Welcome to the season preview of the 2012-2013 season and teams for the Quebec Hockey League. The league uses the Prenneau Cup as the trophy of the last 85 years of the Quebecois Hockey Championships. There will likely be a lot of roster changes to the teams between the Entry Draft and the Import Player Assignment, so the season preview will pertain mostly to team histories and its past results.

Western Conference

Prince Alexandre Division

Attawapiskat Avalanche

Image

Senators have been on the rebuilding mode for last several seasons, gradually improving along the way. This season is particularly important for 'Les 2e Sens', in order to figure out whether they're good enough to finally make some progress and enter the playoffs. Their stars are Igor Kulikov and Han Soo Kim, the puck-scoring dynamic duo, and Stranislav Markov, the league's greatest pest defenceman.

Attawapiskat is a small city with dominant First Nations influence. Being one of the coldest cities with diamond mines and QFB Attawpiskat(the largest base in the nation), the team seemed to reflect on this with their gritty, dangerous playing styles.
It's also known as the most isolated city nation, depriving them of any significant rivalries. However in recent years, the competition with Ottawa Senators has brought some tension on the ice.

Rouyn-Noranda Huskies

Image

Rouyn-Noranda Huskies were largely unlucky last season, as the injuries to the key players immediately placed them out of playoff race and gave them the 4th Overall pick. With an injection of good defensive talent, it is very likely that they will make into playoffs this season. For players, there are

Rouyn-Noranda is a gold-mining, mid-sized city that is well renowned for producing many notable cultural figures. People there are typically known as rough and rowdy, but nevertheless loyal and hearty when it comes to cheering for their beloved team. The Arena Minecorps is old, rundown arena located in economically depressed Rouyn part of the city.
It's by far the smallest arena in Western Conference, seating about 13,560 in a spacious space, with concourse containing photographs and many relics from the city's hockey heritage. This, in addition to High-energy crowd, and run-down charm, lends a very cool old-school atmosphere to both home and visiting crowd.

Val d'Or Foreurs

Image

Foreurs did so-so last season, making into the playoffs last year in an eighth seed and got swept away by Quebec Nordiques in 4 games. Emphasised by workhorse star(and captain of the team) Anthony Mantha, they are currently the Western Conference's most glitzless team. It is the team with an anti-celebrity mentality that preaches hard work, teamwork and humility above flair, individualism and glamour. While they lack much starpower, they still produce a great, young squad consisting of local kids and their future is quite bright.

Val d'Or is an administrative and educational centre of the province of Abitibi-Temiscamingue that is known for its vast parks, cycle tracks, and forests that surround the Lac-Temiscamingue, which makes it a gateway to campers and natives. The city has a particularly large native population. Some other attractions include the City of Gold and the mining village of Bourlamaque, both national heritage sites. The Foreurs play in 20,560-seated Lankabank Centre. It was built just several weeks ago and will open with the starting of new season. It is well-combined with the native culture evident in Val d'Or and all the amenities+technology needed for QHL arenas that are built now. The fans there are native-dominated and somewhat more educated/rich than its neighbours in Rouyn-Noranda.
The rivalry against its Abitibi neighbour Rouyn-Noranda is huge.

Ottawa Senators

Image

The Ottawa Senators have performed very well and consistently during last 10 seasons, making playoffs in 8 of them. While they were blocked from winning the Prenneau Cup(mostly thanks to Quebec Nordiques'), they nevertheless were strong, with 4 appearances on conference finals. The team features Jordan Leclair, one of league's top scoring centre and Michel Hyka Trophy(as Rookie of the Year) for 2003-2004 Season, as well as Jordan Karlsson, who just won the Edwin Rowatt Trophy for best defenseman of previous season. Other than that, the squad is mostly consisted of young, inexperienced prospects. In addition, Bernie Langevins, an UFA purchase from Sherbrooke Phoenix, will provide much improved front on goaltending.

Ottawa Senators, a historical organisation playing its 86th season, plays at the Carleton Palladium, a large, 19500-seated arena. Most of the games were usually sold out. Ottawa is a medium-sized city of 1.85 million based on high-tech instustries and transportation, the latter due to it being the junction of 5 highways, 3 railway lines and 2 rivers. Ottawa fans are usually known as highly educated and civilised, but that tends to change when traditional rivals of Montreal Canadiens and Kingston Knights come and visit this "Silicon Valley of Quebec".

Kingston Knights

Image

Along with the Montreal Canadiens, they're most successful team in the Quebec Hockey League's history. However, they have been through the league's worst slump, which brought them with stockpile of talented prospects. After barely missing out of playoffs on the very last match, Kingston is expected to perform better and make playoffs- with some consistency expected of them to break through the tough Western Conference. The team's stars are Alexandre Rioux, a talented shooter with marvelous accuracy, and Irwin Harper, who managed to revive his career after a career-threatening back surgery 2 seasons before. With many talented prospects coming into the team this season, they are expected to break their 8-seasons of playoff drought.

Kingston is a city located in border against Canada(OOC: This applies on my multiverse). It is traditionally a centre of business and trade, but is seeing the rising importance of public sector institutions and establishments. Kingston enjoys typical rivalries against Ottawa and Montreal, with the latter in particular. The fans are infamous for their universal loyalty and arrogance, eats up the hockey toujours. The Maple Leaf Gardens is always sold out, with the league's most expensive tickets(at the range of $150-$500). By far, it is leading in QHL for bring in the most revenue in merchandises, box office and television.

Sherbrooke Phoenix

Image

Sherbrooke Phoenix have been a consistent performer for a while, with well-formed core of great players in all aspect. To simplify, they are an all-around team, who were traditionally blanked on the playoff stage by the Nordiques. Now that the Nordiques are on another rebuilding mode, Phoenix are most likely to step up and try to win the coveted cup. The stars in this team are Francois Decarie, a genius playmaker, and Gilles Clark, a veteran scorer-turned-shutdown forward. However, the gaps left by departure of Bernie Langevins in the goaltending are worrying and could serve as red light in their journey to the Prenneau Cup.

Sherbrooke is the capital of the province of Estrie. Primarily being a college town and all-year tourism desination, the fans tends to be younger than those of other cities and more rabid. The city is divided into 2, with the western part of city being primarily Francophone, and the East, Anglophone. The Phoenix plays in a modest Sherbrooke Gardens(seated 17,650), very old coliseum in the downtown. While it's very old, the owners refuse to build a new arena, instead regularly renovating the venue.

