Welcome to the Licentian Sport Newswires. Here, you will find results for the big leagues on the Islands (basically, whichever ones I get round to on a regular basis):

Football (Licentian Premier League, Licentian Second Division)
Rugby Union (Super Sixteen)

May I kindly request that anyone who isn't me or Apox (if he chooses to post Super Sixteen results here) refrains from posting here, and instead sends me a telegram with any questions you may have.

Licentian Football Pyramid

Season Five

After the turmoil of the last year or two in the Islands, the Licentian leagues are back to normal in an attempt to raise morale amongst the people after a tumultuous couple of seasons. And as if our fairly short seasons didn’t offer enough excitement, the RLFA has officially announced a relegation playoff game at the end of the season, between the eleventh placed Premier League and the second placed Second Division. The winner of the game will earn the twelfth spot in the next Premier League season.

Now, to the meat of my preview. Transfers, and my actual predictions on who will finish where this season.

Transfers:

IN:

Rune Oramo – 24 – ST – Polarian – To SC Montfort:
Oramo comes from the cold islands in the north of Rushmore as part of the deal that sees both Logan Moran and Nathan Gardiner-Stewart (NGS taking on a coaching role) move up north to Northbrook Diamonds. In Oramo, SC have got themselves a young man who is almost certain to lead them back to the title that they lost to Farnworth, and keep themselves in that spot for a long time.

Lijenost Klinicki – 24 – ST – Mytanar – To AFC Farnworth:
Farnworth aren’t just happy with one star striker, in Drew Martin. The backing of a consortium that covers everybody who’s anybody in the town has given the club the money to pick up Klinicki, who was declared by Farnworth fans to be “the future of the club”. How someone from that hooligan land can lead our defending champions to a title, I don’t know...

Bela Ceh – 28 – ST – Free South Califan – To AFC Farnworth:
I’ll probably feel a bit of déjà vu after saying this, but Farnworth aren’t just happy with one star striker. Now, they feel the need to sign another striker, this time, an international star player in Bela Ceh, who has led his nation from the front for a while now. This will be a scary three-man-front for Farnworth this season, and it will take some stopping, especially amongst the lower level clubs.

Mirko Tasecchi – 23 – CM – Mytanar – To Montfort Wanderers:
Another bloody Mytanar. Great. Just great. Tasecchi is heading to the white side of Montfort, where it is hoped he will boss the midfield of a team with a midfield that needs somebody to boss it. Tom Lucan is hoping to add some flair to the middle of the park. I don’t quite understand why he needed to go to Rushmore for that...

OUT:

Logan Moran – 27 – ST - To Northbrook Diamonds (PIS):
Moran followed his former national team boss, Nathan Gardiner-Stewart, to the frozen tundra of the north in the hope that Kelly Sporadic would bring him into the national team before Jack Kerr’s retirement. That didn’t work, but he’s now playing for a team that will give him a real shout of going into the next World Cup as starter, ahead of Drew Martin, or possibly Tyler Henderson.

Luca Mackay – 21 – CM – To 1896 Ebor (MYT):
It’s clear that our entire nation wanted rid of this guy. The threat he caused to our national team was inexcusable, and we don’t want him on the Islands anymore. It would make sense that he would go to Mytannion. He’ll fit right in.

Prediction

Well, this is the challenging part of my article. I’m no genius, and I’ll probably not only biased, but wrong with this, but hey ho.

Top Four:

1/ SC Montfort
2/ Montfort Wanderers
3/ AFC Farnworth
4/ Abingdon Celtic

Sorry you Reds fans out there, but I don’t see you lot continuing your run this year. SC are too hungry to let this one go. Not only that, but if rumours are correct, and Lucan plans to leave the Wanderers and retire after this season, his boys will not want to let him down and not get the title. It’ll be a battle between the two Montfort clubs, and the Blues will have this one in hand. AFC will have a Globe Cup spot easily, with Celtic missing NSG and Skip Sanders, but still playing well enough to get the last Globe Cup spot.

Middle Four:

5/ Colesham Athletic
6/ Carrington United
7/ Houghton Rangers
8/ Glenmount Town

No surprise that these guys are in the middle ground. Colesham and Carrington, former Globe Cup contenders, now must be contented with sitting below the international spots, at least until co-efficients run high enough for another UICA place. Houghton and Glenmount don’t have much hope of getting into that kind of position, and in fact, should be grateful that they aren’t in the relegation dogfight.

Bottom Four:

9/ Rivermouth
10/ Garton County
11/ St Thomas’ Cove
12/ Marley Town

Improvement time for Rivermouth, as they climb out of the bottom two for the first time in my memory, just in time to avoid that dreaded relegation playoff. I expect that St Thomas’ Cove will manage to survive, just. Unless a good team faces them in the relegation playoff. Then they are fecked.

