"So Liventia in a bit of a hole, 0-3."

"The only other teams to get off to that imperfect of a start are Brodskopolis, Patricant, Garon-Averia, and Camwood."

"Yeah, but Camwood are in a small group. And imperfect?"

"Well, yeah. They haven't won a single game!"

"Yeah, but that's pretty consistent. They're perfect at losing. Now if they were 1-5, that would be imperfect and bad."

"Well they can't be 1-5 yet, we're only three games in."

"Yeah, but--"

"Unless, by perfect, do you actually mean--"

"Don't even go there."

"How do you know where I was going?"

"I just do."

"All the games are over anyway, there's nothing to j-"

"I didn't say there was. It's like a...meta-jinx."

"Huh?"

"Just get to your stat of the day."

"Right. Okay. So another historically important, but kind of overrated, stat is--"

"Are you ever going to get to the good ones? The useful ones?"

"Well, yeah, but I figured people would want to--"

"We use the useful ones on the air! Who even listens to the postgame shows anyway? Hey, if you're listening, call in and tell us what you want to hear about. Let's do this empirically."

"Hey, you can't just--"

"Sure I can. Hello, you're on WTB."

"Hi this is Mina in Sestview!"

"Hi Mina. Why are you listening to us?"

"Cause I'm on the train and there's nothing else to do."

"You're on the train? So you've got a cell phone."

"Yeah."

"Doesn't it come with one of those brick smasher things?"

"Kirby," (Joanna interrupts), "you're supposed to keep people listening to us."

"Am I? I thought my job was to broadcast baseball games. Well that's done now. It's you who want good ratings so they hire you back to do your stupid thing--"

"We're gonna disperse the bleeping curse!"

"Yeah yeah yeah. Anyway--"

"Okay, Mina? Mina, are you still there?"

"Yeah, what's going--" (Mina starts)

"What's your favorite stat, Mina?"

"Your favorite?" (Kirby taunts) "I thought you were going to teach people something."

"Well, yeah, but--okay, never mind. Kirby, we're going to talk off the air."

Syvorjin News 24

Sakurakoku 300 111 001 - 7 (4-0)
Syvorji 021 000 010 - 4 (2-2)

Today, at the Thessenes Leshal Stadium, the Syvorjin National Team again lost to an older leader in the sport, Sakurakoku. As you see, we dealt with a humiliating defeat. Here we go for the highlights.

First Inning - Three home runs by Sakurakoku
Second Inning - 1 home run, 1 out of field run by Syvorji
Third Inning - 1 double + double by Syvorji, tied with Sakurakoku
Fourth Inning - 1 home run by Sakurakoku
Fifth Inning - 1 out of field run by Sakurakoku
Sixth Inning - 1 single + triple by Sakurakoku
Seventh Inning - Did we just hear crickets chirp? In other words, nothing here.
Eighth Inning - 1 out of field run by Syvorji
Ninth Inning - 1 home run by Sakurakoku

1 + 1 is 2, 2 + 1 is 3, and 3 + 1 is 4, which is the Syvorjin score. As for Sakurakoku, three plus one is four, and four plus one is five. Five plus one, obviously is six, and six plus one is seven, which is the points of Sakurakoku. With that, it had won. The amount of defeats and wins are humiliating, now at two losses and two wins respectively. We are really desperate now to get a spot in the qualifiers, just like we had done prior.

