DELACLAVA STAR

Delaclava had a bye today at the World Baseball Classic 13. In group action, Vephrall defeated Taeshan 5-4 and Delesa won the Battle of the Group 6 New Teams 9-7 over Seasonia.

However, what was being watched more was action over in group 4. Kenavt defeated Sibirsky 5-1 as Antarctistan had a bye. But the most important game was the Khalil Dennis-led Sarzonia surprising #2 Zwangzug with a 6-5 victory. Led by Hank Everly's three run homer and a solo shot by Skip Hale, the Delaclav pitcher and former assistant manager Dennis won his first WBC victory as a manager, as well as a shaving cream pie to the face. Asked by a reporter, he said he felt "great" about the win.

You're listening to WTB, AM 1450 in Zwischen. You don't have to be in Zwischen, of course. If it's late enough, and the sky is clear enough, the game can be heard as far away as south Nalchoy. Maybe farther. That's where Ben was from.

He'd thought about going to college in the capital, true--he had lived in the suburbs until he was six, and it would be a nice sort of homecoming--but ultimately StoalSci was too good to pass up. That's what he'd thought at first. That was--although he wasn't positive of the time dilation--nine months ago. By the time the thirteenth World Baseball Classic rolled around, he was having second thoughts. Yes, he loved his coursework, all the science he could dream of, but he'd turned down a more, well, well-rounded liberal arts thing. That was why the sign on the bulletin board caught his eye, that and the money he could make from the study and the chance to "study" abroad. But a public speaking opportunity? Maybe that would be the balance he needed. Maybe.

So he skimmed over the "potential risks"--mostly the chance that he'd be stuck permanently aging faster than almost everyone he knew--and signed up. Which is how Ben wound up in the Worm Hole press box, watching.

"Spacchi settles under it, and makes the catch. Two down for the Stars here in the ninth." Ben reached for his water bottle, silently thankful for the seventh inning stretch. They hadn't told him he'd be doing it all alone. Not that he minded working alone. Things usually went more smoothly. Just not for broadcasting. "And...oh! We've got a pinch-hitter. Uh, well, Sarzonia do anyway. It's...yeah. It's Skip Hale, the player-manager." That might have gone over people's heads. "Not...not actually, I mean, he's...just a pinch-hitter. Yeah."

"The pitch from Scripps, it's a fastball, low and inside, ball one. Hale is, let's see, seen as one of Sarzonia's best pinch-hitters, and he's batting for Fred Carlton who'd gone one for three." Was he supposed to pause and let the fans fill the air? It was hardly noise, just the nervous wait for the game to move along. "This one's swung on and missed. I don't know, it looked close."

"The sign from Minium, and the pitch, it's high. Two and one on Skip Hale, two outs in the top of the ninth, the bases empty for Sarzonia. Now, they haven't scored since the sixth, so it'll be interesting to see what happens if Hale gets on. I'm guessing it'd be..." They'd need to bring in a catcher. "Maybe Mario Salvidotti would bat for Tolliver. This one, though, is hit hard, deep to left. Spacchi backpedaling again, he's at the wall--it's out of here!"

There was little to get excited about in the bottom of the ninth. Irene grounded out to Spontanelli at shortstop, Sonia popped out to the mound, and Marvin struck out looking. Was it wrong, Ben wondered, not to root for your team, just so you could get the night over with?

The question, however, was soon replaced by one of more immediacy. "I don't have to go down and interview people, do I?"

X Island Inquirer

It seems the Purple Knights have come into their 10th Season with a Hangover from their first Semi-Final Appearance in 3 years, after two straight dissapointing seasons. The Number 4 team in the World the Knights came into the 13th World Baseball Classic with the word favorite once again marking the x on the back of their jersey and it seems that the Vephrall National team has hit that X in the center with a 5-4 victory. It is not the way the Knights wanted to get their 10th Season off with, but it may help them get back into it. Hopefully this can get them to realize that they need to get back to work as the thin line between great, and good gets even closer to being past in the wrong way by the Knights.

Knights ace Anthony Reilas opened his 10th consecutive opening night for the Knights and overall it was a great game for him on the mound, when he would leave in the 6th the game was tied 2-2 after a Socki Lewis home run and a Tadihito Shakiri Run in the 5th. In the seventh though Zack Lee Harper in his first action for the team would let a 3 run bomb over the outfielders head and he was credited with the loss, but the Knights still had time to come back and they took the best run at it as possible, but ultimately Alexander Parea's and Adam Meingens homers would not be enough, and for one of the few times in history the Knights lost at home in the land of the ice and snow.