Second Division:

1/ Gaels
2/ St Bart’s
3/ Old Corinthians
4/ Montfort University
5/ Houghton Young Boys
6/ AC Carrington
7/ RSC Marley
8/ Pine AFC
9/ Christ Church
10/ Garton Bay Pirates

Gaels will be happy to get their immediate return to the Premier League, even without their traitorous star Luca “Dickhead” Mackay. St Bart’s will give St Thomas’ Cove some trouble in the Battle of the Islands, which this time around will likely be the relegation playoff. Corinthians and Montfort University, the two university-based teams on the Islands, will likely round out the UICA spots, with Young Boys going fairly close.

Well, those are my predictions. Enjoy the season, and have some good fun out there.

St Thomas’ Cove got a warm welcome to the Premier League, losing 4-0 to SC Montfort, who were led to victory by a Rune Oramo hattrick, leaving SC fans confident of a good season ahead. In other games, Carrington defeated Garton, putting home five to deliver a crushing defeat to the Boys of the Bay. In the Super Sunday game, Lucan’s Wanderers could count themselves lucky to have Guillermo di Luca, after a brace of assists helped them back from a one-nil deficit at Celtic.

12 St Thomas' Cove 2 0 0 2 0 6 −6 0

Montfort Wanderers are the only side yet to drop a point in the league, holding up against a late onslaught for Rivermouth to win out three-two, thanks to goals from Knight (2) and Tasecchi. Lewis Slater saved his own behind at home to Glenmount, scoring a last minute goal to equalise after he put the ball into his own net after ten minutes. This week’s Super Sunday game saw controversy, as SC were denied a winning goal, and the services of Edward Polonit for next week’s games, after he elbowed Tim Groenwald in the lead up to his headed goal.

Two nine goal thrillers caught the attention of the Islands this weekend. First, Celtic and St Thomas’ Cove played a back-and-forth, end to end game, that saw Celtic behind until Mick Rodgers, recently having signed a new contract, scored the ninth goal of the game to put Abingdon ahead, and give them their first win of the season. The Super Sunday game saw Lucan’s Wanderers destroy a weak Carrington defence, with both Knight and di Luca sending home hattricks for the league leaders.

The Second Division kicked off its own season this weekend, with teams ready to fight for the two possible spots in the Premier League. Old Corinthians striker Marlon Vetta scored two to give his side a convincing victory at AC Carrington, while Pine and Gaels played to a 3-3 draw, with a last minute free kick from Jamie Simpson saving Gaels from a humiliation at the Coliseum.

Early in the season as it is, this may be the weekend that Montfort Wanderers really laid claim to the LPL title. In a tough Super Sunday clash with title holders AFC Farnworth, the skilful play of Guillermo di Luca saw the Whites dominant for 90 minutes, even if they only had one goal, coming from a goal of the season solo run from di Luca. In another game, Luke Thompson’s Colesham Athletic side lost their second game of the season, this time to LPL new boys St Thomas’ Cove, extending their run without a win to four, and lighting a fire beneath the former Cyan-and-Gold manager’s dugout.

Meanwhile, one of the best games of the season so far saw the Scholars of Montfort University lose out in a close game against St Bart’s, Theo Wilson scoring two to give the Islanders their first points of the season. Elsewhere in the Second Division, top club Young Boys took a simple three-nil win over the bottom dwelling Pirates, with Edward Bruce looking in his best form for a long time in goal for Houghton.

Just when you thought Lucan’s Lads were going to take the title, along come Glenmount Town. Hugo Gordon, who played his youth football with the Wanderers Academy, put a simple poacher’s goal past Wanderers ‘keeper Max Hill to treat his former club to their first loss of the season. Meanwhile, Farnworth’s formidable front line proved themselves to not be the dysfunctional group we originally thought, with both Drew Martin and Bela Ceh picking up goals as the side took down an SC side that don’t look as good for the title as they did earlier in the season.

In the Second Division, the two top teams on paper, Gaels and St Bart’s, played to a two-all draw at the Barrier Island Oval, with Kenzie Miller hitting a shot from his own half past Apoxian ‘keeper Jelawe Cox to equalise for Gaels. In other games, Young Boys managed to keep up their run of wins, dominating AC Carrington, while Old Corinthians had a Marlon Vetta goal to thank for their own run continuing through their game against RSC Marley.

I don’t think anybody expected Colesham to be pinned to the bottom of the table this season, especially Luke Thompson. After another loss, this time three-two against Houghton, Thompson has been left to fear for his job. The club needs players like Ben Miller to step up and play well as soon as possible if they fancy staying in the Premier League. In an exciting Super Sunday game, AFC Farnworth relied on an amazing performance from Califan striker Bela Ceh to win out against Celtic, with his strike delivering the Reds to second place in the table.

In what was possibly the biggest game of the weekend, the two top teams in the LPL, Old Corinthians and Houghton Young Boys, faced off in a clash that saw Marlon Vetta grab another goal for his tally, the one-nil victory putting Corinthians to the top of the table, and in the automatic promotion spot. Elsewhere, Gaels delivered an five-nil hammering to Garton Bay Pirates, still yet to get a win, with five different scorers, including Kenzie Miller, putting numbers on the scoreboard at the Coliseum.