Courtney Curran’s Take:

So what’s up?! Amazing what’s happening across the border, isn’t it? There it was as the host of World Baseball Classic 19, and of our third championship, and now it has just ceased to exist. We can make jokes about Newmanistan, and reflect on the good and bad points of its history, but what that was to our west was a nation that was dominant in baseball. With them gone, the world needs a new nation to step up in its place and there are two three-time champions that are active in the tournament still: us and Qazox. Should that make us the two nations to look up to now for the rest of the world? Zwangzug doesn’t have the titles, but they have a glorious history. Milchama, once relevant in sports, does also sport a good history in baseball. For some of the younger readers who think I shouldn’t have just said that, ask your parents about the witty jabs at one another between us and them in the past. In World Baseball Classic 19, even though we won and it was our third title, you had some nations step forward, such as Saugeais, who advanced to the championship series. You had Sakurakoku have a strong run, and so did Churchma. All of that means that you could say that it was a transitional Classic, and perhaps this is where one of those nations is able to win the title. A lot of people see us the favorite because of the way other top ranked teams have fallen off the map for this Classic, but we don’t have big heads about it. While we want to win, look for the trend from Classic Nineteen to continue with the rising nations.

World Baseball Classic 20 takes us to a tiny nation known as Sportgirls. It almost reminds you of Cheergirls, and cheergirls are indeed sportgirls; don’t try to tell me that they’re not! But Sportgirls, though small, was created first! It makes you wonder if we’ll be a fan favorite come playoff time. It’ll be interesting to learn about their people, and maybe see if there is anything that we can do to help them thrive as a nation even more then they are doing now. I’m still wondering about these stadiums though as the information we have been given on them so far cannot be accurate. According to what I was given, the two stadiums don’t even combine to have a capacity of 10,000. I mean, that can't be right?! Can it?!

After four games, we’ve won thrice and have lost to Sakurakoku, a nation that I think is a major threat to win this Classic. Among those wins, was our nine home run barrage against Syvorji, in winning 13-5. We won’t be confused for the normally powerless Zwangzug Zebras, but it was fun to watch all of those balls leaving the yard as we don’t normally rely so much on the long ball. You’ll notice though that Syvorji gives up a ton of homers on a game by game basis, and as a pitcher myself, I can’t imagine what it must be like to pitch for that team. Could you imagine how many homers Johnny Stryker would have if he went up against them? Brooke Houghton had three of our nine home runs, becoming the first Cassadagan player to hit three in one game; and something that only happens three or so times in the league, combined. Against Beldonia, the juice was apparently removed from the ball, and we got back to scoring in our more conventional manner, with a homer only accounting for one of our runs: Brooke again, a solo shot in the 4th. That puts us at 3-1, and Crotunda will be next. Don’t know a ton about them, but based on their lone report, they seem to know their place against the better teams!

Pablo and Pablo

Pablo M:
Pablo R:

" Tell the folks watching our show how the Cubans did in today's Match Day. "

" Well were still undefeated after beating Hippostania by a score of 10-8. However though it was our tightest game yet, and while the offense played solid putting in 10 runs, pitching put up a scare along with the rest of Western Cuba's defense creating 4 errors during the game. With 3 of them resulting in runs scored. "

" So who saved the day for Western Cuba? "

" I would have to say our closer Rodger Sekera. Yesterday he proved why he's the best closer Western Cuba has to offer, and one of the best in the world. Entering in the 9th inning like usual he struck out all 3 batters in fashion. With the last two batters striking out looking. He had an incredible game, and there's a reason he was given a win after the game. "

" So you just said the offense had a great game, who were our standouts? "

" Well today I have three players. First Baseman Andon Balk, Left Fielder Brody Ukhtomskii, and Shortstop Roberto Ramos. Balk had some great hit's today nailing one over the left field fence, and also hitting a double. Ukhtomskiii had two double's, and made a fantastic catch in left field. One of the few great defensive plays by Western Cuba in the game. Finally while Roberto Ramos did create an error in the game allowing a man on third to score for Hippostania he made up for it. Ramos homered during the game, and had two doubles. Creating a great day at the plate. "

" Alright, yesterday I described one word of our team so far. What do you think of ours? "

" I would have to say quiet, you always hear talk of the Qazox, Milchama, Cassadaigua, Saugeais teams in this classic but nothing much about Western Cuba. Perhaps it's because were in a weak group or the fact that our team is very young, however though I'll have to add to the quiet part. Were quiet but deadly. Our team is very good, and the way were playing right now anything but winning our group stage is a major setback. "

