Wow, we made it to the Ultimate Frisbee playoffs! I don't really know how all of this works, apparently we were tied with the Frogs but...we made it through! Maybe it's just a bonus for having really high-scoring games. Which tired me out. And I think the rest of us too.

That means tomorrow we get to play a couple more games. Hopefully all three. But sometime in there we have to build a car for Heiki. Not like a train car, like, a one-person car. That you just roll down a hill with. None of us know what we're doing hopefully there are instructions

It's exciting to be on Council Island. None of us have ever left the country before and I talked to the girls from Ervimnal and they hadn't either. We were a little nervous but Miron (one of the Uncarg boys) said that any region with places like Polgar City and Hyde Park can't be all bad. I don't know what he's talking about

But there are a lot of different people to meet. In Zwangzug the troops are just organized on council level, though I guess in the countries that have been around for like a hundred years the councils are all more organized. I didn't know that there would be so many people of different grades and genders in a troop together! Some of the kids even told me they had their own games events back home. I still don't know who picked us out, maybe because we just happened to have the right number of people for a troop? Oh well, I feel lucky to be here either way.

Miron told me they're going to go sing campfire songs when they get a chance. Maybe we can come too. Although I'm not sure how many of the other troops will recognize the Uncarg ones...oh well, maybe good to do some research.

ScoutSport Stories
By Terrance Robinson, Platypus Patrol Scribe

It was a smooth setup, a long hard first day, and a really good campfire. That's my first day at ScoutSport.

We got in to Gidney from Cranbourne at about sixteen yesterday, plenty of time to set up the camp and go meet people. That includes some non-human people, the Ursines from the Bear Scout Association had a camp in our regional area. The BSA even owns a Scout camp on the other side of Council Island, but their homeland is far away in Bears Armed. Yes, that Bears Armed, the ones that just went to the World Cup finals in soccer.

There are guys and girls in from all over the world! Lots of languages, lots of interpreters. The B-P Cup patrol from Euterpe Isles, the Frogs, stands out with eight Scouts speaking six different native languages between them! Each of their islands speaks a different tongue, not just dialects but whole new languages. The Vegans have a really tricky language. A lot of the Babbage Islands Scouts speak three languages, both official tongues (English and Esperanto) and a third language sometimes local and sometimes from school. But we all find ways to make ourselves understood.

I wish we understood flying discs better. That was the sport for the first day, "ultimate Frisbee". Seven of us at a time trying to pass the disc from one Scout to another until someone catches it past the goal line for a point. But if the disc touches the ground the other team takes over. With only one player resting at a time this was tiring, six games had us all beat. We lost our first five, won our last one against some kids from the Blouman Empire to stay out of last in our pool.

So we don't play in the frisbee tournament tomorrow. We'll watch a little, there's a couple of girls I really want to watch, but we'll spend a lot of time building our gravity car. Every patrol gets a kit, we have 2 1/2 days to build it, they'll inspect for safety, and the following day the cars race down a hill a few times. All gravity-powered, they call it the Gravity Derby. Dylan Elliott will drive for us, he's only 13 but he's pretty smart and really agile. He'll fit nicely in the small space.

Well, we were pretty tired when it came time for the campfire. But it was worth going. Our regional area campfire was visited by Brad and Marilou Moore. Brad's the five-eighth for Woomera, my favorite Super 20 team, he's awesome. He's from Green Jello Salad and will play for them in the league World Cup coming up. And his wife Marilou just finished up with Bountiful's soccer team in the Globe Cup. They're out now. But they had no losses in six matches, losing on away goals after two draws twice. She was talking about what it feels like to play Ciudad Soluca, a team with lots of history (they won Champions' Cup 23, I think she said), in their stadium in the world's greatest club tournament with all the historic banners and stuff. And they got a 0-0 draw! Mr. and Mrs. Moore were both Scouts, and they both got the equivalent of our Order of the Jumbuck as teenagers. They shared life lessons they learned in Scouting. And with both of them pro athletes we all listened!