Top versus bottom should have been an easy win, shouldn’t it ?? Not on Ben Miller’s watch it isn’t. His early goal gave Luke Thompson a lifeline, a chance of their first win of the season. Unfortunately, Guillermo di Luca wasn’t about to watch his team fall to the bottom dwellers. A curling free kick gave Montfort a deserved draw. In the Super Sunday game, a dominant SC side beat third place Marley Town through an Altzibar Salutregi strike, propelling themselves into fourth, and putting pressure on their opponents.

In the Second Division, the Scholarship Derby between Old Corinthians and Montfort University became the Marlon Vetta Show, with his two goals leading his club to their fifth straight win, and keeping them on top of the league. Christ Church, who have surprised many this season by getting to fifth place, picked up a two-nil win against the Pirates, with Rian Craig scoring both for the Colesham side, keeping them three points ahead of Gaels and St Bart’s.

Two shock losses saw the Montfort clubs reeling this weekend, with single goals seeing both the Whites and the Blues fall to what would usually be considered inferior teams. Garton County, now sat in third, took away a one-nil win from LTI Stadium, with a Lawrence Bell goal putting a free kick past Max Hill to give County the win. Ben Miller led his Colesham squad to win for the first time this season against international stars SC, who have lost Edward Polonit until midseason because of a hamstring injury.

Old Corinthians got a close win at the Coliseum of the Gaels, Marlon Vetta, who has established himself as one of the top strikers in the Licentian leagues, scoring his best goal of the season with an absolute cracker to keep his side top. Meanwhile, AC Carrington finally begun to find their form, picking up only the second win of the season, with a shock win away to surprise package Christ Church, with a Rian Craig own goal costing the Choirboys the win.

Luke Thompson has lit a fire beneath his boys at Colesham Athletic, that’s for sure. Another big team that they’ve won against, this time four-three against Celtic, with Ben Miller getting a great hattrick to inspire another win for his boyhood club. In the Super Sunday game, it was a goal fest for the Farnworth front line, with Drew Martin, Bela Ceh and Lijenost Klinicki all putting goals past St Thomas’ Cove to cement their spot in second place, and make them genuine challengers to Montfort’s title run.

In the Second Division, Corinthians continued their seven game winning streak this season, against cross-city rivals Christ Church, with Marlon Vetta managing to continue his own streak of goal-scoring games. Young Boys managed an excellent win against Montfort University, despite the fact they managed to let the Scholars put two past them.

AFC Farnworth have stumbled in the race to the title, shocked by a Hugo Gordon goal, and losing to a Glenmount Town side that seems to be gaining an appetite for shocks, and interfering in the business of those in the title race. As the Premier League table really begins to look like it should, SC managed to propel themselves into third despite Rune Oramo’s goal being cancelled out after Cameron Ritchie mishandled a Roman Bell strike, leaving them with a one-all draw at home to Houghton.

In a game that could quite easily define the Second Division title race, the Pride of the Barrier Islands managed to hold Corinthians to their first dropped points of the season. It was no surprise Marlon Vetta packed in both goals for Corinthians, leading to rumours that SC will sign him during the mid-season break. However, the draw didn’t hurt Corinthians too badly, after Gaels thrashed Houghton by three goals to nil, allowing the club to stay four points ahead in the race for promotion.

In what had been dubbed “Derby Weekend” by the press, the first half of the season came to an end with big games in three of the four parishes of the Islands. Houghton managed to pull off a great win against their big brother, so to speak, in Celtic, with Alex Duncan heading home for the home side. Meanwhile, in a fiery Super Sunday clash, the Montfort Derby ended nil-nil with only 18 men on the pitch, after Cam Ritchie and Hyland Alonso of SC, and Mirko Tasecchi, the alleged instigator, and Emmanuel Christie of Wanderers were sent off in a brawl in the tunnel at halftime.

Who do you expect a dominant title-race leading side to lose their first game of the season against ?? Certainly not the bottom dwellers in Garton Bay Pirates. The Pirates picked up their first points, and only their third goal, of the season against Corinthians, with Alex MacDonald bundling home the ball in a goalmouth scramble to shake up the promotion race. Elsewhere, Young Boys put themselves in good position to strike after the mid-season break, Iain Brown scoring both goals for Houghton as they took down Christ Church in a classic of a game.

And we’re back from the mid-season break, with some excellent football action coming back to the Islands. AFC Farnworth kept the pressure on Wanderers, taking down Luke Thompson’s Colesham Athletic side through a single Lijenost Klinicki goal. Then, in the Super Sunday game, Celtic gave Wanderers exactly what they didn’t need after AFC’s win, with Mick Rodgers propelling the Green-Gold to a victory against the table-toppers, leaving Lucan under no illusions as to his side’s security at the top of the table.