OOC: As many have already figured out early, large number of my teams are based on actual QMJHL and NHL teams. I have decided to use them because my nation is largely based on RL Quebec and Maritime Canada, as well as Eastern Ontario(+Ottawa). However, the cities and franchises here are also different slightly from the RL franchises to many extents for IC purposes and how I RP these cities in NS. Just take note of that.

QHL Season Preview: Western Conference-Central Division

Montréal Canadiens

Image

Montreal Canadiens are the oldest and most successful in the QHL, having won 24 Prenneau Cups. However, they suffered a 2 decades-long cup drought. Les Habs currently has the cavalcade of very good role players in D and between pipes, but their offense, for last several season was a joke. They placed 5th in Western Conference and got humiliated in the 1have to find some good O or else their futility won't change. Their key players are elite defenseman Phillip Charbonneau and goaltender Martin Caprice.

Canadiens play at the 17,450-seated Montréal Forum, where it played since 1928. Its old charms and history are prevalent all over the arena, well complementing the modern features that it received from regular renovations. Thus, it provides an unique experience for visiting fans. Montréal is the largest city(as well as an economical centre) in the nation and a hockey-mad one indeed. Its fanbase is huge, demanding and often hot-tempered, which makes it a huge pressure cooker for players. Its traditional rivals are Ottawa Senators, Québec Nordiques and Kingston Knights. There is also a moderately large and strong rivalry between Les Canadiens and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.

Québec Nordiques

Image

Last preseason, the Nordiques experienced huge losses in retirement of Hindmarsh Yoon, undoubtedly the greatest QHL hockey player ever and captain of the franchise, and Pierre Lacroix, talented sniper. United with largely young and new core however,Les Nords placed once again in top of the Western Conference and easily cruised to the Prenneau Cup Final, where they were defeated in the 3rd Overtime of Game 7 by St.John's Celtics. With their decade-long dynasty coming to an end, the Nordiques are currently restructuring their team, with the young guns replacing retired legends from the dynasty years. So, It is most likely that they will make into playoffs again, but won't be a contender for the coveted cup.

Quebec City is the second largest and the capital city of the nation. Compared to other cities, it is particularly a Franco-Korean(with latter more dominant) city, which makes playing in/visiting the city quite unique. Nordiques play in the rebuilt Colisee QBC, which is also the home of Royal Kingdom of Quebec Ice Knights. It is a great place to watch QHL games: The atmosphere is incredible(very intimate, the views terrific from any seat in the house and elaborate displays using posters, boards and anything else.
Nordiques have huge rivalries against Montreal and Chicoutimi, and it was shown several times in past with fun full brawls and home fans storming the opponents' buses.

Victoriaville Tigres

Image

Victoriaville Tigres had a good season, placing 6th in the tough Western Conference. However, their quick end to playoffs with first-round sweep from Sherbrooke Phoenix resulted in the change to the coaching staff. It is highly uncertain what will happen to them this season, which all depends on how Eg Lamont, the new head coach, can utilise his players. There are no specific, standout players from this franchise, who produced no Ice Knight for about 20 years.

Victoriaville is a small, agricultural city located in the Bois-Franc region. Tigres play in 30 year old,16,590-seated Colisée Lankabank. It is a small, boistrous arena with much amenities from a modern arena. The fans are welcoming and friendly, making a great place for families and friends to visit. Compared to other cities, there are clearly more teenagers and families on the coliseum. There are no special rivalries against any other teams, though things can get heated up when the Nordiques visit this quiet city.

Shawinigan Cataractes

Image

Shawinigan Cataractes were off to another miserable season, placing last for the second time in 3 years. They showed problems on almost every part, as they won only 7 games out of 66. However, this allowed them to gather some high-quality prospects, who can provide some team hope in future years.

The Cats play at 16,250-seated Serge Laplante Memorial Coliseum, which is basically a derelict, ancient barn with much history. It is the only one in QHL with no luxury boxes and hosts very few of modern amenities. The atmosphere is very intimate and old-styled, which makes many as if one's time traveling. The only bummer is that since it's in a small market of only 150,000, it constantly suffers in lack of revenue other than ticket sales. The only rival to Cats is Victoriaville Tigres, a fellow small-market team.

Chicoutimi Saguenéens

Image

There is no team that is harder to rebuild than Chicoutimi Sagueneeans. Constant mismanagment from the owners and bad draft picks have depleted their farm system, as almost all of good talents and draft picks are traded to play well in regular season. With this cycle for almost 10 years, the team is in shambles. No surprising that they placed in 12th place out of 13 teams in the West. With Zachary Tasgouche as new GM, they are expected to face extreme changes to both players and staff. It won't be easy and quick, however, to save this franchise.

Chicoutimi is the economical centre and provincial capital of Saguenay, with about a medium-sized population of 650,000. It is with a decent hockey culture and the province is well known for producing large number of hockey players. The Sags play in the 17,600-seated Centre Serge Laplante.

Blainville-Boisbriand Armada

Image

They were on the top of the Western Conference for a while now, but denied the coveted cup since 2002 thanks to the Nordiques' 15-years of 2 dynasties. Last season, they once again placed second and lost to Rimouski in what was a tough 6 game series. Now that Nords are out of the throne, maybe they can lift the Prenneau Cup once again....and very soon. They should be dominating the league this season, as most of its bulletproof defense and large number of forwards return to another action. Especially with the All-star defensemen Lucien Ryu and Dominique Abenaki, as well as a great scorer in Zigores Novak and Goaltender Etienne Park.

Blainville-Boisbriand is the medium-sized city(and suburb of Montreal) that is the gateway to the Laurentians, Quebecois mecca of winter sports of all kinds. It plays in large, 21,500-seated Capp Electronics Centre, which carries all the modern amenities that a modern hockey arena has nowadays. It regularly records sellouts. The fans there are suburban and family-based. They only have one serious rivalry and that is against Montreal. Montreal and B-B's owners are each from enemy families and their hatred and competition in business seemed to transfer into ice and atmosphere. Don't go there if you're Habs fan. Otherwise, you'll be fine.

