The sun shone brightly through the gap in the curtains, illuminating the back of a young mans head. Despite himself being asleep, it gave him a comforting source of warmth. Any moment now he would sub-consciously roll over and the uncomfortable sensation of direct sunlight on his eyelids would awaken him from his light sleep. Sure enough this was the case and he opened his eyes after retreating his head to a shadier spot. At first he was dazed sluggish, as was the usual case when he first arose in the mornings. The young man took a moment to rub his tired, hazy eyes before reaching to his bedside clock. As he did he leaned back with his elbow on the pillow. He squinted nonchalantly at the date and time. 7:42. It was Saturday and his rugby team, the Silver Coast Pirates, had their last match before the Christmas break in the season. He sat up gingerly, not wishing to leave the cozy confines of his bed. There was no choice however, he could not miss this game. He picked up his kit bag and stuffed in his boots, gum shield, jersey, socks and shorts. He zipped up the cover on the bag and stared momentarily at the name embroidered on it. It read "P. Donald". He shuffled quietly out of his room to the bathroom. He washed his face with cold water to rid himself of the remaining tiredness that dragged him down like a lead weight. After brushing his teeth he returned to his room and dressed himself in the team tracksuit. After clothing himself he descended the stairs and entered the kitchen. The sound of his mother making porridge and the breakfast show on the radio greeted him. He sheepishly mumbled a hello to her, she did like wise while handing him a bowl of porridge with one hand and stirring the remaining contents of the pot after adding milk. He sat at the table and casually ate his porridge. While he sat he listened to the radio. It was always the same. The repetitive doom and gloom of the economic crisis. Once he had finished his porridge he placed his bowl soaking in the sink and filled his bottle with water. He kissed his mother on the cheek and left.

The club was only 5 minutes away and there was no hurry so he opted to walk. As he did he took in his all too familiar surroundings. The green metal fence buried in ivy, save the tips of each pole, the semi detached houses on either side of the grass that separated his street from the next. It was a quite morning. It would not be so when he returned from the match. The Flanagan children would take care of that. Soon he came to the gate of the club. At the clubhouse doors were 3 other members of the team. They were Grant "the Executioner" Steven, Frank North and Peter Dodd. Frank and Peter were friends of his brother and were a year his senior. He got on with them well. Grant was the captain. His nickname came from his bossy attitude and short temper. Unlike Grant, Peter and Frank, like himself, were here early out of anticipation of the scouts. There had been talk in the dressing rooms a month ago, shortly after New Sydney became independent, that scouts looking for players from the national side at the world cup would be present at the game. By now most members of the team had discarded the notion as genuine and more as a technique to get the team training harder. The young man had not. He had indeed trained harder for the month but he always had a nagging feeling that there wasn't much use as the New Sydney Waratahs from the A-League would form nearly the entire starting line up and bench. But he kept going. Soon more people arrived, including his brother Allen. He greeted the group and joined the discussion. At 20 to 8 the bus arrived and departed soon after. The trip to rival club Townsville Titans took just under a half an hour. When they arrived the opposition were out warming up. Philip scanned the grounds for anyone that may have been a scout. It was not easy to guess in a crowd of people you did not know. The team gathered in the changing rooms and got into their kits. Grant gave the usual speech after the coach. After 15 minutes they were on the pitch and ready to go. Philip was starting scrum half and his brother the out half. The referee blew the whistle and Allen kicked-off.

The game was over. It had been tough and they narrowly escaped with the win. Just as the team gathered into a huddle, the coach called to Allen, Philip and Peter. He gestured to us to come over. He was with a man they had not seen before. Philip was hopeful that he was the scout. He and Allen glanced at each other smiling. They came to a halt. They were also met by the Titans winger. The man introduced himself. He was the scout. It was good new. They had been selected to train with the national side for the world cup, and hopefully secure a spot. They were given instructions to meet in the capital tomorrow a George Mortlock Stadium. Philip and his brother were delighted on the way home. He knew he was right about the scouts and his awareness had paid off.