The Second Division also returned from the break, and guess who scored for Corinthians in their one-nil win against AC ?? I bet you guessed right. Apoxian Marlon Vetta didn’t lose any of his goalscoring momentum over the break, despite rumours of his move to Montfort not coming to fruition. Meanwhile, St Bart’s stepped up in their quest to gain promotion, defeating fellow contenders Houghton Young Boys through a Gabe Paterson goal, putting St Bart’s in the playoff spot ahead of Young Boys.

Montfort Wanderers have re-established themselves at the top of the table after last week’s loss to Celtic. Mirko Tasecchi returned from his ban with a cracking free kick to give Wanderers a much needed win. However, AFC Farnworth managed to keep the pressure on Lucan’s Lads, with the Reds counting on Bela Ceh to take home a one-nil win at Garton County, with the Califan thanking Paolo Naoumov after the game for the classic through ball that set up his goal.

Pine AFC, the club from a small hamlet in Abingdon Parish, has forced Corinthians to drop points for only the third time this season, with Gordon Hamilton hacking Marlon Vetta’s header off the line to trip up the Colesham side on their road to promotion. Meanwhile, Houghton Young Boy brought themselves to within two points of the table toppers, defeating Pirates by three goals to nil to keep the title race close.

Abingdon Celtic delivered a crushing loss to St Thomas’ Cove, who have been left 7 points adrift of Garton in eleventh with Jack Kerr getting a hattrick for the Green-Gold, meaning that Cove will need to think fast if they want to stay in the Premier League past their first season here. Meanwhile, Farnworth kept up the pressure on Montfort, with Lijenost Klinicki getting a hattrick to keep the Reds within one point of Lucan’s boys, with around two months to go in the Premier League.

The Royals have pulled off a shocker this weekend, with Corinthians taking a massive stumble in the title race, after Jacob Smith hit a cracking free kick to give Marley a shock victory over the league leaders. As if things couldn’t get any worse for Corinthians, Young Boys soundly beat AC Carrington by two goals to nil, to propel the Houghton side to the top of the table, and blow the promotion race wide open.

In the match that could decide the title race, on a massive Super Sunday, AFC Farnworth pulled it out of the bag against Lucan’s Wanderers, destroying a weak defence, with Ceh, Martin and Parkinson all getting goals for the Reds in a three-one win that has left them sitting pretty atop the table. In other games, Rivermouth managed to pull themselves ever closer to a UICA place, beating Celtic by two goals to nil through a Luke Anderson brace, meaning that a team previously lucky to avoid relegation could be out in international games next season.

In the Second Division, the two top teams also faced off. This time, Young Boys managed a narrow one–nil victory over Corinthians to push their opponents into third, and extend their lead at the top of the table to three points. The team that took second place, St Bart’s, gained that spot through a two-nil victory at home to faltering Christ Church, with St Bart’s’ promotion hopes now on the up-and-up as they occupy that playoff spot.

AFC Farnworth have claimed another major scalp, and it is beginning to look like they will run away with this title in the last few weeks. This time, Drew Martin was the member of the Farnworth front three who claimed a goal, as they eased out a one-nil win over a struggling SC side, who are hanging just over the playoff spot. Glenmount Town have piled yet more misery on Wanderers, with a 4-2 win over Lucan’s Lads leaving Wanderers fans to ponder what went wrong for this team, who looked so promising earlier in the season.

Corinthians have finally returned to winning ways this weekend, with Marlon Vetta scoring a hattrick as they dominated Montfort University on the road, and tightening the gap between first and third to one point. It didn’t help the leaders that the Royals, who seem intent on shaking up the promotion race without really getting involved, shocked Young Boys four-two on their home ground, allowing the title race to close right back up again.

Heads will roll at SC Montfort if things don’t improve for the former champions. Despite an all-star ensemble, they lost to Glenount Town by one goal to nil this week, meaning that they are within two points of falling into the relegation playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Reds needed a last minute Paolo Naoumov goal to salvage a draw against Celtic, meaning that teams had a chance to get closer to AFC at the top of the table, though nobody managed to capitalise.

As if the Second Division hadn’t given us enough heart attacks already in this late point of the season, the leader at the top of the table has changed again. This time, St Bart’s used their opportunity against last placed Pirates, with stellar performances all around to win three-nil, to capitalise on Houghton being held to a bore draw by Pine, meaning that the promotion race is likely to continue until the final day.

Farnworth extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points, with Bela Ceh scoring two, one of which being a penalty, in their win against Rivermouth, leading many to believe that AFC have this title in the bag going into the final four weeks of the season. Carrington, who have slowly but surely edged themselves into a UICA position, thrashed St Thomas’ Cove by five goals to one, meaning that the island club will be relegated next week if Garton get even a single point.

It was a week of draws in the Second Division this week, but St Bart’s could claim themselves to be one of the only teams to win, with a Roddy Mackenzie free kick giving St Bart’s a three point advantage at the top going into the last two weeks in the Second Division. Old Corinthians were one of the teams in a draw, with a last minute Reegan Morrison goal cancelling out Marlon Vetta’s strike, and salvaging a point for Christ Church.