Rimouski Océanic

Image

Rimouski played well enough to place 7th in the Western Conference, where they surprisingly beat B-B Armada and played Quebec Nordiques to the Overtime of Game 7 in Conference Semifinals. They look to be a solid team next season. Fontaine, Straka, Bellard and J.L.Park form a small offensive corps. Brennan and Isaac-Louis Park looks decent between the pipes. Defense seems to be in a question mark for them, which they are trying to solve by bringing prospects down from minors.

Rimouski is a small-sized city by the St.Lawrence River that is home to some of World's most important ocean science institutes. The Oceanic play in 17,880-seated Centre ParkSang, which is about 20 years old and with reasonable amount of modern amenities and atmosphere. The crowd is much more business-like than in other small-city teams, even though the area still reeks of hockey, alive and well in all levels.

QHL Season Preview: Eastern Conference-Acadie Division

Gaspe Oilers

Image

Gaspe Oilers, after 6 seasons without playoffs, finally made it into the playoffs last season as the sixth seed. However, they quickly got eliminated by Halifax Tempest in 6 games at the first round. Their future seems positive with all the young talent they have, as they will mature through this and next season. They will still make it into playoffs but it's uncertain whether they will do well. The team is led by excellent Marc-Edouard Labadie, one of league's best scorers, and extremely-talented offensive defenseman Logan Schultz.

Gaspe is the city by the Gaspecie Peninsula that is experiencing a huge economic boom due to the tourism and oil industry. Pier 21, which seats 18,660, was built about 4 seasons ago and always sell out. The fans are moderately aggressive and mostly have problems with the Titan.

Acadie-Bathurst Titan

Image

Titan faced many crises both on and off-ice last season, but managed to stay on the playoff race until the very last day of the regular season. With the ownership issue now solved, they are looking forward to turn the page around and make some improvements with their injury-plagued squad. Like Val d'Or, they are very much focused on stocking the team with local team, for while.
With the star defensemen Alexandre Kanibaweeke and Gary Lebill and new coach Jong Man Moon, 4-time QIS Championship coach with UNB Varsity Reds, this team will be very much a wildcard team for Eastern Conference.

Bathurst is a tiny harbour town in New Brunswick's remote northeastern corner, it is located at the heart of Quebec's Triilingual Acadian Belt, which makes it a very unique, most uncomplainingly trilingual of Quebec where all three official languages are accepted as part of daily life. While the 17,660-seated Irvin D.Morsink Regional Centre lacks modern amenities, it still provides very good experience with a very homie, multilungual, small-town charm and with a fiery passion for their local team.

Moncton Blades

Image

Blades floundered early into the season and found themselves out of playoff race shortly after. They have reasonably good depth but lacks elite talent in almost all areas. Jacques Caron and Archie Kim, probably the best talent they have right now, needs to step up and lead this team or else once again, they will be out very early into the season.

Moncton is a railway town that is experiencing huge growth in economy and population due to its burgeoning informational technology and retail industries. Its 18,660 seated Moncton Coliseum is new and modern but lacks charm. Its primary rivals are pretty much all the teams in their division except Gaspe.

Prince Laurent Island Islanders

Image

Last season, PLI Islanders was sucked out of bog when their key players started to experience huge decline in production around halfway through the season. In response to this, almost all of them were traded, leaving this team with barely any grown talent and out of playoffs. They don't have much talent who's old and experienced enough to come from farm system, so barring any miracles, expect them to be on the bottom half of the Conference. No playoffs for them this season.

Prince Laurent Island is a small island off the shore of Acadie province. Its primary industries are agriculture and tourism, which allows people to live in modest, reasonable amount of income. Not to mention the Island's small population(175,000) keeps the game tickets down, so sometimes opposing teams(particularly from Moncton) outnumber home fans. They do not have any particular rivals at this moment.

Saint John Acadiens

Image

Saint John was decent last season, placing 4th in the division before bowing out to Halifax in Conference Semifinals. They features Serge Bernier, an unorthodox goaltender playing at an elite level, a varied defense corps capable of playing both ends of the ice, and a deep fleet of forwards that features a potential game-changer on each line. No surprising that they are so dominant on regular season. However, their inability to get it past to the advanced stages of playoffs seems to be their great concern and much to the grief of this traditionally successful, "Original Six" franchise.

Saint John is an industrial, blue-collar city that is home to some of Quebec's largest steelmakers and shipyards. The 19,660 seated Harbour Station is a tasteful, modern building at the bottom of a steep hill, which allows for great outside views of the place. It was sold out for quite a long time, which requires fans to sign up on waiting list to get their tickets. This is a very normal thing in QHL Original Six teams(Saint John, Chicoutimi, Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa and Kingston), so take note of that.
Its primary rivals are Moncton and the other "Original Six" Teams and things get pretty heated with the way that the Acadiens play against them.

Halifax Tempest

Image

Things went great for Halifax last season, as they placed 2nd in the Conference and managed to enjoy a long run into playoffs before bowing out to St.John's Celtics in the tightly-contested Eastern Conference finals to St.John's. They got great an unit led by silky Heon Goh and Sang Goo Lee, and sandpapery Marc Emond, as well as a powerful two-way rookie in Michael Kesler. Their defense, while not the best, is great when healthy and they boast excellent goaltender Hal Niemes of Sealtainn Eireann.

Halifax is a capital city of 475,000 located in Sealtainn Eireann that is very prosperous as probably the Quebecois Commonwealth's most prosperous port. They currently play in Halifax City Centre, which seats 19,125 and has been sold out since 2002. They are rivals with most teams in the division, though in particular Moncton.

OOC: I do not own any of the pictures.

QHL Season Preview: Eastern Conference-Acadie Division

Sept-Îles Aurora

Image

Sept-îles Aurora fell into the bottom....once again. They were the second-worst team in the conference last season, with Iqaluit Silver Wings taking the spot for worst. But at least Silver Wings and Wildcats have lots of very good players coming up the Junior and Minor ranks. Aurora doesn't even have that. With a pitiful squad consisting of nobodies and the elderly(in mid-late 40s), there's not much to expect from them.

Sept-Îles is a quiet resort community which only have lots of youth due to nearby cottages/fishing lodges or 2 universities at downtown. The Aurora were successful 2 decades ago, but since then didn't see any huge success on-ice. Nowadays, they only survive thanks to university students and old folks who come to watch their good ol' teams play in the QNR Forum, a bland 80s building.