Polar Islandstates Rugby Union Roster

After last tournament's disappointment, Coach Pep van Housengamm lost his job, and was replaced by the enigmatic and publicity-courting Jesper Rasmussen. He has promised wide changes to the team, and the dissolving of the old state-team league in rugby union has brought about something of a revolution in the sport in the Federation. Teams have been formed, rivalries have been springing up, and teams like Northbrook Harlequins and Citizens RFC have produced some very strong performances in the international domestic rugby tournaments. As such, the sweeping changes have been brought in, and only the captain, Anders Rosenmeyer, and winger Iulian van Keirrison remain from the previous tournament squad.

Coach: Jesper Rasmussen

1. Loosehead Prop - Artemiusz Sjoberg (27 - Citizens RFC)
2. Hooker - Sebastian Oftedahl (24 - Jan Mayen Harriers)

Ares-y-Penthesilea Rugby Union Roster

Students and radical missionaries from two universities in Oasirica set sail to start a mission in the new world long before the time wall went up. Long after it came down, they finally found a spot. The twin cities of Ares and Penthesilea, named for the universities they left behind, are situated either side of the mouth of the River Nekron. A learned people, they nonetheless make an attempt to stay healthy, so are submitting this rather weedy-looking side for the world cup. There are only two rugby sides in the twin-cities, RFC Ares, and RFC Penthesilea, so team bonding shouldn't be a problem. Not as long as they don't enter a deep philosophical argument, anyway...

Coach: Kyriakos Athanasius

1. Loosehead Prop - Stefanos Agapios (28 - RFC Ares)
2. Hooker - Vitus Michelakakis (27 - RFC Ares)
3. Tighthead Prop - Ampelius Argyris (31 - RFC Penthesilea)
4. Lock - Xenocrates Spiros (32 - RFC Ares)
5. Lock - Joakim Dimitriou (28 - RFC Ares)
6. Blindside Flanker - Emil Floros (27 - RFC Penthesilea)
7. Openside Flanker - Italo Papastathopoulos (Captain) (29 - RFC Penthesilea)
8. Number Eight - Hizkiah Metaxas (19 - RFC Penthesilea)
9. Scrum Half - Yehoshafat Floros (28 - RFC Ares)
10. Fly-Half - Thanatos Zabat (29 - RFC Ares)
11. Left-Wing - Mark Xanthopoulos (27 - RFC Penthesilea)
12. Inside Centre - Hesiod Michelakos (28 - RFC Penthesilea)

Barney was excited. Almost as excited as the time his dad had returned early from work, took him to the "Power Rangers" pantomime and had bought him lots of sweeties and a red ranger costume for his 4th birthday. It was his birthday again. Now he was "this many years old" as he would tell his family and friends while holding up a hand with all his fingers held up. He was going to have a big chocolate cake with jam and chocolate icing and cream and Smarties on top. His mum had made him toast soldiers with a hard boiled egg, his favourite breakfast in the whole universe. His dad then took him out to play with his new rugby ball. Barney was good at rugby. He could run faster than his dad and push him out of the way with a small touch and score lots and lots of tries. Even the big men at dads rugby club could not push him easily or score lots of tries. He must have been the best rugby player in the whole world. When they had finished playing rugby they went inside and watched Barney's favourite TV shows together. An hour later all his aunties and uncles and cousins and friends all started coming to the house with lots of big presents. Barney and the other children his age all went to play on the bouncy castle his dad hired. Nobody could bounce as high as him. He was the best at everything. Even eating the yucky green vegetables at dinner. But there would be no green vegetables today because he was having pizza. After a long time bouncing higher than anyone else he went inside to play with his cars. When he grew up he would have lots of real cars instead of toy ones. He zoomed around the track his dad made and, even though his cousin Ivan said he didn't, he won the super mega best driver cup. At 2 o'clock his mum called everyone into the kitchen for lunch. He loved pizza. It was much nicer than the yucky green vegetables at dinner. After all the pizza was gone, mum turned off the lights but there was a glow in the hall. Then everyone started singing:

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Barney,
Happy birthday to you

