NationStates College Football season 5

Results Thread
Discussion Thread

Here it is! The fifth edition of NationStates College Football. Here you will find Rosters for your opposition, and all RPs should be posted here too.
Any questions should be posted in the discussion thread, to avoid OOC clutter, please. Failing that, feel free to send a telegram to either myself, or any other conference host.

There are a few changes this time around, so if you're a returning team, please read carefully. New teams, welcome!

The NSCF procedure is outlined here.

There will be six conferences this season; Big Eight, Horizon, Mineral, Sequoia and Woodlands return, with a sixth conference, Equinox, joining NSCF. Each will have six teams, and the regular season will be a double round-robin, for a total of 10 games. Games will be scorinated three times a week, on both Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please check your conference for a projected RP cutoff time. Scores will be posted here.

After all ten regular season games, there will be an out-of-conference week, with each team playing up to three games against opposition from other conferences. These games will not count toward conference championships, but WILL affect playoff seedings. All OOC games must be arranged by the teams playing them, and confirmed by the end of the first week of the regular season (matchday three).

The playoff format is twelve teams -- conference champions plus the next best four by OSPI, and two selected by the NSCF committee -- in a seeded, three round, single-elimination bracket. Seeds for the playoffs will be determined purely by OSPI, and the higher seed will have home advantage until the final, which will take place at a neutral venue yet to be decided. Any nation can put together a final hosting bid, before the start of the playoffs, to be voted on by the NSCF Committee.

Freedom’s Altar University Flames

Image
Courtesy of TGT Design

Freedom’s Altar University, established in 2005, is the first University to ever be created in Yesopalitha. The state-of-the-art, modern campus has 30,000 students, and teaches all disciplines. There had been numerous two-year colleges with four-year programs, but Freedom’s Altar University is the first big university in Yesopalitha.

The push has been made by the Board of Directors to start an athletic program for students as well as to generate revenue. Starting this year, FAU will have programs in football, basketball (men and women), baseball, and fastpitch. Here is the FAU football team.

Note: Unless specified, I will RP my team’s results one way or another…

RP Style: -3
Strong blitzing, turnover-generating defense, opportunistic, running, trick playing offense, field-position special teams

Coaching Staff:

Head Coach: Jim Marksman, Jr. 34 years old
Coach Marksman is the first coach ever in FAU’s history, and a man that the Board of Directors named as the prospective head coach for many years. Known as a hard-nosed drill sergeant, it is odd that he doesn’t swear. He gains respect of his players by sticking to his down-to-earth ways, and is respectful of everyone. He emphasizes on ball security and turnovers more than anything else, and loves football.

Offensive Coordinator: Troy Liseth, 40 years old
In contrast to Coach Marksman’s ways is Offensive Coordinator Troy Liseth, who is a funny, outgoing man. He loves to talk about football, and is very easy to deal with. He is notorious for his unconventional play on offense, using trick plays whenever he can gain an advantage. When being Head coach for the Woreton High Cougars in the 5A Football Championships last year, he had his quarterback run a fake spike that resulted in the tie-breaking touchdown in a 35-28 win over the Irelin High Braves. Just how many times his style will bite the Flames remains to be seen.

Defensive Coordinator: Mark Anderson, 27 years old
Although Coach Marksman does a lot with the defense, specializing in it comes down to Defenive Coordinator Mark Anderson. This football junkie loves to blitz, and exotic coverage that quarterbacks have never seen will be common. He played free safety during his high school career, which gives him a bond with his safeties. Can he put together a defense that will actually stop teams? That remains to be seen.

Special Teams Coach: Ryan Imbota, 29 years old
Coach Ryan Imbota leads the Special Teams. He will focus on field position more than the actual scoring, though he says that missed extra points will not be tolerated. A man of few words, FAU will most likely be doing a lot of onside kick drills.

Other Coaches/Trainers:

Running Backs/Fullbacks: Liam Trotter, 28 years old
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: Erik Timer, 30 years old
Offensive Line Coach: Ricky Rimer, 34 years old
Quarterbacks Coach: Jimmy Balmer, 28 years old
Defensive Line Coach: Thomas Erkwine, 45 years old
Linebackers Coach: William Bennet III, 39 years old
Safeties Coach: Yttribe Kiljoy, 43 years old
Cornerbacks Coach: Ottawa Lineaus, 34 years old
Kickers/Punter Coach: Jack Kimberlake, 26 years old
Strength/Conditioning Coach: Evan Thompson, 35 years old
Team Physician: Dr. Ivan Mottam, 56 years old
Team Chef: Henry Rem, 44 years old

And now introducing the Freedom’s Altar University Flames:

Note: Ratings are what the strengths are for this football team. They do not compare to other programs.

OFFENSE

The Flames run most of their plays in a standard I-formation, with 5 linemen, 1 fullback, 1 running back, 1 quarterback, 1 tight end, and 2 wide receivers.

1. Quarterbacks

#11 Nero Williams Sr. 6’4” 200lbs.
#4 Patrick Creighton So. 6’2” 185lbs.
#3 Timothy Henry Fr. 6”5” 180lbs.

Nero Williams takes the helm for the Flame Offense. He has a great arm, but also has accuracy issues. He can move around in the pocket, outside of it, and even run for some gains. Whether he throws to the right jersey or not will determine his legacy in the inaugural season of Flame football. Patrick Creighton backs Williams up, but both he and Timothy Henry are rawer than Nero is.
Rating:6

2. Running Backs
#34 Andre Innouye Jr. 5’8” 225lbs.
#25 Yohannes James Sr. 6’2” 210lbs.
#27 Taylor Ukhart So. 6’0” 220lbs.
#28 Ryan Kim Fr. 5”11” 200lbs.

The Flame backfield won’t be flashy, but it should be consistent. Andre Innouye is a pound-it-every time running back, while Yohannes James is the speedster who will take over at times. Ryan Kim has surprised Coach Marksman with his blocking skills, and may be used in third down situations. Since most of Nero Williams’s big passes come from play-action, a running game is required, and these backs provide that.
Rating:9

3. Fullbacks
#30 Chip Newman Sr. 5’8” 260lbs.
#43 Lance Uldrict So. 6’0” 245lbs.

Not much to say here. Chip blocks well, and if he gets dropped, Lance can take over just fine.
Rating:7

4. Center
#72 Rocky Telmar Sr. 6’3” 325lbs.
#66 Taren Hornby Jr. 6’0” 330lbs.
#65 Ken Mons So. 6’3” 350lbs.

Rocky Telmar leads the Offensive line for the Flames. He is a very intelligent young man and will call all the line audibles. He is the unquestionable leader of this line, and really, this offense, and this line will go as far as he does. Taren Hornby is learning, but really, Rocky is a key player for the Flames.
Rating: 10

5. Offensive Tackles
#74 Troy Ulrickson Jr. 5’10” 300lbs.
#76 Austin Rehaut Jr. 6’0” 310lbs.
#68 Robert Tee So. 5’11” 290lbs.
#77 Mike Meham Fr. 6’2” 325lbs.

Troy Ulrickson and Austin Rehaut room together at the Unversity. The two childhood friends are the Left and Right Tackles for the Flames. They communicate to Rocky Telmar very well, and are solid linemates themselves. Troy specializes in run-blocking while Austin is better in pass protection. They look to perform well this season.
Rating: 9

6. Offensive Guards
#70 Richard Lawson Fr. 6’5” 315lbs.
#63 Lewis McDommel Jr. 6’3” 310lbs.
#61 Jackson Remmel Sr. 5’10” 300lbs.