It's time to hit the sack and write more tomorrow.

From the Logs of Brian Mandela, 18, Patrol Leader, Flames Patrol, Freedom's Altar, Yesopalitha

Day 1 was a disaster for us. I wonder if any of my patrol knows that our country is actually known to be pretty good at Ultimate Frisbee, cause we sure weren't. Winning just one game out of six, we didn't make it to the knockout rounds, and really embarrassed our nation today.

My patrol tends to say that I take this way more seriously than I should. But I ask you, if you have a chance to represent all the scouts of your nation at an international scouting jamboree, would you not take things more seriously than not?

Better events will come, I hope, for the Flame Patrol of Freedom's Altar. But even otherwise, I am enjoying my stay here, learning about a different culture, meeting and making friends from all over the world.

For is not the point of scouting to broaden one's imaginations and horizon?

I believe it.

Inside an office half way up the government monolith an aide brought a manilla folder to Minister Michael Descoteaux, head of the Department for Youth Affairs Sub-Department for Scouting. "I've got the reports back from Council Island. 63 Swells came twelfth out of twenty one playing something called Diskapalooza. Means they won't be playing tomorrow."

Descoteaux thumbed through a series of photographs showing teenagers wearing the UA scouting uniform playing a multitude of other countries scouts at ultimate frisbee. "If they won't be playing tomorrow, what will they be doing?" He stopped on a photograph of his daughter, the seventeen year old Orlene, throwing the frisbee clear of the playing field.

"The kits for the gravity derby will be released."

Also inside the folder was a list of profiles of the members of 63 Swells. "Miss Sergeyeva should shine tomorrow then. I do look forward to seeing what they build. You have scheduled my flight to visit them with the department on day four?"

"Yes sir. Although sir, I implore you to let us send the scouts the Department of Engineering's schematics."

The minister scoffed. "63 Swells will compete on their own merits. Anyone who dares think about helping them will be shot." "You cannot do that sir." "Fired then." "Or that." "Dock their pay?" "Yes sir."

Wow, we made it to third place! I hadn't realized that all of us would get to play three games, no matter what. But I guess that makes sense for having these overall standings.

Anyway, the last game was really close. Actually all of them were, except for the winners--they were the ones who beat us, they're just really good. But all the rest of us needed extra rounds. It was great, Lilo just threw it and Heiki made this amazing catch! They were the only ones on either team who weren't about ready to fall asleep, I think At least some of us get to rest now and then. I had to rest early in the semifinal and it wasn't really close, they were pulling ahead, but then after I came back in, it wasn't close either.

Julia says her big sister plays ultimate in college, just for fun but there used to be some teams that were really good at it. Apparently she was a Girl Scout too when she was really little but she didn't stick with it for very long. But she's glad that he's getting to do this. I still have no idea why they picked us, I guess I'd be really jealous if I heard about this otherwise...

And then we put the car together. Heiki wants to call it the Rotblau. Most of us think it's dumb to give cars names but nobody is telling her that. Except we talked to the Uncarg boys again and apparently they're naming theirs too, the "Yeti" or something weird. We still think that's a dumb idea, but as long as they're having fun.

As the paint dried on the larger parts of 63 Swells derby car, Ogier and Anna sat on the edge of the field watching the last minutes of the match between Nilveneu of the Northern Sunrise Islands and Coatl of Andossa Se Mitrin Vega. It was turning out to be a pretty close match and now that it couldn't affect their standings they could actually admire the technique and game. Not to mention the other scouts.

"I wish they'd let us play sports like this at school back home." Anna said, letting her attention wander from the game. "Instead of stuff like hockey or fencing."

Ogier was paying a little more attention to the game and took a moment to respond. "I dunno. It's a bit like rugby, but with a frisbee and you can't hit people. Or basketball, since you can't move."

"I wish we'd play more basketball at home too."

"They tried to introduce it a few years ago, you're just young enough to have missed it. It didn't really stick. Anyway, I'm sure if you wanted to you could find a basketball team."

