Triimoria, we're rooting for you

Thusfar, the 'roos have been unable to re-secure second position in the 11th group, and are now facing near-certain elimination from qualification as the end is in sight and Eastfield Lodge continues to have a hold on the second position of the group. Today's match against Valanora did not help the 'roos at all, as the 10th ranked team in the world proved just too strong once again for the 'roos to defeat. The away match was going to be one of the most decisive moments for us in this group stage. Having beaten Eastfield Lodge, our priority targets, twice, has proven not to have helped us in gaining a significant advantage over them.

The away match versus Valanora ended up being more of a slaughter than an actual football game with a record number of cards being handed in any match the 'roos have ever played in, but like soldiers holding the barricades in a hopeless battle against an overwhelming force, it was a lost cause, no matter how bravely they fight back.

The match started out poorly enough. In the 18th minute, the Valanorans had taken the lead quickly with good passing techniques. Allandren Fresco found space for the pass and allowed Lucas Hearts to finish it off beautifully. To make matters worse, the second goal fell in a very short timespan after the first one, giving the Valanorans a 2 - 0 advantage over the visiting team, this time from a corner kick, volleyed in by Fresco who was left completely unattended by the defenders. A blunder by the 'roos which led to a wide margin early on.

The signal was clear now to the 'roos. Attack, attack with all might. They mounted up pressure, and retaliated hard, but to their own chagrin, they stumbled upon a wall of defenders and a keeper who was having a very good day. Then an attempted sliding challenge by Paetrov on Elenelwa failed. It resulted in a yellow card.

Another possibility arrived for a wide play into the penalty area. Paetrov runs with the ball with Elenelwa trying to take away possession, then a nasty hit of Paetrov's elbow in the face of Elenelwa led to his second yellow card and he was sent off. 34th minute, the 'roos are already down to 10.

Just before half time, a sliding challenge by Enda leads to an argument between him and Neltanta and is about to escalate as more players interfere in the argument. The referee intervenes quickly and has to separate the two in order to maintain the peace as players from both sides arrive at the scene to stop their teammates from doing anything stupid, but the verdict was already heard, and Enda and Neltanta received a yellow card each.

The second half wasn't much better. The 'roos did not concede any goals but cards continued to be passed onto players at an alarming rate, Enart Kerke looking anxiously from the sidelines at the unfolding match, waiting for that chance for the 'roos that'd bring them back into the game, but finding nothing but frustration.

Then some luck for the 'roos at last in the initial minutes of the first half when the 'roos, still one man down, received their opportunity from the cross by Dizau. It allowed for the header by Yamamoto who brought the scores to 2 - 1. The gap was smaller, but they were still long ways from getting a single point out of this match. The goal brought some motivation back into the match again, as getting level was once again in sight.

Attempt were made, but ended in nothing but frustration, and the 'roos nearly conceded another goal when the Valanorans made their own attempt at widening the margin. A harsh tackle on Fresco by Karp led to another yellow card and a free kick for the Valanorans from a very good position. The shot was taken, but miraculously the keeper managed to tip the ball over the bar for a corner, which was then cleared with a punch away from the keeper.

In the late minutes of the game, a nasty foul by Jevjøki, a completely mistimed tackle, led to another yellow card, marking the 6th one being handed out this game in total, and the 5th one for a players of the 'roos. The match ended in frustration with the scores remaining 2 - 1.

After this defeat, Eastfield Lodge managed to get way ahead of us, and things are looking grim as the 'roos are facing elimination. The chance is still there, but it is growing slim as more opportunities at gaining second place are closing down in the dying phase of the qualifications.

In order to forage enough points, the 'roos will have to draw and win at the minimum. Against the upcoming teams, Karlada and Zona Azul, both of which have already been eliminated, this should pose no problem. The real problem is that this can only be achieved if Eastfield Lodge loses their next match. Only then will we be able to collect together enough points for a place in the play-offs.

The next match the Eastfield Lodgers will be playing is against Triimoria. The Triimorians are one of the teams which still have a chance at qualifying, as long as the 'roos won't win their next matches, and the Triimorians themselves win both of their upcoming matches. Triimoria previously played Eastfield Lodge in an away match and managed to put up quite some resistance, though they still lost by a 1-goal margin.

The possibility still exists that the Triimorians win, which would open up the way for the remaining teams in the groups for the second spot. The chance, however, is slim, but this isn't the first time the 'roos had to rely on the performance of other teams in order to make it through despite the odds. To the 'roos, we wish the best of luck in the match against Karlada, and to the Triimorians, we wish you the best of luck even moreso against Eastfield Lodge.

Jeruselem coach Allison Salamida and Sammy Sallad ...

Sammy: Hey, I heard they could be hiring one of them Ursines as the next Jeruselem coach.
Allison: I don't know, no idea sorry.
Sammy: I guess looking at Jeru FC, it does sound attractive.
Allison: Yeah but there's a lot more politics with the Jeruselem team.
Sammy: Like keeping on the right side of the Dallas girls.
Allison: Well, I guess so.
Sammy: How come they haven't got rid of that useless Russell guy!
Allison: He's not useless, just not useful.
Sammy: Can't we have someone else!
Allison: Well, he does have a function in the team.
Sammy: Someone to hit on any female with two legs?
Allison: No, that's just his idea of social life.
Sammy: So what is his function?
Allison: As a disruption, he's always bit rough with his tackles so they try to avoid him.
Sammy: And then our other players pinch the ball of them while they are preoccupied
Allison: Yeah, well look how Jeru FC plays.
Sammy: They do go a bit overboard with tackling.
Allison: It works though.
Sammy: Yes, but that lot are half drunk anyway.
Allison: Obviously, we have a more refined game due to girls in the team.
Sammy: So the boys rough up the opposition, for the girls to take charge.
Allison: Yes
Sammy: Sofia is pretty good at roughing up anyone too.
Allison: Well, she's not the type to let people get in the way.
Sammy: I prefer the understated style, you know like Kissy.
Allison: She's got a lot self doubt though.
Sammy: I don't suppose I could be leader for a day?
Allison: Well, if Sofia wants a day off.
Sammy: Not likely, she's definitely no quitter.
Allison: A bit obsessed but that's her.
Sammy: Oh well.
Allison: Say, how are your twins coming along?
Sammy: I could do with a few extra people to help.
Allison: They are a bit ... unruly.
Sammy: I tell them shut up, doesn't work. Sofia tells them to shut up, they do.
Allison: You need more authority in your mothering.
Sammy: Maybe that's why I'm not a leader.
Allison: You can't be everything to everyone.

Stachland Reds

Group Four Still Up in the Air as End of Qualifying Looms
by Witold Elliott

We have seen this same sort of situation before, more than once—in World Cup 56 qualifying, Stachland finished a very narrow third to Bostopia and Pasarga, with that chase coming down to the very last fixtures, and in World Cup 57 qualifying Orlkjestad had at least a small possibility of slipping past the Reds on the final matchday, which our Stachlandic national team had off.

This time, however, the Reds will have to rally from a poor showing in the middle section of the campaign to attempt to surpass top seed Khytenna and the surging Euskirribakondara to reach, at the very least, the playoff match which could earn them entrance into the World Cup finals with a victory.