“Richard Lawson is a freak of nature,” states Coach Marksman. The highly touted freshman will start for the Flames at Left Guard, an important position, being the blind spot for Quarterback Nero Williams. Lewis McDommel is in at Right Guard. Jackson Remmel made noise during the offseason for gaining thirty pounds of muscle. Perhaps the weakest part of the O-line, but still strong.
Rating:8

7. Tight Ends
#80 Joey Erickson Jr. 5’10” 260lbs.
#82 Gerald Monk So. 6’1” 255lbs.

Joey Erickson is the pass-catching Tight End, and Gerald Monk the pass-blocking one. Joey drops a lot of passes, but he is very athletic, so he makes up for the dropped passes by making some very hard ones. Gerald is in on obvious running situations.
Rating:6

8. Wide Receivers
#81 Fred Hopkins Sr. 6’6” 190lbs.
#88 Louis Campbell Sr. 6’5” 180lbs.
#84 Jimmy Houston So. 5’11” 195lbs.
#86 Kim Mehandell Fr. 6’2” 200lbs.
#89 Cameron Nehandu Jr. 6’0” 210lbs.

The Flames rarely have more than two receivers on the field at one time, so they only need two good hands. Fred Hopkins and Louis Campbell are two tall, capable route runners. They aren’t very fast, but their height gives them an advantage. In the need for a third receiver, Jimmy Houston has emerged as a third-down threat up the seam. Kim Mehandell and Cameron Nehandu will probably not see any action unless a Hail-Mary is needed. Fred and Louis can block as well.
Rating:7

DEFENSE

The Flame defense mostly consists of the 4-3-4, but Defensive Coordinator Mark Anderson isn’t afraid to do a 3-4-4 sometimes and sometimes even a 3-2-5. Be prepared for anything.

1. Defensive Tackle
#60 Red Brune Sr. 5’10” 290lbs
#73 Harold James Jr. 5’11” 300lbs
#62 Thomas Pallos So. 5’10” 285lbs.
#64 Kurt Yimber So. 6’4” 310lbs.

The Defensive Tackles are the weakest part of the Defense. Red Brune is a stud in run defense, but has problems getting to the Quarterback during training camp. Harold James is a pedestrian tackle. Don’t expect much production from this group – the Linebackers will have to step it up.
Rating: 4

2.Defensive End
#59 Christopher Newman Sr. 6’0” 265lbs.
#55 Kyle Van Helstron Jr. 5’11” 255lbs.
#71 Merius Van Tramp Fr. 5’10” 230lbs.

The Defensive Ends are a bit better. Christopher Newman is a ferocious pass rusher, and Kyle Van Helstron does his job well.
Rating:7

3. Outside Linebackers:
#57 Iron Fist Jr. 6’5” 245lbs.
#52 Kenneth DeFoe So. 6’2” 250lbs.
#51 Eras Timor Sr. 5’10” 260lbs
#49 Enoch Yesopath Fr. 6’10” 230lbs

The Outside Linebackers play hard, hit hard, and make plays. The story of how Iron Fist got his name is a legend at FAU. He is a very good all around player. Ken DeFoe doesn’t get the spotlight as much, but his play is also solid. A very good group of backups as well.
Rating:8.5

4. Middle/Inside Linebackers
#54 Darren McMarlin Sr.6’0” 255lbs.
#45 Zachary Bommalli Jr. 5’11” 245lbs.

Darren McMarlin is the Quarterback of the Defense. He is very intelligent, and boy can he move. Look for him to be a household name for FAU fans this season.
Rating:9

5. Safeties
#19 Jose Don Carlos Fr. 6’4” 200lbs
#22 Daniel Johnson So. 6’3” 195lbs
#26 Jackie Battle Sr. 5’10” 180lbs

Jose Don Carlos is a highly touted Freshman with freakish ball skills, and Daniel Johnson provides a nice presence in the Free Safety spot.
Rating:7.5

6. Cornerbacks
#36 Isaac Lancaster Jr. 6’6”180
#37 Luther Merlander Sr. 6’5” 175lbs
#31 Mitchell Vander Lander Fr. 6’4” 170lbs
#39 Marcus Octavius Jr. 6’3” 175lbs

The Cornerbacks are solid. Isaac Lancaster and Luther Merlander are both so tall that they can jump higher than most wide receivers. Teams that wish to air it out against the Flames must keep an eye on these two.
Rating:8

SPECIAL TEAMS

1. Kick Returner
#63 Kim Mendenhell Fr. 6’2” 200lbs.
#31 Mitchell Vander Lander Fr. 6’4” 170lbs

Kim Mendenhell and Mitchell Vander Lander proved that they are the best Kick Returners during training camp. Kim is very good in open space, and Mitchell can break tackles. Mostly, Coach Marksman doesn’t want to risk injuring his starters in Special Teams.
Rating:6

2. Punt Returner
#26 Jackie Battle Sr. 5’10” 180lbs
#31 Mitchell Vander Lander Fr. 6’4” 170lbs

Jackie Battle set the Yesopalithan Inter-Community Collegiate League record last year with five punts returned for touchdowns. Coach Marksman is hoping the success can be reciprocated.
Rating:8

3. Punter
#8 Nevin Michaels Sr. 5’8” 150lbs

Nevin Michaels is known for his booming kicks. He can boot a punt sixty yards in three steps without the wind. He will be crucial in the field-position game that the Flames play with.
Rating:9

4. Kicker
#7 Ivan Ragnoroff Fr. 5’10” 145lbs

Although so tiny, Ivan can reportedly kick a Field Goal fifty-three yards, which is amazing for a kid that just got out of high school. For a team that focuses on ball control and point scoring, Field Goals are crucial, and Ivan seems to be up to the job.

West TaQud Cereal Killers

They are named the cereal killers because rumor has it that dean Tim "Cereal" Kilow was angry, he would take a bowl of cereal and torture it somehow. The athletic director scrap up as much money he could to create a college football.

Saugeais State University Lancers
Stadium: Montbenoit Dome (cap. 54,109)
Image

Style of play: -3
Defense: 4-3

Pre season breakdowns:

Offense - Neil Charon is gone from the general position, but Christian Nathanson has learned from his senior well. A mobile quarterback, he has posted an unofficial 4.6 second 40-yard dash, and has a 76% passing efficiency rating stemming from last season. Of course, he didn't play that often due to Charon, but with the help of a mostly veteran front five and receiver corps, Nathanson could cause all sorts of problems in conference. The one question is if freshman tackle Alex Arthur can transition his high school play to college success; Nathanson may need to watch his back every now and then. Helping take the load off of Nathanson are running backs Nelson Gassett and Clayton Riffel, both seniors as well. This is their first years starting, after riding the bench most of their college careers, they are still unproven on the football field. Only game time will tell if they are the ground game the Lancers need. B+

Defense - The defense is also chalk full of veteran players, as 7 of the starting 11 are seniors. Experience, especially in the cornerback and safety positions, is crucial nowadays, but the one question lies with the defensive line. Mostly seniors, yes, but half the line hasn't played a competitive collegiate down, and that very well could give the opposition the space they need to pass all day. The defensive backs have the speed to cover the field, but if the oppositions decide to air it out every play, they will get tired fast. B

Special Teams - Pete Srock is back for one final season, who last season converted 91% of his PATs. He can kick well within 35 yards, but further out and by the hash marks he is spotty at best. New punter Jace Norris has shown great promise in the spring workouts, with his ability to place his punts near the sideline a valuable asset to the team. Both Jamie Mealing and Alton Moisan are back for their senior season, as they led the team in kickoff and punt return yards respectively, as well as score 4 touchdowns combined from returns. B-

Riversburg-Madison University Ducks

Image

The Ducks had a golden opportunity last season to just maybe sneak into the NSCF Semi Final. They had a top-notch QB in Koos Vestergaard and the right pieces on both offense and defense to make it happen. They fell majorly short. RMU will have plenty of time to wonder what might have been had it beaten the University of Arkinesia. But the more pressing issue for the Ducks to figure out is how to replace Koos Vestergaard and others on this once senior-laden team. Kyrill Rosenboom is one of the best coaches in the country, but he's certainly got his work cut out for him in what will almost certainly be a rebuilding year.

