ScoutSport: A Scouting Jamboree
Welcome to Gidney!

Welcome to the Francis Gidney Memorial Scout Reservation! We hope you enjoy your stay here on Council Island, a neutral land established by a compact of over 20 nations as a nature preserve and outdoor adventure site. Over the course of six competition days Scout patrols from across the globe will test their mettle in five unique events, with the B-P Cup to be presented to the patrol that best exemplifies all-around excellence.

Patrol registration

In order to register the participation of your nation's Scouts, we ask that you provide the following information for each of the eight Scouts in your patrol:

Scout Name, Individual Attributes, Octothon Speciality.

• Each Scout's Individual Attributes form a five-digit number, each digit a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, with their sum being 10 points. The first digit marks Agility, followed by Smarts, Spirit, Strength, and Vigor in that order.
  
• The 10 Octothon Specialities are 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 110 metres hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500 metres. Each Scout in your patrol must declare a different speciality; two events will be omitted.

Also, for the patrol as a whole please list your patrol name and name one Scout as patrol leader and one Scout as the Gravity Derby driver. (These may be the same person.)

Capacity limitations

You may send up to four patrols. Each patrol must be comprised of Scouts from the same country. A country may have more than one patrol, but total entry from a single source may not exceed four patrols (one troop).

Schedule

The ScoutSport events take place on six consecutive days IC. But in order to provide more time to consider RPs the scorinations will take place on (almost) alternating days and take up closer to two weeks.

Day One (Diskapalooza pool play): Tuesday, November 27.
Day Two (Diskapalooza knockouts; Gravity Derby kits issued): Thursday, November 29.
Day Three (Compass Race; Tug of War pool play): Saturday, December 1.
Day Four (Tug of War knockouts; Gravity Derby safety inspections): Tuesday, December 4.
Day Five (Gravity Derby; Octothon first half (100, LJ, SP, HJ, 400)): Thursday, December 6.
Day Six (Octothon second half (110H, DT, PV, JT, 1500); B-P Cup presentation): Saturday, December 8.

Diskapalooza is an ultimate Frisbee tournament, with round-robin pool play on day one followed by knockout play for up to eight patrols on day two.

Gravity Derby is a set of downhill races between unpowered cars built by the Scouts from kits provided on the morning of day two. Cars are inspected on the evening of day four, and the races take place on day five with one Scout from the patrol selected to drive. The sum of the three best times from four races determines the winner.

Compass Race is a cross-country race requiring the use of map and compass to determine the proper course. It is run on the morning of day three before the pool matches in Tug of War. The sum of the patrol's five best times determines the winner.

Tug of War is just what it sounds like, organized on days three and four like the Diskapalooza on days one and two.

Octothon, run on days five and six, splits the patrol into eight individual Scouts. Each Scout contests their choice of one of the ten events of the track and field decathlon, and the patrol's score is the sum of all decathlon points earned in the eight events attempted. No two Scouts in a patrol may compete in the same event!

Scoring and scorination

The top 13 patrols in each tournament receive points, with 100 to first place, 87 to second, 75 to third, then 64, 54, 45, 37, 30, 24, 19, 15, 12, and 10 for succeeding places. The B-P Cup goes to the patrol with the most points across five events.

Scorination will be accomplished using existing xkoranate files:

• Diskapalooza--Ultimate
• Gravity Derby--Swimming-women's 50 m freestyle-heats (times 25-30 seconds)
• Compass Race--Cross country skiing-women's pursuit 15 km (times 40-50 minutes)
• Tug of War--Judo
• Octothon--All men's decathlon events

Scorination times are expected to be between 1200 and 1400 UTC each day (6:00-8:00 am US Central time).

[Waltzing Matilda]

The land of Waltzing Matilda, just across the water from Council Island, is represented by many Scouts at ScoutSport. [Green Jello Salad]

The Seagulls of the 23rd Bountiful Scout Group will represent Green Jello Salad in the competitions at the upcoming ScoutSport jamboree on Council Island. Nations from around the world are expected to attend, with early confirmations received from lands as far off as Mystria and Atlantian Oceania as well as from near neighbors.

Sixteen-year-old King's Scout Aaron Poe leads the Seagulls, with the other seven boys in the patrol ranging in age from 12-year-old tech wizard Steve Sweet to 17-year-old Super 20 rugby league selectee Cooper Mills. The boys will compete in athletics, orienteering, tug-of-war, ultimate Frisbee, and a gravity derby using cars built from kits on site.

The enterprising boys from Bashtun's Youth Police Academy are eager to show these scouts a thing or two about athleticism and teamwork. The squad being sent to compete is representing the Second Platoon of the downtown branch, codenamed "The Wildflouers."

The patrol representing The Babbage Islands in the B-P Cup at ScoutSport is called the Snowy Owls after the Babbage national animal. The eight scouts range in age from 13 to 17 and hail from different units in the Kopavogur, Gibson area.

In Babbage Scouting there are four basic sections, plus three speciality programmes open to older Scouts and Explorers.