"It's tough," admitted head coach Rom Meyler, who has faced tough criticism since he assumed his position from long-time coach Theodore Czacki two years ago. "I can't help but feel as if it's something I've done wrong, myself, as we had eleven wins in qualifying last time around. And we won't be able to get there again."

The Reds' final two matches of qualifying will both be played at Union in Chevronia, with all seats in the stadium already sold out. The two opponents arriving to face them will be Nifferite and Unibot, two teams which have played in the middle of the group for essentially the entirety of this competition. Nifferite defeated the Reds one-nil in the first fixture between the two teams, while Unibot managed a 1-1 draw. Both of these games, however, were contested on the opposing side's home pitch, and the Reds are supremely confident in their ability to perform well for their fans.

"Simply enough, I won't allow any goals," said goalkeeper Navering Pounchtal. "It's difficult, sometimes, because all of our failures can be traced back to me, for allowing the other team to score. So, simply, I won't allow them to score."

Sudamartinese Player Lobbies to Join Reds
by Witold Elliott

A Sudamartinese football player by the name of Samuel Urbano has—to compliment his homeland's petition to join the Stachlandic nation—petitioned to be included on the Stachlandic national team for either the World Cup finals or the Cup of Harmony. Urbano is, by wide consensus, the greatest Sudamartinese footballer of all time, a powerful midfielder whose amateur team has consistently been one of the best on the island.

"With integration appearing more and more certain," explained Urbano, referencing the increasing preference within the Popular Congress towards accepted Sudamartina into Stachland, "it is only fitting that I be allowed to play on the international stage with Stachland's best, as a symbol of unity."

Coach Rom Meyler has commented that he will hold off on a final decision, but did mention that there were already twenty-three deserving players assigned to the Reds' official roster.

MANAGER SHOWDOWN AT MIDWAY POINT
Anxscht suffers first defeat, opens door for Hurst

Frederick Anxscht suffered his first defeat of the campaign by a 1-2 scoreline against Virabia, and the defeat couldn't have come at a worse time for the Landereien native. It came in the first of two 'showdown' matches in which Anxscht's performances will be compared directly to those of Civil Citizenry's Kirby Hurst.

Loala Kigoouao was on target for the Eels who played a tough match in Turori against Virabia, but in the end, Anxscht's side could not take anything away from a Virabia side still in the hunt for automatic qualification to the World Cup, and likely en route at least to a playoff position. Kigoouao scored in the first matchup against Virabia as well, making Loala the only Turorian ever to score against Virabia!

Anxsct' rebounded against Sjovenia, making not changes to the starting lineup from the match against Virabia. Anxscht desperately needed a victory to have any chance at winning the showdown, and got just that with a 2-1 result in the bottom-of-the-table clash that saw the Turori National Team leapfrog the national team of Sjovenia to take the Eels out of last place and closer to at least a more reasonable performance in the middle of the group table. Loala Kigoouao opened the scoring again for the Eels while Jukkia Diijelhma, introduced to the match in the 67th minute, did not waste much time finding the back of the net 5 minutes after coming on for the Turorian winner.

Now the Anxscht steps down and hands the Eels over to Kirby Hurst for the final two matchdays of the campaign. Rumor has Hurst's name being mentioned in other circles as potential replacements for outgoing or poor performing managers of other nations, however, Hurst, along with the other 7 managers in the Competition, already signed a conditional agreement with the Football Association of Turori, and the last two matchdays performances might determine just how much Hurst wants to honor that agreement, or if he has something 'better' lined up. Hurst will close out the Eel's campaign with winnable matches against Homelands Our and Wolfmanne.

JUNGLE CATS RELAX, PREPARE FOR FINAL RUN IN

Mytannion Victory keeps Vilita in contention despite bye

Coaches Kris Wrice and Tika Massa tried to keep the players minds relaxed and free during the matchday off the

Jungle Cats had during Matchday 16. A near impossible task when the top two teams in their group were playing

each other, with the Jungle Cats playoff chances literally riding on the result of the game. If Saugeais were able to

upset Mytannion, then the Jungle Cats would have been effectively eliminated from contention. Though they would

be just 3 points back, the goal differential that Saugeais has built up during the campaign precluded any possibility

of the Jungle Cats to be placed higher than Saugeais with Goal Differential being used as a tiebreaker in the

standings thus far throughout World Cup Qualification.

A Saugeais defeat, however, would see the Jungle Cats in a position to, so long as they avoided defeat on

Matchday 15, have a shot at a winner-take-all showdown with Saugeais on Matchday 16. In the days ahead of the

match, the players trained mornings at the training facility in Alikki-Corra. As Matchday 16 approached, Coaches

Wrice and Massa contemplated having a full 90 minute scrimmage in order to simulate keeping the players on a

regular match schedule to avoid any complacency going into the crucial final two matchdays. Inevitably, however,

the coaches decided the players would be too distracted wondering what their fate was pending the outcome of the

Saugeais v. Mytannion showdown to focus on a scrimmage match in the back field, and instead decided to set up a

room with multiple big screen's projected with instant rewind capabilities so the squad could watch the match

together, but also double the session as a bit of an early re-familiarization with the Saugeais side they will be facing

on the final matchday, being able to pause the match at appropriate points and even rewind and replay interesting

portions relevant to how the final match might go down.

The room was set up in a facility on the edge of the Tivali Jungle, identified by the VOIA as a facility that already

had the technical equipment the team was looking for in the quantities they needed to be able to do a proper live

match / match preparation combination event like was planned. The Football Association of Vilita also laid out a

small spread of healthy foods and local fruits for the players to snack on during the match.

Over the opening moments of the match, the Vilitan players were just getting settled in and joking around, but all eyes turned to the screen about 10 minutes into the match when Saugeais player Thomas Quentin was called for a foul inside the box, and the referee had awarded a penalty kick. A few cheers went up in the room but all eyes were now focused on Mytannion player Robin Hjik who prepared to take the spot kick. Saugeais keeper Jenson Paulson dove the wrong way and Mytannion was up 1-0 to the delight of the high-fiving Vilitans.

The mood got a tad more vibrant as half time approached when Mytannion winger Dimitry Alixysev was played in over the top and broke free on goal. Paulson really was left with little to do as the Group 10 leaders took a 2-0 lead over their closest rivals. Saugeais had to regroup, and had a few chances in the second half, but could never seem to break through

Saugeais kept pressing as the match neared its end, including a late corner kick where the goalkeeper incredibly came up to support in hopes of getting something to get them back in the game, but it never came.

With that, the atmosphere in the technology center was vibrant as the Jungle Cat players knew, that despite their

horrific run of results in the second half of qualifying, they still had the chance, if they could win their matches from

this point forward, of having a path that could lead to a World Cup Finals berth. There was no "Coulda-Woulda-

Shoulda" discussion about where they could have been sitting had they won even one of the three consecutive 0-1

defeats they suffered.

THE NEWS SOURCE
We bring you news

NOW VERY CLOSE

Everything in life is unpredictable. We can work hard for something, plan in the minimum details, make every kind of assurances, but in the end you cannot guarantee that something will happen in the exact way you imagined... in fact, it can be the complete opposite. And in football things are the same. You cannot foresee anything, you can just believe that one option is more likely, but that doesn't mean much. And the Cafundelense team experienced this, in a good way, in the last match versus The Archregimancy. Even with all the problems Cafundéu had, from the decrease in quality of the players in general to the low status of fame the Monopolists have right now, passing through the political situation in Cafundéu which can affect the players, the team surprised and was able to defeat The Archregimancy at their own home. Perhaps their place, which has a peaceful and respectful atmosphere, and the motivation of playing the top opponent of the group gave the players the distraction they needed from their daily lives and with this they gave their best, playing with happiness and achieving the positive result.