Frbiba State University is entering their third in the NSCF competition. Biggest three matchups are against Utica, Arkinesia and Jagoza. The two matchups with Jagoza will be huge games, as they are the Firebirds' biggest rivals. Expect Utica to try continue the Firebirds' bogey team and increase their streak to 6. UArk were swept 2-0 by FSU last year and the season before, but they are never to be counted out, as they are now, the defending NSCF Champions. These 6 games will play huge roles, given that only 8 other regular season matchups exist. The House o' Pain will surely sink them all!

The University of Jagoza are the arch rivals of Michael VII's top university, the Frbiba State Firebirds. The main Campus and Football Stadium are directly opposite (over the river) from Frbiba State's campus, offering for an extremely fierce contested rivalry, not only for its geographical proximity and history, but for the different styles of play that the two schools play. Jagoza hasn't won a match over Frbiba State since Valentino's first year with Frbiba State, with Marchild trying to win his first rivalry game against Frbiba State. 14 long years since the Groundhog's last defeated the Firebirds, with this experienced side, the Groundhogs have the belief that they can beat the Firebirds and lead themselves towards a Conference Championship and ultimately, a NSCF Championship. The two matches against FSU will be the big matches, the annual homecoming match being a part of the rivalry, as Jagoza's homecoming match has always been played against Frbiba State, this time being a part of the prestigious Woodlands Conference, undisputedly the toughest conference this year, with both NSCF 3 finalists and the famed UArk Fighting Wyverns. A playoff berth will be considered a huge success by all the papers West of the River, but East of the River, no one will care as long as FSU beat their hated Cross-river Rivals! Look out for the Groundhogs, especially in the rivalry matches. GO JAGOZA GO!

Coaching Staff:

Head Coach: Jack Urban, 4th Season
-Coach Urban, entering his 4th season as head coach, has Orange and Black blood running through his veins. His father, Michael Urban, is the longest tenured and winningest coach in Bucktown History, winning 10 ANCA Championships in his 17 year career at Bucktown. Coach Urban also played for his father, leading the Bobcats to 3 of those Championships as Quarterback. Coach Urban had a short-lived professional career cut short due to a blown out knee. He quickly turned to coaching and was hired by Marcus Thomas at Wickline University to be Quarterbacks Coach. After two seasons he was quickly hired by his Father, and was prepped to take over as head coach when Michael retired.

O-Coordinator: Jonas Wood, 3rd Season
-Jonas Wood is entering his 3rd season as Coordinator for the Bobcats. Wood, who came to Bucktown after a 15 year professional playing career, is always looking to improve this high powered offense. Wood played for Wickline University, then went on to become the 1st overall pick in the ANFL draft. Wood has been a part of this coaching staff for 5 years, spending his first two years as QB Coach.

D-Coordinator: Chris Thompson, 3rd Season
-Thompson doesn’t come from a traditional football background, and never even played in college, however he is known around Arcatea as the great defensive mind. Bringing a new style of coaching to the table, his defensive units are very flexible and can quickly adapt to changes in the offense, as all players are generally able to play two or three positions in the unit. His hybrid defense, which generally focuses around the 4-3 and the 3-3-5 stack, have been regarded as some of the best while coaching in the ANCA.

Special Teams Coordinator: Mark Aaron, 2nd Season
-Aaron was hired last season as a result of poor special teams. His main focus was to work on accuracy with the kicking team, and improving coverage for the return team. This season, he will return to the recruiting trail after a suspension for improper recruiting with his previous team.

Offensive Line Coach: Cal Burgess, 1st Season
-Former All-pro tackle, also coached in ANFL for 2 seasons.

Running Backs Coach: Mike Libbey, 1st Season
-Coached Greenleaf West (High School) for 10 seasons, 3 City Championships, also coached 3 current ANFL backs, including current MVP Marvin Olsen.

Quarterbacks Coach: Terrance Paine, 1st Season
-Former Bucktown standout, led team to ANCA finals, coached QB’s @ Arcatean Coast Junior College, reunited with QB Jake Wilson.

Wide Receivers Coach: Chris Potter, 1st Season
-Newly retired ANFL player, led ANFL in receiving yards 3 seasons ago.

Defensive Line Coach: Van Heard, 1st Season
-Former D-Coordinator and Head Coach for now defunt College of Arts and Sciences (Arcatean Junior College), comes to Bucktown with 20 years coaching experience

Linebackers Coach: Robert Wayne, 1st Season
-Following Coach Heard from CAS, was D-Coordinator and Linebackers coach before closure

Defensive Backs Coach: Jon Box, 1st Season
-Coach Box comes to Bucktown from Red Mountain Junior College where he was the Defensive Backs Coach, also spent 5 seasons in ANFL

Strength and Conditioning Coach: Albert Fargas, 1st Season
-Comes to Bucktown from the Arcatean International Competition Institute which trains National Teams before International Competitions, Co-founder of AICI

Accademia del Magisterio Vangeli
Image

Bio:
The Vangeli [van-jelly] (meaning Heralds) are the premier college gridiron side in the nation, and are looking forwards to bringing their game to the bigger audience, whilst bracing themselves for the beatings that will ultimately happen as a result of this.

Gridiron was introduced to Ossidiacqua by a referee who was sick of handing out yellow and red cards to players on Acquans teams used to a more roughneck way of playing. In particular, universities and public institutions have taken to the new sport with real gusto, and a representative team is being sent to NSCF5 as a result.

The Accademia del Magisterio is the youth training wing of the Magisterium, which occupies a complex place in the life of Ossidiacqua. More than just a church, it also provides a great many services to the public, and has a huge amount of influence upon the politicians that run the country. With Ossidiacqua's dependence on antiquated technology during the Pause Time to provide them with drinking water and electricity, the knowledge for which had long since been forgotten, it was left to the Magisterium to start training their priests how to manage and mend the machines. Only, they had nothing to go off. So what started out as an honest attempt to provide a public service for their people, ended up with priests and their apprentices being sent out to pray to a steadily more technologically-minded deity that they wouild be granted with the good fortune enough to work out how to fix them. With mixed results. Nowadays, the same practise has continued, with the same mixed results, though the Magisterium continues to enjoy great power. Imagine next time your washing machine breaks and you call for a repair man, that he turns up with any knowledge of how the thing works, and instead prays to his machine-god and has a fiddle round, hopping it works again. That's not far off what happens here.

The Accademia is a nationwide institution, and every state capital and many other major cities have their own schools. The original school remains the biggest and most prestigious, however, and situated in Sant'Elia it commands a powerful position as the largest educatioinal institution in the nation, paradoxically to outsiders it is the biggest investor in both theology and science research in the nation, despite the vast majority of its students being enrolled on what is essentially the same course. That to become a tech-priest. Nationwide, it has over two million students at any one time, and the Sant-Elia Accademia has about two-hundred thousand in varying stages of education.