Labrador City Freeze

Image

Labrador City Freeze were a huge surprise last season, placing 2nd in the conference. However, they soon were humiliated by Gaspé Oilers in playoffs when they bowed out after 5 miserable games. With large number of the core signed for long-term, they are expected to be contenders for years to come. Their captain Pierre Drouin is one of the best scorers in the league. However, their overreliance on him is very worrying, as he's often injured leaving a huge hole in their offense.

Labrador City is a mining city right in the heart of the Labrador Mountains. The Freeze plays in Moulson Centre at the heart of the city. The ticket prices are quite cheap, so expect lots of opponent fans to take over in some gamesgames. The fans there are mostly blue-collar and comes from all ages. They are usually hostile to opponent players, though they can get a bit rougher with divisional rivals like Iqaluit and Goose Bay.

Goose Bay Flames

Image

Goose Bay Flames, with its aging squad, were decent at regular season, placing 6th. However, they got easily eliminated by Halifax in what was possibly the last playoff series for several years. Now Flames are left with a significant question over whether they should trade for prospects and draft picks, or just find ways to bolster the squad with FA signings. In terms of players, they have Xavier Laflamme, who's one of the best power forwards in the league, and franchise goaltender Mikka Verkoff.

Goose Bay is a city right at the northern tip of the Mainland Québec. They are currently on a decade-long economical recession and due to this and its status as a lone, small city makes the Spiritair Saddledome only 89% in average attendance for a game. So, expect opponent fans to take significant portion of the seats in home games.

St.John's Celtics

Image

St.John's just won the Prenneau cup, beating Québec Nordiques in OT of Game 7 at the finals last May. With almost all players from the team staying for another season, they should be able to dominate the league with their fiery offence. The notable players in the squad right now are superstars Maxwell Belmont-Deschamps, Logan Guthrie, Kendall Torres, Vladimir Tsoi, Michel Deslauriers and Cadance Edwards-Molsson.

St. John's is the third largest city in the nation with 3.4 million people. It is a huge economical centre with lots of growth during last 10 years. The Celtics play to sold-out crowd in 22,500 Mile One Centre, probably the most modern arena available in the division. Their fans are crazy and hot-tempered, with hockey right in their blood.
They have a quite bitter rivalry with their provincial rival Gander Jets.

Gander Jets

Image

Gander barely made it into the playoffs last season, but failed to make any impacts as they were swept by the provincial rival St.John's Celtics. Overall, They have an average squad, not particularly good or bad.

Gander is a city of 750,000 that is heavily relied upon aerospace industries. Thus, the locals tends to be richer and educated than others in the northern part of the nation. The Jets play in Avro Aerodrome, a modern facility that is always filled to maximum capacity. Their only rival is St.John's Celtics.

Iqaluit Silver Wings

Image

Iqaluit is the latest Expansion team in QHL, founded about 4 years ago. As most expansion teams would, they so far have yet to experience any success and playoff stage. However, they have a very talented group of players who can turn this franchise around in 10 years. The team's key players are wingers Dannick Howe and Börjn Ayuqiltaq and goaltender Sam Erhat.

Iqaluit is the medium sized city up in the Arctics. Due to its freezing climate and almost-365/7 winter, there aren't much sports available. No surprise that Iqaluit's home to Québec's largest hockey systems in junior level. The Iqaluitlites are mostly Inuits who lived in Nunavut for long time, so it is necessary to know at least a basic vocabulary of Inuktitut. They do not have any rivalries at the moment.

Free Agents-Imports

QHL, for the first time in its history, opened its doors to foreign players. 5 players have signed to join, with another 5 to be drafted in QHL entry draft. Let's see who signed to play in Quebec!

Jon Ericson, 25

Nation of origin: Jahistic Republic of Unolia
Team signed: Saint John Acadiens
Contract Detail: 2 year, $1.2 Million($600,000/year)
Information: After finishing his college career in Unolia, he hung up his skates for 3 years and studied PhD in Political Science at Universite St.Croix when Georges Ethier, the scout of Saint John Acadiens and his trainer, recommended him to join the Acadiens' Rookie Camp. At there, the former University of the City of Unolia star managed to impress Ethier well enough that he was immediately contacted by Saint John Acadiens, who managed to bring him into the Original Six franchise. He is shown to be very good at playmaking abilities, but still raw ,in QHL standards, for goalscoring abilities. Expect him to have some troubles adjusting to the new system of grit and skill at Saint John, but still scoring around 30 points.

Derek Fuller, 24

Nation of origin: Jahistic Republic of Unolia
Team Signed: Ottawa Senators
Contract Detail: 3 year, $900,000($300,000/year)
Information: Derek Fuller, who was a stud (left) winger in Perryslane University at Unolia, was signed by Ottawa. While his offensive capabilities are high, he has some problems with his puckhandling, which is at times, far too juggling. If solved, he could well be the Senators' solution to its problems with lack of a good LW. Expect him to score, at best for now, around 20 goals and 45 points from him.

Boris Feltsov, 24
Nation of Origion: Polkopia
Team signed: Iqaluit Silver Wings
Contract Detail: Undisclosed amount, 1 Year
Information: Not much is known about the Polkopia Right Winger, who jumped right away into the QHL as soon as his college career ended. From what the scouts saw in his videos, he is another of typical one-dimensional player who can score, but can't do much otherwise. He could very much be a cancer on the locker room, something bad for this young team.

Oleg Sranshov, 22
Nation of Origin: Polkopia
Team signed: Victoriaville Tigres
Contract Detail: 3 Year, $1.95 million(650,000/year)
Information: A glitzless player with great ethics, Sranshov's expected to fit well in the molds of the Tigres' developing squad, serving as a 2nd/3rd line backchecker providing some sandpaper to help them with his physicality.

Vladimir Tonov, 37
Nation of Origin: Polkopia
Team signed: Goose Bay Flames
Contract Detail: 3 Years, $3.6 million(12 million/year)
Information: Vladimir Tonov, after a long career in Polkopia, decided to jump into a foreign water when he signed with Goose Bay Flames in a fairly reasonable contract. His scoring abilities, according to the scouts, still seems to be decent but it is questionable whether he will adapt to more physical playing style of QHL. His age might also slow him down, make Other than that, he is expected to serve as a mentor to Mikael Baestrchi, a talented Vostvento Beothuk whose raw talents needs to be refined.