This win versus the monks puts the Cafundelenses in an excellent situation in the World Cup qualifying stage, one that was much dreamed by the supporters but one which they didn't have much confidence in its happening. Now they have, and a lot. Cafundéu is just one victory away from the automatic qualification spot, just three points from glory after major disappointments in the two previous cycles. With the matches against the better-ranked nations over, there is some sense in the excitement the players have right now, which is reaching the supporters, now anxious for the moment to commemorate the qualification. But they still can't. As said, the future is unpredictable. Just like the new strategy of Emperor Raúl I to catch the support of the Cafundelense citizens and keep himself on the throne, something that looks unlikely right now, given that even some members of the royal family now distrust him, for not being able to keep the people's confidence on the monarchy. Raúl, seeing the recent sucess of the Cafundelense football squads, the men' and women' which are both playing in the World Cup, decided to take advantage of this.

In recent announcements, he has been praising the hard work of the Cafundelense athletes, saying that they are an example of Cafundéu's glory and spoke of his belief that they'll be able to send back the nation to the old times, just like he is working hard in the political field to put Cafundéu in these days. He claimed that he saw the situation of the squad as a mirror of his own: that he has to prove that the disbelief of the people isn't justified. And that, finally, the players are showing the love for their country... and for the Empire. With his words, it seemed like the players were supporters of Raúl I's reign, something that none wanted to comment. "We are so close to the qualification and now they want to drag us to a political discussion? We know nothing about this, we are travelling all around the world and just want to focus on football, please", said the midfielder Ana Paula, frustrated by the questions about the Emperor's speech. This new development is even making some citizens, the ones less informed about the real relation involving the National Team and the Empire, condemn the National Team. "They should be here, then, to see that things are not that good under Raúl's guidance. Why are they, who are our idols, defending that man?", said a housewife, not understanding that the players made no comment defending the monarchy, though they didn't defend the opposition either.

A History of Ipelandic Football

Part 4: A Change in the Landscape

Welcome to the 4th part of this feature on Ipelandic football history. If you missed part one, part two and part 3 they are available in the archives.. If you just want to see the results click here, or scroll to the bottom of the page. On with Part 4.

As mentioned in the last part of this series, many football fans in Ipeland wanted to see a change to the two horse race for the title, between Caelon County and Melberton Town. Some fans began turning to the lower leagues for football during the 2000s, as ticket prices at the top clubs kept going up and the money earned by an average person got less and less every year. Many non-league football clubs held a pay whatever you like day, which often saw them get bumper crowds in their small stadiums.

2000 saw little change on or off the field in the Premier League. Another two horse race for the title again, which saw Caelon County pip Melberton by 2 points. 3rd place was taken by newcomers Walkden F.C., who saw, despite their good performances, the lowest crowds in the Premier League; averaging only 20,300 throughout the season. The IFA Cup saw a relatively large match between Division 2 side Hutt River Embassy F.C. and Hutt River national football team, who were allowed in for the first time in 200, and have been competing ever since. A crowd of 12,000, the population of Hutt River, turned up to see the national team beat the embassy 3-2 after extra time.

The 2001 remained pretty much the same as 2000's. Caelon County winning by a total of 6 points this time and the Vant Islands finishing 3rd in the Premier League. However, at the end of the 2001 season, during the winter break, the IFA folded due to hidden debt, which was only made public after they folded. This resulted in the cancellation of all fixtures of the 2001 season in all leagues, apart from nine smaller leagues that acted independently of the IFA.

These leagues; The Greater Walkden League Division 2, Caelon League Division 4, Leighton League Division 1, Salfordon Amateur Division, Pendleton League 2, Trumpton Championship, Hammersburg League Division 6 East, Winwick Amateur Reserve League and the Vant Islands Division 2, all saw massive crowds and a lot of media coverage, which came as a shock to the teams who had played in obscurity throughout their history. The best team from the leagues, and Hutt River's national team, played in a quickly formed cup, of which all four editions were won by Hutt River.

The IFA finally reformed in 2005, and most clubs fell back into their respective leagues. All premier league clubs returned, apart from Melberton Town who had gone bankrupt the previous year. Vant City was chosen to replace them, then things restarted as normal. Vant City outstripped the rest of the field and stormed to the title, having an unbeaten season, and scoring 50 points. Walkden F.C. won the next championship, as Vant City spectacularly fell from grace, scoring only 17 points and getting relegated. Walkden F.C. also won in 2008 and looked like winning 2009's, but a bad run of results saw Eccles snatch it from them.

The chimes of the new clock, Big Bob, on 31st January 2009 brought an end to a turbulent decade. Many fans wanted change in 1999, and they certainly saw it, albeit in a different way then they originally thought.

Tommorrow it will be Part 5: The Name of the Game

I don't want to bring up any Titanic references, but this ship is starting to sink. And it is very unfortunate that it is, seeing as we had one of the best rosters ever compiled from a Saugeais side for the Cup cycle. I guess we used up all our goals in the first match against Brightonburg, when we defeated them 9-0, as the Knights have been struggling for goals as of late. This was further proven this past match against Mytannion, where there shut us out 2-0. It could be due to the fact that the domestic season is started to wind down as well, because most of the players seemed tired going on to the pitch. The Mytanion team looked strong, and dominated the match from the get go.

Saugeais did manage to knock a few shot a goal during the match, but Mytannion started the scoring off with a penalty kick in the 10th minute, when Thomas Quentin presumably lost his focus, and made a hard tackle on a Mytanar inside the penalty box. Midfielder Robin Hjik was on to take the kick, as his abilities are such that they would rival Amaechi Olsen's. He lined up the shot and struck it true, hitting into the right side of the net while Jenson Paulson dove left. The Mytanars were up 1-0, and the Knights needed to regroup with a strategy. Unfortunately, playing more defensive wasn't something they have done often, and being forced into that tactic proved to be even more difficult to execute. Mytannion scored there second goal in the 38th minute, when winger Dimitry Alixysev received a long ball forward over the defenders' heads. Dimitry had the pace to challenge the defense already, but coupled with the fact that the back line was prematurely tired, made his life so much easier as he broke away from the pack. Bearing down on goal, Dimitry shot a low liner under Paulson that just squeezed past the post and into the net. Mytannion 2-0, and the home crowd was starting to get angry.

"I could tell we didn't have it today," said manager Mag Aonghusa. "Not to discourage my players, but I didn't think they would be this tired and beat up when I named my roster. But we had to fight through it, and I was hoping to get a goal out of the match, much less a point...........Yes, I did try to enforce a defensive mentality in the second half. Mytannion was bearing down on us, and we needed to remain at the back to prevent them from making it 3 or 4 to nil. Goal difference is key for us right now." The second half saw Saugeais pull out a 5-4-1 formation, subbing out Olsen and Dan Nagato, putting Dietmar Öztürk in the striker position, while bringing in two corner backs to help on the defensive line. The plan did work, as the Mytanars did not score another goal in the match, but the formation severely hindered the Knights' attempts at scoring.. Getting off 4 shots in the half, all of them in the last 7 minutes of the match, the Knights were doomed from the start of that formation. While it was a valiant effort at the end of the match, the Knights still lost and the battle for second place has now become a four horse race, with Vilita, Sargossa, and Nethertopia all fighting to take Saugeais' spot.