St Thomas’ Cove will return to Second Division action next season, only a year after being promoted. A four-two hammering from Rangers has sent the Islanders down with only two wins all season, and having conceded forty-eight times, making them the weakest defence in Licentian football. Montfort Wanderers have Guillermo di Luca to thank for a two-one win against struggling Garton County, after the NSIan scored one and set up the other to keep Wanderers in touch with the title. However, Farnworth only need a draw next week to confirm their third straight title.

Houghton Young Boys have cost themselves promotion with their late fall from grace, after they lost two-one to Gaels, leaving them unable to get into the top two spots with one game to go in the Second Division. The two teams that have a chance at promotion are St Bart’s and Old Corinthians. Corinthians will take the momentum into the final day, after defeating their title rivals by four goals to two, meaning that the battle for automatic promotion goes to the final day.

AFC Farnworth can now really call themselves the top club in Licentian football. A simple, comfortable victory, on the road to already relegated St Thomas’ Cove, has seen this star-studded team take their third straight title, and head off to the Champion’s Cup once more. The Premier League participants in the relegation play-off were also confirmed this weekend, with Garton County’s one-nil loss to SC Montfort meaning that they will have to fight for their own spot in the Premier League. Now, only the final UICA places can be decided as we head into the final two weeks of the season.

The Second Division title was also decided this weekend, with Old Corinthians emphatically beating perennial bottom-dwellers Garton Bay Pirates four-nil, thanks to a Marlon Vetta hattrick, to confirm their spot in the Premier League next season. St Bart’s were winning up until the fifth minute of added time, when Kieron Millar punched the ball home for Marley to break Islander hearts, and force St Bart’s to play in the relegation playoff at LTI Stadium against Garton County to see if they could face the Premier League next season, or whether they would have to wait another year.

What a turnaround for Colesham Athletic. After propping up the table for most of the season, they thrashed Rivermouth by six goals to nil to confirm their return to Globe Cup football this season, the second team to confirm their international participation next year. Carrington and Montfort will both have to wait for the final week to get their confirmation, both being held nil-nil by Marley and St Thomas’ Cove respectively. Celtic are still in with a shot of qualification, after a Tim Groenwald penalty save early on inspired their two-one win against Garton.

Carrington United confirmed their UICA participation for next season after a hard-fought win in the Battle of Colesham Parish, one-nil over their perennial rivals Athletic. The Montfort Derby was a rather mild affair following the riot after the first match of this season between the two, with Wanderers holding onto fourth place following a nil-nil draw with tenth-placed SC. Celtic were unable to qualify for the Globe Cup, but Jack Kerr got an emotional standing ovation at Gardiner-Stewart Park, his retirement party spoiled by Rangers. Nonetheless, the legend retired with the fans entirely behind him at Celtic, though the club will have to rebuild having lost their Big Three of Gardiner-Stewart, Sanders and Kerr in the last few seasons.

Relegation Playoff:

Garton County 0–0 St Bart's (1–1 AET) (2–4 pen.)
A nerve-wracking penalty shootout was the only way to decide which of these two teams would play in the Premier League next season, and who would be fighting for promotion in the Second Division. Jelawe Cox only let two penalties past him in the shootout, and Lorenzo Craig buried the penalty that saw St Bart’s return to the Premier League after two seasons of absence.

International Qualification:

Licentian qualifiers to UICA competitions are:

Champion’s Cup: AFC Farnworth
Globe Cup: Carrington United, Colesham Athletic, Montfort Wanderers
Series B Champion’s Cup: Old Corinthians, St Bart’s, Houghton Young Boys, Gaels

Cygnus Cup qualifier to appear at a later date.
This nation has now been reformed as the Licentian Isles. Please direct anything intended for me to that nation.

Licentian Football Pyramid

Final Day of the Season

The most exciting day on the Licentian sporting calendar is upon us. It is the final day of the season in both the Premier League and the Second Division (since the RLFA coordinated the two dates), and there is still a lot to be decided. Let’s have a look at the tables, and see what has happened so far.

Licentian Premier League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 A.F.C. Farnworth 21 13 6 2 24 9 +15 45
2 SC Montfort 21 11 4 6 24 12 +12 37
3 Abingdon Celtic 21 11 4 6 24 19 +5 37
4 Montfort Wanderers 21 10 4 7 26 18 +8 34
5 Carrington United 21 11 1 9 23 21 +2 34
6 Colesham Athletic 21 9 4 8 27 23 +4 31
7 Glenmount Town 21 9 3 9 25 25 0 30
8 Rivermouth F.C. 21 7 5 9 21 24 −3 26
9 Houghton Rangers 21 8 2 11 22 28 −6 26
10 Old Corinthians 21 5 4 12 18 34 −16 19
11 Marley Town 21 3 9 9 15 23 −8 18
12 St Bart's 21 4 4 13 14 27 −13 16

There’s still a lot to be decided on the final day of the Licentian Premier League, but the team that will take the title isn’t. AFC Farnworth have yet again run away with the title, once again boring those of us who actually like a bit of variety in our lives. The Reds took their trophy back three weeks ago with a one-nil win at home to Carrington. One thing that is going down to the wire is the second Champion’s Cup spot, with two big clubs, starved of any real success in recent years, fighting for that spot, with both SC and Celtic fans rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of a place in the top competition in the world of club football.

