Postby Ancharmunn » Thu Mar 15, 2012 3:08 pm

The Gaelic Football World Cup

The first phase of the competition sees the eighteen teams drawn into three groups of six as shown below. Teams will play each other once in the group stages. Tiebreakers used in the group stage if necessary will, in order, be: head-to-head points, head-to-head score difference, score difference, scores for and finally a coin toss (or the drawing of lots for a three or more way tie).

What is Gaelic football

Gaelic football is a sport originating from and primarily played in Ireland. The aim is to score more points than the opposition. Each team defends a H-shaped goal at either end of the pitch. If a team manages to get the ball over the bar and between the posts of their opponents goal they score a single point, should they get the ball between the post and below the bar a goal is scored. Goals are worth three points. Scores in Gaelic football are present in the following format, 2-10, where 2 would mean two goals had been scored and 10 points had been scored. This effectively adds up to sixteen points. A brief explanation of the sport can be found here, or as ever Wikipedia can be consulted for a more in depth description. For a visual idea this youtube video is worth a watch.

Squads (or rosters if you prefer) should be posted in here. They should include a list of players you are sending. For those unsure of positions see here. You may also want to include an RP permissions guide in order to assist fellow RPers. An example template is shown below.

The Babbage Islands
Fourth Gaelic Football World Cup Squad

The Babbage Islands have a six-team professional league in so-called "compromise" or "international" rules play, but seldom play the Gaelic game in its pure form except at international festivals. This led to a disastrous world debut at the second World Cup, where the side were swept in six matches. At the third Cup, they had improved to post a winning record but failed of advancement on tiebreaks.

The Bumblebees have a world championship of the related Australian rules game to their credit, and ought not be underestimated. But they do miss their mark…

National Journal
Gaelic Football World Cup opens with Saugeais victory
Mason on form as pair of goals down the hosts

Many in the country said that Gaelic football would never return, after dismal showing from the 2nd World Cup and complete withdrawal from the 3rd. After a several year hiatus, the announcement of Saugeais participation in the 4th Gaelic Football World Cup came as quite a shock to the public. There was barely any knowledge of training or a national team before the draw, which saw Saugeais grouped with the hosts, Ancharmunn, and fellow Rushmori nation Polar Islandstates. With many debut teams coming into the World Cup, the little Gaelic Football fans there are in the country expressed their disdain for being drawn with such a strong Gaelic Footballing nation. "I'd much rather be with a group of nobodies than to be with Ancharmunn," claimed one fan.

But nevertheless, after the draw was announced, President of the SGFA and head coach of the national team, Samuel Backus, officially released the national team roster, citing many Sorthern Northland expatriates. "Without a land or a team they can call home, I'm willing give these talented men a chance to play for their new home," stated Backus in a press conference. While the decision was met with some shock, the general consensus was that these players would help train the team in the ways of the game as well.

Which leads us to yesterday, where the opening match of the tournament took place, as Saugeais took on Ancharmunn. Saugeais got off to a slow start, scoring 5 points to Ancharmunn's 9 in the first half. The team lacked focus, committing fouls and double dribbling the ball at times, with Anderson Frank being the prominent offender, as he was yellow carded for tripping an opponent. "Half time was were I had to test their character," said Mr. Backus. "I let them know that while Ancharmunn is one of the better teams in the world today, [Saugeais] were staying with them. Only 4 points separated us, and we could take the lead with a few well timed plays" And that they did. As the whistle blew to start the second half, Saugeais played noticeably better than in the first. In the 45th minute, Larrie Mason recorded the first goal for the team, putting the score at 1-11 (14) to Ancharmunn's 0-11 (11). After a few more punched points, Mason capped a good day's performance by netting his second goal in the 58th minute to give us our final score. "It was a delightful first match, and against the hosts I couldn't have been more proud of my boys," said Mr. Backus after the match.

Hi! This is Kathy Maclaren again. I promised you a post about the Gaelic football world cup, and here it is.

Gaelic football is one of two codes that were used to derive the international rules game we're familiar with here in the islands. In most of the world Gaelic football is purely amateur, and our professionals are met with a certain distrust. But amateur ≠ unskilled! Our team lost all six matches the first time we tried this, and it wasn't just because the rules are a bit different.

The people who know say that we've got a much better team this time round, and the first result seems to say so too. We beat Polar Islandstates, another land that plays much better association football than some other brands, by a pretty convincing 3-18 to 0-4. Andrés Hallgrímsson kicked two of our three goals, and Carson Price put in a long shot for our third. Bastian Engel made one save for us all day as we kept the play in the offensive half.

Our next match is against UCW Ayrshire, also winners in the first round by a healthy margin. Go Bumblebees!

John Smiths Reports ...