As they sang mum and dad brought in his big chocolate cake with jam and chocolate icing and cream and Smarties on top. There were 5 candles lit on top of it. Barney had never seen so many candles on a cake. When they placed the cake in front of him, the guests stopped singing and began giving him 3 cheers and clapped when he blew out all the candles in one go, without help of course. His mum helped him slice the first piece of cake though, but that was because knives were sharp and dangerous and he was not allowed to use them except when helped cutting his own cake. He took a bite. It was super-duper yummy. It was the best cake ever. Nobody had a better cake than he did. Everyone like his cake more than their own and were all done soon. After all the cake his mum brought him over a present but it was very small and looked like it was just a card. He was now sad. It was the only present he was allowed to open while the guests were here and it was a card. He sat on his dads lap in case there was a word he couldn't read. He opened the envelope and took out a birthday card with a funny picture of a cat in a party hat with a badge with the number 5 on it. He opened the card and read allowed. "To Barney, have a very happy birthday. With love from mum and dad." He was very disappointed. But then before he could look sad his dad whispered in his ear. "Look in the envelope again Barney. Barney thought this was ridicululsusss (he liked that word, but could never get it right). He opened it again and took out some pieces of paper with lots of words he could not read. He turned to his dad and asked him to read it. "Rugby World Cup 18, Darmen. Official match ticket. The Kiaser Colonies versus Soviet Canuckistan, Group E, Lyons Stadium, Eau Claire. Kick-off 7:30 pm. Se-" his dad was about to read out the seat numbers but Barney turned and asked, "are you me and mum going to see a world cup game?" Dad replied, "Not just one son, all of The Kiaser Colonies games." Barney burst with excitement. He started screaming and running around the house. When he came back he hugged his parents tightly. This was as good as his last birthday now.

It had been a week and 2 days since his birthday. Barney was catching a plane to Darmen for the rugby world cup. It was his first time going on a plane and he was really excited. He waddled along side his parents, struggling under the weight of the suitcase he had packed, which he insisted of carrying all the way to and off the plane. This resulted in a small tantrum at check in when he was forced to leave his bag with the mean-but-pretty lady at the desk. His parents made very sure that his bag would get on the plane safely. Barney wasn't so certain. Soon he was back to his cheery excited mood. His parents had told him Darmen was an hour behind The Kiaser Colonies. Did that mean the flight would take him back in time? If it could he wabted to meet his granddad, who had died before he was born. Then he could get a birthday present from him too. But that needed to wait for after the rugby. As he and his parents sat down on the plane, his mother handed him his power rangers back pack that had his colouring pencils, colouring books and stories for his mum to read to him at bed time. Straight away he opened his pencils and his favourite colouring book. The dinosaur one he got for Christmas. He liked dinosaurs. He went to the first one he had not finished. A stegosaurus and a triceratops. He coloured the stegosaurus purple with green spines on his back and the triceratops blue with orange horns. By the time he finished the picture the plane was just about to take off. It started to move slowly. He waved goodbye to the airport then sat back. The plane got faster and faster until he felt it lift up and a feeling like he was being pushed back into his chair met him. After a minute this stopped. He looked out and saw the tops of the clouds. Barney stared at them in amazement. He had never been so high up before. He sat back again and started colouring again. He had along way to go. His dad said the flight would take ??? To get to Darmen. He wondered if he could stay awake for that long with it already being 6 o'clock. He only had an hour and a half till his bed time.

It had been 2 days since they had landed in Darmen. He had fun on the plane and in a playground near the house hotel they were staying in. But his parents had taken him to look at old buildings which he was not allowed to run in and did not like the smell of. Today though they were instead going to The Kiaser Colonies first match of the world cup. He could not say the name of the other team, but that just meant that nobody could support them so everyone would go for The Kiaser Colonies. His parents were making sandwiches to take to the match to eat. 5 minutes later they had left the hotel to catch the bus to the stadium. Barney was a little frightend on the bus as he did not know anyone but his mum and dad. Some of the people were scary looking too. He spent the trip holding his parents arms as he sat between them. When they arrived at the stadium they went through a gate after showing their tickets to a man. Then they went to their seats. His dad told him that the match was going to start in 10 minutes and took him to the toilet. When they got back there was only 5 minutes to go, he could hardly wait.