Pavel Smirnov, 22
Nation of Origin: Vaugania
Team signed: Kingston Knights
Contract Detail: 4 Years, $8 million(2 million/year)
Information: Excellent Backchecker, Pavel Smirnov is one of the top young guns who's expected to be a top-calibre player within 5 years. While young and relatively inexperienced, his defensive capabilities as a shutdown forward caught the attention of Kingston Knights, who decided to sign the Vauganian as soon as he was available on the market. On the league, he will be placed at the third line, where he is expected to eat minutes and do his expertise in Penalty Killing. His offensive upside is still a question and will be seen and addressed at the season.

Team Reviews

Attawapiskat Avalanche had a disappointing season. Lee-Kulikov duo once again dominated the scoring, but poor goaltending and injuries to other role players caused them to miss out on the playoffs for the first time in 6 years in what was a critical season for the Avs. They needs to reduce reliance on scoring from its top line. Entering the Free Agency, they better find a good goaltender who can replace Lang Yoon, who's far too old to play in spectacular form.

Rouyn-Noranda Huskies did not have a particularly standout season, but powerful scoring from most of its players helped them to reach playoffs. It is a huge question however, whether they will be able to fight off much stronger teams in the knockout stage.

Val d'Or Foreurs once again played well, largely thanks to a spectacular season by Anthony Mantha and Tae Min Tanaquache. Their depth of players proved to be a huge plus for them, as they kept themselves strong and intact despite injuries to some main players.

Ottawa Senators had another strong season, as their top 2 Forward lines ripped apart the conference with Leclair free from injury. On goaltending, Bernie Langevins played splendidly in what was an Asselin-worthy season and their defense was solid as usual. Now with a very good team and Nordiques not as strong as they used to be, Sens need to make extra push to take the puck back to Ottawa.

The success of Kingston Knights this regular season shocked almost anyone in the nation. Alexandre Rioux and Irwin Harper scored 111 and 80 points while the rookies Dave Clark and Sylvain Turcotte also stood and scored 70+ points each. While their defense was abysmal, Henry Power managed to save the team with a decent season. However, lots of questions remain as they set off to their first playoffs in 8 seasons.

On the other side, the collapse of Sherbrooke Phoenix stunned everyone else. While all knew that Bernie Langevins' departure to Ottawa and Gilles Clark's retirement would cause some holes to fill in, they never knew that it would be this big. Yannick Holsson, the 14th Overall pick from 2010 draft(so, 4 years ago), played decent but that was it. Francois Decarie's battle with Leukaemia left Phoenix without a good goal scorer for most of the season. It should be interesting this off-season to see what will happen to the team that hugely disappointed their fans with a very underwhelming season.

Montreal Canadiens once again found themselves out of playoffs easily. Horrible coaching by Gordie Cunneyworth, inconsistency of goaltender Martin Caprice and lack of scoring have combined to plague in what was a painful season for Habs. The positive news is that they will at least place in Top 5/6 for this year's QHL draft.

Quebec Nordiques clenched the Western Conference......for the 13th consecutive year. They didn't land as bad as they expected to be when 5 players of its main cast retired this off-season. Younger players took over and played decent, providing support to Colm Strojovic, who scored personal-best 145 points. But will they extend the magic and make a run for another Cup? That's another question.

Victoriaville Tigres didn't need any bona fide stars. In fact, they played great without any. Tigres placed fourth in what was a largely boring, but good season for them. Eg Lamont proved himself as a QHL-calibre coach, as he pulled excellence out of mediocre players. Can he do the same for Tigres? We'll see.

Shawinigan Cataractes once again played a horrible season, placing last in Western Conference for the third season in a row. To make things worse, Chris Despres placed the team in sale for half the time, making the team performance suffer even further with rumors of possible relocation. There are still lights on the end of the tunnel for Cats however, as they found a new local owner and got several high-quality prospects down the road in minors/universities.

Blainville-Boisbriand Armada had a little bit of disappointing but still decent season. Most of their forwards suffered a drop in their points, but that was largely compensated and forgiven by the Defense's excellent works and Etienne Park's legendary performance down in the pipes. However, out of all 16 teams in the playoffs, they are the only ones without players with 60+ points. So, they won't likely make it past first round(or two) due to their scoring woes.

Chicoutimi Sagueneeans didn't have much improvements from last season, due to rookies' teething problems adjusting into the QHL and poor defense. But they do have some hopes ahead, with great flashes of talents from its players. Gradually in time they will make their way back into prominence in QHL. Just not now.

Rimouski Oceanic had a great season, placing 4th into the . Their core clicked in perfectly and solidly, scored goals in bunches while the D and G were decent. Rookie Vladimir Zykov was excellent, scoring 40 goals and 71 points in his debuting season. This team could very much be a contender and possibly win the Cup.

Team Reviews

Gaspe Oilers' long years of rebuilding finally paid off with this season. Almost everything clicked in right place at right time for the Oilers, as dominated the ice for large part of the season and placed 4th place at what was a relatively weak Eastern Conference. If they continue to build upon their highly talented offeensive core(but slightly shaky defensive counterpart), they will be able to challenge St.John's Celtics very soon. However for now, they have to get through Saint John Acadiens before making a journey for the Cup.

Acadie-Bathurst Titan had a decent season: There were very few injuries to players, local prospects stepping up at right time and of course, their Captain Alexandre Kanibaweeke's excellent play as a shutdown defenseman. But can they perform against all odds and beat the Celtics in Conference Quarterfinals? We'll see.

Moncton Blades are slowly getting there. But that arrived too late at the season, as the Blades suffered for most of the season on everywhere. It was painful for fans, but at least they can look forward to next season(when they will improve a lot more).

The very pre-season prediction came true for PLI Islanders, who had a mediocre season with bunch of nobodies. Their pool of prospects are still very poor and they do not have enough money to buy/trade for a star. What a shame because of their special status as the sole professional sports team in this island of 170,000. They would probably be in a search for a new GM and coach this season in order to start from blank slate.