Stoneshore College Bruins

Image

Location: Cape Dutch, Stoneshore, Cosumar

School Size: 23,009 undergraduates

Team History: Unlike RCU, Stoneshore has a less extensive and less successful NSCF history. The team had a poor debut in NSCF 2, failing to make the playoffs or climb very high in the rankings. The team only won a couple of games after their 3-0 start in NSCF 2, losing all of the rest, including embarrassing 45 point losses to RCU. NSCF 3 nor NSCF 4 was much better, though NSCF 4 was the Bruins' winningest to date. However, there are bright spots, such as the return of several key players. Stoneshore hopes to improve this year by aiming for a playoff spot.

Staff: Head Coach Horace Browning, Offensive Coordinator Vince Dill, Defensive Coordinator Bert Stern, and Special Teams Coordinator John Barlow Sr.

Welcome to the University of Alzburg-Dyka!

Well, as the sign says - welcome to UAD, one of the best Universities in all of Mytannion. Inter-university sport is growing in Mytannion and college football (gridiron), has a particularly strong following with teams like Thessia State, ENU, Decraa College and of course, our very own UAD squaring off against each other every year. This year has marked a very strong year in sport for UAD - with the college football team winning yet another MNCF crown as they stormed to a 13-0 record and the national title, meaning they are the first team to enter double figures in terms of the amount of MNCF National Championships they have won. The University has also had success in college football of the other variety (dare I say soccer?!), as they won their first national title in this sport. Although college soccer doesn't receive as much attention as the Mytanar Takillega it still remains important to UAD to have won another national title. They also had success in tennis of all sports, winning both the men's, women's and mixed doubles titles - Marco Fallatov and Ana Vudovic having a huge degree of success for UAD.

The University is renowned for providing students with excellent degrees in Sciences, with biology having a huge amount of funding diverted towards it. A new interdisciplinary bioscience department was funded jointly by the state and the university - costing a huge M(C)52 million - which, in Mytanar terms is an extremely large amount of money (it should be noted that the Mytanar Economy is almost perpetually stuck in a recession, Mytannion is possibly the poorest 'developed' nation in Rushmore). The University furthers research into genetics for the government with the state and the university having a connection that dates back well into the 1800s (it is 1995 according to the Mytanar calendar), with the royal family having lived at 'the Alzburg' since 1809 - the Alzburg is a palace located on a hill above the town of Dyka and is well known throughout the nation. The people at Dyka University liked the royal family so much that they actually decided to name the University after the royal's summer dwelling in 1840. Since then, the University has been known as the University of Alzburg-Dyka and is a centre of (as aforementioned), sciences but also Rushmori Politics. Rushmore is indeed a region which prides itself on having quite a leftist political scene - Mytannion is probably at the centre of this scene being a hive of leftist thought in terms of economic theory, but also social theory - with it being known as one of the most liberal nations in all of Rushmore. This thought hasn't helped much evidently, as Mytannion is possibly also one of the poorest nations in all of Rushmore, with many citizens living in squalid conditions on the council estates which are ubiquitous with the green and orange stars that make up the Mytanar flag.

The Location.

Dyka - is basically nothing more than a sprawling overflow of the former university and the small village that provided for the royal family when they were in town. Now it has turned into a metropolitan town which has superb transport links with the rest of the island of Nasto and the rest of Mytannion. Dyka has its own international airport, located on the outskirts of the town which caters for both domestic travel and Rushmori travel. If you are not travelling to Dyka from another Rushmori nation then you will have to fly into Esca International or Alex Util Airport in Thessia and then get a connection flight to Dyka. You could always use the trusty train service we have in Mytannion too, with links from all across Nasto coming into Dyka and you also have the ability to travel from mainland Mytannion to Dyka too if you take the Trunca-Cizian Link Tunnel, which is a tunnel under the Namyt Strait (the body of water separating the mainland from the isle of Nasto), that connects Trunca - a city on the south-coast of Mytannion to Cizian - a port town on the north-eastern coast of Nasto. The whole town has been massively redeveloped in recent years, with the town centre being expanded so it can have some of the international brand names other nations enjoy gracing its' streets. There are now a whole lot of modern businesses and foreign investment has been almost tripled in the area - the whole town seems to have been constructed out of glass, steel and red brick now, with the majority of structures being modernised. Still, everything revolves around the university. If you live in Dyka, you're a Royals fan - there's no other choice really. As the town is a 'University Town', there are a number of pubs, clubs and bars that cater to your alcohol-consuming, bad dancing and general fun-having needs.

The Stadium.

Tiegemburk Park - is a rather modern stadium by Mytanar standards, with the majority of sports teams still using fifty or sixty year old stadiums which are derelict and crumbling. This stadium is in its' third year of use, with it being a rather safe construction - made of concrete and steel mostly. The sideline stands are interesting enough - with them having completely asymmetrical designs. One has a roof which is curved in design, higher in the centre and curving down at both ends - the other is a simple steep affair. It climbs diagonally upwards with no roof and no seats, it is all terraced on this one side. The other side is all-seated, standing out, with the golden colour of the seats giving it a suitably 'royal' feel. This sideline with terracing is reserved for the most passionate UAD fans who stand here and make the atmosphere 'bounce'. The endzone stands are both steep and symmetrical in design, one of which is seated (half of which is reserved for away fans, with a huge fence separating them from the UAD fans on the other side). The other is terraced and is another area of passionate support, where a drum beats away all game - almost setting the rhythm for Mikjel Ostgurn to lead his offense down the field. There is undersoil heating which is important as it keeps the snow that cripples Mytannion off the turf and means that no games have to be postponed. In general, the UAD fans make a whole lot of noise and are the perfect stereotypical Mytanar fan, they are loud, proud and follow the team everywhere. They wave their gold and navy or gold and white or even navy and white scarves wildly throughout the season and they have some of the wittiest and confrontational chants in the nation and probably the region and maybe even the world, they are volatile and flares are oft-seen, violence is never to be ruled out, either, sadly.

The Team.

    The Coaching Team.
UAD haven't lost any of their coaching staff from last season - something which they're extremely proud of, as many other teams chop and change at the first sign of failure - but the Royals have decided to try and stick with their coaching team that have brought them relative success in the NSCF. Rob Troxel, the head coach has been with this team for seven seasons - winning them four straight national championships from 1992-1995 (i.e. from 1992 until the time of writing), dragging them away from a slump where they had not managed to win them anything for a fair few years - something which UAD were not very pleased with. Troxel is famous within Mytannion for being an aggressive coach on both sides of the ball, with him favouring gunslinging quarterbacks and pacy receivers on offense and tough, turnover-generating blitz packages on defense. He is known for overriding his offensive and defensive coordinators and choosing riskier plays of his own, so when an error is made by the UAD team relating to a strange play-call - the blame usually lies with the head coach rather than his coordinators. Offensive Coordinator, Vaclav Treblik is a veteran of gridiron - having played for the Thessia Jets before becoming the offensive coordinator for his University (aye, he is a former student of UAD). He was a quarterback and so is another aggressive playcaller on offense, liking to call big pass-plays that gain yardage very quickly and with a monster quarterback like Mikjel Ostgurn being the signal-caller for this team, you cannot really blame him. He is not a fan of running the ball - and so, his running backs normally become slot receivers. This does not mean that he is ineffectual at calling run-plays, as he showed last season when Mikjel Ostgurn was injured - he was extremely good at calling running plays as Macio Ontedrigues was forced to take up position at QB and ended up handing off to Viktor Mujassen a whole lot. When Ostgurn is fully fit, however, Treblik thinks running the ball is tantamount to treason (which doesn't exist in Mytannion and so this comparison doesn't really work, but we hope you understand), as Ostgurn is quite simply the biggest talent at QB that Mytannion has ever produced. Our defensive coordinator, Wadislaw Resoek is a calming influence on Coach Troxel and this probably means that UAD wins a whole lot more games than they would if they did not have Resoek. This is because there are actually some plays in the defensive playbook that don't relate to trying to break the opposition's quarterback by forcing pressure onto him in the hope of an interception or fumble. Resoek is a good defensive coordinator, in that, he knows when to call a blitz and when to call a play where the team just drop into coverage - his actual play designs may not be the best you will ever see, though. For a full list of the University of Alzburg-Dyka coaching staff, see below:

    Coaching Staff
Role Name Age Duration of Time at UAD.
Head Coach: Rob Troxel 51 7 Seasons.
Assistant Coach: Tom Walker 41 3 Seasons.
Offensive Coordinator: Vaclav Treblik 52 9 Seasons.