Now the Knights will take on Sargossa at home, who has been steadily climbing back into the race and now sits just 2 points clear of second place. The Corsairs, no doubt, will put up a hell of a fight. "We just need to prepare, put all of our effort into one match at a time," stated Aonghusa in the post-match conference. "The boys need to find the will to play, which I'm surprised they have had recently. We're fighting for a playoff spot, that should be motivation enough, don't you think?"

And so it came to pass that in the morning the commuters in one carriage of a commuter train from Southampton to London (calling at Havant, 6.29 a.m.) found themselves joined by a quartet of decidedly large and hairy foreigners, who chatted amongst themselves in a language that none of their fellow travellers understood.

“Bloody ‘Eee-You’, making us let all sorts of continentals into the country” one of the commuters remarked (somewhat to the Bears' confusion) to a colleague before lowering his head once more to resume reading his newspaper, but otherwise nobody seemed to be paying much attention to the four Bears at all.

“Are we nearly there yet?”

“Urra….”

“I’m sorry, Marra, for true, but I hrreally want to get back home quickly to find out how well the Belles have done in the ‘away’ game against
Western Cuba that I had to miss because of this mission. So… Ur’rmm… Hrroughly how much longer will this journey take?”

“Hwell, according to my map that town with the very tall Christian church visible over the other buildings that we passed through a hwhile back should have been the one that’s called
Chichester, and we’ve passed through one other station since then, so…
“Look, keep your eyes on the view northwards out of that window: Hwhen you see a town with a large castle in it visible on a hillside, just before we cross a river, that will mean that we’re getting fairrrly close to the town hwhere we’re supposed to meet the person hwho’ll be directing us on the next stage of this journey home. This train will still have a few more stations — Ur’rmm, let’s see, four of them — to pass through between the river and the place hwhere we have get off, but it isn’t actually supposed to stop at any of those…
“Hokay?”

“Ur’rmm… Hokay.”

(A little while later…)

“is Worthing. I repeat, the next station stop is Worthing. Passengers for East Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham-on-Sea, Southwick, or Fishersgate, should alight at this station and wait on the same platform for a connecting service. The next station stop is Worthing.”

“Well, there we are, nearly there.”

“Ayyuh. Baloo, wake Ggregh up, hwill you?”

“Hokay, will do.”

(A little while later…)

“Hrright, then, here we go. You three follow me quite closely, have your tickets ready held like this (Here Marra demonstrated the correct way around …) “and put them into the machine like I do, hwhen you get to it, so that it will open the gate to let you through. We’d better all use the wide gate, just to be on the safe side.”

The four Bears all got off of the train, passed through the ticket barrier without any problems, and left the station. Marra looked around…

“Hokay, so I was told that the person hwhom we’re supposed to meet here hwould be waiting somewhere along this strip of pavement, that he’s an adult male Human, and that — to help us recognise him — he’d be carrying a soft toy in the form of a type of bird that’s called a Dodo… hwhich I was shown a sketch of.”

“Did it look anything like the bird that that man there is carrying?”
Urra enquired, pointing at the person she thought might be the right one.

“Ayyuh, it did,”
Marra replied. “Hokay, let’s see.” She led the quartet towards the man, stopped a couple of yards in front of him, and asked the question that had been pre-arranged as her part of the recognition process: “Stands the church clock at ten to three?”

“Honey’s off, dear,” was the man’s response, and the correct signal.
“Am I correct in thinking that you are Marra SunDaughter, and that your companions over there are Urra SunBlesséd, ‘Ggregh’, and ‘Baloo’?”

“Ayyuh, that’s hrright. And you are the man named ‘Simon’ hwhom I was told would see us safely on the next stage of our journeys back home?”

“Indeed so. If you’ll all follow me, it’s just a little way to what we might call the ‘transfer point’ that we’ll be using for that purpose.”[/i] Beckoning the Bears forwards, he turned and began walking eastwards. They looked at him and, for want of any better ideas did as he’d suggested.

“Marra," Urra tried to whisper, “there seems to be something a bit strange about that man: I can sort-of-see his aura out of the corners of my eyes — Can the ‘Urra’ hwhom you already knew before this trip sense auras, too? — and although he obviously isn’t a member of the Harr’aynau people it actually looks more Ursine than Human…”

“Hr’rmm, that’s interesting… and might maybeso explain [u]hwhy he’s helping us, too. And yes, the Urrra hwhom I know back home can see auras if she concentrates… but I don’t think that she could do so back hwhen she was only the age that you are now. Anyhows, we’d better stop talking and get hrready to hear how we’re going to do the next bit of travelling…”

By this stage Simon had led them away from the station’s frontage and, through the ground floor of a five-storey structure that Marra worked out was some sort of car-parking facility, to an underpass where a pedestrian path went through beneath the slope that carried a wide road over the railway’s tracks. He faced the four Bears again and, although he didn’t really look very impressive even for a Human (being of around average height or only slightly above that by local standards, on the stout side [although not grossly so], aged apparently — from what Marra knew of humans — probably somewhere in the late forties or early fifties, with hair in which a rather muddy shade of brown was being crowded out by grey, and casually clad) something about his expression made them all stop and give him their full attention.

Derbies Decide Destiny

It's been a funny old campaign. We should be rather annoyed after some truly dreadful performances. A pre-qualification trouncing courtesy of these pesky Pocoans seemed to set the tone for disappointment and home defeats to Vilita, Saugeais and Landereien in the first half of qualifying had the notoriously fickle Soluca crowd baying for blood. A win in the big derby game against Nethertopia did succeed in earning coach Vazquez and his charges some respite. Respite that evaporated pretty quickly as the Mytanars arrived and struck six passed Sargossa's so-called finest.

That result could yet prove to be something of a watershed as since that balmy night at the Estadio Generalissimo Delgado the dark blues have picked up thirteen of the subsequent fifteen points on offer to keep alive their hopes of a first World Cup qualification since the 52nd edition of the tournament. Four goals apiece were netted against Elmonia and Tymason, as Vazquez's attacking formula seemed to finally take root, while a hard fought win in Vilita could be looked back on as the most significant three points of the whole damn lot. Yes we should be annoyed. It feels like a disappointing campaign. And yet the recent run of form sees Sargossa sit a single point away from second place in Group 10 with just two games yet to play.

With group leaders Mytannion already over the hill and far away second place is the best the rest of us can hope for and the penultimate match is make or break as the Corsairs face a nasty trip to Rushmori rivals Saugeais, the favourites for that precious runner's up spot. And with home advantage against lower ranked opposition coupled with what their local media believe to be one of the strongest pools of talent in the Knight's sporting history the pressure will be on Iarlaith Mag Aonghusa's side to deliver. But pressure can do funny things and Sargossa's finest will be ready to pounce on any mistakes. One thing's for certain, with two attacking sides going all out for a win, it should be a cracking game.

