Lake Speed "Retires"

After over a decade of racing in Whittoria's top stock car series, Lake Speed has decided to step out of the driver's seat and into a managerial role.

"We've been very competitive, particularly in the past few years," said Speed in a press conference this week. "But it's starting to wear one me, being the driver and the owner. I'm not saying I won't ever drive again, but for now for us to move on I think we need to find someone to drive the car while I handle all the owner's responsibilities. I think we'll be much better overall."

Speed never directly said i, but it is suspected that Lake Speed Racing may go after Lien Murakami for his replacement. She currently is competing in the Hodori Grand Touring Championship, but rumors have begun to spread that she may bolt for the Grand National Series. If she does, there may be a seat waiting for her.

If not, then other possibilities for his replacement are available; Stephen Dunwoody from the Regional Sportsman Series would be the most likely candidate, although if Lucas Ford can be swooned away from Ford's factory team he could be a good addition.

"Damn, that was close." Brian was looking at the results. He had somehow managed to remain in the running. He had remembered managing to take the lead for one lap before something happened. He tried to recall what happened to get him in that. It was towards the beginning of the race where it had happened. He remembered managing to take the lead, but had trouble holding that lead from fierce competition. The competition there was thick as could be shown. When an accident came up, he just didn't risk it. He didn't want to contribute to the accident, and thus had let others pass him. He just wasn't able to regain the position, and had trouble keeping up. The accidents just kept happening, and caused him to loose two laps due to overcaution. He came in the lowest passing position, but had managed to gain more score than the next two positions. When he saw his exact place he let out a chuckle at his new lucky number. He had at least put up a hell of a fight anytime he wasn't worried about causing an accident, and he thus was awarded "Diehard Race" for what he had managed to pull.

Sadly, Calvin Keller's first Grand National victory was overshadowed by season ending injuries to Lucas Ford and Ryan de Illiona, and the tragic death of Jason Smokoff, driver of the #65 Atari Chevrolet.

Lucas Ford's crash with just over 30 laps remaining was the result of contact going into turn one. He backed up into the outside retaining wall and slid back down the banking, into the middle of the racing groove. Two cars managed to avoid, but Mark Granby had virtually no where to go and plowed into the driver's side of the #5 Ford. Ford's car ended up on its roof, sliding back down the banking onto the apron, while Granby's #34 Lorenzo Panther came to rest about 100 yards down the track. Granby suffered whiplash but would be fine enough to compete next week at Charlotte. Ford, on the other hand, was lucky just to be alive. The impact from Granby's car left him with multiple broken bones, a concussion, and temporary paralysis that he is expected to recover from. However, he will not race again in 1982. The Ford Factory team will still retain him as a driver in 1983; Lars Hoeijmakers will drive the #5 car for the rest of 1982.

Ryan de Illiona was involved in a similar incident as Jason Smokoff's, at the same corner after the same restart. Going three wide into the first turn, Illiona was caught between two cars and ended up going head first into the wall at almost 150 miles per hour. Hawaii Motor Speedway does have a "padded wall" (a precursor to the SAFER barrier) that very well may have saved de Illiona's life. He was rendered unconscious on impact, required assistance to get out of the car, and will go through physical therapy. But doctors say he will make a full recovery.

Sadly, Jason Smokoff was killed by the same thing that saved de Illiona's life: Smokoff was caught between two cars going three wide into turn one. On impact the other two cars slid further down the track, but a failure in the padded wall caused Smokoff's Chevrolet to rapidly decelerate. This rapid deceleration induced injuries that could not be survived; a tarp was placed over the #65 car as Smokoff was transported to the infield care facility, then to the local hospital after the helicopter returned from transporting Lucas Ford. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Smokoff had limited experience in stock cars, being a fairly accomplished sprint car driver. He made his first start last season at Watkins Glen, and was expecting to run close to a full schedule in 1983. He was a welcome sight around the garage, his enthusiasm a strong presence and his smile contagious. Greg Schafer had spent a fair amount of time helping him learn how to drive stock cars, and the two had become fast friends: the veteran mentor and the rising talent. Smokoff caught on quick, and managed his first top 5 earlier this year at Rockingham.

Smokoff will be honored at the World 600 later this week, with a pre race ceremony and a silent running of lap 65. He was 29 years old.

Brian had been estatic about getting second place in the qualifying round. He had managed to snatch second place and did an excellent job overall. He was estatic alongside his pit crew. Brian Gilios gained notice when he was able to pull a second place finish despite never having even gotten that close ever before. He was now somebody to watch due to comming out of nowhere from before to gain second place for at least this race due to doing so well in the qualifier. He had no intent of getting anything outside of the top ten at this rate.

When the actual race began, he did tremendously well. For 127 laps, it was tense just how close this race was. Brian was not only holding his own, but he was competing on a high level. He was leading for most of the laps he was in. In this race, he was the guy that had come out of nowhere, and was stealing the show by the sheer unexpectedness of it. The only thing that was likely to stop him at this point was an accident, which was exactly what had happened. His practice was paying off, and he was getting into the swing of things. Things took a turn for the worse when his car got overturned, effectively ending the race for himself. In an attempt to avoid wrecking into a crashed vehicle. He was confused by the amount of emotions going through his head in response to the race. Ultimately, he got over the feelings of frustration, and ultimately saw this as a good day, for he just proved he had what it took to compete, even if he did not win.

WAC ROUNDUP

Geoff Arndham racks up his second career Grand National win, another 500 miler: this time at Atlanta. His first came almost two years ago at Pocono, where he edged Alex Whitt by 0.004 seconds.

Kyle Dauberman and Nelson Steidl are showing the signs of a turnaround with their victory in Andossa Se Mitrin Vega's mountain course, the first WAC race since the Formula Championship Series last raced there in 1976.

Speaking of ASMV, Nerlak Gemheart took a nasty tumble down the backstretch at the Texas World Speedway in the Gold Crown Series' latest race. The incident was quite survivable, and we expect he'll race again next week but ASMV officials have yet to comment on his condition.

Sadly, there is very terrible news to report: Darren Wolfgang, driver of the #19 AeroDyne car is listed in critical condition after being involved in a horrific wreck; after making contact going into turn 1, the #19 car flipped wildly end over end before sliding down the banking, where he was struck by Randy Lewis at over 140 mph. The hit sent Wolfgang's car flying, shredding to pieces. Lewis will race again next week, but Wolfgang's condition is dire. While we can hope for the best it is likely he will not survive his injuries.

The Milliken

The Milliken

One of the most thrilling finishes in the event's young history saw a dash to pit road for fuel; Horace Padarson, after dominating the event, pitted under caution right before the restart. With just five laps remaining there was a mad dash for the pits! Everyone made a stop as Archie Ginn spun in turn three, smoke billowing from his car! But the caution never came out---until Thomas Murray plowed into the back of Ginn, who was travelling 60 mph in the racing line going into turn one. Chaos ensued, as cars were coming off pit road and getting passed by cars who had previously pitted. But after a brief determination Aqunii Hyu'Tojerii was named the leader, and thus took the checkered flag in first. Even more so, she walked away with a cool million dollars.