" So what improvements do we have to make during this classic? "

" Our defense needs to get better. You can not create 4 errors during a game, with 3 of them creating runs. That could of lost us the game, and we have no excuse for that. Our starting pitching rotation has done good things and bad things so far, and needs to let loose the bad things, however though our bullpen except for Match Day 3 has just been terrible. While Stephan Nemecek and Drew Munoz are young, we except better things from them. "

" Alright that is a wrap for today's coverage on the Western Cuban National Team, anything you'll like to say about other teams in the WBC? "

" I have a few. "

" Then feel free to tell us, we still got time. "

" Well, our dark horse contenders in this WBC suffered there first WBC loss today, losing to Mantwenic by a score of 7-5. However the Kytler Peninsula shouldn't put there heads down though. Mantwenic is now 3-0 and is a very good team also. I expect the Kytler Peninsula to rebound from there loss and win there next game. I'll also like to announce the remaining undefeated teams in this classic here they are.

" Cotdelapoms, us, Armorgames, Sakurakoku, Lycrabon, Bergnovinaia, Sportsgirls and Mantwenic. "

" Any of these surprise you? "

" Yes quite a few of them. I didn't expect Armorgames, Sportsgirls, and Mantwenic to be in this group so far. However though far all three of them have played great and deserve undefeated starts. "

" What team in this list will be next to lose? "

" Well at least one of these teams will lose. Lycrabon, and Sportsgirls will face off against each other in Match Day Five. Armorgames also faces off against a tough opponent in Milchama, and Mantwenic faces off against last classic's runner up Saugeais. "

" What's your predictions for these games? "

" Well I got a list of them right here, let's show the fans it. "

Lycrabon defeats Sportsgirls- As much as I like Sportsgirls so far in this classic, Lycrabon is the better time and will come out victorious.

Milchama defeats Armorgames- The streak will stop dead here against Milchama.

Cotdelapoms destroys Eeupmeduckland- To be honest this isn't going to be a close game

Sakurakoku defeats Beldonia- The Sakurakoku National Team will easily take this one.

Bergnovinaia Bye

Saugeais defeats Mantwenic- Saugeais has rebounded off of there opening day loss, and should be able to take the win in this match up.

" Alright that's a wrap for today's show. Make sure to watch tomorrow's game when the Cubans face off against West Libya at West Libya. Starting Pitcher for the game will be Igor Alampiev. We'll see you all tomorrow. "

Lycrabon 401 111 100 - 9 (4-0)
Cyborg Holland 302 010 000 - 6 (1-3)

CYBORG HOLLAND -- Bring on the hosts.

For the first time in this Classic, the starter did NOT go more than five innings. Zachary Francis lasted only two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs before he left. But then, Brianna Bruce didn’t see the end either. We’ll get to that later.

Spotted with a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Francis allowed a walk, a triple and a home run. We got some comments from him after the game; we, however, can’t print them. Five consecutive Blue Jay batters got on base in the first - Chad Price, Cliff Mayo, Sean McCormick (via walk), JC Tyson (hit by pitch, driving in the first run), and Jeremy Kramer. He hit a bases-clearing triple to make it 4-0 Jays. Mitchell Johnston came in and pitched 2-plus innings himself. In the fourth, JC Tyson gave Lycrabon a 5-4 lead with a solo homer. Single runs in the fourth through seventh innings sealed the deal. Leroy Harrison picked up the win in relief.

Miss Bruce was ejected in the fifth, after discussing balls and strikes with the umpire. “I’m not done with that [expletive] just yet,” said Brianna after the game. He was [expletive] Zachary (Francis), was [expletive] Mitch (Johnston), and he ran me for calling him out on [expletive] Leroy (Harrison). It isn’t over.

Qazox wins on walk-off in Marsten Debut.