Sargossa need a win to leapfrog Saugeais in the table while victory for the Knights will move them tantalisingly close to that playoff. Elsewhere the Jungle Cats of Vilita are still on the prowl and enjoy two home games to end their campaign. Brightonburg should provide little opposition for the former World Cup winners meaning this Group 10 battle will go down to the final round of matches. Should the Corsairs sneak three points in Saugeais their final game is in Soluca against near neighbours Nethertopia. On paper, a good draw. In reality, yikes. Those damn Falcons have previous in this neck of the woods. Nine tournaments ago the Corsairs were looking good to qualify for the finals, behind Jeruselem. All they needed was a single point from the final game. That game was in Soluca. The opposition were Nethertopia. The result is best forgotten.

"Good evening. This is Logan Dale, Fenris Sports Corner. We open tonight with our continued coverage of the World Cup. Somehow Jedi8246 manages to hang on to qualification possibility by a thread. Coming to a draw with the inferior team, Branta Island, at 2-2, the team thought itself finished from qualification. However, surprises continue to rock the group. Kulverint and Wight went to a no scoring tie game. Soviet Canuckistan also beat the superior team of Chetkosk. These factors have created a situation where the playoff spots are still open to any of of the six suriving teams. While Jedi8246 technically sits at the bottom of this scale, the way games have been playing means that anything is possible. Though Kulverint will likely secure one of the spots, two upsets are a possiblity. Jedi8246 must secure a crucial win against Wight tomorrow to stay alive. Should that happen, Jedi8246 would have to pull for an ABK and Chetkosk loss.

If Wight can defeat ABK in the final game, it would mean that Jedi8246 pulls through with a superior record than either of them. Chetkosk would have to pull draws or losses to give Jedi8246 the spot. Coach Hemlock spoke to us earlier today. He feels the team has all the tools it needs to pull off the last two games. The rough later half of this season was difficult, but hope remains alive in the team and in the people. The Wyverns are wished the best of luck by Fenris Inc. After the break, domestic football news as well as the approaching World Bowl.

Darmen draws winnable game, fate now rests with several teams

Darmen's draw with Neo Japan came as a huge suprise to the 70,000+ fans attending the match. While most fans left the Stadium in dissapointment, some looked to the draw with a sense of optimism. Braden Iverson, a fan from Brham, had this to say about the draw, "I realise that we should've won, but the draw didn't eliminate us. Personally, I think Darmen should rest their starters for the final two matches and give up trying to qualify for the World Cup. For the most part, Darmen will be absolutly outclassed by the teams we might possibly get drawn with if we qualify, but we have excellent chances to perform well in the Cup of Harmony."

Iverson's train of thought was not shared though by Manager Tim O'Donahaue, who seemed a little irked that Darmen had struggled so badly in the first half of the match. "Our offense was absolutley terrible. The Midfield couldn't get the ball moving forward, and when they did manage to get it moving, Faulkner and Nolan botched all three of their chances on goal. The only bright spot was the defense, who, if you'll remember, used to be our Achilles Heel."

Tor Tong Lee scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute. After cutting out a pass between two of his opponents, Lee made a short run towards goal, slid past the final defender that stood in his way, and curled the ball past the Goalkeeper. The goal was the equaliser Darmen so badly needed just to keep Darmen's qualification hopes alive, after Neo Japan scored the opening goal in the 37th minute.

Darmen now must travel to Burchadinger, and face was could possibly be the toughest crowd in Group 15. O'Donahaue commented on the crowd, saying, "We must be able to block out the crowd, as they'll definately be most unfriendly. If the Midfield can show some good form, simmillar to that of our 4-0 win over Octinstine on Matchday 11, I think we should be able to win, setting up what should be a very exciting final matchday. But the key is still to not let the crowd get to us."

When asked what he would do for the final match against Errikesh should Darmen lose or draw against Burchadinger, O'Donahaue replyed, "We'll rest most of the starters and substitutes, and allow most of the Training Squad to start. Obviously once your eliminated, you try to get ready as best you can for the Cup of Harmony. And this time, I think we have as good a chance as ever to advance deep into the C-O-H.

Darmen must win tonight if it want's to keep it's qualification hopes alive. But some, like Mr. Iverson, have given up already, and want Darmen to focus on the Cup of Harmony. The game will be broadcast tonight, nationaly, on the Darmeni Broadcasting Corporations main channel (Cable #1, Satelite #45), at 7:00p.m.(DST).

August was enjoying a rather pleasant dream when a strong hand on his shoulder jolted him to consciousness. He blearily looked over and saw- to his shock- one of his guards pointing a gun at him.
"Who- what-" was all he could stammer out as he tried to process the novelty of the situation he found himself in. The guard smiled, then reached behind his ears and peeled off his face. Rather, he peeled off the rather artfully constructed mask that made him a perfect likeness to one of August's guards. Staring in shock at the face of Phillip Garren, August suddenly remembered that the two mercenaries he'd hired to kill Garren never had shown up to collect, and the enormity of his mistake drained the color from his face.

"Don't say a word," Garren hissed, "or I'll blow your head off right now. Keep quiet and listen, I'm going to give you one last chance to redeem yourself. What you're doing is wrong and illegal, but if you stop now, the resistance is planning to allow you to keep the throne. Stop your attacks on freedom and restore the power you've taken, and you will live."

August chuckled quietly, "You fool! I'll never change, and I'll never step down. Your resistance is finished, and there's no way you can escape."

"Very well." Phillip squeezed the trigger, and August was blown backwards by a bullet impact at point-blank range...

...and was up again immediately as his guards swarmed Garren. August pulled out a syringe and stabbed it into his arm as he laughed triumphantly. "You can't harm me! No one can! This drug can heal mortal wounds in seconds and prevent them for days, you're dead!"

Garren sagged in defeat, knowing that he had failed as August calmly picked up Garren's gun and took aim. Suddenly, a new voice came over the intercom, "This is the captain, I think you all in the cabin will want to hear this." The voice of Luke Parrish poured out over the radio: "People of West Angola, your king is not who you think he is..."

A few of the comments sent in after Fire's letter was published in the local press

James Hendrickson, Freedom's Altar: What an article! Made me want to cry. The team, though struggling, has had Unbidden and Bidden watching football together, rooting for one body instead of different groups. It has indeed brought our nation together, and therefore they deserve recognition for this feat. Hopefully, they'll become better with time in the future!

Jessica Danhazel, Wolvesband: Nice, but seriously, we have been pathetic this season. You really want to get this nation riled up? Start winning some games! Then we'll take you seriously.

Nicholas Scheffler: I didn't know that a Demon could be so thoughtful! He should be my pet.

Unknown: Death to the Demons! Kick them off the team! Serion's will be done forever!

Huffin' and Puffin
The somewhat bearable musings of a moderately tubby man
- it's Yuri Stempov's Football Blog

How are we still in this?

Have y'all seen Group 17 lately? All six of the top six teams are still in danger of not qualifying, and it's doing my head in. 29, 25, 25, 22, 22, 21, that's the points as they stand, and what happens when I say "we need all the points we can get"? Soviet Canuckistan go and steal three from us. Three oh-so-vital points. Thanks, guys.

What I find more amusing is that, if Kulverint lost their two remaining games and ABK and Wight won both of theirs, the top team at the moment would not make it to even the play-offs, and that is testament to how close this group has actually been. Do you want to hear the good news? Chetkosk hold advantages over Wight and Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk in both goal difference and head to head performances, so if we manage to earn enough points that we tie with them, we'll end up ahead of them. This is good news, as they're both tied for points at the moment too, which would place us in that playoff spot.