Arghh,I thought I was suppose to report for Association Football but erm, they assigned me to the Fourth Gaelic Football World Cup too,so I guess I have to do
this report, today our boys best Western Cuba 26-3 in the first match and currently sits at the first place spot.I think we need to do a bit of explaining in
the Mapletish-Western Cuba sports rivalry, this mini-rivalry began in the Beach Cup,the Beach Soccer World Cup.It was later transferred over to the Quall
Cup when Mapletish Lions XII went to Western Cuba for the 3rd Quall Cup.Manus Reagan managed to perform every well in the first match today scoring
a few goals for Mapletish today.

Having had little international Gaelic Football experience and only a small league for Gaelic Football clubs,Mapletish have got little experience before
the debut into the Gaelic Football World Cup.With an average of only 2,500 fans attending Gaelic Football matches in Mapletish compared to the
average of 51,250 fans attending the Mapletish Premier League football matches, there is really a huge difference between Association Football and
Gaelic Football. The effort to promote Gaelic Football to the nation is quite a halfway success as the national team played out a first match victory which
would encourage more people to watch the Free-To-Air Gaelic Football World Cup matches provided by Sports@Mapletia.

Beningrad rivalries resurface in Gaelic Football World Cup

All-Beningrad Cup finals between Rathbruree and Avonross came to be the stuff of legends. Clashes that at times eclipsed that of the All-Sorthern Northland finals in the must watch events of Sorthern Gaelic football. The games were hard, fast, rough yet skilful, seventy minutes of action packed adrenalin. They were not merely matches, but full blooded battles between heated rivals. Yet such matches were only a recent phenomenon, born largely out personal rivalries between players such as Edan Ó Meadhra, Edmond Ó Ceallacháin, Finnseach Ó Urthaile and Séamus Ó Dálaigh.

Such clashes are of course no more. The All-Beningrad Cup is consigned to history. The Rathbruree and Avonross clubs now as much a thing of the past as the Sorthern nation which those clubs and that competition now is. When that nation collapsed those who were able to escape went their own ways, the likes of Ó Meadhra and Ó Ceallacháin ended up in Saugais whilst Ó Urthaile and Ó Dálaigh made their way to Ancharmunn. The two pairs surely couldn't have expected their paths to cross again.

Yet at McGillycuddy Park for the opener of the Gaelic Football World Cup the four were once again on the same pitch. The former Rathbruree pair now in the colours of Saugeais, Avonross replaced by Ancharmunn. The years since they last faced each other may now be few, but the rivalry between certainly hadn't diminished. That much could be told from an early and strong tackle from Ó Dálaigh on Ó Ceallacháin. It was a tackle strong enough to draw an early yellow card from the referee, perhaps in an attempt to lay down an early marker. In a scrappy opening Ó Meadhra and Ó Ceallacháin would return the hits on their opponents, enough though that the play of the Saugeais team was disjointed by it whilst Ancharmunn led by Ó Urthaile and Ó Dálaigh racked up frees to lead 0-09 – 0-05 at half-time.

For those who had been witness to the All-Beningrad battles much of the break was spent reminiscent about them. One particular match was repeatedly brought up. In a final in which Avonross had been strong favourites they had gone into half time with a 1-08 – 0-03 lead, a huge swagger and the green and gold ribbons of their colours already being tied to the trophy. Ó Meadhra and Ó Ceallacháin however appeared to take exception to this however and Rathbruree led by the pair of them would go on to score a last minute goal to claim a famous 2-12 – 1-14 victory. The match quickly entered folklore and was widely considered the greatest comeback in Sorthern history.

Saugeais' second half performance against Ancharmunn may not have been of the same quality as Rathbruree's all those years ago, but for many it bore many similarities. What differed though was that whilst the two players played a key role for Saugeais, they were left only to create with the scoring largely being achieved by others. Larrie Mason proved a star showing scoring 2-01, both his goals coming off the back off some smooth interchanging between the full forward line whilst Keefe Ó Donndubháin contributed with 0-05. Edmond Ó Ceallacháin's 0-03 all came from frees, each won following fouls of an ever increasing level of frustration drawn out from Séamus Ó Dálaigh.

For the former Rathbruree pair then it perhaps wasn't one of their vintage displays from days gone by, but it was still a more than competent one and one that resulted in a comprehensive victory for their team. Their team now may no longer be Rathbruree, and their foes no longer Avonross, but the result they helped achieved was none the less one to be savoured. Just like the victories of old over their greatest rivals.
I'm not on the Greenwich Meridian so my time is a few seconds behind. Bear that in mind.

RWBC One
Gaelic Football World Cup

Waspeaters' entry on the international Gaelic Football scene has, after an admittedly shaky start, been going rather well. Although the Yellowcoats lost their very first game to Itailian Mafias, it appears as if their tournament is swinging back to the Waspeaterian corner.

In an uncharacteristically good performance, we managed to struggle through and defeat Western Cuba 0-4, 0-22, which we're told isn't actually too bad. We managed to get hold of Man-of-the-Match Colin Pigeon, who performed superbly: "Well, I think we're all a bit dazed about all this. We only really came here for a bit of a holiday, and to actually win is fantastic."