Christina’s Space

It’s time to play international baseball once again! It is I, Christina Barrett, the Dagan team blogger once again. This is such a great event that everyone here looks forward too, and I bet this feeling is universal throughout the competition. When we played in this last year, we had a great group stage. Well, actually is was perfect-o. Then in the second round, we bottomed out and Yafor 2 took us out. Things like that happen in baseball, and on those days the Yaforites were the better team. For us, it provides with motivation to go further this time around, but right now we know that we need to take care of business in the group stage once again. It should be a great competition with many great teams involved and many new nations. Some of the new nations will be a Barnettsville and more will be one that we never hear from again. Then there are traditional powers with revamped lineups, such as Newmanistan to make things more interesting. I’m personally going to miss Brittany Wright on the Rockets. Man, that lady just defined base-stealing at its best. Everything you want in a leadoff hitter, she had, and she is someone that I look up too. I average 100 stolen bases a year at home, and the art of stealing bag is as much strategy as it is about speed. With her gone, I kind of look at myself now as the one who might just lead the World Baseball Classic in swiped bases. Now, that would be pretty cool. I don’t put myself above the team, but in a long process, the individual accolades are fun to keep track of.

I’m sure most of you that are reading my blog are aware the we won our opening game by the score of 9-1 over Albundania. It was pretty cool to put that kind of a beating on them and it gets us going in the right direction. We know that most people are predicting us and Quintessence of Dust to advance out of this group, but both of us still have to go out there and execute the gameplan. We did last night against Albundania as Meghan Corrigan tossed a complete game three-hitter, allowing just one solo home run in the seventh inning. She walked a pair, and struck out nine. Offensively, I was 2-for-5 with a single and a double, two stolen bases, and I scored twice. Being the leadoff batter, I don’t usually get a bunch of RBI’s. The RBI queen on the day was Katie Sheridan, who had four, thanks to going 3-for-5, and a triple short of the cycle. Jumping out to the 2-0 lead in the first, and then 5-0 by the end of three, we really felt as though we were back in the groove, just like we were last year.

There is still a lot of time, and we will need to continue to be in good form for the next game, which will be against the rival Quodites on the road. Rachel Andrews will start. Quintessence of Dust is always a nice place to visit, we have been there before. Cassadaigua-Quodite matchups have been pretty common too. It’s not an end-all, be-all game for us, but if we did get a win, it would really be super beneficial to us.

Our First Roster For Baseball in Awhile

The nation of Milchama is starting to think about baseball again. After a long time of international baseball in the shadows, the domestic game is as popular as ever, the Warriors are starting to get attention again. The Warriors have hired a new manager, Marcus Heshern, and are the MBA has decided to announce the roster for the first time in a long time (possibly since the last cup we cared, WBC 6). Now what does that mean that Milchama hasn't cared? It's quite simple really we won two straight cups and reached the semifinals every other time. It was quite obvious we were the best team on the planet. Therefore with that proven the Warriors stopped caring as much and their play suffered as a result. But now we're out to prove that we're back. The strategy begins this cup with this roster full of second tier MBL players, trust us they're good enough for the World stage.

Starting 9 lineup w/o DH
2b: Brain Haverton
SS: Kozy Larior
CF: Evan Tonis
RF: Eitan Barck
1b: Amit Joslyn
LF: Adam Hevenor
C: Eldad Gubashvili
3b: Rockatototo Volsososheq

Relievers:
Ace: Shelley Fint
LH specialist: Kevin Quippel
RH specialist: Mahmud al-Zaki
Middle man: Enton Heshel
Long man: Kaye O'Donnell
Swing (5th starter/long reliever): David Hill

Milchamian tend to play small ball, but on base small ball meaning the goal is to get on base then be a nuisance. Pitchers will go 7 innings most of the time unless they are getting bombed. And unless they are dying they will most likely go the distance. Relievers are becoming a bigger part of the game however if there is trouble Fint is coming in first most likely. (Think of Fint like the old 70s/80s relievers who would still go 170 IPs in a season and went 2 to 3 IPs every game). That is all.

World Baseball Classic 23 Champion!