Saint John Acadiens once again had a solid season to place themselves as one of the Conference's top contenders. While they were mediocre in offensive terms, more than enough of their defense made up for it by allowing one of the fewest goals in the league. With Serge Bernier in his career season and their defensive system perfectly working against better teams, things should go well in their favour in playoffs.

Halifax Tempest had its best season in history, with almost every player breaking their personal bests as the team won its 5th consecutive Acadie division title. However, they were largely shadowed by the St.John's Celtics for entire season, increasing their desire to be deep in playoffs and win the Cup. They better too, for fans are starting to get impatient in Halifax.

For St.John's Celtics, things went just as good as they did last season. They once again topped the Eastern Conference, fending off the likes of Halifax, Quebec and Ottawa to clench Alexandre V Trophy(for team with most points in regular season). Maxwell Belmont-Deschamps had a career season and Vladimir Tsoi finally made a name for himself as a replacement for Belmont-Deschamps in long term future. Not only that, Logan Guthrie went with full force and made a huge name for himself with a 50-goal,97 point season with 400 Penalty minutes in his belt, breaking the QHL Record with most minutes in the penalty box.
With these individual achievements and great performance from supporting cast, Celtics was a very difficult team to beat, and will certainly be a most-likely contender for the cup.

Gander Jets missed the playoffs at the very last day, after a month long battle to keep in race with injury-decimated squad. They, despite lack of top-tier talent, still managed to fight well and barring injuries and rebuilding, will most likely be in playoffs again next season.

Sept-Iles Aurora went off to have its worst season in franchise history, only winning 4 games and with no players scoring more than 30 points. The only positive side to their horrible season is that they will most likely be getting a number 1 pick for upcoming QHL draft in Ottawa this July.

Baie-Comeau Drakkar suffered a lot, dropping from 4th to 10th within a season. This is largely credited to disappointing performance from almost all players, including captain Marc Kim. They can surely bounce back and be a contender next season, but needs to make splashes off-season to do so.

Iqaluit Silver Wings seemed to have all of their building efforts paid off, when the team surprisingly clenched the playoff spot on the very last day of the regular season with 4-3 OT win over Attawapiskat Avalanche. Rookie Raoul Jang did splendid job scoring consistently while Dan Erhat and Keith Materson was decent in pipes. What a shame that their opponents for the First round will be Halifax, who will probably clench the series with ease.

Goose Bay Flames decided to make some FA acquisitions and trades to benefit its rapidly aging squad, which worked well as they placed 6th in the tough Eastern Conference. But it is unlikely that they will make it past their provincial rivals, who are much younger and stronger. Flames were hard team to play against but often runs out of their gas by the end of second period, which costed them lots of games this season.

Labrador City Freeze excelled again, but only on the back of goaltender Mark Liu and franchise player Pierre Drouin. They otherwise got a very average squad and lacked much depth. So, it will be a huge test for Freeze to see if the rest of the team can step up and show what they worth for. It will be interesting to see them in this year's playoffs.

WESTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

Quebec Nordiques 3–3 Val d'Or Foreurs (4–3 OT)
Quebec Nordiques 1-0 Val d'Or Foreurs
Val d'Or Foreurs 0-3 Quebec Nordiques
Val d'Or Foreurs 1–0 Quebec Nordiques
Quebec Nordiques 0–0 Val d'Or Foreurs (2–1 2OT)

Quebec Nordiques overperformed, with Kingstoner Bernie Kamikwajaang, Sicoutian Pierre Payette and local Glenn McConnell stepping up to replace the retired legends from its last 2 dynasties. Jeff Na had another great season and Colm Strojovic was league's best player once again. Meanwhile, Anthony Mantha's Val d'Or Foreurs gained success, with huge depth of mostly-local players proved to be a huge plus. Regardless, Nordiques entered the series as favourites and eventually won as expected.

In game 1, Vincent Leroux(Québec) scored the winning goal on 14:56 of Overtime to give Nordiques a 4-3 victory. Colm Strojovic's goal made a huge difference in Game 2, as the Foreurs fought back and limited them to 17 shots on goal. On Game 3, Quebec scored 3 unanswered goals in the second period to win the game 3-0. Val d'Or avoided a clean sweep with Anthony Mantha's Game-winning goal in 2:45 of 1st period of Game 4 at home, but that's it as Québec controlled game 5, with Jeff Na making 36 saves in a 1-0 Québec shutout.

Ottawa Senators 3–0 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Ottawa Senators 3-0 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 1–1 Ottawa Senators (1–2 OT)
Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 4–3 Ottawa Senators
Ottawa Senators 2–4 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 1–4 Ottawa Senators

Ottawa Senators didn't have much trouble in the series as they easily dispatched the Huskies off in 6 games. The Senators, bolstered by the return of Jordan Leclair from injury(that kept him out most of the regular season), quickly took the charge when they won their first 3 games, with Game 1 and 2 in 3-0 shutouts and Game 3 with a OT winner by third-liner Matt Greening. Huskies managed to bounce back, winning their next 2 games with a hot 5-point streak from local Michel-Sebastien Dea, but ran out of gas as the Sens won the Game 6 4-1(with a hattrick from Captain Henrik Larsson).

Rimouski Océanic 1–3 Kingston Knights
Rimouski Océanic 3-6 Kingston Knights
Kingston Knights 1-1 Rimouski Océanic (2-1 OT)
Kingston Knights 1–1 Rimouski Océanic (2–1 2OT)
Kingston Sweeps 4-0

Kingston Knights, off from 111 point performance by Alexandre Rioux and its rookies'(7 in number) better-than-expected performance, have finally broke the 9-year playoff drought. Rimouski meanwhile was off to 3rd place finish and did not place lower than 7th place in last 9 seasons and entered the series as favourites to win.
However, the hype of the home crowd was quickly shot down when Kingston outplayed them in what was a 3-1 game 1 loss. The Game 2 went on to be slightly more exciting, with Sylvain Turcotte(Kingston), Nat Fontaine(Rimouski) and Irwin Harper(Kingston) netting a pair each in what was a 6-3 win at the ParkSang Centre. As Kingston decided to roll the credits on Oceanic's season with Mikhail Komarov(the league's best pest this season but an offensive liability)'s Double Overtime goal that lifted the Knights into the very next round, as the Oceanic had to watch what would've been their cup-winning season finish miserably.

