Now, their international service will incorporate coverage of the domestic sporting action on Kytlerian soil.
Their first articles will explain the four major established leagues - in soccer, baseball, gridiron, and cricket - and the newly-founded AWR Kytlerian Lacrosse League.
An introduction to Kytlerian domestic soccer
Soccer - it is referred to by that name in the Kytler Peninsulae, as it is felt that no individual code ought to be referred to simply as "football" for fear of offending another - is the most popular participant and spectator sport in the country, although it is more "first amongst equals" than a national obsession.
The league structure is unusually regionalised for a small country; only one national league exists, the 16-team EastWest National Soccer League. Each team plays each other twice, as you'd expect; the bottom three are relegated.
The next level below is the Emtec League, which is split between North and South divisions. The winners of each division are promoted, as are the winners of a one-off game between the runners-up of each; all four of these teams also take SBCC places. There's a minor reorganisation of teams between North and South each year depending upon who has been promoted and relegated, to minimise travelling.
A bewildering mess of mostly amateur leagues exist below that, and their teams are only really known when they appear in the domestic knockout competition, the SO-KP Cup (named after the Soccer Organisation of the Kytler Peninsulae). The winners of this get a Globe Cup spot, assuming they don't already; if not, it goes to the next team down in the league. At present, the champions get a TQCC spot, second and third enter the Globe Cup, and the third Globe Cup spot goes to the SO-KP Cup winners if they are not in the top three in the league, or the fourth-placed team otherwise. Capitolians won last season's SO-KP Cup, so nouveau riche club Borlfield Town, who finished fourth, take the spot.
Last season, the big stories in the "NSL" (as it is almost always referred to in the media) were the collapse of defending champions Roddens City into a shock relegation battle, and the emergence of two utterly dominant clubs. Those two were FC Alaer and Bay City United, the former built on a miserly defense, the latter on by far the most potent attacking force in a league noted for defensive play. The old saying "defense wins championships" held up, as Alaer prevailed by three points, with third-placed Capitolians a further twelve back. The top two lost only five games between them, and might just be competitive in international play. Though probably not yet.
More money is flowing into the league from potential international exposure, and teams are looking for new signings from abroad. In particular, Capitolians and Borlfield Town want new attacking talent, and Roddens City need a complete overhaul; expect all three, and possibly an unnerved top two, to be involved in the international market. They won't get genuinely big names, of course - they're not established enough for that - but they could be ideal destinations for perennial reserve players at big clubs, or young players looking to gain experience.
