth title in nine seasons, and punched their tickets to the IRLCC once again. The Rovers will also return to international play, finishing in the top two for the first time since their title winning season five seasons ago. Johnho still remains a factor in the title race, but once again have failed to get past third place for the third straight season. At the bottom, the Tigers of Tim City are really hoping that those talks of a second division turn out to be true, as a quick trip down and then back up could help out a lot.

A few notes on procedure:
There were a couple of dodgy entries this cycle. Without going into too much detail, 56 teams were submitted from fourteen leagues (eleven of which had previously submitted results), tournament organisers settled for the following solution to the scheduling issues.

Of the teams who won league that had previously submitted teams, the top eight got a bye straight to the group stage. The rest of the teams were sorted by league and randomly paired up to a team from a different league in order to play a single qualifying match. The winners progressed to the group stages.

For the Group Stage, teams were seeded by rank, and then randomly drawn, with no two teams from the same league permitted in the same group.

The draw for the Round of Sixteen is drawn randomly so every runner-up played away to a group winner, with no two teams from the same league permitted to play each other. Remaining rounds were drawn randomly.

Well, that was exciting, eh? Dwile Jerseys successfully navigate a three-peat, holding off JK Memorial Squad in the closest Super Sixteen in recent years, edging them out on points difference. Four point behind, come the Licentian teams, Colesham City Blues playing well, with Montfort Lions again surprising everyone. Islanders and Mandon Faithful round out those teams in the Seasogs positions. Down the other end, after years of just surviving, it is Southern Urbanista who fall down this season, newly promoted Zealots of the North staying up by less than one win. Garton Bay will be disappointed, and perhaps a touch angry to go down, despite finishing above two Apoxian clubs who aren't relegated, and despite gaining 17 more points than second bottom Zealots of the North.

And so The Vikings return to the Super Sixteen at the first time of asking, with Dwile Rugby keeping them close at hand due to bonus points. It does appear that the league has split somewhat, with the top 4 all fighting for promotion, whilst the bottom 4 were all fighting against relegation. In the end it is Oldem Academicals who make the drop to Apox Rugby League 2, winning a measly 3 games all season, with a horrendous points difference - their slump in recent years has been quite remarkable to watch. Replacing them next season will be Cawln Rovers, the winners of Apox Rugby League 2.