Defensive Line Coach: Jacob Rembrandt 40 3 Seasons.
Special Teams Coaches: Tomas Danzig 42 3 Seasons.
    .......................Dan Wilkerson 40 3 Seasons.

    The Offense.
    Coordinator: Vaclav Treblik
    Base Formation: Pro set/splitback formation.

Led by senior quarterback Mikjel Ostgurn - this offense is well known for generating lots of points and also for generating lots of very big pass-plays, with the ball normally spiralling above defensive player's heads and ending up in the hands of one of our pacy wide receivers. This season the offense is possibly the strongest it has ever been in terms of the quarterback and the receiving corps that they have. However, it is significantly weaker for not having Viktor Mujassen in the team to take hand-offs at halfback. It is also inexperienced in the offensive line, with four sophomores making up the protection for Mikjel Ostgurn - who enjoys having a good pocket to pass from, even if he can make plays on his feet too. There are also a whole lot of players redshirting this season, which could be both good and bad - we may not have the talent we need right now, but at least we shall have it in future NSCF seasons. For example, a junior left guard - Thomas Dodds is redshirting. If UAD had him in the offensive line, it would look slightly stronger than it does now. For a comprehensive offensive team, depth chart and other information - see below:

    Key.
    Starters - Gold.

Graduated since previous season: Macio Ontedrigues (QB), Daran Miksovic (WR), Viktor Mujassen (HB), Bozidar Jukani (FB), Julek Jasinzki (TE), Kryzs Wieczorek (C), Marcin Zawadski (WR), Klimek Wojcechkurski (TE).
Redshirting for current season: Erritel Hikhrela (SR QB), Oscar Vavilov (FR WR), Zinovy Sozonov (FR WR), Emmanuel Seleznyov (FR TE), Anton Bazhenov (FR RB), Thomas Dodds (JR LG), Maxim Bodrov (FR RT).

As can be seen here, the team has lost their starting haflback. Viktor Mujassen is going to be replaced by Tomas Pamic, the Prime Minister's son, who is moving from fullback to halfback for this season. UAD have also lost Kryzs Wieczorek - the big centre who was snapping the ball for Mikjel Ostgurn every season since the young QB has been here and providing him with some outstanding blocking to give him the pocket he needs to select the best pass downfield, now Wieczorek has gone - sophomore understudy Frans Johansen has taken over, with two freshman centres behind him on the depth chart - if Johansen gets injured, we could be in trouble - and a lot of it. Vladislav Vinogradoff and Makar Abramoff both have potential - but they're both too inexperienced to slot straight into this o-line. Ostgurn has also lost his favourite target to pass the ball to. Klimek Wojcechkurski at tight-end has graduated and now Ostgurn will be passing to his good friend, Marijan Bilic who stands at 6'6 but isn't the most powerful player at the position. Only time will tell if Bilic is good enough to take over from Wojcechkurski. The other players who have graduated are all of little consequence really, Ontedrigues was Ostgurn's replacement and did fairly well in his absence last season - the other players were mostly replacements for the starters we still have in our team.

The players that have redshirted however, could have caused more problems in their choice to redshirt. Erritel Hikhrela - who would have been Mikjel Ostgurn's understudy for this season has taken up the option to redshirt in his senior year. This was probably a tactical decision, with input from both Coach Troxel and Vaclav Treblik which meant that UAD would have a good quarterback - who has experience to play in NSCF 6. Their next choice would have been to play a sophomore for NSCF 6, in the form of Jaromir Kudryashov who was the #2 rated quarterback recruit in the country. Ostgurn was given his chance as a freshman but he was an extremely special talent who already had developed passing skills, Kudryashov is brilliant at making plays on his feet - with him being a scrambling quarterback most of the time, but still needs to sharpen his passing arsenal. Kudryashov will be given a season to play under Ostgurn and will probably be used sparingly as a situational quarterback in short-yardage situations where a strong QB-run could be used to gain the first down. Then come some freshman receivers, a tight-end and a running back - which doesn't really matter. However, then, there is junior left guard Thomas Dodds. He could be used ahead of Ewout Moller (who is a huge talent, by the way), who could then be redshirted. This would then mean we'd have a more experienced o-line (Dodds was ever-present last season, not missing one game), and we'd also save Ewout Moller for next year when the rest of our line had gained more experience and would be more skilled overall. This could have been a tactical oversight by Coach Troxel. There is then freshman RT, Maxim Bodrov - who, whilst being a decent player - is at a position where we already have four players on the roster, so it was probably a good idea to redshirt him.

There is two positions the offense does not have too many players at - and that is at halfback and fullback. We only have two players at each position rather than the normal three. This means that if both Pamic and Voronkov are injured at HB and both Budin and Janecek are injured at FB - then we won't have any halfbacks or fullbacks to play in our splitback formation. This would probably lead to the team going to a no-huddle spread offense where Mikjel Ostgurn would have four wide receivers to aim at and a tight-end who normally will become another blocker, but occasionally will also carry on running to become an option for Ostgurn to pass to. So if all four players who play at halfback or fullback are injured, I would imagine that would be the tactic employed by offensive coordinator Vaclav Treblik. Here is the full offensive depth-chart:

    Offensive Depth Chart.

    The Defense.
    Coordinator: Wadislaw Resoek
    Base Formation: 4-3 Defense.

Some of the players on this defense are the probably what the dream of a defensive coordinator would be like. Ball-hawking cornerbacks who are just as good at blitzing the opposition's QB (come on down, Serhij Lokaj!). Players at both FS and SS that can do the same in Jackson Golding and Esko Hauta-Aho and a defensive line that seems to have a shared, collective, personal hatred of every single other team's quarterback. The only weaknesses on this team are probably the outside linebackers that don't really have the speed or power to keep-up with tight-ends, or tackle pacy running backs. The middle linebacker, Ragnar Simmundsson is actually a very good talent - who is used as a hybrid between an extra player at safety and a ball-hawking linebacker, he's a 'spur' apparently. He's quick, too - and so can be used as a player that can get to running backs that are trying to get around the edge. Anyway, here's a full list of defensive talent:

Graduated since previous season: John Krnjovsek (CB), Bajram Hukic (CB), Milo Hostern (MLB), Wojtek Adamski (DT), Milic Strojkik (DE).
Redshirting for current season: Ernest Andreeff (FR DT), Robert Gorbunov (FR DE), Johnson van Eekeren (SO LOLB), Ali Kuberski (JR ROLB) Matia Drazumeric (SR FS).

