NBO SportLine (Kytlerian domestic sport news; open thread)

Postby The Kytler Peninsulae » Sun Sep 11, 2011 8:04 am

NBO SportLine is the leading source of sporting news from The Kytler Peninsulae, known for having provided the authoritative reports on Kytlerian sportspeople on the international stage. When you see a sporting report that's not otherwise attributed to another source, it's an NBO SportLine report.

Now, their international service will incorporate coverage of the domestic sporting action on Kytlerian soil.

Their first articles will explain the four major established leagues - in soccer, baseball, gridiron, and cricket - and the newly-founded AWR Kytlerian Lacrosse League.

An introduction to Kytlerian domestic soccer

Soccer - it is referred to by that name in the Kytler Peninsulae, as it is felt that no individual code ought to be referred to simply as "football" for fear of offending another - is the most popular participant and spectator sport in the country, although it is more "first amongst equals" than a national obsession.

The league structure is unusually regionalised for a small country; only one national league exists, the 16-team EastWest National Soccer League. Each team plays each other twice, as you'd expect; the bottom three are relegated.

The next level below is the Emtec League, which is split between North and South divisions. The winners of each division are promoted, as are the winners of a one-off game between the runners-up of each; all four of these teams also take SBCC places. There's a minor reorganisation of teams between North and South each year depending upon who has been promoted and relegated, to minimise travelling.

A bewildering mess of mostly amateur leagues exist below that, and their teams are only really known when they appear in the domestic knockout competition, the SO-KP Cup (named after the Soccer Organisation of the Kytler Peninsulae). The winners of this get a Globe Cup spot, assuming they don't already; if not, it goes to the next team down in the league. At present, the champions get a TQCC spot, second and third enter the Globe Cup, and the third Globe Cup spot goes to the SO-KP Cup winners if they are not in the top three in the league, or the fourth-placed team otherwise. Capitolians won last season's SO-KP Cup, so nouveau riche club Borlfield Town, who finished fourth, take the spot.

Last season, the big stories in the "NSL" (as it is almost always referred to in the media) were the collapse of defending champions Roddens City into a shock relegation battle, and the emergence of two utterly dominant clubs. Those two were FC Alaer and Bay City United, the former built on a miserly defense, the latter on by far the most potent attacking force in a league noted for defensive play. The old saying "defense wins championships" held up, as Alaer prevailed by three points, with third-placed Capitolians a further twelve back. The top two lost only five games between them, and might just be competitive in international play. Though probably not yet.

More money is flowing into the league from potential international exposure, and teams are looking for new signings from abroad. In particular, Capitolians and Borlfield Town want new attacking talent, and Roddens City need a complete overhaul; expect all three, and possibly an unnerved top two, to be involved in the international market. They won't get genuinely big names, of course - they're not established enough for that - but they could be ideal destinations for perennial reserve players at big clubs, or young players looking to gain experience.

An introduction to Kytlerian baseball

The Kytlerian Baseball League is fast becoming a national summer tradition, particularly in the big cities and the main seaside resorts. (The rural areas, and the wealthy modern exurbs, prefer cricket.)

There are three divisions of six teams, who play each other ten times in a season (one three-game and one two-game series at each home field) and out-of-division opponents four times in a season (one two-game series at each home field). The top two teams from each division go through to the playoffs, with the top two teams overall gaining byes to the Final Four round.

Last season, the standings were as follows;

Code: Select all
Northern League Standings

   Team                      P   W  L  GB
 1 Icenbrook Foxes          98  60 38  --
 2 Magstone Rattlers        98  52 46   8
 3 Roddens Tigers           98  51 47   9
 4 Edencliff Magicians      98  47 51  13
 5 Norriswood Owls          98  45 53  15
 6 Snodden Beasts           98  45 53  15

Foxes enter playoffs at the Final Four; Rattlers enter playoffs at the Super Six

Southern League Standings

   Team                      P   W  L  GB
 1 Zeiven Hawks             98  63 35  --
 2 Santa Mordana Stars      98  57 41   6
 3 Charlfield Terriers      98  46 52  17
 4 Vengife Legends          98  46 52  17
 5 Alaer Angels             98  44 54  19
 6 Hurriston Hornets        98  42 56  21

Hawks enter playoffs at the Final Four; Stars enter playoffs at the Super Six

Eastern League Standings

   Team                     P   W  L  GB
 1 Zube Nationals          98  52 46  --
 2 Bravin Warriors         98  48 50   2
 3 Clifford Milliners      98  48 50   2
 4 Aardswood A's           98  47 51   3
 5 Bay City Falcons        98  46 52   6
 6 Arjena Jesters          98  43 55   9

Nationals and Warriors enter playoffs at the Super Six

The Super Six and Final Four rounds are five-game series. The final Championship Series is a seven-game series. Teams are seeded based on overall win-loss record, with ties separated randomly. There can be no divisional matchups in the Super Six round, and seedings are changed to avoid them. In this particular season, the 52-46 Nationals and Rattlers were slated to meet each other anyway as #4 and #5 seeds, so the two were seeded randomly.