Tied with us on points (after last night's truly abysmal performance) is Soviet Canuckistan, who also have a chance at claiming qualification, and only one point behind that are Jedi8246 who are clinging onto the dream of qualification after their fall from the top of the table. I just don't know what to think about this group any more, fortunes keep shifting here and there. It's as if the group is sentient and doesn't want anyone to qualify just yet, keeping six teams in suspense, at the mercy of random numbers plucked out of the aether by some lines of code in a game...
...nahhh, ignore that last bit.

Just one more game against bottom team Puerto Candelaria before we face off against Kulverint once more. We managed a draw last time, and Kulverint have drawn several games recently if memory serves me correctly, including against that lot at Branta Island. They seem to revel in stealing two points at a time from high seeds, it's uncanny.

Then that'll be it - two more matches and then the blame game begins. And either the World Cup finals or, hopefully, the Cup of Harmony. A little birdie told me Chetkosk will most likely be asked to attend, so not qualifying isn't the end of the world. Did you hear that, loyal Chicks? It's not the end of the world...

Chapter X : Saint Konstantin and the Molkosh

Editor's note: This story in Chetislavi mythology has a first person account written by an aide to the named Saint Konstantin. It isn't clear what truth there is in the statement, nor what prompted the tale to be told with the addition of a giant hellish toad. Nevertheless, it makes for interesting reading for those who enjoy their mythology.

In the summer of yesteryear, I, Victor Grauss, accompanied my charge, the revered Father Konstantin, upon a holy pilgrimage to the Radinstad Chapel. The route we plotted took us across the northern coast of our pleasant lands, with a view of the grey Lednik Sea and the fine work of Agodur and his aquatic world.

Upon this quest for enlightenment and absolution, we often camped at indiscriminate and inconspicuous locations along the coast, embracing the harsh weather that so often converges along the coastline as punishment for past failures. Father Konstantin is a kind man and treats me well, and in return I offer him my utmost efforts in servitude to the church. On that fateful day he was in a particularly high mood, one of being at peace with the world gifted from on high in Hestzhall and thereby made such a terrifying contrast with what was to come my heart quivers to write this account now.

It was upon the 14th day of the month of July that the event occurred, which I now recount in writing. I fear I have forgotten the exact location as I did not think to consult the map following our misadventure, but it is not important save for those who wish to search for remnants of the demon (I shall explain reference to this most unholy of devices in due time, have patience and read on).

Toward the eve of the day myself and the holy father were walking down along the beach rather than the path higher up on the hillocks of grasses and sand and stone. Our slim morsels of food that we rationed ourselves to on the pilgrimage were growing scarce in our satchels as we had not stopped in a settlement for supplies of late, and our bellies were rumbling most ferociously. We saw not far off in the distance a large rock protruding from the swash, and it was peculiar to us due to the queer shape it took. Upon walking closer we saw it looked like it glistened more than a solid rock should, and two appendages on the sides looked like eyes - but not like the eyes of man, they were fully black and glossy and ill-looking.

The father decided to approach with caution, and I hung back such that there would be less chance of the creature, if it indeed was a creature, would stir - perhaps aggressively. Then, as the backwash splashed it's way back out to sea after a large wave, the hideous being was revealed for us to set eyes on. It was a toad-like being of gargantuan proportions, larger than any natural amphibian I have ever laid eyes on. It was bloated and ugly, though the stench that I immediately assumed it would be emitting was not forthcoming.

Instead, the demon - for it could be nothing else, so unnatural as it was, than the work of the primal giants and their heathen curse - appeared not to be at all worried by the arrival of myself and my charge. After a few moments, it's legs shifted it's rotund body forwards a little, out of the surf enough to open it's mouth without getting a mouthful of salty water. I spectated the scene with a dumb expression as the beast's tongue protruded from the gaping hole that was it's mouth and extended out towards Father Konstantin. Upon reaching it's furthest extension a bright light engulfed the tip, and a delightful sight appeared when the blinding haze had dissipated.

Food. Glorious food. A delicious looking roast set out upon a silver platter and surrounded by all the sumptuous vegetation you could hope for. I was, at this point in the bizarre proceedings, ravenous, and I expect the revered father was the same. And the smell - oh, the smell - If only I could but remember the enchanting fragrance that found it's way to mine nostrils. I was intoxicated from the first sniff.

I don't remember what happened in the next few seconds, as my next memory of the events was as I was standing next to the giant tongue, my hands reaching out for the tasty wonder that sat on the tip of the demon's tongue. Father Konstantin later told me that I was in some kind of trance, and when I arrived within reach of the demon, the food slid to the ground and the tongue grappled onto my legs. I remember being dragged back towards the large toad's mouth which was wide open to greet me. I yelled for all to hear of my frustrations at being eaten alive, and the father answered my cry for aid.

Suddenly, over my shoulder flew the platter of food, shining as if it were about to disappear as quickly as it had originally arrived, and went sailing into the abyss that I was fast approaching. In an instant the belly of the demon groaned unhappily and I was released from it's slimy grasp. A few moments later the beast was wobbling and swelling before seemingly deflating into nothing and washing away in the constant backwash of the Lednik Sea. The demon was done, and Konstantin knew it's name - the Molkosh, the demon of Gluttony.

With this recount of the events that transpired, I hope to be of good enough character to aid you in your decision of the sainthood of Father Konstantin. I swear by Heimvakt that these events are true, may he cast me into Holheim should I be lying.

VERGER Victor Grauss
aide to FATHER Konstantin

Konstantin was indeed made into a saint, and the sin of gluttony was confined to the souls of mankind and cast out of it's physical form on the middle earth.

-------------- Deity Spotlight --------------

Idyana is the daughter of Second Echelon deities Yosevlod and Thishnaya and sister to Danica, Goddess of Poetry, Humour and the Arts. Often labelled as tainted by the sin of vanity, Idyana has always held true the concept of inner beauty and beauty of the soul to the Chetislav peoples. Naturally, women are the sex that typically pray to Idyana, though she is by no means gender-exclusive.

She is also wife to Vrhn, God of War, and they are sometimes seen as some form of stereotypical ideal couple - with the masculine, doting husband and the beautiful, caring wife. They are also polar opposites, being involved in both the love and the war of mortals, and therefore rarely discuss their duties to middle earth with each other.

Damn. Just missed the cutoff. Oh well. :)

Part 3

The tunnel they had been following opened onto a high ledge overlooking the outer guard room of the dungeon. One guard sat behind the slowly rotting desk asleep. Beyond the barred gate into the dungeon itself, Sonya could count seven of the ten guards playing some exotic card game that obviously required small wagers and lots of large insults. He other three guards and the rock troll were nowhere to be seen. Thus far Mathym’s information had been accurate when they planned the attack.

The elf was already near the sleeping guard and would soon dispatch of him and retrieve the keys that would allow them into the dungeon. When the key was placed into the lock, Dorian and Badger would already be moving and gain the second room at full tilt just as the gate swung open. The two massive warriors would disable the majority of the card players before any could react. Badger would then find the troll while Dorian handled any remaining guards. Sonya had seen the two in action many times and did not doubt they could handle things as planned. She would lend support with her bow from the gateway with her bow while Mathym and Efink freed the King and made good their escape. Efink had taken much convincing that he was needed to protect the King rather than face the rock troll. The little pixie thought he was a giant in combat.