A little craziness, another Barnettsville win

ST. CATHERINE--The Blue Jays started group play with a rollicking, wild 8-4 victory over Brewdomia at St. Catherine City Stadium last night. Phillip Matthews got things started with a leadoff home run to right center for a 1-0 lead. Barnettsville tacked on two more in the second as Cody Luzier hit a triple to score Nathaniel Davis. Matthews followed with a single to score Luzier to make it 3-0. Brewdomia hit a two-run homer in the third to cut the lead to 3-2. Luzier hit a two-run homer down the left field line in the fourth to regain their three run advantage at 5-2, after Davis reached on an error. Gemcity started to empty the benches after that, as Baker only pitched five innings, allowing the two runs on four hits. Baker also threw six strikeouts with two walks. Brewdomia manufactured another run in the seventh via two walks and a double. The Blue Jays answered right back with a bases-loaded triple by Bo McCracken, scoring Tim Watkins, Shawn Cartman, and Mark Johnson to make it 8-3. Brewdomia scored one in the ninth to set the final, but the goofiness didn’t end with the last run scored. Garry Barnett, Jr., the pariah of WBC 12, set the first two down in the ninth before allowing a solo home run to the third baseman. The pitcher, who was up following, was hit in the helmet on the second pitch following, leading to Barnett’s immediate ejection. Rick Vaughan came in to get the final out to end the game.

This is An archist News, your official Station for the World Baseball Classic.

Sandy Sanderson: The An archists lost to Courezzia 3 to 0 in last nights game. Séamus Séamuson allowed only two runs through eight innings while Gary Garrison gave up a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
On offense, the An archists were completely inept. They only achieved two hits, one by Gerald Fitzgerald in the 1st and the other by Nick Nickson in the 7th. Garrett Garretson also got walked in the 4th. He spoke to Greg Gregorson after the game.

Gregorson's interview of Garrettson wrote:Greg Gregorson:So Garrett, do you think the team achieved any sort of moral victory in the loss today.

Garrett Garrettson: I don't know how well I can speak for the entire team, but I feel like I achieved something significant with the walk in the 4th inning.

Greg Gregorson: You had shot yourself in the foot yesterday. What was it like trying to run the bases?

Garrett Garrettson: Well, I pretty much knew that Gerald, Nick and Nicky wouldn't hit the ball, so I didn't even take a leadoff.

Sandy Sanderson: Hopefully team An archy can get a few more hits in their next game against 13th ranked Quintessence of Dust.

This has been a presentation of An archist News, your official station for the World Baseball Classic.

JAMISON DISPOSES OF DIMONIQUID

Steve Jamison did not have the greatest showing in World Baseball Classic 12 as the best pitcher ever to play for Secristan choked when the tournament came to the homeland. He pitched both group stage games against Cassadaigua, and gave up 10 runs combined in 6 total innings of work. His playoff performance was a little better, but he didn’t win that either. This was an aberration for Steve, who leading up to this had been a big game pitcher for us, but it just wasn’t the case last time. Now, he must redeem himself, and he was given the opportunity to do that as debutant nation Dimoniquid made their way to Megabyte Industries Stadium. The first batter he faced, J.J. Wright was going to be his first victim. Here he could show that he’d be the old Jamison. The result? Hitting Wright in the elbow, and allowing him to go to first. Fortunately this leadoff batter named Wright is no Brittany, and he was contained until Matt Jarvis doubled down the right field line, scoring a run. Not the greatest start, but he would get out of it with no further damage. After talking with the coach, Steve really calmed down and would retired the side in order in the 2nd through the 6th inning. Meanwhile his teammates were giving him some run support. The great ManRod delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, and would score when John Fusco singled him in. Then in the fifth, with two away, Rodriguez and Fusco hit consecutive singles and both came around to score as Adrienne Hornicek, the first female ever to start for a Secristani team, hit a double to bring in two runs and push Secristan ahead to a 4-1 lead. The game seemed in the bag, and the coin jars were rattling. The Millionaires scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings as well, making the run Dimoniquid put across the plate in the top of the eighth to have no significance. It wasn’t a complete fairy tale of a performance for Jamison, but he did show that he is back and ready to be the pitcher that he was from World Baseball Classic 11 and prior. Tossing a complete game, he struck out eight and walked three. That second number he knows he needs to get down.