Code: Select all
Super Six
Bravin Warriors 1, Santa Mordana Stars 2 [Santa Mordana Stars leads series 1-0]
Santa Mordana Stars 3, Bravin Warriors 7 [series tied 1-1]
Bravin Warriors 8, Santa Mordana Stars 3 [Bravin Warriors leads series 2-1]
Santa Mordana Stars 1, Bravin Warriors 0 [series tied 2-2]
Bravin Warriors 6, Santa Mordana Stars 4 [Bravin Warriors wins series 3-2]

Magstone Rattlers 6, Zube Nationals 4 [Magstone Rattlers leads series 1-0]
Zube Nationals 8, Magstone Rattlers 7 [series tied 1-1]
Magstone Rattlers 1, Zube Nationals 2 [Zube Nationals leads series 2-1]
Zube Nationals 2, Magstone Rattlers 3 [series tied 2-2]
Magstone Rattlers 1, Zube Nationals 8 [Zube Nationals wins series 3-2]

Final Four
Bravin Warriors 14, Zeiven Hawks 13 (F/11) [Bravin Warriors leads series 1-0]
Zeiven Hawks 15, Bravin Warriors 2 [series tied 1-1]
Bravin Warriors 7, Zeiven Hawks 10 [Zeiven Hawks leads series 2-1]
Zeiven Hawks 8, Bravin Warriors 7 [Zeiven Hawks wins series 3-1]

Icenbrook Foxes 7, Zube Nationals 2 [Icenbrook Foxes leads series 1-0]
Zube Nationals 4, Icenbrook Foxes 5 (F/10) [Icenbrook Foxes leads series 2-0]
Icenbrook Foxes 3, Zube Nationals 4 [Icenbrook Foxes leads series 2-1]
Zube Nationals 4, Icenbrook Foxes 2 (F/13) [series tied 2-2]
Icenbrook Foxes 6, Zube Nationals 5 [Icenbrook Foxes wins series 3-2]

Championship Series
Icenbrook Foxes 6, Zeiven Hawks 5 (F/10) [Icenbrook Foxes leads series 1-0]
Zeiven Hawks 4, Icenbrook Foxes 1 [series tied 1-1]
Icenbrook Foxes 9, Zeiven Hawks 4 [Icenbrook Foxes leads series 2-1]
Zeiven Hawks 8, Icenbrook Foxes 5 (F/11) [series tied 2-2]
Icenbrook Foxes 2, Zeiven Hawks 3 [Zeiven Hawks leads series 3-2]
Zeiven Hawks 11, Icenbrook Foxes 2 (F/11) [Zeiven Hawks wins series 4-2]

So despite some upsets in the regular season - the Eastern Division was expected to be far stronger than it was, and nobody saw the Icenbrook Foxes playing this well - the team widely assumed to be the best team in Kytlerian baseball, the Zeiven Hawks, came through in the Championship Series. In a curious quirk, they were the only team who won three playoff games in a row at any point - and they did it twice.

The AWR Kytlerian Lacrosse League

The new professional league in Kytlerian sport, sponsored by the country's largest vehicle manufacturer. It was created in part to shift the balance of power in Rushmori lacrosse to the east, and spaces have explicitly been created for international players, with the ten franchises each getting two picks in an "international draft" to supplement their fourteen picks from a draft of all Kytlerian lacrosse players aged 19 or over. (The remainder of their squad, as desired, can be filled with under-19s from their local area.) The original draft saw the ten teams shuffled in a random order for their first picks, after which rounds alternated between that order and the reverse order; the international draft will have two rounds working similarly, but in the opposite direction (so the team with the first and 20th picks in the first draft, the Santa Mordana Jets, will get the 10th and 11th picks in the international draft).

International players are sought after for the AWR Kytlerian Lacrosse League!

Just post details of anyone who is willing to play pro lacrosse in The Kytler Peninsulae, as many as you like from your nation. Twenty will be chosen in the international draft. Please state name, age, position, and details of the player's history.

The franchises, with their key players so far:

Alaer Voyagers
Kit: navy blue and light grey
Key players: Cameron Higginson (DF), Mike Hartnett (AT), Andy Hamilton (GK)
International draft picks: 7 and 14
Notes: The only team to draft six midfielders in the main draft. Many believe this puts them in a better position in the international draft, as midfielders are seen as likely to be in high demand to increase substitution options. Others point out they lack a star midfielder and could have done with the space for one from elsewhere. Still, Cameron Higginson is an immense figure to build a franchise around, a star of the national team at only 22.