It took 10 innings, and 2 rallies against the NMS bullpen, but Qazox' interim manager Shane Marsten got his first win under his belt. Erica deSentis' 3-run walk off HR in the botttom of the 10th came after NMS scratched home a run in the top of the 10th due to a wild pitch by winning pitcher Valerie Durante. Qazox had every starting fielder have at least a hit, and all but Thomas knocked in a run.

But the bigger story is the continued struggles of the Qazoxian starting rotation. Julia Stanton did last 6 2/3rd innings, but gave up a 5-4 lead on NMS 1B's 3-run HR to make it 7-5. Qazox did tie it up in the 8th on back-to-back doubles by Brian Desormeaux and pinch-hitter Carly Germaine.

In the 10th, after getting the lead once again, NMS's closer came in to shut down the Eagls, but allowed a lead off double to Jayde Sinclair, got Carl Holmes to pop out to left and then walked Emma Flint to get to deSentis; who had grounded into 2 inning ending double plays earlier in the game. But deSentis sent the 1st pitch just over the Blue Monster in right to give Qazox the walk-off.

Up next for Qazox is a trip to (1-2) Michael VII. A win would keep Qazox a game behind group leader Bergnovinaia, with their rematch to come in 3 days.

"And Hedegger nails it down! What a spectacular finish!"

"The non-bullpen keeping it close, too close, but somehow the Zebras come up with the runs in the ninth. And I'm sure there's one question on everybody's mind right now."

"Please no superstition about the bullpen, I can't handle that."

"I wasn't going to...oh whatever, let's just replay the top of the ninth."

"Well, not all of it. It's long."

"Yeah, but you know what I mean."

"...the sign from Palmer. Northrup sends one low, very low, Sherman--cracks ahold of it anyway! Laces it to the wall for a standing double, they'll hold her...

...Stove-Happs fouls off another. The pitch is--swung on and missed. Strike three, one away."

"He was swinging from the knees there. Got ugly..."

"...Horiant will send this deep, Cadby settles under it, makes the catch. Tagging is Sherman, she'll have to stop at third."

"Have the Explorers completely changed their roster from last time, incidentally?"

"I think the country has completely changed everything. Nomenclature-wise...

Dessmeyer pulls it deep down the line. Sheffield's trying for it but Sherman has easily scored, Zebras take the lead! Dessmeyer will wind up at second...

Fitery-Wiss skies this one--it falls in there! They're gonna send Dessmeyer, the play at the plate--not in time! An insurance run of all things for the Zebras."

"They'll need it. With this bullpen?"

"Is there any "bullpen' you would feel comfortable giving a lead to for Zwangzug?"

"No. But that's baseball, isn't it? You can never be sure?"

"Brune ain't. She's sending up Maebring now, trying to keep the rally alive. If this backfires it'll look like she was just rubbing it in."

"A Zebra win is not traditionally the definition of "backfire"..."

"...draws a walk. That'll be all for Northrup, and about time too...

Lester deals. Juriand will poke it into left, that'll score Fitery-Wiss! The Zebras just keep on adding...

...Tanner to Lester, and the Explorers finally get out of this inning. We'll see whether Zwangzug can blow it again..."

"So as I was trying to say, we've sat in this country all day, what the bleep is that on their flag? It looks so...evocative, like...something. Anyway."

Crotunda lost again this time to a bunch of women. Just because cassadaigua is all women it doesnt mean they are bad and they actually won the last championship so women can play baseball too. our team found out the hard way today.

Syvorji News 24

Syvorji 005 010 110 - 8 (3-2)
Patricant 201 100 000 - 4 (1-4)

Today, Syvorji easily defeated Patricant 8-4. Out of 5 qualifiers, this is our third win against any team. While we don't know if we will win a spot, we highly think we will either barely got in a spot, and the season ends early, or we will go into a spot, in third place.

And now, for the highlights!