The Secristan Department of Sports reports an average bid price per seat of 31 rusas per game, likely because of the fact that it was the opener. Three people were arrested prior to the game for attempting to sneak into the stadium, which is really a stupid thing to do since this is considered Attempted Freeloading and carries a severe sentence. The next game against Tatuape is bringing some sales, but it certainly is not expected to be a big seller. There is some familiarity with them from World Lacrosse Championship 5, in which the group stage came down to the last day to see which one of us would advance to the knockouts, which of course, ended up being us. Tatuape had an off day, if you can call it that, to start the competition. In other Group action, Palmouth stunned Milchama in a marathon 15-inning affair.

Steroga lose opener

For the second year in a row Steroga is in the same qualifying group as Tocrowkia but we have been able to give them pretty good games in the past. Last night’s game was no exception as the Sterogans went into a tough environment as a road team and were nipped by Tocrowkia by the score of 3-2. The Nordics had their great ace Tommy Thunder on the mound and he gets the win but Steroga had some positives against him. For instance in the top of the second inning when Naman Shah hit a big two out double off of him and was driven in on a single by Bhupad Kapadia. After a single and a walk, the only one allowed by Thunder, we then had the bases loaded in the inning. It could have been a great inning for us but unfortunately Uttkarsh Motallzadeh was robbed on a nice leaping catch by Jill Haviland to get Tocrowkia out of the inning. Steroga then battled back again after the Nordics took a 2-1 lead by getting a solo home run from Prapti Subhudhi to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the inning, Tocrowkia benefitted from a horrible call by the umpire. With the count 2-2 on Johnny Stryker, Iravan Kumar clearly hit the corner on the outside of the plate to strike him out, but it was called ball three. Kumar was not pleased and as often happens the rattled pitcher served up a fat one on the next pitch that Stryker hit over the fence. As Stryker was rounding the bases, waving his fists like a five year old that just hit his first ever home run, Kumar began shouting at the umpire for the missed strike three call. Coach Patel did not argue on the field but after the game he told reporters that it was obvious that the umpire wanted Tocrowkia to win this game. Kumar pitched well and ended up getting a complete game, but after the game he too could only talk about the terrible call and warned that Stryker might not like the way he pitches to him when he comes to Steroga later in qualifying.

Connar Bobcats lose 2-0 to Lovisa

QAZOX- The Bobcats first game in WBC, did not go well, as the Bobcats lost to the Bisons 2-0. Starter Drey DeManuel of the Richmond Aces did well in his first international competition going 4 and 2/3 before getting hit in the arm by a pitch. DeManuel was pulled out as a precaution, and will be fine, but that's were things went sour. Long Relief Pitcher Brett Smith struggled giving up 5 hits in three inning, including a home run by the Left fielder. By time Deon Dennis and then Steven Morris got in the game, it was to late Lovisa got into a 2-0 lead. The lack of offense by the bobcats hitting didn't help much either only Sherman Yost got multiple hits in the game and Lloyd Teague and Yerimy Yoltey got hits.

Next up is other newby German zerabithea at 1-800Dontbustpants Stadium.

Henry Cobb gave up back-to-back-to-back HR in the bottom of the first (Kagami Mimeko [2-run shot], Amber Dextrous and Faye Toonmay) off his circle-change giving the hosts a 4-0 lead. Cobb didn't last past the 3rd inning as Dancougar jumped on Qazox early 6-0. While runs in the 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th cut the lead close, Dancougar's Sarah Propeado allowed just 1 earned run in 7 innings. Qazox' runs in the 6th and 7th came after errors by Ann Ahn, which allowed runners to score from 2nd. A 2-run HR from Matt Swanson in the 9th cut it to 7-5, but Abby Lenken managed to get both Ryan Griffen and Greg Hammond to pop out to third base earning a save, despite a fan throwing a stuffed penguin onto the field just after the final pitch.

Juan Thames went 3-5, with 3 stolen bases, but was left on 3rd in the 1st, 3rd and 8th innings. Up next for Qazox is Connar Republic back at home where Charles Ukecas will take the mound.