So what now for the valiant victors? The win against Western Cuba puts us into third place, and with three games to go a Waspeaterian prescence outside the group stages is possible, if unlikely. For the few Gaelic Football fans dedicated enough to come over to Ancharmunn, however, this one victory has been a pleasant surprise, and the sounds of Waspeaterian revelry will no doubt fill the streets tonight.

appearance in the Gaelic Football scene internationally. This time Mapletish managed a 8-3 win over Vantelira an impressing showing
again and they are shown the first place spot with 53 points scored and 9 points against and 4 points earned.A big WOW,as Mapletish

Sure, I'm disappointed that we won't play for the world championship of Babbage football. But I'll pull for Vettrera even if they won't be popular around here. They beat us not once, but twice, and both times they won by significant margins. They've earned everything they get, which might be the whole bag of marbles.

But the Gaelic Football World Cup will keep me out of a funk, for sure. The biggest game of qualifying starts in a few hours with an undefeated Bumblebee squad facing an undefeated Saugeais. Each team has averaged 24 points a game, and given up 6 (Babbage) or 6.33 (Saugeais). On form it's an even match, none better.

One nice thing about Gaelic for a spectator is that the numbers on each player actually tell you what they do. You see that with some association sides, some rugby sides, and in gridiron (but their system is mind-bending). But the trend is away from it; it's never been part of Babbage code which has discouraged specialities and celebrates two-way play.

So I can admire #13 for whatever reasons I want to, and there are many good ones, and also know that he's in our front line on the right side. "Right full forward." And the other team uses the same methods. Now, there are some confusing features, like the custom of reporting scores as goals-hyphen-points and not always giving the total score! Sure, it's easy to multiply the first number by three and add, but not intuitive. It also looks weird when the team with the most goals loses, which can happen!

Chronowire's broadcasting the match, and I'll be glued to the televideo.

Saugeais Sports Briefs
Saugeains kick their way into Semis

I do not know what to say, ladies and gentlemen. The Saugeais Gaelic Football team has defied all the odds for an up and coming national side. They swept through the group stage, taking out heavily favored hosts Ancharmunn in the process and blowing by The Babbage Islands, who were the other qualifiers from the group. Larrie Mason has accounted for 7 of the 11 goals scored during the qualifying round, with Edmond Ó Ceallacháin adding 3 more to the total.

During the match against Unitopolis, Ó Ceallacháin added another goal and 5 points, picking man of the match and helping Saugeais to victory, 2-15 to 0-12. Mason and Morley Desjardins each added 4 points each, and Keefe Ó Donndubháin rounded out the scoring with a goal and 2 points. The defense of the Saugeain back line kept Unitopolis to just 3 points in the first half, but quickly the fatigue of running up and down the pitch took its toll on the player, who have not been well conditioned for this match. The keeper, Étienne Ó Brádaigh, did succeed in blocking all shots that went his way, but after the match he claimed "The defenders in front of me need to make sure the opponents don't reach me. It was a good workout, but sometimes I want to have an easy day in front of the net."

Saugeais will be taking on hosts Ancharmunn in the semis, who were the very last team entered into the playoffs, by way of third place margins. The match will take place at McGillycuddy Park in the capital, Ballyfeeaknock, which will most certainly feature a biased crowd of 53,000 screaming, heckling Charmunnry. Saugeais will have to bring there A game again if they want to beat the hosts one more time to advance to the finals, where either Waspeaters or familiar foes The Babbage Islands await.

Well, if you've been following the Gaelic football World Cup at all you know that our Bumblebees are one win away from the final and a possible rematch with unbeaten Saugeais, who handed us our only loss.

First off, though, we have to get past Waspeaters. That's right, Bumblebees and Waspeaters. {Insert favoured insect-joke here.} They've had a solid enough tournament, but we have the buzz. {I couldn't resist.} Our offensive swarm {Cut it out, Kathy!} will push their full backs and goalkeeper to the limit.

Our left wing forward, Daniel Bednar, is just 15 years old and the most talked-about of our three university players. He nabbed the lone goal in our 1-13 v 0-12 win over Mapletish, and almost had a second. Dan's the third-highest scorer on the team behind the IFC Cardiff veteran frontliners Andrés Hallgrímsson and Robin Kramer. The battle to sign him early will be intense, especially since he also plays Babbage code for Berkley and both FAIR and NABC clubs will be bidding.

By the way, If we win there are no guarantees about facing Saugeais in the final. They have to face the host Ancharmunn fifteen in the other semifinal and playing the hosts in anything is a tough go. Look at The Kytler Peninsulae in the just-concluded Babbage code worlds for more proof of that.

Here's to a win and a rematch and a World Cup, just in time for THE World Cup to start qualifying. I like dreaming.