2 out-of-field runs by Patricant - First Inning
1 single + triple by Patricant, 3 home runs, 2 out of field runs by Syvorji - Third Inning
1 home run by Patricant - Fourth Inning
1 double + double by Syvorji - Fifth Inning
1 out of field run by Syvorji - Seventh Inning
1 triple + single by Syvorji - Eighth Inning

So, 5 + 1 = 6, and 6 + 1 is obviously 7. Thus, 7 + 1 = 8, which is our points. For Patricant, 2 + 1 = 3, and 3 + 1 is 4. Thus, by that simple formula, Syvorji won 8 to 4. Such a shame, really, that Patricant got only 4 points, half our total. As for the total score, eight plus four is twelve, meaning twelve points were scored BY both sides.

Such a shame that tomorrow is our day off, so as we sign off, we wish the Syvorjin National Team luck on Matchday Five. From Seung Nang, Syvorjin News 24, Sportgirls.

Pablo and Pablo

Pablo M:
Pablo R:

" Well today's game was quite awful. I really don't want to talk about it. Let's make this quick huh? "

" Don't blame you, watching that game today was painful. The only reason I kept the eyes one the screen was because of loyalty and the game being somewhat close. "

" Well fans if you didn't know yet our boys lost today against West Libya by a score of 6-8. All I have to say about this game was that is was ugly. "

" I couldn't say agree more. Igor Alampiev just had a terrible game pitching, allowing five runs in the first three innings before being benched with Drew Munoz coming in to relieve for him. "

" You have to give credit to Drew Munoz a little though. He played his heart out till the 7th inning. Almost allowing for Western Cuba to come back until he gave up three runs. "

" I wouldn't put the whole blame on him, there were two errors made in that inning that were preventable which cost us at the end. "

" I guess your right, so Drew Munoz was the only Cuban player who had a good day today. "

" Exactly, what I'm thinking, and fans if you didn't watch the game your probably thinking that how did we do terrible on offense. After all we scored 6 runs. Well guys 4 of those runs were on errors. Yes errors! That's nuts. However though this may be good in the end for us. "

" What makes you think of that? "

" Well after the first four games, I think we got a little to full of ourselves, we took a little to much advantage in playing in a weak group and it came back to stab us in the back. Now that we got that lose dealt towards us I think it will be a vital wake up call. "

" Hopefully so, but before we finish the show for today let's reflect on the rest of the WBC. "

" Why of course. Yesterday was quite a day for the remaining undefeated teams left in the WBC. 4 undefeated teams lost yesterday. Us, Cotdelapoms, Sportsgirls and Armorgames suffered defeats yesterday. Saugeais, and Civil Citizentry both suffered loses yesterday. Reducing there records to 2-2, and 2-3.

" Alright one final thing, what team has surprised you the most so far, and what team has gone way below expectations? "

" Well the team that has surprised me the most so far with a positive performance has been Sportsgirls. With a such a small population, and not being a well known baseball team they've done well so far. Now for the team that has gone below expectations I have two of them. First I thought of Delaclava who currently is suffering a 1-4 record. Which is way below there expectations. However though there is one time that I think has expressed even more disappointment so far this classic, and that is Saugeais. Being runner up's and placed in a relatively weak group stage they shouldn't be at .500 right now. "

" Well that's a wrap of our show today, tomorrow is an off day for the WBC so sit back and relax, and spend some time with your family. We'll see you guys Monday. "

Sportgirls	100	202	000 - 5 (4-1)
Lycrabon 101 821 03X - 16 (5-0)

ST. CATHERINE -- The Blue jays are in the driver’s seat.

Competitive four three innings, the sellout crowd had a consistent chant of “OVER-RATED” for the final five innings in a 16-5 rout. A perfect 5-0 at the halfway mark, winning out will clinch a high seed in the playoffs. “With a hitting display like that, even Junior (Garry Barnett, Jr., controversial pitcher for Lycrabon’s first two WBC teams) could get nine in,” laughed Brianna Bruce.