A little further back, two of the troops handlers watched with measured disinterest. One of them was holding a manilla folder with a little more force than strictly necessary. "Did you hear Orlene's father is coming to visit?" Asked the first.

"I didn't know parents were allowed here? Why does he get special treatment?" Scoffed the second, dismissing the thought with a wave of the folder.

"Because he's Michael Descoteaux, our boss." The second handler went a little pale and stopped waving the folder. "Yep. You did get the memo about Engdep's plans, right? Not given them to the kids or anything?"

"I'm not stupid, I was planning on burning it tonight at the camp fire."

"You were thinking about giving it to them, weren't you."

"Just a little."

Robert Blount acquainted the palm of his right hand with his forehead. Tyler Muldomak sat a few feet away trying to remember which side of the hammer to use. "You can't seriously be this stupid."

"Oh!" Muldomak's face lit up with sudden realization. "The flat side, right! I knew that, I swear." He got to pounding a few nails in. Manny Hento came over with the paint, setting down the heavy cans with a hefty grunt.

Blount was happy with what he saw. "Great colors, Hento! And that looks like some real high-quality paint... and it's a Karditani brand. Where'd you get that?"

"I, uh, my dad runs a... an auto repair shop. He let me take some of his paint when he heard we'd be building a car. He said that black with highlights in that other color, t-t-tu..."

Blount spun the second can around and read the label. "Tungsten. That's a silvery-brown color, right?"

Hento nodded vigorously. "Yeah! That's it."

"Did you bring the brushes?"

"Uh..." The young boy of Nozaman decent turned around and bolted off.

Blount facepalmed again. "I don't like this. In my eyes, the line between stupidity and insanity is starting to blur."

"What was that, boss?" Muldomak turned his head slightly, leading his current hammerstroke to land squarely on his thumb. "OW!"

Blount quickly grabbed his right arm with his left hand, to keep himself from facepalming again. I'm going to have a big red spot on my forehead before this week is through. "REIGNS!"

The tall black kid who had been sitting against a tree snoozing jumped up, startled, just before his pants fell down. "What's up, cheif?"

Blount covered his eyes. "First, pull your pants up and buckle your belt. I really don't need to see that." Once Reigns' pants were back in the regulation position, Blount went over and took the hammer Muldomak. "Go and ice that thumb to keep the swelling down. Reigns, you work on planes, right?"

"Uh, yeah. I do more work with helicopters, but I know some stuff about planes."

"Can you take charge of the gravity cart build?"

Reigns strolled over to the halfway-finished chassis and gave it a quick look-over. "Yeah, I can make this work. I even took a course on that... thing, that makes airplanes go faster."

"uh... aerodynamics?"

"Yeah! That's it. I can make it all sleek-like so it'll go fast."

Blount handed over the hammer. "All right, get cracking then. Hento is here to help, especially with the painting, and I'll send over Wombo to help you."

"Wait, I'm actually going to be in charge? Where're you going?"

"I've got to go look up the safety regulations for the carts. Just do what you think it is best, and I'll be back later to make the final adjustments later so it's all legal."

"Alright, cheif. I'll do ya proud."

(OOC: Credit where it's due, to Internet translators, and the anonymous lyricists of old.)

"Grüß Gott!"

Sarah Shermonds whirled around, narrowing her eyes. "Wer bist du denn?"

Rodion Jakievar laughed. "Oh, I'm Rodion, from Ayrul Ridge...what?"

"Oh, you. Congratulations, then, nice job."

"You too. And your troop."

"Thanks, I guess."

"Hey, come on. You apparently are good at tug of war?"

"Yeah, seriously. I didn't expect us to be this good, but I guess we were well-rested from rushing through the compass thing so quickly..."

"That doesn't even make sense."

"Заткнись," she grinned.

Rodion rolled his eyes. "How's your car coming along?"

"Uh...it's...coming."

"Mmhmm. Good thing we have a couple days, we sort of tried to race through it last night and--yeah."

"Are you guys in the bracket, too?"

