A Brief Guide to Sports RPing


1.The Basics

Sports roleplaying, or RPing, is conducted through a mix of computer generated scores and player created narrative. The hosts of a tournament, that would be myself use a program known as a 'scorinator', which generates a random score for each team, weighted by several factors, and posts these scores in this thread. For this tournament, we are using a scorinator called xkoranate.The teams that advance through each round, and ultimately win the tournament, are based off of these results. Every day, participants have the opportunity to post a roleplay, which can be connected or completely separate from the match itself.


2.So if its all a random number generator, why do I need to RP?

Because it is more than just randomness! In World Cup Committee tournaments (that would be the Baptism of Fire, the World Cup, and the Cup of Harmony), there are three R's that affect your result: Rank, Randomness, and RPing. Because every participant in the QUWC begins with no rank, it is not a factor. That means that how you do in the tournament is influenced by both your RPs and the random luck of the draw.


3.How exactly do my RPs impact my score?

Each day, the hosts will read through all of your RPs, and grade them based on factors like quality and originality. The score is added into the scorinator every day before results are generated, and they add up throughout the tournament. If you RP consistently, you are much more likely to win than an opponent who hasn't, though it is never guaranteed.


4.Can I get some tips for RPing?

Absolutely! The first, most basic thing would be to make sure it reads well. Proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar will get you a long way, though if you are not a native english speaker, don't worry about it and just do your best. Once you have the mechanics down, you're left with what exactly to write. This is where the real creative side of NS Sports comes into play. The most common type of roleplay is a match report; a newspaper article, broadcast transcript, or third-person view of the match. While these roleplays are totally fine, and can often be very entertaining, you don't have to limit yourself to them! Players often use things like poems, back stories of their players, or a scene in the locker room before a match to bring an engaging, interesting, or humorous narrative into their RPing. In the last World Cup cycle, I based all of my World Cup Qualification RPs off of the development, release, and promotion of a World Cup video game, and made it as one of 32 nations to the World Cup Proper! If you find yourself totally stuck, the hosts will be posting a theme or phrase of the day to help your creative juices flow. Watch for them in the cutoffs of the previous matchday.

Finally, keep in mind that the most important thing is to have fun! Because this is NationStates, we don't have millions of dollars riding on the results of a football tournament; all of it is for your pleasure. Enjoy what you write, and make sure that what you write doesn't ruin the fun of someone else.


5.What's up with rosters?

Rosters are an essential part of making the tournament run! It really helps other players with their roleplays if they know who your players are, and it can help you as well not to have to make up names every time. Because they are so important, every team posting a roster will receive an RP bonus. For some examples of roster, see here or here.

There are two things you should include with your roster in addition to player names. The first is a 'style modifier', which is an integer between -5 and 5. This is another small variable for the scorinator that lets it determine if you are a more defensive or more offensive team. -5 represents a very defensive team, while 5 represents a very offensive one, with 0 being neutral. Don't worry, your style modifier will not affect which player wins.

You should also include a set of RP permissions, usually like this:

This lets players know what they can and cannot do when RPing against your team. Godmodding is basically something totally crazy that you would not expect to happen in a game. Maybe a bird flies down into the stadium and carries the Quaffle or something into the goal, or a player is taken down by a crazy fan who threw a cauldron at him.