Cliff Mayo started the Blue jay scoring by answering a leadoff Sportgirl home run with one of his own. Bruce Barrett eventually pitched a complete game, with fifteen strikeouts compared to five walks. Jonathan Short then led off the third with a home run, his third followed by a two spot in the top of the fourth.

Then the fun started.

The bottom of the fourth was a nightmare for the hosts, and a statement for Lycrabon. Sean McCormick and JC Tyson hit singles, followed by a Jeremy Kramer walk. Bruce Barrett made his statement at the plate with a towering grand slam into the river, followed by solo shots by both Short and Gene Welch. Barrett came back out and set the ladies down 1-2-3 in the fifth, and Kramer hit a shot down the right field line to make it 11-3.
A Carl Maynard triple scored Gene Welch to push the lead to 12-3.

In the sixth, manager Frank Thompson emptied the bench. Following the fina two runs Sportgirls scored, Andrew Garrett hit a triple to score Alonzo Osborn for a 13-5 lead. The Blur Jays put three up in the eighth to set the final.

Qazox pitchng woes continue, but hodl on to defeat Michael VII.

John Matusj lasted 5 2/3 innings and earned the win; but as had the other Qazoxian starters at this WBC, he didn't look good in doing so. Matusj allowed 5 runs on 11 hits, and only had 3 strikeouts, two of which were his opposite number Carl Bonseph.

The Qazox bullpen, who need either raises or one of the starters to last more than 6 innings, did pitch 3 1/3 shutout innings and Robert Tokadden added his 2nd save of the WBC by getting a 1-2-3 ninth.

Offensively, this was the most complete game Qazox has had, as every starter had at least 1 hit, with Carl Holmes braking out of his slump by going 4-5 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.

Up next after tommorrow's off day is a rematch with Bergnovinaia, who won the first meeting 8-3, battering Johan Emari. Emari only lasted 2.2 innings and allowed 6 runs on 6 hits with 5 walks in his last outing. Maybe pitching him just 3 days after the QBL ASG in SaxerVilla wasn't the best idea, but on full rest, it is expected that he will turn around this moribund rotation.

Stacie Cordova’s Take:

Hello, Cassadaigua, it’s Stacie Cordova and I’m today’s blogger. If you haven’t realized this yet, we’re not going to have just one set blogger for the World Baseball Classic, but we are going to rotate this around a little bit. For me, I am honored to be on the team for the second time and was very spoiled to win a championship in my first attempt. Things have come to me very quickly in my career, and that was no exception. I like to think that it a product of hard work, as ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be a pitcher. It just fascinated me to see all of the kids my age who all talked about hitting home runs almost like they were going up against Syvorji pitching on a game by game basis. They say that chicks dig the long ball, and growing up that was the talk of my hometown. I swung a bat a few times, but it didn’t excite me as much as striking out my friends on the schoolyard. From then, I knew that pitching was in my blood. Since when you are kid, they don’t want you to be messing around with curveballs (though I didn’t always listen), I made it a priority to build up my arm strength as much as possible so that I could throw hard. I was also fortunate enough to have Francesca Jimenez as one of my early coaches. She was a good pitcher in our domestic leagues before the nation began participating in the World Baseball Classic, and her time even precedes that of current coach Meghan Corrigan. Francesca taught me how to become a good pitcher by mixing up speeds, and not to worry about the breaking stuff yet. That was really a godsend, because today I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the change-up and circle change that I throw to mix in with the fastball. As I’ve got older, I’ve thrown a curve and slider even more. It is important as a pitcher to stay ahead of the hitters, because once they start to figure it out, you begin to get hit, and your success is short-lived. It’s not a coincidence that you see so many pitcher be a two-three year wonder before they burn out. Usually, it’s because they did not adapt. I wish that Francesca were still alive to see me in the Classic today, and I hope that I have made her proud by being here and representing Cassadaigua.