(OOC: the idea of this is its from the childs point of view so please don't mark me down for things like "ridicululsusss" or repeated "and" instead of commas. Also the ??? for flight time is because I'm waiting for CC to give me an estimated time [it's a rushmore thing])

TyMason vs Mangolana
Score:0-8

TyMason had lost their first ever Rugby World Cup game. They only conceded a try, with a missed conversion, and a penalty.Other than that, they were sublime.

Starting right from the off,TyMason's fans had every single reason to cheer as Jeremy Young started to run across the sidelines, playing passes to Thomas Reik and Rod Tyler. He then seemed to limp.Eventually the defenders caught up and tackled him,He stayed on the ground for quite a while after the tackle.Something surely was wrong. He was stretchered off the field with what doctors believed was a torn hamstring. This meant that Young's World cup career as of now would just be 4 minutes long. His replacement,Glen Hopton, was nowhere near Young's skill level, and eventually TyMason started to fall back. It was only the defensive bond of Quentin Davis and Don Relui that kept Mangolana at bay until half-time.

Going into the second half, only 5 minutes had gone by before the game had its first sin bin. Relui was sent there after kicking Mangolana's hooker after a harsh tackle.Luckily, the hooker was alright. The resulting penalty saw the game go 3-0 in Mangolana's favour. With Relui gone, the Davis brothers,Quentin and Gerrick had a hard time trying to keep Mangolana at bay, eventually letting in another try before Relui returned. That's how the game stayed until full time, with Barston Lowe almost getting 3 points back for TyMason at the 69th minute.

It was a tough day for TyMason overall. They had let in 8 points,a reasonable result, but scored none, which means they're at the bottom of the table for now.

Triimoria's first ever rugby union match took place today, in the prestigious eighteenth Rugby Union World Cup. They played Krytenia, second seeds in the group and lost 11-0. Only one try was scored throughout the game, but two penalties added to Krytenia's score.

Krytenia were on top for the whole of the first half and it was only a matter of time until they scored. They finally managed this on the twenty-third minute. Krytenia drew in Triimoria's defence with pick-and-go plays until they had overlap which their winger exploited for the try. This try was not converted due to it being scored in the far corner. Despite Krytenia controlling this half, Triimoria had a single period of play were they came very close to scoring. Triimoria managed to force Krytenia onto their line and were trying again and again to penetrate their line with forwards trying to barge through, but the ball was eventually turned over in a ruck, allowing the Krytenian fly half to boot the ball far up the field.

The second half was far more boring compared to the first. Krytenia dominated throughout, but failed to convert possession into try-scoring opportunities. Krytenia gathered another six points from two penalties. The first when Farmer's high tackle gave the Krytenian kicker a chance to score, which he duly did. The second when Johnson hit a ruck from the side. Krytenia were awarded the penalty, which, again was converted.

After this match Triimoria are bottom of their group. Hopefully the second match will bring a change of fortune.

Postby New Sydney » Fri Jan 20, 2012 12:04 pm

The rain pounded on the roof of the team hotel, creating an intense drumming sound that made it tough for Philip to sleep. The weather had been poor ever since they had arrived in New Sydney and national squad training was a nightmare. The pitch couldn't be any closer to water logged and handling at the start was poor. This was a big downside for him as he was a scrum half so handling would be crucial. It would be a tough contest between him and the New Sydney Waratahs scrum half for a spot. He turned face down into his pillow and covered his ears with the ends. It was noticeably quieter but hew would soon need to breath so it was not a permanent solution. In the end he was forced to just lie and wait.