The Licentian Globe Cup spots look pretty much tied up, with Montfort Wanderers and Carrington United looking likely to join whoever loses out in the battle for the Champion’s Cup. Luke Thompson’s Colesham Athletic side still have a chance to claim the third and final spot in the competition, if they win against local rivals Carrington, but there are no guarantees for the Latics. In the other big battle, the one to avoid relegation, there are three teams fighting it out for one spot in the Premier League next season. At least one of the promoted sides from last season (Old Corinthians and St Bart’s) will go down, while the other team in the dogfight is Marley Town, who hope to hold onto their Premier League status, that they have proudly held since the start of the league in this format.

Licentian Second Division Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Gaels 17 13 4 0 41 11 +30 43
2 Garton County 17 7 7 3 26 19 +7 28
3 AC Carrington 17 7 6 4 22 17 +5 27
4 Montfort University 17 7 5 5 19 16 +3 26
5 RSC Marley 17 6 6 5 16 16 0 24
6 Houghton Young Boys 17 5 6 6 11 15 −4 21
7 St Thomas' Cove 17 5 3 9 18 22 −4 18
8 Pine AFC 17 4 3 10 12 32 −20 15
9 Garton Bay Pirates 17 3 5 9 17 21 −4 14
10 Christ Church 17 2 7 8 14 27 −13 13

In the Licentian Second Division, there are only really two battles to watch for, since there is no established relegation from that league. In the fight for promotion, there is only one spot left to gain. Gaels have shown their dominance in the Second Division this season, having not lost a single game up to now, and having assured their promotion back to the Premier League after a two-year absence three weeks ago with an easy one-nil win at home to AC Carrington. The second place in the top league next season, however, is still wide open, with Montfort University, RSC Marley and Garton County all still in the hunt.

The other, less publicised race, is that for the four Series B Champion’s Cup places. There’s not much to watch in that one, with Gaels having already secured their place, and the rest being almost secure. The only change that could possibly happen would be AC Carrington possibly knocking one of the above mentioned three promotion hunters out of the race.

As It Happens

0 MINUTES: And we have kicked off all around the Licentian Islands. Luke Thompson has emerged to boos at Carrington, which he took graciously, as local rivals Colesham and Carrington face off to pretty much decide which side will go to the Globe Cup. Derby Day in Montfort as well, with SC desperate to win to secure their place in the Champion’s Cup next season, and the Wanderers are just looking to one-up their rivals. Marley Town will be hoping that Farnworth will let them walk their way out of their relegation spots, so that they can send Corinthians down.

1 MINUTES: It didn’t take long for Luke Thompson to be sticking his head in his hands yet again. Colesham are behind once again. Ethan Thomson managed to beat the Colesham defence almost straight from the kick-off, finding Danny Grant in free space for a simple finish, leaving Thompson to release his anger with a punch to his chair.

3 MINUTES: We have a goal in Abingdon from the Second Division game between Gaels and Montfort University. The currently undefeated champions are looking to extend their run and may just do it. Cody Hamilton converts a beautiful free kick to give his side a chance to get their record.

5 MINUTES: Things are getting worse for Colesham. Ethan Thomson has got a goal of his own now, a cracking header which is giving Carrington fans a lot to cheer about. Bookies are now taking bets on how many knuckles Luke Thompson is going to have broken by the final whistle.

6 MINUTES: Owen Hill can notch another goal to his tally, with Rivermouth taking a one-nil lead at home to St Bart’s, and the Islanders looking likely to be relegated straight back to the Second Division.

12 MINUTES: Celtic have taken the advantage in the race for the Champions’ Cup. Mick Rodgers found Duncan Hill with a beautiful cross, and the resulting header sent the home end at Gardiner-Stewart Stadium into a frenzy. No news on the reaction from SC.

16 MINUTES: Back to the Second Division now, where ninth-placed Garton Bay Pirates are looking to surprise St Thomas’ Cove. Frazer Aitken has bundled home in the middle of a goalmouth scramble to give the Pirates the lead.

20 MINUTES: Two goals in fairly quick succession to let you know about. The champions Farnworth have taken the lead at home to Marley through a Bela Ceh penalty, while Rivermouth have extended their lead against St Bart’s to two goals, with Owen Hill laying off Brendan Clark to leave them in a more secure position.

23 MINUTES: Another two goals. Firstly in the Premier League, Carrington have piled more hurt on Luke Thompson’s side, and look ever more likely to take their place in the Globe Cup, while relegating their rivals to a season without the competition. In the Second Division, Gaels fans are already unfurling their “Undefeated” banners, with Zachary Boyle beating the keeper from the edge of the box with a beautiful chip.