Bay City Pirates
Kit: black and white, with light blue trim
Key players: Caine McNally (AT), Walter Smith (GK), Philip Cottee (DF)
International draft picks: 8 and 13
Notes: One of two teams not to draft two goalkeepers in the main draft, largely because they will be able to field 17-year-old Bay City local Chris Button who is already talked of as a future national team goalkeeper. Badly lacking in midfield, but any team with McNally will score goals.

Edencliff Harmony
Kit: dark green and white, with light blue trim
Key players: Kupe Kirikiri (MF), Louis Moriarty (DF), Tee Short (AT)
International draft picks: 5 and 16
Notes: Appropriately given their name - a reflection of the small city's interest in the natural environment - the team have adopted a well-balanced draft approach, and are seen as one of the favourites. Have three aboriginal players in the team; Kirikiri, defenseman Manoa Umaga, and midfielder Kamira Neho.

Nuffield Sparks
Kit: light green with orange trim
Key players: Jose Enoy Pínola (AT), Robbie Jackson (MF), William Pelley (AT)
International draft picks: 3 and 18
Notes: Built on exuberant youthful attack - the oldest of four very good attackers, Pínola, is only 24 - backed up by an experienced midfield, the Sparks are set to be free-scoring, but concerns remain at the other end, or at least over goalkeeper Liam Callie. Still amongst the favourites, though, and that third pick in the international draft could be crucial.

Roddens Reds
Kit: red
Key players: Aaron Nairn (MF), Todd Beales (DF), Andy Shepherd (AT)
International draft picks: 6 and 15
Notes: Despite a strong goal threat - with the experienced Shepherd backed up by teenage Vephra sensation Freprisis Apyrphung and the underrated Hal Dolendum - the Reds are tipped by many to struggle, with Scott Vincent not a well-regarded goalkeeper, and a lack of top-class midfield support behind Nairn. Others point out that the supporting cast of midfielders are well-balanced, allowing for effective use of substitutions. Could finish anywhere.

Santa Mordana Jets
Kit: black with yellow trim
Key players: Sze-Ying Chan (MF), Norman Virgo (DF), Kyle Thompson (GK)
International draft picks: 10 and 11
Notes: Had the first pick of the main draft, and used it - as expected - on indefatigable midfielder Sze-Ying. Unfortunately, they only have three other midfielders, none of them of the highest calibre, and they will need at least one more, even with Sze-Ying's fitness. Their draft focus in later rounds was on defense, so expect tight encounters. Title hopes may rest on the depth of the international draft.

Sillham Storm
Kit: dark grey and dark blue
Key players: Dion Dunmore (AT), Scott Williams (DF), Barry Harley-Wood (GK)
International draft picks: 4 and 17
Notes: Badly drafted in just about every department, from the lack of a reserve goalie on down - though there is strength in attack, where Tommy Snowdon and Walter Cottee will chip in with goals alongside Dunmore if they ever get opportunities from a weak midfield. They will need to use that fourth pick in the international draft well, or they could be whipping boys.

Vengife Tribe
Kit: black and orange
Key players: Ock Fils (AT), Ciaran Mulhern (MF), Iain Paddington (MF)
International draft picks: 9 and 12
Notes: With Vengife being the capital of the aboriginal community, Ock Fils was destined to be the Tribe's franchise player, and holding the second overall pick ensured they got him. The team is built around him, with one of the best midfields in the league, but no high-class attacker besides the prodigious aboriginal-Vephra teenager. The defense lacks a big name, but they might get one with the ninth international pick. Title contenders.

Zeiven Wizards
Kit: white and sky blue with yellow trim
Key players: Whootung Whosash (GK), Kyle Stock (DF), Bo Timpson (DF)
International draft picks: 2 and 19
Notes: Someone obviously told them that defense wins championships, and the #9 spot in the main draft invited them to build from the back as only one defender went in the first eight picks. Whosash and Stock were excellent picks in the first two rounds, but the rest of the team doesn't look so stellar, particularly the threadbare midfield. Much rides on the first international pick.

Zube Leaders
Kit: gold with black trim
Key players: Marcus Hamilton (MF), Ellad Pazyheas (MF), Steve Pillman (DF)
International draft picks: 1 and 20
Notes: Opted to focus on midfield strength, and their drafting tactics - three midfielders in their first four picks - sparked havoc in the teams that picked after their double selections. They have some useful players elsewhere on the field, but the question now is stark; what to do with the #1 international pick? A star attacker looks certain, and that could make them title contenders.
Out of international isolation and... winning things? Huh?