All went as planned - at first. The duo of Claymore and Battleaxe laid the card players lifeless in short manner. But that was as far as it went smoothly. The rock troll that shattered the doorway to the left was the biggest creature she had ever seen in her life and even Badger’s eyes widened in surprise as he sprang forward to meet it. Dorian began to follow the barbarian but a flurry of movement from the left grabbed his attention and he reluctantly turned to face the new threat. Sonya counted them as they came while stringing the first arrow. 12 there were- not three. And these were 12 fully armored Orokai soldiers, not just dungeon guards. As the first arrow left her fingers she knew it was pointless. Their armore was far ti heavy for he light arrows. She laid the oaken bow next to the gate and drew the brace of hand axes she carried. Not her choice of weapons, but it was better than futile arrows.

Steel crashed on steel and the battle was underway. She could hear grunts as massive blows were parried and smell the warm stench of blood as it drained from those who fought. There was no time to think, only time to act and react,

Two of the Orokai came at her and she attacked full on hoping to catch them unprepared. The ploy worked as her right axe found the space just between the helm and currias of the one, dispatching him quickly. The second parried and sent his khopesh arcing at her own neck. The blow missed when he was bowled over by Badger, who had been tossed across the room by the troll. The barbarian howled in fury and rushed the gigantic beast again. He was bloody in a dozen places but did not seem to notice. She turned as Dorian dispatched the final Orokai. Eight of them he had taken out while she had merely managed one. Time and time again, he managed to impress her.

Badger went flying again, this time landing unceremoniously on top of the Paladin sending both sprawling on the floor weaponless. The lumbering troll advanced on the pair ready to end their part in the fight. Sonya raced across the room to intercept it. Yet just as the behemoth was about to strike, it stopped and looked around dazedly before crashing lifeless to the floor. Enink floated in the space where the troll had been gently wiping the ochre blood from his blade.

“Now who was it that could not defeat the beatie?”

Mathym raced back into the room at that moment. “The King is gone!”

It took some time for that to register.

To Be Continued…

Facing Off with Kevin Torress

DW: Is Camian football headed in the right direction?

KT: I think so. I do believe that Kiplin is doing an excellent job managing the team, but compared to other talent in our group, we aren't as good that way. I feel that as the sport grows we'll have better players, and hence, a better team.

DW: How is your career in domestic football going?

KT: Actually, I'd like to announce something. I am moving to Civil Citizenry to play for North Woodlands. I decided that Civil Citiznery would be a good experience for my career, and to raise my family. I believe that I will be able to give Benjamin, my son, a better education then I would in Camwood.

DW: Oh wow! That's big news! So why did you leave the Dynamo

KT: Well, Albert Wild, the Vanler Dynamo owner, has been running short on mone. He came to me privately and told me that I might be released from the club for salary reasons. I talked to him personally and partially weighed my decisionon the fact that leaving the Dynamo would help the organization in the long run.

DW: On a different note, how do you think the World Cup Qualifying is going?

KT: Pretty mediocre. I was hoping to finish in at least fifth, so about now we're trying to cut our loses and make up lost ground, I know alot of players are going back to Camwood to play for hsi club teams.

DW: Think of the following question losely. If your family and your football career were hanging on a cliff, which one would you save?

KT: My family. Life isn't about fame and athletics and stuff like that. I mean I love the posrt don't get me wrong, but in the end Kaitlyn and Ben are the ones I am devoted to. In fact, if my wife wanted me to retire today, I'd retire ASAP. No questions asked.

DW: If Ben and Kaitlyn were hanging on a cliff which would you save?

KT: [laughs] Shut the flip up.

DW: You're not keen on choosing eh? [laughs]

Qualification. Hell yes. First time ever. Hell yes. That was the general feeling in the changing room after the cleansheet against Cheergirls. It was a brilliant game from the team though Roberto Bennedetto, minus that penalty they had given away. Ringëril somehow ended up marking one of their strikers in the goal box. Somehow he pulled her down and got a yellow and a penalty for that. Their penalty taker had went left, Bennedeto had gone right and saved the damn thing.

"OH HELLLLLLLL YEAAAAAAAA," shouted Bennedetto. His shout was mirrored by everyone else present in the changing room, which was the entire team plus the coaching staff. They could afford to relax. They were going on. They had a chance. They would make the most of it.

They would win the World Cup resolved Bennedetto to himself. He smiled, looked towards the ceiling and let out a wild roar whilst his teammates slapped him and each other on the back and let out their own roars, their own challenges.

"National team play again?" said Eva.

"Yep," said Francisco.

"In the Supercentro?"

"Yep. None of our business."

"Did they win?"

"Probably."

"The national football team won," said the radio, "with goals from Lanos and Robledo, both of Dénprade, whose attack has..."

Domingo turned the radio off.

"Hey," said Jaime, "I was listening to that."

"You were?" said Francisco.

"Yeah."

"Why?"

"Wanted to learn about the Universidad de Dénprade attack."

"Once upon a time," said Beatriz, "there was a university in Dénprade. Then the oppressive government clamped down on knowledge and whatever. The end."

"The football team," said Jaime. "They are renowned for their attacking style, and feature one of Aguazul's most successful female managers. They have two players on the national team, a striker and a winger."

"How do you even know all this?" asked Domingo.

Jaime shrugged.

"Then you know all of it already, so why do you want to learn more?"

"Think," said Jaime, "about what goes through the head of the national football team manager when he, or she if it was a she, is calling up players. Say you needed a new attacker. Where would you start looking?"

"Aguazul!" said Eva. "Cause of nationalism and rules and things."

"There's a point in that," Jaime admitted with a heavy sigh. "Which teams, though?"

"Er. The. Ones that won. The league?"

"There's a start, but you'd probably need more than they had."

"The ones that came in second."

He nodded. "To a point."

"What about," said Beatriz, "the ones that scored a lot? Teams like, like Dénprade! Because maybe their defensive players weren't very good, so they couldn't do well in the league, but maybe their forwards were really good."

Jaime gave a long, slow, nod.

"But that doesn't make sense," said Eva. "If teams like Dénprade are good at offense but not really good at defense, how do you know if it's because their players are all that good? Maybe it's because they just put more people on offense and less on defense. Cause...you can do that." Back in her prerevolutionary days, "how to move soldiers around" in Aguazul's military had been often analogized to "how to move footballers around." "Maybe Dénprade doesn't necessarily have the best forwards after all."

Jaime gave a long, slow, nod.

"Well," Beatriz and Eva both blurted out, "which is it?"

"I don't know," said Jaime, "there are reasons why I'm not managing the national team."

"Yeah, like you're supposed to be part of a revolution," said a very irritated Domingo.

Jaime shrugged. "What was it your translators say about Spanish, Francisco?"

With narrowed eyes, Francisco said, "It's weird for people who don't know Spanish that ser and estar aren't the same. Some traits are permanent, some traits are temporary, and there's different words for them."

"And some things are certain traits because that is what they are, by nature; they could not be otherwise while being that thing. Dénprade have football players; they could not be otherwise and still be a football club. While these same things have other traits that depend on the choices they've made; Dénprade are in the first division, but only because they got promoted from the second."