27 MINUTES: Every side in the relegation battle is currently losing after Old Corinthians went behind one-nil to Glenmount Town. Marlon Vetta, Corinthians’ top scorer, bungled a clearance, hitting teammate Nick Russell in the face, with the resulting deflection bobbling past the keeper, and leaving Russell and Vetta being pulled apart by teammates.

29 MINUTES: Another couple of goals coming in from around the Islands. Paolo Naoumov’s free kick has given Farnworth a two-nil lead. And there has been a big goal in the Second Division, with Garton County’s Lukasz Ross giving his squad a lead that could see them return to the Premier League.

32 MINUTES: And Farnworth now have a three goal cushion against struggling Marley. Drew Martin has headed home from a Tom Kennedy cross to pile yet more misery on soon-to-be relegated Marley Town.

34 MINUTES: The relegation dogfight has just been blown wide open once again. St Bart’s have pulled one back against Rivermouth, with Alfie Jamison mobbed by the Islanders fans, as they realise that this could be the catalyst for a last-minute push for safety. In the lower tier, Montfort University have pulled one back against Gaels, Ethan Bell getting the goal for the Scholars.

42 MINUTES: After a slow period for goals, Carrington have got a fourth goal to push the Latics even further down the hole. Ethan Thomson has got his second of the afternoon, with a driven shot from ten yards, and the United fans are shouting for five.

43 MINUTES: The Second Division has seen another goal, this time for St Thomas’ Cove. Lewis Anderson, an Academy player with the Pirates, has scored for Cove, before turning to the Bay End and showing his appreciation (or lack thereof) for his former club. He’s definitely going to get fined for that one.

45 MINUTES: Old Corinthians have been wounded just before the break at home to Glenmount Town, Rowan White, with a wonder strike from thirty yards to leave Corinthians fans depending on results elsewhere on the final day.

HALF TIME: We are at half time. A lot of exciting games going on right now, here are the scores at half time.

Premier League:

Old Corinthians 0-2 Glenmount Town
AFC Farnworth 3-0 Marley Town
Carrington United 4-0 Colesham Athletic
Rivermouth FC 2-1 St Bart’s
Abingdon Celtic 1-0 Houghton Rangers
SC Montfort 0-0 Montfort Wanderers

Second Division:

Pine AFC 0-0 AC Carrington
Garton Bay Pirates 1-1 St Thomas’ Cove
Garton County 1-0 RSC Marley
Christ Church 0-0 Houghton Young Boys
Gaels 2-1 Montfort University

45 MINUTES: And we are back underway all around the Islands.

51 MINUTES: It’s taken a little bit of time to see the first goal of the second half, and it has come from a relatively unexpected source. Marley Town have pulled one back against the champions, with Eoghan Macintyre pouncing on a fumble from the Farnworth keeper to give the Marley fans something to cheer about.

60 MINUTES: Marley Town are beginning to stage a comeback in Farnworth. Clark McDonald made a rare mistake in the Farnworth goal, charging out and bringing down Macintyre in the box. McDonald was sent for an early bath, and Macintyre duly converted the penalty to pull Town to within a goal.

62 MINUTES: The Carrington fans are looking like pigs in mud right now. It’s a fifth for United against their local rivals, and it is Ethan Thomson yet again. He now has his hattrick, and his name is likely to be engrained in Colesham brains for a long time to come.

65 MINUTES: Another couple of goals to inform you of. Glenmount Town have extended their lead against Corinthians to three, with Jake Donaldson claiming the goal after a chaotic piece of defending from a Town corner. In the Second Division, Gaels have reclaimed their two goal lead against the Scholars, Zach Boyle claiming his second goal of the afternoon.

67 MINUTES: It is not over yet for Old Corinthians. Marlon Vetta has scored to make up for his earlier mistake, a cracking shot that found the back of the net, with Vetta quickly taking the ball back to the halfway line in the hope of giving his team a chance to stay up. In a less significant game, Pine have taken the lead over AC Carrington through a Fraser Ross own goal.

70 MINUTES: Gaels have shown the dominance that they have asserted all season in the Second Division once again. They have scored a fourth against Montfort University, with Cyrus Munro poking home a crossed free kick from Zach Boyle.

79 MINUTES: This relegation battle has been blown wide open once again. St Bart’s have equalised against Rivermouth, Zac McIntosh getting the goal. St Bart’s fans now have to hope that they can get another goal to even have a chance to secure their place for next season.

87 MINUTES: Old Corinthians may just be going down today, with St Bart’s and Marley both on a run, and Corinthians having just conceded a fourth to Glenmount. Rowan White has got his second of the afternoon, with a simple strike from five yards leaving Old Corinthians praying for their spot in the Premier League.

89 MINUTES: Just to finish off a terrible afternoon for the Latics, Danny Grant has another goal for United, and Colesham fans have already deserted the ground. A painful loss for Athletic, made even worse by the fact they are now out of contention for the Globe Cup.

92 MINUTES: Things just got interesting in injury time in the race for the Champions’ Cup spot. Houghton Rangers have got a last minute equaliser against Celtic, who now have to rely on their perpetual rivals Wanderers to get a last minute goal to secure their place in the Champions’ Cup ahead of SC.