"Oh yeah! Other half as you, I think. So we can meet in the final!"

"Or third-place playoff. On our form."

"Hey, we're actually good."

"You lost to Spade troop, right? And we have them first."

"Well...there's consolation rounds too. It could happen."

"Sure, okay. I'll let you get back to driving your car, so you can practice crashing for when we beat you in two days?"

"I'm not driving, and if you wanted us to lose, you'd keep distracting me--I'm more or less reading most of the instructions."

"Do you actually know what you're doing?"

"Not at all, but I'd be disappointed if I let someone else do it and they got it wrong."

"That's the spirit...?"

"Oh, I keep smiling, whatever, I don't tell them."

"I guess that's good."

"We'll be fine. Like the song goes. I'm going down the highway/I'm going 'bout eighty-five/The policeman pulled me over/And said I couldn't drive."

"The highway?"

"It's just a song."

"Eighty-five what?"

"You know what I'm talking about, right? I'm singing eener-meener/And a miner-moe...no?...you guys have to come to our campfire."

It feels good to be in first place. A lot better than second. Even if they're both happening at once.

So yeah, we finished second in the tug-of-war...losing the final to Spade. Again. Which, I guess it was nice that we got another shot at them, this way it was definitely fair. Still, annoying.

Except not, since we're still ahead in the all-around competition! That's very cool. And easier to celebrate when there's a lot of us together, I think, where individually it's like there can only be one winner...I don't know. But we have to keep in control for the next few days.

So, that meant back to work and finally tinkering with the car. Thankfully, that's done with. Yes, we passed. I assume everyone did. But I'm glad I'm not riding in it.

Heiki at least can focus on that tomorrow since she's not doing the Octothon until the last day. Neither is the Uncarg driver. (Although I'm pretty sure I heard two of them arguing over whether they could make last-minute changes to the car, now that they've passed and gotten it out of the way...) But as far as the octothon goes we're split and doing all five on day six, trying to save the best for last.

I'm sort of wondering if I could go out for cross-country once I get back to high school. But I don't know if I have time for it. It does sound cool but after all this it would be kind of a letdown, I think. (Plus, no compasses!) Might as well try to appreciate this while we're here. Nothing like it, just one island being its own entire country? Kind of?

...and, at present, "appreciate" translates into "hanging out with a bunch of different people and trying to explain the different kind of cookies and stuff we sell back home." Long story.

(OOC: Okay, idiotic string of mistakes there on my part. Names retconned as appropriate, which is pretty much everywhere--believe me, I did try to figure out how to run with that but just gave up. :p )

The Kerlagrad Courier
Scouts, sports, and stuff

In the region of "The Scout Promise," Scout troops have gathered from around the world to participate in a series of sporting events that pit troops of eight against each other. 168 scouts are taking part, ranging in age from eleven to nineteen.

Their ingenuity, certainly, is to be admired. (They build cars! Not the train type! That roll down hills.) And as for their sporting excellence--well. The first few days, pitting teams against each other, were all well and good; in tugs-of-war [? -ed] and Ultimate Frisbee first-to-seventeen competitions, as long as the teams are evenly matched (and they mostly were), we expect to see the same kinds of margins of victory. But it's in the last competition, the "octothon," that they've really shined. Many of the winning scores compare favorably with most Olympic decathletes!

And it's the scouts from Aygul Ridge (and Fuender Forest) who've been leading the way. Daniil Eger might have counted himself satisfied with a third-place finish in the initial hundred-meter dash, that is, until his compatriots took over. All four of the days' remaining events were won by scouts from Zwangzug, with another coming second in the high jump. This followed on from a local one-two performance in the car racing event. Car racing!

Okay, maybe that shouldn't have been a surprise--"of course I was going fast, the faster I finished the faster I could get out of this thing," runner-up Jason Spack admitted, "and the less time it had to potentially crash." Less humble but similarly magnanimous statements were attributed to champion Heiki Aburesla.

But all the same, the octothon events at the very least should be cause for celebration.

