Some OOC Information:

8 groups of 5 teams, single round robin, winners of each group advance to quaterfinals. Once in quarterfinals and in playoffs, a hard bracket is used, similar to the RL NCAA basketball tournament. There will be a third place game for the losers of the semifinals.

IC Information:

Background

Maklohi Vai has been present on the NationStates Sports scene for nearly a year and has participated, or is set to participate, in upwards of 50 events to date. This includes World Cups 62 through 65, along with BoF 49 and CoH 54-57. Most importantly for you, however, is its experience in the Friendly Cup. Maklohi Vai participated in Friendly Cups 4-8, making the quarterfinals in the first two, winning it all in number 6, quarterfinals in 7, and back to a win in FC 8. Maklohi Vai has a strong sports tradition within the country, making it the first choice for entertainment for many families and individuals. Hosting a tournament of the size of the Friendly Cup will put the country into a frenzy, making sure that all the necessary preparations are in place before our guests arrive. Infrastructure is not an issue, as our main industry is tourism; the fans of participating nations would by no means strain this infrastructure. In addition, Maklohi Vai has a convenient highway system that serves all of the stadiums and airports that would be used. Civil rights and freedoms are extremely high, so expect a pleasant time, free of crime, when you visit. Vaians are also known for their friendliness, especially towards a fellow football fan. There will be plenty of people to help you if you should get lost or confused.

The Levivanaia national team arrived! They participated in friendly cup 7 and did not do well. This year they were focused. They had booked there stay in one of the nicest hotels: Ritz Glitz. The pressure was on Rookie Goalie Michael Lazenbey to preform. He was Levivania's top prospect. He played outstanding in the juniors, but could he deliver, or was the big leagues to big for him. After they got to the hotel Teammates Danny Muller and Bruce Walker, went to the hotel's state of the art workout gym to get in some extra work. They did a 6 mile warm up run on the indoor track, then did some sprints on the basketball court and finally went to lifting weights. Meanwhile since it was evening Michael Lazenbey and star player and captain Levi Goldman went to a local bar for a drink. Michael just turned 21 two weeks ago so he could drink and was excited. Levi Bough drinks for them and they sat down. Suddenly, some players from another rival team: Darmen who was in the cup started to harass them "Ha, we are going to beat your ass!" the biggets one said. They started calling him names. Michael got up and punched the big one in the face. All heel broke loose! Levi And Mike started throwing punches. Eventually, the bartender threatened to call the police Levi had a bloody nose and Mike had a swollen eye but Mike thought: One hell of a night!

Les Royales Roster for Friendly Cup 9, Hosted In Maklohi Vai

The Friendly Cup? I don't remember through its 8 previous editions the SFA's participation, but it does seem like an interesting idea. We don't know if this is a one-time thing, or a showing of coming events regarding the SFA's stance on non-WCC tournaments. And with the team missing out on the Cup of Harmony due to the shuffling of papers yielding a mistake somewhere in the front office, it's an opportunity to continue to play competitive matches against competitive talent, and hope to do well at the tournament. There are already many established nations at the top, like Des Monts Ila Vai Cup rival and tournament host, Maklohi Vai, who enter the tournament 2-time champions of the tournament. Oh, they're also ranked 1st in the world, and are in our group. Slembana, Luc Gaudreau's team, who created the competition, are not participating this time, and are replaced by other first timers like our neighbour, Cassadaigua. This team won't be a powerhouse, we know that. But what it can do, however, is play like a team. Girard Giroux and Alex Gannot built an amazing chemistry at the last World Cup, and they hope to continue that here. Behind them on Midfield, manager Val Grosjean's defensive focus really shows. 3 of the 4 are defensive midfields, the only offensive one being Maxime Elemanceur, of the National Team. On defense, this squad looks like it could be tough to penetrate. Savard and Girard are 2 world class players, Shane Von Axelsson looks to prove that he shouldn't have just fallen off the map after the 12th Copa Rushmori, and try to get one last shot at the World Cup team before his likely retirement at 36 years of age. He might get 2, if he stays good enough long enough. Martin Voyeur is a youth player who Grosjean hopes will benefit by his experience here, he plays for Grosjean back home, and is a real talent, good enough to be a future captain, even though that title currently belongs to Girard Giroux. In net, Bellevue and de Carte are both worthy keepers who get the nod, and both are good decisions by the boss. Bellevue is one of the top young keepers in the nation, and de Carte looks for a national team spot in the future. Pier-Luc Dion is 28, and has said he will retire at World Cup 70. That's in 10 years, which would make de Carte 33, and Bellevue 29. Bellevue has the likely upper hand due to age, and also better career numbers so far. He'll be the starter. Moving on, the groups have been drawn, and Sicoutimont are in Group 8:

Those are the other teams in the group. We've mentioned top-ranked Maklohi Vai already, but we also must deal with Lymantatia, the 24th ranked side, and 2 other unrankeds, Pikkewyn and Yugiohistan. At the World Cup level, we've only ever met Maklohi Vai, never the other 4. Here's Les Royales schedule:

An extract from The Darrenovia Times

Yesterday The National Team landed in Maklohi Vai via the Kolo Lahi International Airport which sits just 25 minutes away from the amazing stadium of The Vaian National Pitch in which the Night Wolves will play their group games for Friendly Cup 9. Players and Staff were looking tired as they boarded the coach taking them to their home base for the tournament, a 5 star hotel just 10 minutes away from the stadium which will be the Night Wolves battleground for the oncoming week and a half. This morning players were up at 6, following the guidelines of their strict diet and fitness regime to get them in peak condition for the tournament. However even the most delusional fan can see that this is not going to be an easy ride for our boys. We are in a rather tricky group, 2 rated teams and 2 unrated teams, it is almost certain that the team will expect defeat from the 2 rated teams, Darmen and Max Empire. However if we gain 2 wins from the unrated teams, Beaverriver and Super-Llamaland and other results go our way then their is a possibility that our nation will see it past the group stages, yet with only 1 team going through per group it's almost a certainty that The Wolves will be coming home early.

H:''Very much so. The host Maklohi Vai for example, ranked first in the Friendly Cup, is in Pot 1, naturally. Drawing with them means it's good game right away, probably.''
L:''Also, Gaveo, ranked second, is to be feared.''
H:''Indeed. Since Pot 1 contains highly ranked veteran of the FC, we should hope to get one of the lowerly ranked ones out there, such as Paradystopia or Max Empire.''

Maxopolis Times: Team Prepares for Friendly Cup 9

Today our loved National Soccer Team has left our proud Empire and have begun their trip to the nation of Maklohi Vai, this years host for the eight friendly cup. Our team took home the second place prize last year scoring behind Maklohi Vai itself last year. This has raised our nation from the rank of 25th to the rank of 9. The nation is expecting great results from our team, specially after last years great results. Coach Opoloxonite, who is has coached our team for four Friendly Cups, including this one, assures the nation that the team will do good. "We are still practicing with the great Bombball the people of Swyftlandre created. This forces the team to do their best at practice, or ummmm..... it gets unpleasent. This is perfect preperation for the games. This year we will not fail. Last year we got 1-1 with Maklohi Vai at the finals, but we lost because of the later goals." The nation is seeing a record amount of people preparing for this massive event as parades and food stands cover our cities. We wish the team good luck and hope they enjoy themselves.

The Faikliren soccer league has left for Maklohi Vai, a country that most people only know on the map. It is new for the government to participate in international sports events which leaves us wondering, is this the new era of sports in Faikliren? We spoke to the team manager Hanshire Kitoski-Aikedco, who explained the importance of out country participating with other nations in such events. Chiata Times

Well here we are again. Onto another cup. This time not a World Cup event but the Friendly Cup 9. Chiata will be putting in their secondary team, the Chiata Pumas. This is almost like tryouts to see who can get onto the Chiata Suns. The Pumas are not completly unixperenced however. They have played in the Soviet Bloc League for one seasom. That season, however, was a total failer. The Pumas finished 0-0-5 and at the bottom of the league of only 10 countries. Only one score was made by the Pumas. It only hapened when the other team pulled their goal keeper out so that the Pumas could have atleast one score in the season. This cup, the Chiata Pumas are trying to start new. They are going for a balenced 3-4-3. Their play style, ranked from -5 to 5, is an even 0. The Pumas also got new jerseys from the Adler Sports Company.
The Chiata Suns show some interest in this cup. They want to see how the even play style works out. In the World Cup 65, the Suns where heavly favoring defence. As a result, the alowed few goals but also wern't able to score very well. The Suns want to see if the other style works better.
The Chiata Pumas were drawn into group 5.

IT STARTS
Alitaba arrives in Tamolaki for Friendly Cup 9

The initial tournament of the Manggugubat or the Alitaba Football Team will be the Friendly Cup 9. The team have already arrived at Tamolaki in Maklohi Vai. The people there were friendly and they have shown the team the way to the places where the team can stay. After studying their opponents and the stadium itself, the coach let the team know his thoughts in the tournament.

"We are in the worst position possible. First, we wont be playing on the final matchday. That is crucial. because only the winning team in the group will qualify, and others will go home crying. The stadium will also be a distraction. I expect many people from other nations, particularly Filopines and Soviet Canuckistan whose fans may be very noisy, and the stadium design only amplifies it, causing distractions to us. So here is what we will do: we will undergo training under the noise of the music of Dyastin Biber. You do not want to hear his music right? That's like the jeers that you will hear during our matches. Hopefully no one will object to my suggestion."

The next day, Biber songs were played in the training ground while conducting passing trainings. At first, the players were miscommunicating a lot--at the point that a fight almost broke out between Apolinario and Serafino. The team did this the whole day. They know that if they complete this training, they will be resistant of any fan jeering during the match and they can completely focus on their game.

The Manggugubat schedule will start with a match against the Pumas of Chiata, then will play against Filopines and then against Levivana 2 and they will close their schedule against Soviet Canuckistan. Not an ideal way of ending your usual schedule. Meanwhile, the Football Association of Alitaba will enter a squad for the Market Cup. If the team is eliminated early, then they will participate in the Market Cup as well.