Victoriaville Tigres 1–0 Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
Victoriaville Tigres 1-2 Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 0-0 Victoriaville Tigres (1-0 OT)
Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 0-1 Victoriaville Tigres
Victoriaville Tigres 1–1 Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (2-1 2OT)
Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 0–0 Victoriaville Tigres (0-1 2OT)
Victoriaville wins 4-2

In a tougher-than-expected first round series against Etienne Park's Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, the Victoriaville Tigres prevailed after 6 gruelling games, which included 2 overtime wins from Andre Gong(Victoriaville's captain) goals. But for large part it was a very boring game in terms of QBC broadcasts. With both teams playing defensively-oriented style of playing and both Etienne Park and Nathan Tagak playing almost flawlessly in pipes, it lacked offensive flair that other series showed and thus, showed low television ratings. What a shame, because it was nevertheless entertaining to watch.

EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

St.John's Celtics 1–0 Acadie-Bathurst Titan
St.John's Celtics 3–2 Acadie-Bathurst Titan
Acadie-Bathurst Titan 4-4 St.John's Celtics(4-5 3OT)
Acadie-Bathurst Titan 4–1 St.John's Celtics
St.John's Celtics 3–3 Acadie-Bathurst Titan (4–3 2OT)
Acadie-Bathurst Titan 0–0 St.John's Celtics (1–0 OT)
St.John's Celtics 5–5 Acadie-Bathurst Titan (2–0 2OT)

This series surprisingly took longer than most expected it to be, as it exceeded everyone's expectation of being a very boring sweep by the Celtics.
The audience were shocked when Titan, the underdogs in the series, took the first two games with most of Celtics' forwards blocked and counterplayed by the Celtics' fiery offence. For the most of the time they struggled to play and were limited to under 20 shots on goal. But the Celtics didn't give up. After suffering humiliation at home, Celtics then bounced back by taking the next two in Bathurst and finally beating the Titan in their home at a crucial Game 5. Alexandre Kanibaweeke's Catenaccio struck back in Game 6, but it was Celtics who would prevail in a double-overtime game-winning goal by enforcer-scorer Logan Guthrie.

Halifax Tempest 0–1 Iqaluit Silver Wings
Halifax Tempest 5–0 Iqaluit Silver Wings
Halifax Tempest 1–1 Iqaluit Silver Wings (1-2 OT)
Iqaluit Silver Wings 3–0 Halifax Tempest
Halifax Tempest 3–2 Iqaluit Silver Wings
Iqaluit Silver Wings 3–3 Halifax Tempest (4–3 2OT)

Here was a huge matchdown between Halifax and Iqaluit. Iqaluit, the latest QHL expansion team(founded in 2009), was off to its first taste of playoffs in its history. With the youngest squad of players in Eastern Conference, they looked forward to make some splashes with some promising up-and-coming players in Raoul Jang and George Howe. Halifax, on the other hand, was off to a 174-point season with career seasons from most players from its talented core of players. The E-G-S("eggs") line was one of most productive through the season, while Hal Niemes demonstrated that he is one of the best QHL goalies in his era. With that and their defensive success, the Tempest were easily favoured to take the series handily. But things totally went different as the inexperienced Silver Wings overpowered Tempest in 6 games.

After a great Game 1 shutout win, Dan Erhat was treated to a humiliating 5-0 blowout. Ahead of Game 3, Samuel Kim announced that he will start Keith Masterson, former QIS all-star with University of New Brunswick. It was a huge make-or-break choice, which fortunately worked well as he went on to block 47 out of 48 Tempest shots in what was a 2-1 OT win. The Silver Wings then went on to dominate right in Game 4 with a hat-trick from George Howe. Tempest avoided elimination in Game 5 as Sang Goo Lee scored a game-winning goal in the middle of second period to keep the things going. But Iqaluit was victorious in Game 6, 4-3, as Raoul Jang managed to score a hat-trick, including the series-clencher in 19:01 of Second Overtime period.

Labrador City Freeze 3–3 Goose Bay Flames (4-3 2OT)
Labrador City Freeze 1-2 Goose Bay Flames
Goose Bay Flames 4–1 Labrador City Freeze
Goose Bay Flames 3–2 Labrador City Freeze
Labrador City Freeze 1–0 Goose Bay Flames
Goose Bay Flames 0–4 Labrador City Freeze
Labrador City Freeze 0–1 Goose Bay Flames

Flames were the surprise team of the Eastern Conference this season, making into playoffs with a very old group of players. Xavier Laflamme is 41, while Vladimir Tonov and Mikka Verkoff are both 38, while 9 other players in this squad are over 30. Heck, they even have a rocking chair and schoolkids(not players, but kids and nephews of veterans) doing homework in locker room at Spiritair Saddledome. But they still managed to play well and entered the series with 6th seed(avoiding Halifax or St.John's)
Labrador City Freeze, on the other hand, is largely young and average squad with Mark Liu and Pierre Drouin carrying them to third-place finish.

The Freeze won the Game 1, 4-3, after Marc-Andre Lee(Freeze) tied the game with 12 seconds left in the game and Pierre Drouin scoring a Game-winning goal at 12:00 into the second overtime period. After a bitter loss to its provincial rical, Goose Bay then came back by taking the next 2 games in Goose Bay, with Mikael Baertschi and Xavier Laflamme each scoring a pair. Freeze then tied the series back with 2 consecutive wins, including a memorable 4-goal performance by Pierre Drouin, to settle the series in Moulson Centre. The Game 7 was intense, but the Freeze seemed to run out of gas, as it only took Xavier Laflamme's goal in the first period to eliminate the Freeze for good.

Gaspé Oilers 2–2 Saint John Acadiens (2-3 2OT)
Gaspé Oilers 3–0 Saint John Acadiens
Saint John Acadiens 3–5 Gaspé Oilers
Saint John Acadiens 1–2 Gaspé Oilers
Gaspé Oilers 1–1 Saint John Acadiens (2–1 OT)

Acadiens' Captain Michel Bergeron's goal in 9:12 of Second Overtime period gave Acadiens its win in Game 1. The Oilers then took Game 2, 3-0, with Marc-Edouard scoring 2 goals and an assist in what was an Oilers' blowout win. In Game 3, 5 different Gaspe players(Brennan Hall, Marc-Edouard Labadie, Igor Yakupov, Johann Sung, Mark Rodzwinski) scored goals, giving them a 5-3 win. Encouraged by that, the Acadiens then won the Game 4, 2-1, as Alex Han scored the game winner with 1:02 left in regulation after the puck deflected off goaltender Serge Bernier's head, popped around and landed right outside the puck crease where he was unable to see. Then Gaspe went off victorious in a 2-1 win, with a series-clencher from Johann Sung at the 12th minute into Overtime.