UAD fans have lost one of their favourite sons in the form of defensive tackle, Wojtek Adamski. A huge poster of 'the monster' has adorned the wall of one of the endzone stands since its' construction and it is sad that Adamski has graduated and that he is no longer a part of the team that he had so much influence on. If he played well, this defense played well - pretty much sums the thing up, it was the regularity with which he played well which made him a hero to UAD fans. Adamski is unsure as to whether or not he'll enter the MFL draft or if he wants to join the coaching staff at UAD itself, he's young - but he knows this defense inside and out, which means he could be a huge help to the team in bringing on good recruits and making them great players. We have also lost our two back-up cornerbacks in Krnjovsek and Hukic, which meant we needed to discover who would be our new back-ups in this position and who would take over from the duo of Didmar and Lokaj who both graduate this year. Milo Hostern was at one point our first choice middle linebacker, but with the discovery of Ragnar Simmundsson - he was pushed out of the picture in his senior year and now has graduated. Finally, Milic Strojkik has graduated - the DE was a long-time back-up who got a sprinkling of appearances across his college career, he's managed to get a degree in Rushmori Politics - a degree that UAD are well known for providing students with, congratulations go to him.

This season, UAD are redshirting five players on the defensive side of the ball. First on this list is Ernest Andreeff, a freshman defensive tackle - who could have been better used this season as a replacement for Eustachy Rutkowski - as we only have Jerold Frashure behind him on the depth chart, so if they both were to be injured - we could be left in a bit of a mire trying to replace them. If only Wojtek Adamski hadn't graduated, hey? We'd not have this problem at all! There is then Robert Gorbunov, another freshman - who is this time a defensive end. Again, we only have two players at both left and right defensive end on the depth chart. This could be problematic if both our first choice and second string players at these positions were to become injured. Then comes Johnson van Eekeren, a sophomore left outside linebacker who filled in for Mijo Vrenko who was injured through a lot of last season. This means that van Eekeren has good experience and once again, could have been a player we could have used this season. Instead, the coaching team have made the decision to redshirt him and use senior Mijo Vrenko with redshirt junior Vojo Kreuzer playing as his understudy for this year. We made the same decision with junior right outside linebacker, Ali Kuberski. Kuberski has been a decent player over his first two seasons for the Royals, even if he hasn't played too much. He still has good experience playing as a back-up to Vasko Veronek. Veronek isn't the best ROLB ever, but he'll play this season and will possibly become a back-up to Yaroslav Bocharov next season - Bocharov being an extremely talented freshman. If he gains height and weight over this season he'll be hard to compete against at the ROLB position. Finally, we have Matia Drazumeric, a senior free safety sitting out the season. His career has been marred by injuries and he's going to use this season to get fully fit to perhaps either takeover from Jackson Golding next season or play as his back-up. The Citiz FS, Golding, is talented in his own right - but it may be worth playing Drazumeric ahead of him purely because of their comparitive physical stats, even if it is for only one season.

We are weakened in a few positions due to a few defensive line graduations. At left defensive end we only have two players on a depth chart where there would normally be three players. Fadi Pereira and Theo Abramov are at left DE, what would happen if both were to be injured? That is the real question. We have a similar situation on the other side at right DE. If both Laurent Vézeau and Modest Kryukov became injured what would we do? These are questions our coaching staff will need to answer over the course of the season - if nothing is done about it and this is then a problem, fans will begin to call for Troxel's head. He's the one at the top of the team after all. We also have a slight problem at left defensive tackle. Whilst we have a strong first choice player there in Eustachy Rutkowski and a decent back-up in Jerold Frashure, if both were injured - then we would not have anyone to replace them, which could leave us in trouble. Anyway, here's a full depth chart:

    Defensive Depth Chart.

    Position 1 2 3
Left Defensive End Fadi Pereira Theo Abramov
Left Defensive Tackle Eustachy Rutkowski Jerold Frashure

    Special Teams.
    Coordinators: Tomas Danzig/Dan Wilkerson.

Well, the Royals haven't really lost anything special in their special teams this season. Only one player has graduated, the punter Imri Salajaster - and even though he was very talented and extremely good at punting for field position, we may have found better players in our new recruits. We have two freshman punters in the squad, it isn't the most important position, but it can decide the course of a game - so this could have some impact, but it is unlikely that it will be a big one. We also have a freshman kick-off and punt returner on our books and he can run a 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds, with a bit of work - this could be brought down to 4.5 or 4.4 - that sort of pace will be valued massively and he could be able to make huge plays on kick-offs, perhaps even getting a few returns over his UAD career. He could be converted into a wide receiver, running back or cornerback too, in the future - which could be an interesting tactic that the coaching team may well employ and explore. So, here's the list of special teams players for this season:

    # Name Position Height Weight Year Notes
0 Chariton Bogdanov LS 6-2 220 JR Transfer Student
    4 Esperij Geberec K 5-7 175 SR
    12 Tevz Gnedic K 5-10 187 SR
    14 Armen Kirillov P 5-11 189 FR
    21 Roland Mironov P 5-9 170 FR
    99 Avdei Boholyubov KR/PR 5-10 202 FR

    Key.
    Redshirts - Red.

We still have our clutch kicker, Esperij Geberec - now in his senior year and looking to kick more points than ever before. We also have a decent back-up for him in the form of long-time second choice Tevz Gnedic, who has been revealed as a bit of a long-distance specialist in the pre-season training camps. We have two new punters who will be competing for the #1 spot on the depth chart and a two new additions to the Royals team. For the first time ever we have a long snapper in the form of Junior transfer student Chariton Bogdanov (we would normally just have used our centre for snapping the ball on punts etc), there shouldn't be too much spotlight on that though - but there could be a bit on Avdei Boholyubov, who is responsible for returning kick-offs and punts to a respectable point so that Mikjel Ostgurn doesn't need to continuously start from his own 1-yard line on every drive - which was a regular occurrence last season. Here is the special teams depth chart:

    Special Teams Depth Chart.

    Position 1 2
    Kicker Esperij Geberec Tevz Gnedic
    Punter Armen Kirillov Roland Mironov
    Long Snapper Chariton Bogdanov
    Kick/Punt Returner Avdei Boholyubov

And that, UAD fans - is your NSCF 5, University of Alzburg-Dyka Royals roster!

Miscellaneous.

Team Honours:
    • Mytanar National Collegiate Football Championship x 10
    • MNCF EN-8 Conference x 25
    • NSCF Sequoia Conference x 1

The team is the most successful within Mytanar borders, winning the National Championship 10 times in the history of the MNCF. They have also won the EN-8 Conference 25 times now. They also won the Sequoia Conference for the first time in their three-year stint in the NSCF, the Royals are hoping to make it their second Conference Championship in four seasons this year - as they have a very strong roster and have a seriously re-aligned conference. Despite this amount of success, UAD have only ever managed to win one single play-off game in the NSCF. This is a record which the Royals are not at all proud of and wish to improve this year. Mikjel Ostgurn is making it his own personal mission to add to his NSCF 3 Most Outstanding Player award with an NSCF Championship in his senior year - and with a strong supporting cast in NSCF 5, he could well do it. As the fans would say:

"Go you Royals, go!"

SCOTT CITY UNIVERSITY BRONCOS

The Broncos, reigning Big Eight Conference Champions, and Darmeni National Champions, are returning for their third season in NSCF. With the graduation of many of the seniors, almost all positions will have brand new starters, so it'll be interesting to see how the season pans out.

Offense
With Scott Perry graduated and focusing mainly on the National Team and his pro career, it'll be up to Roman Gabriel to lead the Broncos offense. Helping him will be Running Backs Brady Keys and Pat Studstill, and Full Back Jim Taylor, all located in the backfield. With the departure of Perry, Coaches Shell and Shula are returning towards the ground game that has worked so well for SCU in the past. Terrell Owens and Luke Swan will see very little of the ball, while Jeremy Shockey will most likely lead the team in receptions. The offensive line has lost quite a bit of size from last season, with the average weith of the O'line being 258.6lbs, as compaired to 286.4lbs from last season.