General chaos ensues, Jays lose 5-2
ST. CATHERINE--The Blue Jays evened their record in Group 7 to 1-1 with a five to two loss to Bluth Corporation at City Stadium. Barnettsville was limited to six hits, striking out sixteen times. Bluth started the scoring in the second with a grand slam off of starter Aaron Wilson, who only lasted one and two-thirds innings, allowing those four runs (two earned), and eight hits. He also surrendered four walks and struck out two. Tom Gemcity earned his first career ejection in the sixth for arguing a called third strike on reliever Garry Barnett, Jr. Barnett then earned his second early exit in as many games by hitting the leadoff batter in the seventh with the first pitch in the rear end. "That ump was a piece of (censored)," remarked the pitcher after the game. He didn't give A-Dub (Wilson) anything, sure as hell didn't give me anything -- on the mound OR the (censored) plate, and didn't give our guys any (censored)(censored) calls. We get that guy at the plate again, he may get a fastball from me upside his (censored) head." The only positive that came from the game was the pitching of the third reliever of the night, Sean Gindlesperger. He came in after Barnett's ejection and pitched a masterfully perfect three innings, with seven strikeouts and no walks. Shawn Cartman hit his first home run in the ninth inning, a two run shot to score the Jays' only runs. Game three will be tomorrow against Yafor II, and Matt Goodman will pitch for the Jays.

Quintessence of Dust began their WBC qualifying campaign with a bang, defeating Group 8 favourites Cassadaigua in front of a packed crowd on a windy weekend night at Raptor Park. But the victory singularly failed to provoke the wild jubilation that previous surprise wins, over Qazox, Liventia or Yafor 2, had provoked, as starting pitcher and Raptor favourite Manuel Oloffson had an erratic start in his international debut.

Pitching to 25 batters, he gave up five hits, four walks, two hit by pitch and one wild pitch; Cassadaigua began the game with two runs on three hits in the first innings, and were only denied a third run thanks to excellent defence from left fielder Emily Sanderson. Oloffson was relieved after five innings with the score at 2-1, and teammate Włodzisław Pawłowski served up two innings of relief for the win, with Benoît Labonté and Mazio Mizokuchi giving up just one walk and one hit to the final eight batters.

Oloffson, who finished the season with an ERA of 1.68 and won the National League's Pitch-a-Tent Prize, began the game with expectations high, and it was not the way he would have wished to introduce himself to the international arena. Christina Barrett tagged her second pitch to short center and Rachel Weston worked an eight pitch walk, and then Katie Sheridan hooked her first pitch to left field for another single. But excellent fielding from Sanderson saw her gun down Brittany Knowles with the throw to home. Elizabeth Murray then singled to right to drive in Weston and Sheridan.

Oloffson began the second by hitting Amanda Meyer, advancing her to second on a wild slider that Barry Pullman couldn't block, and then walking Michelle Driver. With three outs from eight batters faced, coach Ryan James could be seen angrily gesturing from the non-gender-specific-cattle-pen, and Oloffson managed to pull himself together, striking out two and getting a groundout to end the inning with two runners on.

Emily Sanderson, the national home run champion, led off the bottom of the second with a line drive that just Christina Barrett couldn't quite pull down at the fence, but it would take until the seventh innings for the team to score again. Oloffson walked Murray and hit Jennifer Branston in the third, prompting a heated discussion between James and Brittany Donnels over his second inside pitch. The incident was resolved once James offered his opponent a stick of gum, and Meyer struck out.

If there were positives to be taken from Oloffson's showing, perhaps his batting was one. It had been hoped that the Dagans would be inhibited by the lack of designated hitter at Raptor Park, and indeed while Rachel Andrews was 0 for 3, striking out twice, he hit a double to rightfield in the third that briefly promised to produce a tying run, before Maddox ground out and Momoko Koumura struck out looking on a razor's edge call that prompted yet more animated debates about the merits of the umpire's rectal functions.

Even once Pawłowski was brought in, the home team looked to be struggling. His first pitch was cleverly bunted for an infield hit by Driver, but Andrews bunted a third strike foul and Koumura and Isaac Blais, who disappointed with the bat but was excellent in the field, swiped two on a 4-6-3 double play - before the second basewoman fell victim to exactly the same play having singled in the sixth. Things looked bad in the seventh, as singles for Knowles and Sheridan and a walk for Murray loaded the bases, but Branston hit into a 6-4-3 double play to leave the score 2-1.