93 MINUTES: There’s been a goal from Adamson Park.... and it’s gone to SC !! Rune Oramo has headed home a last minute goal, to secure SC’s place in the Champions’ Cup next season. Absolutely unbelievable !! Whistles are going all over the nation, fates have been decided, and celebrations (and mournings) have finally started.

FULL TIME: Let’s have a look at the final scores of the final day of the season.

Premier League:

Old Corinthians 1–4 Glenmount Town

Super Sixteen Review

It's the second season of the multinational rugby competition held between two neighbours separated only by the Licentian Channel; Apox and the Licentian Islands. After a tough season for the majority of Licentian clubs in their debut seasons, will they pick up the pace and surprise us all ?? Or will it be the same as last season, with an Apoxian club taking the title ?? Let's take a look and find out !!

- Super Sixteen Pld W D L PF PA PD Pts
1 Colesham City Blues 30 19 3 8 310 208 +102 79 CHAMPIONS, SEASOGS
2 Dwile Jerseys 30 19 2 9 491 319 +172 78 SEASOGS
3 Gwinevra Saints 30 18 1 11 439 361 +78 73 SEASOGS
4 Northern Urbanista 30 17 3 10 329 224 +105 71 SEASOGS
5 JK Memorial Squad 30 16 5 9 481 397 +84 69 SEASOGS
6 Mandon Faithful 30 17 0 13 590 509 +81 68 SEASOGS
7 Islanders 30 15 2 13 479 408 +71 62
8 Mona Warriors 30 15 2 13 434 397 +37 62
9 Celtic Warriors 30 14 0 16 459 458 +1 56
10 Montfort Lions 30 13 2 15 438 442 −4 54
11 Hudd Trolls 30 13 1 16 418 464 −46 53
12 Oldem Academicals 30 11 2 17 355 413 −58 46
13 Barbury Exiles 30 11 1 18 303 456 −153 45
14 Carrington Devils 30 10 2 18 247 399 −152 42
15 Farnworth Rugby Club 30 9 2 19 352 514 −162 38
16 Southern Urbanista 30 8 2 20 439 595 −156 34

It is an incredible season for one Licentian club, even if the others were still rubbish. Colesham City Blues take the title ahead of Dwile Jerseys, but are the only Licentian club to claim a spot in the Seasogs; the aforementioned Dwile, Gwinevra Saints, Northern Urbanista, JK Memorial Squad and Mandon Faithful represent Apox. The bottom end Licentian clubs, Carrington and Farnworth, despite poor seasons, avoiding propping up the Super Sixteen table; that dubious honour is awarded to Apoxian side Southern Urbanista.

Qualifiers from Apox (APX): Dwile Jerseys, Gwinevra Saints, Northern Urbanista, JK Memorial Squad, Mandon Faithful

Qualifier from the Licentian Islands (LCN): Colesham City Blues

Super Sixteen Review

Before we look at the league results, we have a new competition to inform you of between the nations of Apox and The Licentian Isles. The Lockwood Cup has been initiated for the highest placing club from each of the top associations from the previous season to play a game to kick off the new season and decide which nation is the best (sort of). Named after George Lockwood, the most famous Apoxian rugby player, his fame nearing that of some footballers in Apox, who will be retiring at the end of the 4th season of the Super Sixteen. It will alternate between the two countries each season, with the cup being held in The Royal Stadium, Apox this year.

I: Colesham City Blues 7–0 Dwile Jerseys

Lockwood Cup I - held in the Royal Stadium, Apox
Colesham City Blues 7–0 Dwile Jerseys

Now moving to the third season of the Super Sixteen which has just finished, with yet more surprises for all involved, and new forces in rugby between the two nations rising to the fore. It was The Licentian Isles Islanders who won the title, meaning two Licentian teams have won the tournament in a row, following a late surge to win with a mammoth 90 points. This of course prompted much grumbling from the conservative elders of the Apoxian rugby world regarding Licentians not knowing there place etc etc etc, when in truth it is just that the Apoxian teams weren't good enough.

JK Memorial Squad also had a late surge to finish 2nd, maintaining their claim as the best Apoxian team around, despite not having won a title for 4 years, before the Super Sixteen had even been formed. Hudd Trolls and Dwile Jersey came next, the Trolls regaining their place in contention after a poor league showing last season. However, there were yet more surprises as Colesham City Blues and Celtic Warriors were in 5th and 6th position, meaning the Licentian Isles for the first time send the maximum number of clubs to Seasogs, though the Blues will be disappointed not to have won the a second title after leading for much of the season. Celtic Warriors just edged out Gwinevra Saints who will be disappointed by the lack of international competition, as will Northern Urbanista in 8th and Mandon Faithful in 11th.

However, it can only be good that the Licentian clubs are challenging for position now, as it will give the stagnating Apoxian rugby community the kick up the backside it needs to really improve, both domestically and internationally.