"This is what you were saying last night."

"What was he saying last night?" said Eva.

"Rabbit and turtle stuff again," Beatriz groaned. "Something about how one of his old books didn't go far enough."

"What'd the book say?"

"Don't you start!"

"It said that none of the old stories about Nanabos could possibly be true because rabbits and turtles don't do that, that'd just be weird. Because if you had someone like Nanabos you could just as easily have someone else who was similar, and then more than one of them, then none of them would really be gods because they could all outdo the others. But when there's one god things make sense. And I think that's wrong because you can't really be totally powerful and totally good, otherwise you'd only be able to do the totalest good thing or whatever, so you wouldn't really have power because you can't choose anything."

"The book is a bit misleading, yes," said Jaime. "Supposing we only call something God if it has unrivalled power, yes, it is difficult to believe there are more than one of them. But was Nanabos ever worshiped as a god, or was he considered something we have lost the word for?"

"And you're saying, if there's maybe only one God, he...or it," Francisco amended at an eye roll from Beatriz, "or whatever, if we said a god is something that can do whatever then there's only one. But if it chooses to do the good thing every time, things can make sense. Right?"

Jaime shrugged.

"But that doesn't even...I thought you were a polytheist? Or a polywhateverist?"

Jaime shrugged.

"So what do you believe?"

"I believe," said Jaime, "that wantonly hijacking toll roads is not the most productive way of improving society."

"Well you're no fun."

Call it strengthening our position, call it a desperation win, call it a plain old beatdown. Whatever you want to say, it was a much needed moral victory for the Knights, as they dismantled Sargossa, 6-0. "It was quite a glorious sight to see," said manager Mag Aonghusa. "Everyone clicked, and the Sargossan defense looked astonished. All the bounces went our way, there is nothing else you can say about that."

The match opened up to the roaring crowd of 68,500 that packed into Stade de Montagne, as Sargossa were the first with the ball. They made little progression, and even fewer shot attempts, as the time of possession clearly swung in favor of the Knights. With the ball consistently in the Sargossan half, the Knights took a great number of shots on goal, putting the Sargossan keeper under constant duress. The Knights broke through in the 11th minute, as a poorly cleared ball landed in front of David Schultz-Eklund 20 yards out from goal. He dribbled around the defender, had a look on goal and took the shot. The keeper took a dive in the direction, but at the last second a Sargossan defender inadvertently got in the way of the ball, causing it to ricochet into the vastly open net. Saugeais were up 1-0, and the Sargossan began to unravel, bickering at whose fault it was. In the 20th minute, Saugeais doubled their lead with a classic strike from Olsen, who blasted the ball in from 16 yards out and added to his already immense goal count. In the 32nd minute, a mental error from the Sargossans caused them to throw a hard tackle inside their own penalty box, causing a foul to be called and a penalty kick awarded to Saugeais. Olsen stepped up to take the shot, focusing on nothing but the ball. He ran up and struck it, not as clean as he wanted it to, but the ball bounced off the underside of the crossbar and across the line to give the Knights a comfortable 3-0 lead. Rounded out the first half scoring was Dietmar Öztürk 1 minute into stoppage time. Öztürk managed to corral a ball that the keeper dove to knock away, leaving the net open for a split second. He skillfully curved the ball around the near post and away from the crawling keeper, giving Saugeais a much needed breather of a game.

"4-0 at half time, couldn't ask for anything better," said manager Aonghusa. "Of course, there was still another half left to be played, and since we had the game well in hand, I took Olsen off for Kuzman. Yes, I know Olsen was sitting on a brace, but his legs would be better suited for when we face Vilita" The second half saw Saugeais continue on with their attacks, but the shots started to get wild, like they were too antsy at getting more goals. The team managed to calm down after subbing off John Barker, the cause of the agitated state of the team, for Philippe Lyon at the hour mark. Very soon, the goals so come back. In the 69th minute, Saugeais had a corner kick ready to be taken by expert Sasha Krause. Swining in a low line drive, the ball was met by the head of Schultz-Eklund, who angled the ball downward, bouncing under the keeper's reach and in for the score. Rounding out the scoreline was Philippe Lyon, who received his first ever international goal in the 81st minute.

"I wouldn't say we were out there to humiliate them, that's just never the case when we play," said Aonghusa after the match. "We just want to win, and it's very unfortunate that Sargossa had to experience that kind of defeat. Myself and my squad have had many of these types of losses previously. It's nothing you should dwell on for too long, or it will effect your play for the next match. For us, this will give the team a much needed boost going into the final qualifier."

So it comes down to this. Saugeais will once again be taking on the Jungle Cats of Vilita, this time in the final match of qualifying, where the winner will move to the playoff round. If Saugeais manage to scrape out a draw (surprisingly, something the Knights haven't had this cycle), they still move on due to a higher goal differential. But the Knights aren't playing for ties; they going for the win. "In it to win it, that's what they say right?" said Amaechi Olsen in the press conference. "You'll be sure to see our A game out there in the match."

PAIR OF VICTORIES LEAVES PALADINS, URCHINS LAST PAIR ON THE DANCE FLOOR

Playoff dreams come down to final match against Western Cuba

ON THE ROAD WITH THE PALADINS - A 1-0 win at Camwood and a surprising dominant offensive performance at home in a 3-0 rout of Baltskandio have left the Paladins in control of their fates heading into the final matchday, against a Western Cuba side that showed tremendous form throughout qualifiers, but didn't have quite enough in the tank to stay relevant through the final matchday. Kaghazda and Pazhujebu, meanwhile, will be looking for revenge against a Baltskandio side that surprised everyone with a 1-0 upset over them back in matchday 9.

Lightning might strike twice, but nobody in the NMS camp is expecting it to. "We've got the tougher job ahead of us, no question," said André Vaillancourt-Bosquet, who finally broke out of a slump that had lasted for most of qualification with two goals in the last three matches, including one in last night's win over Baltskandio. "We could have put this away earlier, but we're still in good shape if we go out there and play at the level we know we're capable of.

Vaillancourt-Bosquet's anodyne "we could have put it away earlier" is easily the least charged statement out there on the subject of the four points the States left on the table against Armed Bears and West Guinea on matchdays 10 and 11. Calls from the sports media for wholesale changes in the roster, coaching or both have already begun, despite qualifiers not yet being over. Valdemont sports radio doyen Michel Beaubois was heard calling for the heads of Ed and Denny Roy, stating that "21 goals in 17 matches is a goddamned joke" and that blame ought to fall squarely on the heads of those responsible for "finding the back of the stinking net." Greg Huntsman, sports-page editor at the Moncton Sands Daily Fax, has called for the panel of eight faceless Ministry of Morale bureaucrats to be replaced by a more conventional coaching structure regardless of the outcome in the Western Cuba match, saying that "it's not surprising that the Paladins have look like a confusing, amorphous blob on the pitch, since the players aren't sure whose hollering they ought to listen to."

Should the Paladins screw this one up, Huntsman and Beaubois will have plenty of company in their angry mob. The rest of us, excluding our nations' pitchfork and torch vendors, will be holding our breath for the final outcome against Western Cuba.

INJURY REPORT

Christian Ponder will be available off the bench, according to the Ministry of Morale bureaucrats.