Defense
The Defensive Line is a bit undersized, but Louis Nzegwu makes up for his size with his speed and agility. The Linebackers will be lead by Na'il Diggs, who's presence is enough to stop any teams rushing game. Cornerbacks Eugene Daniel and Pat Fischer will be looking to shut down any passing attacks that may present themselves to the Broncos, as will Safties Antonio Fenelus and Bennie Blades.

Special Teams
Josh Cribbs is not the best return man in the nation, but he hangs on to the ball and makes sure SCU start at at least the 20, rarely ever being tackled inside the twenty. Kevin Butler will see his first taste of action as kicker this season, but if his performance in High School can be repeated in College, SCU should be looking at three solid years of good kicking. Punter Mike Lazecki had an average season last season, and Coach Dussault will need to help improve his directional kicking.

Coaching
Don Shula will continue to use Darmen's Wishbone attack, while Marty Schottenheimer will continue to utilise the 4-4. Jacques Dussault has a pretty easy job, but he's known to have several tricks up his sleve. Darrel Davis and Don Matthews will help Shula in coaching the offense. Art Shell will continue to be SCU's head coach for a third season.

A narrow, overtime defeat to one of your biggest rivals in what is effectively the world championship of collegiate gridiron isn't easy to take, right? Wrong. Well, if you're one of the University of Utica's Tigers, anyway. What probably hurt the most for the Tigers was coming so agonisingly close to being three-time NSCF champions, but Mike Zampese's men rallied well, despite the loss of a few key players. The pain became easier to bear after they dominated Callisto University Lynx -- last season's surprise package in OCGL -- in a thirty point Championship win (the second largest margin of victory in OCGL Championship games) to reclaim the national championship after three years parted from it.

Losing Karim Ouaddou impacted the Tigers' game most noticeably on offense, as Luke Saint initially struggled to form a strong rapport with Jermaine Nestor, while the loss of Darrius Mallory in the Tigers' secondary forced Hi'ro Manaka'li to perhaps up his game. While Nestor's numbers in OCGL were hardly spectacular, Manaka'li has certainly lived up to his reputation as the successor to Tigers legend Rigo Kopumava. Surprisingly, his regular partner after the halfway point of the season was sophomore cornerback Leon Calk. Calk's decision to snub his local college, Kyoshiku, to join their hated rivals the Tigers last season was seen as a mistake when the Steel Wolves claimed a tenth OCGL Championship -- at the expense of Utica -- at the end of Calk's freshman year. The tenacious defensive back let his actions speak for him in the orange and black of the Tubrissian college, however; 70 tackles, 4 interceptions, 2 defensive touchdowns and 2 returning touchdowns speak loudly, as he ousted Isaac Soliai from the starting lineup and Utica cruised to another divisional title, enroute to winning their tenth OCGL Championship.

The Tigers' run defense could still use work, but not only has the emergence of Calk given the secondary a substantial boost, but the pass rush looks solid too. Cameron Hunter stepped out of the sizeable shadow of Saul Abraham -- who graduated after the end of the last NSCF season -- to become the Tigers' leading pass-rusher with nine sacks to add to his thirteen tackles for loss in OCGL this past season. On the other side of the defensive line, the Mytanar Christian Thendorfer is showing signs of fulfilling his immense potential, picking up two sacks and six tackles for loss in only his second year. Mike Zampese's illness last season led many to believe he may not return for the fifth season of NSCF, but he insists he still has work to do in Utica "even if it kills me". The magic number back home is now eleven, and on the Tigers' form in OCGL, it would be hard to bet against them reaching it next year. In the meantime, a third NSCF title is firmly in their sights, as Luke Saint looks to become the most successful quarterback in Tigers' history. With much of his supporting cast returning, or being replaced by players of near equal quality, the offense still looks fearsome. Key to Saint's -- and by extension, Utica's -- success this season will be his returning receiver duo of Alves and North, who exceeded expectation last year with almost 200 catches and over 2,500 receiving yards between them. Daniel Corsey's hints of a runningback-by-committee system, or possibly fielding split backs, has been met with mixed response in Utica. Testing the system in OCGL, it found success against the likes of Kart Hago and Papyrum -- who aren't known for a strong run defense -- but came up short against the likes of Burningham, whose hard-nosed defense is often cited as one of a few "measuring sticks" by which great offenses are tested. Such mixed fortune may see Corsey shelve the idea in NSCF for the most part, despite the Tigers possessing great depth at runningback with Jennings, Jackson and Barker being joined by highly elusive freshman Drake Turnbull. Jennings rushed for over 1,700 yards in NSCF last season -- despite sharing carries with Quentin Jackson to an extent -- suggesting he could be the only the second runningback to notch up a 2,000 yard season since Rashad Jackson, and that's something that will certainly be on Corsey's mind as he devises his gameplans this season.

If there is a weakness in the Tigers' roster this season, its a near-frightening lack of depth in the offensive line. In the Woodlands conference, teams generally possess strong pass rushes, in order to combat the largely aerial offensive tendencies of the conference's teams. If Saint's protection doesn't hold up, the former NSCF Offensive Player of the Year will struggle to repeat previous seasons' performances. By extension, the offense will falter, as the likes of Jennings and Jackson will be starved of openings. Marek Vicha is an outstanding prospect, and could dislodge Richardson from the starting role as the season progresses, while Okafor is a solid backup at center. Outside those two, though... the Tigers could face problems if hit with a few injuries early on. The receiving corps received no additions this season either, oddly enough, though its quality is unquestioned. The depth at runningback is sufficient for Corsey to consider alternate options on offense, too, so the questions on offense are largely limited to the line. And rightly so.

On the flipside, Anthony Channa's impact on the Tigers' defense has been remarkable. The depth of the secondary is oustanding, with Soliai and Tevaseu a backup duo that would rival many teams' starting pair at cornerback. Guillermo Ramirez is joined by the surprisingly solid Chad Howell -- 22 tackles and one interception in OCGL this past season after riding pine for most of the past two years -- at safety, with Staines and McKenzie capable deputies. Howell in particular has come in for praise in Osarius for his intelligent approach, and ability to read the game, while Ramirez remains a standout for the Tigers when defending against the run. Even the linebackers are looking frightening now, after not traditionally being of much concern to rival teams. The starting trio of Massuso, Raiola and Manuwai are a triple-threat with tons of experience (Massuso is a senior, the other two juniors) that would give cause for concern to all but the best runningbacks in the league, while their backups -- Nicholson, Rodgers and Carthy -- have all shown promise. Carthy in particular is tipped to be named as a defensive captain next season when Massuso graduates, and is arguably more capable of fulfilling Massuso's role in Channa's proposed -- and half-implemented -- Tampa 2 defensive strategy. Also integral to that scheme would be Raiola and his backup Rodgers, as both possess excellent tackling skills. Brandon Rodgers' talent is perhaps overlooked because he's unfortunate enough to have to compete for a starting berth with one of the Tubrissian division's leading tacklers in Samson Raiola, but when Raiola missed four games last year in OCGL, his absence went largely unnoticed. Who replaced him? Rodgers. In an odd twist of fate, it seems as though the aspect of the Tigers roster that is most frightening may actually be the defense. Particularly if you're counting on airing it out.

Bobcat Season Preview

Jack Urban ran into his office, short of breath, and with a frazzled look on his face as he quickly sat down at his desk for our interview. I expected that from Urban, as it was the opening day of training camp for the upcoming season, his 4th as Head Coach and Bucktown’s 2nd in the NSCF. His office looked like a bomb had gone off and destroyed a filing cabinet, so much so that his assistant had to move a stack of papers from the chair I sat in. When I asked him about that stack, he didn’t seem worried, “It was just some scouting from my first season here, I think that was 3 years ago. Its not important anymore, not even sure why I still have it, almost all of those players have moved on.”