Finally, the rally came at the bottom of the seventh. Emily Sanderson went to first on a nine pitch walk and third from a single by Paul Boring, pinch hitting for Akonen. She scored to level the game as Jurgen Barthes hit a double down the right field line, and Branston's throwing error prevented Weston tagging out pinch runner Anne Wu. Kati Kauppi, batgirl for the national team in WBC12, pinch hit for Pawłowski, and drove in the fourth run with a single to center. Koumura led off the eighth with a double, but Katie Sanderson held her control to keep any further runs from being scored. Mizokuchi struck out Sheridan to end the ninth, and the game, at a less than decisive 4-2 margin.

Afterwards, James said he was "not worried" by Oloffson's performance, pointing out that giving up only two runs was still impressive against this level of opposition, and said he looked forward to the game against An archy, which Tal Isaachar will start. Captain Barry Pullman praised Emily Sanderson's performance. "It's easy to look at her home run, but even without that we would still have won - I think her fielding was really impressive, though, and if she hadn't got that assist in the first innings, it would have been a very different game." There are no confirmed changes for the coming game, where they will face the legendary Fergie Ferguson, reportedly capable of single handedly throwing a baseball over 60 feet through the air.

You're listening to WTB, AM 1450 in Zwischen, although if you're not in Zwischen the weather reports won't do you very much good. They, if the researchers did say so themselves, had been a particularly brilliant decision; it eliminated the need for advertisers and making the kids talk between half-innings all in one fell swoop. They got repetitive when there were seventeen-plus in three-and-a-half-hours, granted, but nobody minded hearing over and over again that it was windy, cool, and clear-skied. Good for long-distance broadcasting.

As for Ben, on the other hand, he could have needed a weather report.

"Zwangzug up n-n-nine--five over Antarctistan, who are playing their first ever World Baseball Classic game. It's the visitors who are dominant today, however, and with two on and two out here in the eighth Minium hoping to keep the rally alive. Minium, let's see. She was..." Ben ruffled through his papers, teeth chattering even in the press box. "Considered arguably the best catcher last tournament by the brrrrocket Report of Newmanistan. She's already driven in a run today, that double scoring Quashnock before. This one's drilled to center, the center fielder drifting back--it's over his head, it'll go all the way to the wall. Alperin will score easily, Quashnock comes in too, Minium--holds up at second base, not surprising, speed not her greatest skill, but she can connect..."

He needed to drink something else. Not water, or at least not ice water. Maybe they had hot chocolate?

"And if the reliever can just get out of this inning, oh maybe not, here comes the coach to the mound...this isn't the second visit, is it? Nah, it's been a long inning, that's all. Okay, they're going to leave him in." Take him out or maybe get out of this inning, I just need something warm!

It shouldn't have been so strange. The World Assembly called it a left-wing utopia, the same as Zwangzug. They had some world-class cyclists, and the odd racewalker or two. And, yes, Zwangzug could at times--many of them--be cold.

But not that cold. Baseball was a summer game, and summer jobs were...well, summer endeavors. But...wait, Ben thought. This far south, it's their winter!

He was vaguely aware of cheering around him, and the cold had not dulled his senses to the point that he thought the applause was for his mental breakthrough. No, it was for the fact that Blaise Spacchi had meekly popped out to second base.

"Right, right," he blinked. "And Spacchi pops out to second. So we go to the middle of the eighth, it's Zwangzug 11, Antarctistan 5..."

PITCHING STRANGELY INEFFECTIVE AGAINST BUMBLEBEES

The Babbage Islands- Even though Newmanistan is coming off an eleven run game and that in the past we have had such great hitters such as Sarah Boland, Rachel Crockett, and Carrie Nicolette in our lineup, it's generally well known that our bread and butter as always been starting pitching. If Newmanistan scores six runs in a game, then you can pretty much put it in the books as a victory. This is why last night’s 7-6 loss at the hands of regional rival The Babbage Islands seems strange to us. Kristen Haynes had a rough day, it happens to all pitchers, but the bullpen didn’t do the job when needed, like they are supposed to do. They don’t get called upon a whole lot, but when they do, they usually come through for us. This was the first time that the Rockets had ever scored six or more runs in a game and lost. They did have a 6-5 loss to Secristan back in World Baseball Classic 10, but even that was in extended extra innings.