Instead of bickering.

"These children are too young to be whirling around the world to who-knows-where!" complained Jillian McRore. "My Miron told me that the leaders had been reading the names all wrong and now even his diary was subject to some "retroactive continunity," whatever that means! If even your identity can't be trusted, the world of international sports is not safe for adults much less vulnerable children."

Some are concerned that the world of international sports is involved at all. "Sure, Scouts can have their single-sex organization," says Melanie Ruseham, "that's all right. But when they start winning at these track and field events...doesn't that defeat the purpose of the integration we've worked for? I mean, what happens when the young women grow up and want to be Olympic decathletes, only to find that the world isn't ready for them?"

When asked to comment on the scouts' identity as athletes, long jump champion Sarah Shermonds tangentially digressed on an apparent "game of ball" played between "the bedbugs and the skeeters," featuring a home run in a late rally by the latter.

At the ScoutSport international jamboree in Gidney on far-off Council Island, 14-year-old Parisa Sherazi of Khanuj ran an unofficial women's national record time of 11.06 in the 100 metres event. Her remarkable performance came in the fifth of six days of sporting events culminating in the presentation of the B-P Cup for excellence in Scouting and sport. Thousands of Scouts from countries around the world are in attendance, with 168 participating in this all-rounder challenge.

"Parisa's worked hard all week for us," said 16-year-old patrol leader Iris Garland from Astoria. "She pitched in on the car we built for the gravity race, ran hard through navigation issues in the map and compass course, and has soft hands catching flying discs."

The Euterpe Isles entry, inelegantly known as the Frog patrol (you should hear their patrol croak yell), is a team of eight Scouts from across the country. Their best performance of the week before Sherazi's run was in the compass race, where three of the eight teammates finished in the top 20 and the patrol placed fourth by less than 15 seconds.

Serravalle's Santino Roncalli expressed his hope that some of their new friends might come to the Euterpe Isles Open Championships in Serravalle next year. "I don't know if they play sports we'll be offering, but there are some great athletes and great people out there." The first biennial Open Championships, conceived in the National Sporting Initiative Act 1972, will feature the six sports promoted through that federal initiative: Chess, curling, cycling, gymnastics, volleyball, and wrestling. The Open is the counterpart of the National Championships first run in 1975 and continuing in annual alternation with the Open.

As for Sherazi getting a chance to improve on that time, don't worry. "I've met lots of people this week," she explained. "And they're heading off to lots of schools some day."
RP population 665,900,000; area 1,367,297 km2.
Comparison: Double USA population in the land area of South Africa.

You know, it's funny. I always planned on going to college, and I guess I figured one day, as soon as my NWRT scores or whatever got out, I'd start getting a bunch of e-mails from random places about how great their school was. My older cousins tell me it's worse, that they had to deal with a lot more paper mail.

And now...

Well. I still have no idea who figured out that our troops were the right size/age/whatever for this, but clearly they knew what they were doing. I was "off" today and while the rest of us weren't quite as impressive as they had been yesterday, we still finished first overall to jack-stomp in the final standings. Miron won his pole vault thing, so their troop was second in the overall thing.

We're heading back to the airport soon. Heiki was hilarious, we were just teasing her about "do you want to keep the car as a souvenir, how are we going to fit it on the plane, blah blah blah," and she's just like "it'd fall apart any minute I touch it again--you know, the car, not the plane," and so then Elaine was saying definitely for a bonus challenge we should make a car that can turn into a boat and get someone back home. Or maybe just to one of the mainlands here.

I'd forgotten how many kids were here, not just us competing, it really does make me feel lucky to have gotten here at all (and the winning part too). After something like that, well, who knows? I think a lot more of us want to be athletes someday, as in, think we can actually pull it off. Not running cross-country in high school, or even playing baseball in college, but doing something really cool, going abroad again. But that would take a lot of luck, not only on our part in the events, but making sure everything falls into place.

Until then, "make new friends but keep the old/one is silver and the other gold." As in, like, Olympic medals.