Last season ended with a playoff shutout loss to Colden, which followed a 5 game win streak, beating both teams in the Championship game along the way. So this season, they face an uphill battle trying to qualify for the playoffs again. That shouldn’t be hard for a team that returns all but one starter on both sides of the ball, and brought in a solid recruiting class. The biggest recruit brought it, both physically and impact-wise, is Offensive Tackle Todd Martin, who coach Urban has indicated will be in the starting lineup come opening day. There were only 5 seniors on last years squad, but this team will be coming in with 6 losses to the team; Junior Tackle Jim Ipson asked to be released from his scholarship as he plans to transfer to another college. This came as a shock for Urban as Jim had been a big reason the team was able to sign Erik Ipson, Jim’s younger brother. According to one source close to the Ipson family, Jim didn’t feel he was given enough opportunity to earn a starting position, and with the signing of Todd Martin, he wanted to seek a spot on another team. “Jim is a smart kid, it is a shame to see him go. We felt he was going to be a big contributor this season, but he wanted to see how he could do with another team, so we saw no reason to not allow him to do so,” Coach Urban remarked during a press conference this summer.

This season we will be seeing a high powered offense get even better, with the return of Tim Smith and Jake Wilson from injuries. Smith, who is coming back after a knee injury in the second game of last season, received word this spring that he would be allowed to return for a 5th year because of the injury. Jake Wilson returns under-center after breaking his throwing hand, and he is throwing harder than before. Wilson has had more time to learn this offense, and with the addition of QB Coach Terrance Paine, who coached Wilson at Arcatean Coast, I expect that this offense will become even better, and might be towards the top of the Woodlands Conference. Defense, which isn’t the focus of Urban, looks to be even better as well.

Last January, Van Heard was celebrating his team’s victory in the Arcatean National Junior College Championship game when he got some very bad news, the College of Arts and Sciences would be closing. CAS had been in the news lately due to the mismanagement of the school, but coach Heard was unaware the school was in threat of being shut down. The ANJC allowed CAS players to transfer to other schools without penalty, but that still left Heard and his staff without jobs. Luckily for Heard, and his D-Coordinator, Robert Wayne, Bucktown was still looking for position coaches. Heard will be coaching the Defensive line, and Wayne is the new Linebackers coach, bringing over 35 years of coaching experience between them to the defensive side of the ball. Chris Thompson also added a Defensive back coach, Jon Box, from Red Mountain Junior College; Box also spent time ANFL, but decided he wanted to pursue coaching over playing.

There will also many additions on the offensive side of the ball. Jonas Wood made some key hires, adding some much needed experience along the line and in the backfield. The first position coach made by the Bobcats, was Cal Burgess, the offensive line coach. When this was announced, many fans were confused, Burgess was a former ANFL all star, and was coaching there as well. “Coaching professionals is very different, and I’m not sure I was cut out for it. At the college level, these kids are playing for the love of the game, not money. Its a challenge, but that is what I wanted,” Burgess claimed. The next hire made me scratch my head when I found out, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Mike Libbey, who coached High School, is the Running Backs Coach. Most fans were hoping for a big name hire for this position, but to most this was anything but that. Libbey, who coached current ANFL MVP Marvin Olsen when he was a student at Greenleaf West, is known among other high school coaches for his running offense. Former Bobcat standout, Terrance Paine, was hired away from Arcatean Coast. The last position coach, Wide Receivers, the Bobcats didn’t have to look far. Chris Potter held a retirement press conference only 2 days before being named the WR coach at Bucktown, thanks to his good friend, Jack Urban. They not only played high school football together, for a season they were on the same ANFL team.

The Bobcats are poised to have a better season, but in the Woodlands Conference, that could proves to be difficult. Luckily for the Bobcats, this season there will be out of conference games, which could allow the Bobcats to have up to three more wins. The Bobcats are ranked 12th in Pre-Season rankings, which normally would be good, however, in the 6 team Woodlands, they are the 5th ranked team. Its no surprise that U of Ark and Utica sit at the top at 1 and 2, respectively, Frbiba State is sitting at #9, Touffer at 11, Bucktown at 12, and Jagoza at 16th. My prediction for the season? Bobcats fight to make it into the Top 10, finish 9-4.

Ducks Scrape Past Inmortales

Finn Mayrhofer's gut reaction: He flunked his first career start.

"Umm, I probably failed this test today," Mayrhofer said after No. 5 Riversburg-Madison's tougher than expected 6-0 victory over the stubborn Telle-Belle Universidad de Arte y Ciencia Inmortales on Tuesday. "I'd say, eh, around a D, maybe."

As the sophomore quarterback kept talking, he eased up on himself. Although his interception nearly led to Telle-Belle's best scoring opportunity, he did pass the ball well and drove his team to two field-goal opportunities. "I just think a win's a win and it's something I have to learn to enjoy," Mayrhofer said. "There's things that I'm worried about and things that I'm focused on that I didn't do so well. "I'll give it a C-minus, being positive."

Mayrhofer was 17 for 26 for 129 yards. Coach Kyrill Rosenboom noted that Mayrhofer made some nice throws in the second half, and said there was plenty of room for improvement. "You grow from adversity," Rosenboom said. "You don't like going through it, but you grow from it."

Safety Splinter Gerritse had an end zone interception for the Ducks, who were whipped by the Wyverns in their second playoff game last season and they again had their struggles on both sides of the ball in 90-degree heat. Three of their first four possessions ended quickly with punts for an offense that averaged 30 points last season, and Telle-Belle moved the ball with some success.

"We played below par today," defensive end Joseph De Lissa said. "We might have made a lot of good stops but it's going to take alot more to beat teams like Utica and FSU."

Gerritse's pickoff halted a 67-yard drive near the end of the first half with RMU up 3-0.

"The momentum shift stuns you," said the first-year Telle-Belle coach. "Kind of like a boxer, you get that uppercut but you don't go down."

RMU hurt itself with 81 yards on nine penalties, and has a short week ahead with the next game Thursday night at Alzburg-Dyka which could already prove to be the title decider. "I thought we just made more first-game mistakes than we've had for a long time," Rosenboom said. "We have to get better, and we've got to do it pretty fast."

"We moved the ball well," running back Tapani Välimaa said. "We just have to finish, have to score."

RMU, which had been around a 20-point favorite, answered on the first play of the fourth quarter. Hudson Swinburne's 10-yard catch set up Vladimir de Knegt's 45 yard field goal to put the Ducks up by 6 points.

Telle-Belle CB #1's interception and 5-yard return of Mayrhofer's overthrown pass gave Telle-Belle possession at the RMU 19 but they could do nothing with it. Down by 6, Telle-Belle ran out of downs at the RMU 30 midway through the fourth quarter. Tjipke Breeuwer recovered the Inmortales Qb's fumble with 1:49 left.

Two RMU defensive players left with injuries. Linebacker Steijn Elands sustained a high left ankle sprain in the first quarter, which could sideline him for a month, and end Cees Jensen has a dislocated left elbow that'll keep him out for at least one game.

Vladimir de Knegt's 33 yard field-goal up the middle capped a 76-yard drive late in the first quarter. The Inmortales struggled on the kicking game, with Telle-Belle Kicker wide left on a 41-yard field goal attempt in the first half and his second field goal was blocked. It was the first game for the Telle-Belle Kicker, a sophomore.