When he woke next morning he was tired, he knew he would suffer at training today. His brother Allen and another Sliver Coast Pirates team mate, Peter Dodd, both remark that he was in a bad way. Sure enough when training began he was lacking his usual stamina and reactions. Once or twice he even mixed up his left and right when making a pass. When it was all over he knew he was beat. He would have to settle for reserves or no spot at all. He put his face in his hands. Why was life so unfair? An hour later he and the other members assembled in the conference room at the hotel in formal dress. The manager stood at the podium and readied himself to name the world cup squad. The crowd was brimming with journalists and TV crews. He sighed. His big chance at national, possibly international fame was blown by one nights bad sleep. The manager began with an introduction, thanking everyone for being here and congratulating the players on being selected for trials. Then he read out the team...

He couldn't believe it. He'd given the pass straight to his chest and he had not even got close to catching the ball. If they had got that ball he would have scored a try under the posts and they would have been right back in the match and at least got a bonus point. But now there was only 2 minutes of play time left and Polar Island States were winning 14-0 and had a scrum that had over powered their scrum. They held the ball at the back of the scrum for just long enough not to be called time wasting, then took the ball into a ruck with half their back line going in to secure the ball. Again they ran down the clock, the referee announced time was up. The scrum half threw the ball deep into the pocket to the fly half who booted the ball into the stands of Aris Field. Polar Island States 14-0 New Sydney. All in all he didn't think that was too bad for a first game. He had passed well and made a couple pressurizing runs. He would have liked for the team to have scored but 14-0 was better than 100-7. The defence was near perfect and once they got their attack going they would be perfect and could so easily beat any other team in the group. All was not yet lost for New Sydney. The coach was not overjoyed but at the same time wasn't unhappy with the result. His speech started with some encouraging words but went on to stress the importance of good handling and creative attacking play. No matter what he said it was still impressive that what was essentially a weakened New Sydney Waratahs team only conceded 2 tries against a side of the standard of Polar Island States thought Philip. With that in mind the team trained with confidence all week for the next match against Homelands Our. With only 3 games to go, winning was vital to qualification hopes.

To: James van der Beek, Rhodesiah Rugby President
From: Mikkel van der Merwe, Rhodesiah National Rugby Manager
Subject: World Cup Report
Date: 12/01/21 (02:29)

James,

As much as I would love to ride the coattails of our previous World Cup, I must bring to light the challenge that faces us in the upcoming tournament in Darmen. My boys have only just arrived in Eau Claire and there's already been a match in our group. They're sick, cold and miserable. Lord knows I want to go up against Polar Islandstates with my team in this bad of a condition but there's nothing we can do at this stage. Before us lies the toughest challenge in the group stage, and I'm honestly not at all confident we can play to the calibre that the Sables mustered last time around. Maybe I can place my sickest in the scrum and see if they can infect the Polar players. We're going to need all the help we can get, even if it means playing a little sick dirty.

After that match will be Homelands our. My scouting team has done some deep digging and we haven't been able to find anything on this rather fresh squad to the World Cup. I know they won't be pushovers though, as everyone and their mother will want to try to knock off the top dog (or Sable) in group B. If push comes to shove I may put Rocky Makwanya in place of Norman Mhende. Norm's been having some trouble ever since his ACL surgery last year and I have a feeling the Polar Islandstates match will be the test we need to see if he can go the entire tournament. By this match I hope to have 2 wins so we can ease into our final two matches.

Match three will be against Politik who polished off Homelands our 16-6 in their opening match. They look to have a promising young squad after seeing them dominate from start to finish, but I have a feeling our experience and overall skill could prove to be the game changer. I'm not saying by any stretch we will win, but if we walk away from this match having won by less than 10 points, it will feel like a tremendous loss. After all, rugby is Rhodesiah's top sport and we'd hate to sully the good name of the Sables after finishing 2nd place in RWC17.

To end the group stage will be New Sydney. They had a tough 14-0 loss to Polar Islandstates to start their World Cup but I think that was just to shake the rust off. Early games can be hiccups for many teams (hopefully not for our boys) and this shouldn't be a slight against this scrappy squad. They seem to have enough clout with the Kiaser Colonies who famously predicted our early exit in the last World Cup, so I think we will have to leave our foot on the gas when we play New Sydney.

I'll be sure to have a courier send you a bottle of the local alcohol as a token of appreciation. The hotels this year are a dramatic improvement from what the union sprung for us last year!