Boys and girls age 6 but not yet 11 may become Cubs and join a Cub pack.
Boys and girls age 10 but not yet 15 may become Scouts and join a Scout troop.
Boys and girls age 14 but not yet 19 may become Explorers and join an Explorer crew.
Young men and women age 17 but not yet 26 may become Rovers and join a Rover group.
Sea Scout ships, Aero-Scout flights, and Space Scout kosmoŝipoj admit 12-13 year olds as junior members and 14-18 year olds as full members.

Babbage Scouting is coeducational on the national level. However, licenced partners may elect to operate single-sex units at one or more levels in their sole discretion. (Also permitted, but not required, are parallel units for boys and girls in a given section.) Single-sex units are more common in the two younger sections but are in a minority at every level.

[Bear Scout Association]

The patrol representing the Bear Scout Association (of Bears Armed) in the B-P Cup at ScoutSport is ‘Emerald Piglet’ patrol of the 5th PassPort Boar Scout Troop (Blessed Ursiosopher’s)… and comes, as the troop’s name suggests, from the city of PassPort.
The BSA was founded in 1871AD, by Lord Rubert Barrden-Pale who had written a book called ‘Scouting for Cubs’ whilst commanding the besieged garrison at Marrfehk-Ing during the Second Boorkh War. Membership is open to both he-cubs and she-cubs, and members are divided between three sub-organisations depending on maturity: Generally speaking ‘Cub Scout’ troops have members aged between four and eight-plus-four, ‘Bear Scout’ troops have members aged between eight and twoEights, and ‘Tiger Scouts’ — who may be grouped into either troops or ‘free patrols’, or even operate in association with Bear Scout troops, depending on how many of them there are in the area concerned — are aged between eight-plus-four and twoEights-plus-four. There is an associated ‘Sea Scouts’ organisation, but that has branches only in the Northlands rather than in the Mainland as well.
Cub Scout troops are normally mixed-sex, Bear Scout troops are normally single-sex with a pair of linked groups (one of ‘Boar Scouts’ for males and one of ‘Sow Scouts’ for females) sharing a catchment area so that no candidates are barred from access due to gender (and with very similar, if not identical, training programmes) if there are enough scouts and leaders in that area for this to be feasible, and Tiger Scout groups are divided about 40:40 between mixed-sex ones & single-sex pairs. Troops and groups may be affiliated with particular religions and places of worship, and many of them are, but must make reasonable allowances for any persons with differing beliefs who choose to join them anyhows. It is against the rules for troops to reject any candidates on the basis of either species or Clan membership, but in some cases where members of two or more sapient species co-exist in the same area they may choose to have troops that are effectively segregated so that the scouts in each are associating mainly with other scouts of roughly comparable physical abilities.


5th PassPort Boar Scouts (Blessed Ursiosopher’s)
PassPort is one of the few ‘free cities’ that don’t lie within any specific Clans’ jurisdictions, and consequently has a more mixed population than do most other parts of the country. That fact is reflected in this troop’s membership and, unusually, even in the membership of its constituent patrols which have deliberately been organised on a cross-Clan basis rather than allowed to form in a more segregated way. It is more homogenous as far as religion is concerned, however, with almost all of its members belonging to the Ursion faith and — as its name indicates — with formal affiliation to a local temple that is dedicated to [a saint who is known as] the Blessed Ursioiopher. They are also affiliated with the local garrison’s contingent of the Confederal Engineers, who provide some instruction and thus make it possible for this troop — alone amongst those of its district — to offer access to proficiency badges in ‘Field Demolitions’… As the use of the term ‘Boar’ in its name indicates, this is an all-male troop, and consequently all of its entrants in this competition are male.

The Vegai reporter quickly scans over the index cards in his left hand before looking up to smile at the camera.

“Welcome to the Francis Gidney Memorial Scout Reservation here on Council Island where 168 scouts representing 21 troops from 16 nations will be competing to win the inaugural ScoutSport: Youth Jamboree. This event looks to showcase some of the finest skills from the best scouts in the NSverse. Some may claim to have better scouts but don’t believe that for a second. If they were that good, they would be here to prove it.”

The camera pans across several groups of scouts already engaged in the Diskapalooza event.

“Platypus Scouts from Waltzing Matilda. Cockatiel Scouts from Lymantatia. Youth Police from Karditan. Sea Scouts from Undisputed Atols. Bear Scouts from Bears Armed. Our very own Dragon Scouts. These are but some of the scout types represented. The types vary wildly yet each holds dear the same core scout values which bring them all together in true sporting harmony - except maybe the Youth Police… not quite sure about those guys.

As the first day’s events wind down, it looks as if the Dragon Scouts have proved to be quite good in the Diskapalooza event where the Coatl Patrol from Katchgar, Meldinburg has cruised to a brilliant 5-1 record to lead pool 1 and have become the second ranked qualifier. Wyvern Patrol from Sciajisse, ASMV and Eld Wyrm Patrol from Northshore, Carrington both finished 4-2 Qualifying 5th and 6th respectively. Coatl will face the Seagulls of Green Jello Salad on Day Two while Wyvern faces Nilveneu of Northern Sunrise Islands and Eld Wyrm takes on Green Piglet of the Bear Scout Association.

Day two will also be when the Derby Kits are issued and we might just get a sneak peak at what our troops are hoping to create. See ya next time.”