Newmanistan did not get off to a bad start, and put a run across the plate in the first inning as Stacie Meadows led things off with a double and was driven in by a Meghan Butler single. In the top of the third inning, Newmanistan pushed their lead to 3-0 with Meadows again leading the inning off, this with a single and a pair of stolen bases. Rachel Ryan flew out to left, but the sacrifice fly drove in Meadows. After Butler was retired, Natalie Monroe hit a solo HR to right field to put Newmanistan up by the three runs. Kristen Haynes had retired the side in order in each of the first three innings, and things seemed to be business as usual before things began to slope downward in the fourth. The Bumblebees cleanup batter delivered a two run double after Haynes had surrendered a single and a walk. Still, she got out of the inning without further damage. We would have then expected her to settle in during the next inning because that is what our pitchers always do, but that would just not happen in the bottom of the fifth. The Babbage Islands put two more runs on the board on a bases loaded single with two away, and now all of the sudden the home team was up by the score of 4-3. Even with that, the Rockets had a response and tied the game back up in the sixth inning, thanks to a Kristen Wheeler RBI double that brought in Jennifer Dawkins. Haynes would pitch the bottom of the sixth as her last inning of work and left it with the score still tied at four. Newmanistan was going to be in a dogfight here to the end, it appeared.

After the Rockets were held off the board in the top of the seventh, Christina Sanders brought in Erica Darby to pitch the bottom of the inning. The relievers know that even though the rotation is as good as it is, that they are expected to produce in situations like this just the way they do back at home. They are on the team for a reason, and that is because they are the best in the country at the specific role in which Sanders chose them for to be a part of the pen. Darby however walked the first two batters she faced, and even though she got a double play on the next batter, there was still a runner on third and two away. Erica was expected to retire the next batter, but that would not be the case as he hit a grounder up the middle to make it 5-4. The Rockets would continue show their skill in the top of the eighth off of the Babbage Islands bullpen and get a pair of runs, that figured to be the game winners. It was Jennifer Dawkins as the big gun, smacking a two run triple off the top of the left field wall to make it 6-5 as Meghan Butler and Natalie Monroe, who each singled, came around to score. With the lead, Newmanistan was going to cruise to the victory because that’s what they always do is what we thought. Sara Schaefer pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and in the bottom of the ninth in came Kristen Collins. We don’t use closers much, but that is her job and closers are supposed to thrive here. She did, with the first two batters. One more out, and the game was a over. But then a bloop single. And then, it came. A two-run blast over the center field fence to give The Babbage Islands a dramatic walk-off 7-6 victory. The Rockets sat in the dugout stunned by what they just saw as the stadium went berserk and their players danced at home plate.

This isn’t supposed to happen to us. But it just did. Better now then in the playoffs. We certainly wouldn’t want to be Taffy 3 tomorrow as these Rockets look for redemption.

Profero falls short of #8 Yafor II
by Chris Bones
Profero Sun

Yesterday, the Penguins suffered an opening-round loss to eighth-ranked Yafor II, 10-2. In their inaugural game in the Classic, Leinkrum suffered with control, walking five batters in just six innings. Greg Monroe hit a home run with one on and two out in the 5th inning for the only Profero runs of the ball game.

Yafor II 3 1 0 1 0 1 0 2 2 10 14 0
Profero 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 2 6 1

"It's not what I hoped for, but Leinkrum's control suffered and we couldn't get a string of hits together," manager Trey Rollen says. "That'll come in time - it's good to have the first-game jitters over with but now we need to step up and perform."

Indeed, the Penguins struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-5 in those situations. On the bright side, J.J. Wright went 2-4 with a stolen base, and defensively, the Penguins were solid save one error by first baseman Greg Monroe to let in an unearned run in the 9th.

Profero Stats:
2B: Skooler
RBI: Monroe 2
HR: Monroe
SB: Wright

L: Leinkrum, 6 IP, 6 ER, 5 BBs, 4 Ks

A win is a win, and that is what the Purple Knights need to know about last nights game. Not once again they came so close to being upset to games in a row, not that Number 30 almost upset them the number 4, not that it took them 13 inning, no all they need to know from last night is that they won. If they can forget everything else from last nights game they may be able to come back from this and their opening day loss. Yes, it was close, but no that does not mean we are falling apart as a team. They may not be as good as they once were, and they may be coming back and forth from the Olympics, but the team is still a team and they need to remember that if they want to make an impact on this tournament.