During 3 years of absence from the international competition, Quebec Handball League were renamed as Bundesliga Handball 2017-2018, to avoid any confusion with Quebec Hockey League(both have QHL as shortened form). Many changes happened during the offseason, which includes some controversial trades and Free Agent signups. Sept-Iles Aurora was bought by an agricultural magnate Jussi Theodore, who then moved it to a small manufacturing city in the Southwestern tip called Sarnia. At the same time an expansion occurred with Winnipeg Giants and Kenora Thunderwolves into the fold, opening the QHL to Westernmost provinces of Mantioba and Ontario.

The huge surprise this season was Attawapiskat Avalanche certainly had a huge bounceback season, largely thanks to excellent performance from Vauganian goaltender Raphael Roux and career seasons from the Kim-Kulikov Duo(scoring 98 and 103 points respectively). Kingston Knights surprisingly dominated the list, who were either physically dominating or firing on all cylinders, topping the league despite with mediocre defense(which fortunately improved a lot with addition of Fillip Tennefjord). Quebec Nordiques on the other hand, was on a disappointing season with Colm Strojovic out of the season battling lymphoma. Despite losing a huge part in their offence they somewhat made into the playoffs, but now seem to be paper dragons that cannot contend for the Cup.

And of course. Armada and Canadiens' offensive woes continued this year as they repeatedly struggled to score, and only legendary(again) performance from Etienne Park and bounceback season from Martin Caprice blasted them into the playoffs. On the other hand, Val d'or Foreurs didn't lose any of their scoring touch after Anthony Mantha got traded offseason for highly-touted prospects: The team did even better and managed to put a successful season placing 5th.

Iqaluit Silver Wings was a huge surprise on this conference, springing from being the worst team in QHL 2 years ago to a perennial contender with elite players in every side. Raoul Jang and George Howe were ripping up the league while Materson-Erhat goaltending tandem, as well as 20-year old defenseman Will Nieustrom were doing great job to keep the team in control. But can they continue that into playoffs?

Labrador City Freeze, on the other hand, was on its tailspin crash following departure of Head Coach and General Manager Roland Dupuis, which left them high and dry. Very few reached their full potential to play for the early 3 quarters of the season and the team was largely in shambles during games, much to the disappointment of the fans. They made some moves and slowly got better, but it wasn't enough as they missed the playoffs in a tiebreaker.

Goose Bay Flames entered the season with retirement of its starting goalie Mikka Verkoff and captain of 15 years Xavier Laflamme, leaving a huge hole in the offense. Fortunately the mend was somewhat filled well by winger Mikael Baertschi and center Seth Monahan, with the veteran netminder Stuart McDonald, who had

Halifax Tempest had a fairly slow start, but a career season from pickup Anthony Mantha and Captain Sang Goo Lee helped them to be back to the dominance. Rimouski Oceanic on the other hand was unable to get back on track after a disastrous first half of the season(when most of their stars were injured), and barely made it into the playoffs with a tiebreaker.

.....And Kingston Knights won the back-to-back Prenneau Cup in what was a spectacular year for them: Alexandre Browne, who was acquired from Labrador City Freeze in exchange of Martin Languedoc, Greg Pavelski and a second-round pick, have shone in what was an excellent goaltending tandem with Henry Power. The defense was much improved from last time, with Vauganian Fillip Tennefjord making an instant impact as a rookie. At the age of 22 he led all rookies in average ice time per game (27 minutes, 36 seconds), primarily playing at back end as linemate to captain Xavier Goo.

Alexandre Rioux initially struggled to score but managed to finish it well with a 48 goal, 112 point season. Irwin Harper was on fire when he was healthy enough to get on the ice, but injuries continue to be a concern for him as he missed 48 games in regular season and 9 in playoffs. The bottom Six were very dominant, with lots of grit, speed and physicality in the game. Agitator Mikhail Komarov, enforcer Rene Bourassa and PKer Ernest Gilling, were just some.

With the combination of this and the excellent team performance, the Knights have managed to reach the halfway to their journey towards a QHL dynasty(minimum 4 Cups within ~8 seasons). Go Knights Go!

Major Jr.Hockey in Quebec: Royal Quebec Hockey League Regular Season 2014-2015

In Royal Kingdom of Quebec and its Esquarian Dominions, the highest level of junior hockey is major junior, and is governed by the Royal Quebec Hockey League(RQHL), which itself has four constituent leagues: the Western Hockey League, the Central Hockey League, the Maritime Hockey League and the Southern Esquarian Mestaruus-Liiga. The rules are governed by the Hockey Quebec and Hockey Southern Esquarium(HSE),the National Administrations of hockey in all levels, while local hockey associations administer players and leagues for their region. Many provinces and states organize regional and provincial championship tournaments, and the highest age groups in Quebec and its dominions also participate in national championships.

This year, Churchill, Manitoba hosted the Cup for the first time in its 25 years of history. Oh boy, the Knights are on their way to QHL's next dynasty, as they won their 3rd Prenneau Cup in a fantastic year for them. Both Power and Browne were spectacular on back-end, and Filip Tennefjord, who recorded 19 points in playoffs, proved to everyone that he certainly deserves a huge contract in the off-season. Rioux was on another marvellous season with 64 goals and 117 points, while Sanctii star Thomas Clovius scored 96 points in his rookie campaign. Dave Clark had a bit of down year stats-wise after being named the 17th captain of the franchise, but still finished with 87 points while Sylvain Turcotte and Pavel Smirnov each got 96 and 89.

But what will happen to them in offseason is that makes us wander as well. Will Pavel Smirnov, after 3 years in Kingston, stay for more cups or leave to be a standout star? How much will Henry Power and Ernest Gilling, who both used to be integral pieces in the team but now expendable, will they be let go? We'll find out very soon.