My first start of this Classic was against Crotunda last night, and I was pretty happy with the way I was locating my stuff. In the case of Crotunda, you have a new nation to the Classic, so they are not going to know much about you. This means that as a pitcher you can pretty much have your way as long as you remain confident but not cocky, because you haven’t seen those hitters either. They are struggling like your typical first time entrant does, but that’s not to say that will always be the case. With nations like this against us, sometimes you have the feeling that they disrespect you for your gender. While I did not think that we were disrespected in any way, I got some dirty looks back from their hitters after striking them out earlier in the game that they couldn’t believe what just happened. Perhaps they got a false sense of security after Vincent Powell doubled and then advanced to third on a throwing error by Shannon Cooley, then scored on a sac fly that they were going to have an easy day. Those would be our only real mistakes of the day, and we took the game over pretty quickly. We’re halfway through this now and there is still a sense that this Classic is one of the most wide open in decades.

"Well, we're here in Lymantatia. Seems like a nice enough place on the surface, a lot of last names take after saints--"

"How does that make it a nice place?"

"I'm just saying, I think there are several pairs of brothers, like the battery, that's kind of cute--"

"No, that's a sign of inept management if they only have one battery."

"Well, as I was saying, it seems nice on the surface."

"But what?"

"Was getting to that part. You see, recent evidence suggests that Lymantatia is a hotbed of...badminton."

"What?"

"You heard me."

"You mean, like, badminton? Racquets and shuttlecocks and things?"

"What did you just--"

"You're not one of those KVN nutjobs, are you?"

"Do I look like a nutjob?"

"I used not to think so. Now I'm not so sure..."

"...well, after that convincing victory, Zwangzug sit in first place in their group at the halfway point. Some excellent pitching from Guith-Brathan, mixed in a lot of changeups to keep Lymantatia on their toes all day, they never had more than one runner on at a time!"

"Had to pitch from the stretch a lot, though."

"True. But not so much as St. John--the pitcher, I mean, not the catcher. Smacked around all day, poor guy, he must be exhausted."

"Quite."

"A two-run homer from Sherman got things off to a strong start in the first. Things just went well from there, then by the eighth there were two walks and a hit batsman setting up a big hit from Reyemel."

"He's kind of fluky."

"He is that. Anyway, statistic of the day, on-base percentage!"

"Oh, this'll be good! One of the most useful stats."

"You want to define it for us?"

"Sure. It's the percentage of times that a batter gets on base!"

"Well, not technically. Technically it's expressed as the fraction out of a thousand, and the numbers are just read off."

"Yeah."

"So that's not a percent. A percent would be like, fifty percent."

"Well nobody's OBP is literally fifty percent, unless they're like one for two."

"Um...Sherman and Hamweigh had some very good games last tournament."

"When you say...well, I mean, the Zebras faced some pretty crummy teams."

"That is true."

"What I want to know is, OBP makes so much sense! And it's correlated to wins, more so than normal batting average! How come it didn't take off back in the day instead of batting average?"

"Well, errors were much more common back then like I said. And more a sign of fielders' ineptitude than batters doing well. So people probably didn't think that was worth the trouble of including."

"Yeah, but still, shouldn't it have been more correlated with success?"

"I don't know. When did people start keeping track of correlating things?"

"It says here something about Galtonian things..."

"Galton? The Citiz manager? He's quite recent, then!"

"Yes. I think we're done here."

Greenfield Gazette
Megan Brandon on Baseball

At the halfway mark of World Baseball Classic 20, things are looking better than we figured for the home team. True, Lycrabon pinned our ears back in game five with a 16-run outburst. But that's been our only loss so far, and we stand clear second in our group with five games left. Since only two teams advance from each group, that's where we want to be.

The starting pitching, Lycrabon notwithstanding, has been a bright spot. All four starters threw quality starts in their first outings, six or more innings yielding three or fewer runs. Designated hitter Tara Bradley has five home runs so far, and shortstop Mary Ann Sullivan has hit in every game. But Dora Johnson's shaky outing in game five is cause for concern. It remains to be seen whether the rest of the field solves our unfamiliar hurlers in the second leg of play.