Two games a week is not that hard for most players, and it hasnt prooved to be that much for the Knights. Earlier this week they downed the Delaclavans in Capitalizt Slani making them team number one from their Group, this game though proved to be a bit harder in Delaclava, but they pulled it out. A 2-2 tie in the 13th hadn't been broken since the second when Socki Lewis homered home himself and Alexander Parea. Until Lewis's third homer of the season in the 13th inning the game had been a 2-2 tie for over 10 innings. Lewis did not get his usual walk off though do to the away game, but with willie Strava saving the game it was as much as won, and it was.

Fulfilling the Seasonial Quota
Wolves produce one-in-a-nonillion game
Vephrall 9, Seasonia 0

MEICE — Vephrall decided to go ahead and get all the obligatory WBC rare events out of the way against severely overmatched opposition in their second game of the campaign.

"Obviously, we were riding a high after the Taeshan game," said shortstop Torossud Hesaramba, referring to the Auric Wolves' 5–4 upset of the world's fourth-ranked team. "So we decided to just have some fun in this one."

Starting pitcher Sorn Mantlom got it underway in the top of the first by walking the first batter, committing a balk to advance the runner to second, and then hitting the second batter with a pitch to put runners on first and second. The Vephrall infield then shifted left for the number three hitter, putting second baseman Mucar Kadorisone just a couple steps from the bag. The Seasonia manager sent the runners, and right on cue, the batter sent a line drive up the middle. Kadorisone leaped up to make the catch, tagging the runner from first on her way back down, and she then calmly jogged over to second and stepped on the bag before the runner could get back. So there's the unassisted triple play out of the way, inning over.

The bottom of the inning started with a leadoff single from Menburid Tingacens. Kadorisone followed up with a single of her own, advancing Tingacens to third. On the first pitch of Jing Sytrobes' at bat, Kadorisone broke for second. Sytrobes took the pitch for a strike. The Seasonia catcher successfully got Kadorisone out at second, but Tingacens had a large lead from third and went for the plate on the catcher's throw, successfully sliding in safe before the shortstop could get the ball back to the plate. Steal of home, check, and one-nothing Wolves.

The second inning was relatively unspectacular, the only thing notable being a solo home run from Parogam Baspaalt, though he then proceeded to repeat that on his second at-bat with two out in the bottom of the fourth. He was followed this time by Dings Cuizamed, who struck out to theoretically end the inning, but the catcher dropped the third strike and Cuizamed was able to reach first base to extend the inning. The Seasonia pitcher then got another strikeout against his counterpart to really end it.

Tingacens started the fifth inning by flying out, but a double and two walks then loaded the bases for Vephrall. That was then followed by the pitcher's second-worst nightmare: a hit batsman resulting in an RBI. After Hesaramba collected his third strikeout of the game in the next at-bat, the Seasonia pitcher then had to confront his very worst nightmare. He hung a breaking ball right in the happy zone and Baspaalt punished him. Third big fly of the game, this one a bases-clearing grand slam to extend the Auric Wolves' lead to eight. The Wolves would bat around in the inning, with Tingacens being unfortunate enough to produce both the first and third outs.

Kadorisone led off the sixth with a triple, leaving her just a home run short of the cycle, but nobody was able to bring her home. Hesaramba concluded the inning with – you guessed it, a strikeout. Only six innings finished, and Hesaramba was already the not-so-proud owner of a golden sombrero. Cuizamed then hit a triple in the seventh, leaving him just a home run short of the cycle as well, but he was likewise unable to score. But it would be Kadorisone stepping up to the plate to lead off the bottom of the eighth, and the way this game had gone, everyone knew what was going to happen. Sure enough, she hit the ball over the right-field wall to complete a natural cycle and bring the score to 9-0. The Wolves would get a couple more hits in the inning, but then Hesaramba came to the plate with two out. Again, everyone knew what was going to happen. Swing and a miss, and strikeout number five for him.

Lost in all this was the fact that Mantlom, of course, threw a no-hitter. As badly as we wanted to give him a perfect game, we wanted the unassisted triple play, too. Sometimes sacrifices must be made.

"We were just happy to go ahead and get all that silly stuff out of the way," said manager Taratchy Fihor after the game. "Now we can just focus on playing fundamental baseball and winning games instead of trying to get into the record books like most of the other teams in the competition."

Pitching coach Rilin Sadiques then elbowed this reporter in the ribs. "Pretty dang fun, though, wasn't it?"