Defenceman: Mario Plesov - 22 - Argyres X
He stands at 6'4 tall, and is a big, brawny defenceman - prepared to put his body in the way of oncoming attackers if he needs to - to stop them from scoring. He plays for Argyes X at the Cruxschtade - he's quite skilled when stick-handling too, and is an excellent passer.
He was a part of the Mytanar Squad in WLC 10, 11 and 12.

Midfielder: Maxym Okachachev - 25 - Free Agent
He won WLC 10, and was in the squad for WLC 12 after a years break from lacrosse. He got into a spat with Milo Tyrella and quit his club side, the (formerly) world-beating Alzburg Saints. He's a top class player though, he's quick and can run all day - his level of stamina is amazing. He's a top-class passer and his shooting is good too.
He was a part of the Mytanar Squad in WLC 10 and 12.

Mario Plesov and Maxym Okachachev have both won the World Lacrosse Championship once, with Okachachev also having won the MCUL once.

Attacker: Akim Gavra - 19 - Free Agent
The youngster was on the books of the Ouverjavaa Rebels, but left to pursue career interests in another nation. He hopes to attract a team in the AWR League. He's very quick, and his inter-play with his team mates is top class. He is very aware of the space he has on the field and makes good use of it.

Goalkeeper: Zlatka Zoryov - 24 - Argyres X
Fast reflexes are good when you're a goalkeeper in lacrosse. Zoryov has them and is expected to be a part of the next Mytanar World Lacrosse Championship squad. He wants a new challenge in a different nation to hopefully further his career.
The Third Republic of Mytannion

Megadian footballing authorities were disappointed to miss out on the draft. They would like to ask whether it is still possible for them to submit players.

Well, the swap deal Capitolians made with KPFA League side Urnabhi in the first ever international transfer involving a Kytlerian side had an interesting consequence. Urnabhi, leaking goals, buy in a defender in exchange for a striker, courtesy of their new defensive-minded Kytlerian manager, and end up being quite defensive overall. Capitolians, erm, improve their defense having sold a defender for a striker. Mind you, they scored more, too, but they couldn't break the new duopoly at the top of Kytlerian football, and nor could ultra-rich Borlfield Town - aalthough their Cotdelapomais wild winger Christian settled in mildly well, scoring more goals than he did loose women. Capitolians ended up with the same finish as last season - third place and the SO-KP Cup, satisfyingly denying Bay City United the distinction of "doing the double". They'd already snatched the title back from Alaer on the last day.

Meanwhile, Roddens City are back, Ranford & Willsbrook did well enough to afford a new web designer (and Tuu Dufu was superb all season, causing many to lament that he played for Seunem and not the Kytlerian national team), and the other newly-promoted clubs go straight back down, unexpected in the case of Zeiven City. Not that you should expect better when you CAN'T SLANI SCORE. Still, at least they did better than Corlsden United, who finished bottom thanks to having a "defense" not worthy of the name. They'll struggle to go back up.

Magstone are going straight back up, and sneak the first-preference SBCC slot from Nellis Port, who topped the Emtec League South with a slightly lesser record than Magstone's 61-point haul in the North. Still, the Pirates don't care, as they're playing in the top flight for the first time ever, holding off Cornham Town - temporarily at least, as they will be going up via the playoffs courtesy of a 3-0 defeat of Rehyestein. Both factory teams in the Emtec Leagues - newly-promoted AWR Truckers in the South, Woolery in the North - stayed up in nail-biting relegation battles.

In a far more attacking season than the Kytlerian norm, Capitolians took the title by a point, albeit with a game to spare. Ouagha Mebhav was the league's top scorer with 25, making a huge difference to the team's fortunes. They lost at home on the final day 2-1 to Magstone, who were four points adrift at the bottom with two games to go but miraculously stayed up on goal difference. Ranford & Willsbrook were not expected to go down, and Tuu Dufu - by far and away the standout in the side - looks certain to find employment at either a top club here or another club abroad. Extraordinarily, Bay City United were fifth, overtaken on the last day by Bravin Rangers, and to get into the Globe Cup they needed to win the SO-KP Cup final - against FC Alaer. After 120 scoreless minutes, they lost 4-3 on penalties and Bravin Rangers had gained international football for the first time in their history. The final penalty sparked wilder celebrations in Bravin than Alaer.

Baltonbrook were promoted after defeating Kyven Town in the playoff 1-0

Two runaway champions gain promotion, Rehyestein making a double SBCC appearance after being playoff losers last time, and Zeiven City rather predictably bouncing straight back up. Baltonbrook snatched the playoff place courtesy of Donningwood Rovers losing on the final day to Norgsklub, sending them down from second to fifth, and breaking a goal difference tie with Benton Town courtesy of winning 5-0 to their rivals' 1-0. It's the second time in three seasons they've won the promotion playoff.
