Di Bradini Cup 11 Review

A look back at the 11th Di Bradini Cup: Today Match #4 vs Uiri

3rd Minute- Daniel Souza gets a great chance for Uiri but shoots it wide. Shawn O’Connell’s defensive pressure may have had a lot to do with the errant shot.

6th Minute- Uiri continues to get the best early chances, and they get their first corner kick of the match here following a decent stop by Anthony Baldwin. It is not hit well and the Rockets have an easy clear. Brian Sweeney is the one who gets it out.

8th Minute- Ken Bedwell levels Jose Santo near the center circle. The referee calls a foul, but the Uiri sideline seemed to want more.

11th Minute- Newmanistan has the momentum now, and is getting the better opportunities. Uiri is scrambling a little bit in their own end, and the Rockets try to take advantage.

13th Minute- Ryan McAllister gets a great shot on net, but it is parried over the bar. On the corner, Andrew Carrion attempts to get the ball to McAllister, but it hits the wall in front of him for the clear.

20th Minute- Uiri has done a good job keeping Newmanistanian advances from ending up with a goal, and they are starting to regroup and find their legs again.

23th Minute- A lazy foul by Miguel Pastor allows Michael Bosler a free kick from a great spot.

GOAL- 24th Minute- The free kick is deflected off the wall, but Jarred Halsey does a great job getting to the loose ball and keeps the play alive. Newmanistan passes the ball around a bit before ends up back to Halsey who powers a shot by the keeper to give the Rockets a one-goal lead.

34th Minute- After a lot of midfield play, Newmanistan’s Michael Bosler gets a quality shot, but shoots it wide.

36th Minute- Newmanistan again on the attack, but Bosler’s pass to Ryan McAllister catches the Serrano youngster off sides.

BOOKING- 41st Minute-Uiri’s frustration for the tide of the game grows as Nicolau Vale is shown a yellow after a lazy challenge on Andy Durham.

45th Minute- The halftime whistle sounds with Newmanistan up by a goal.

52nd Minute- Newmanistan’s defensive stand is outstanding, and the game action not terribly exciting, but effective.

GOAL- 59th Minute- A breakdown in the Uiri defensive end essentially gift-wraps a goal for Michael Bosler, who swarms in on the errant pass and makes his run on goal and scores to double the Rockets lead.

60th Minute- Rockets nearly strike immediately after with a third goal, but Ryan McAllister is denied by the goal post.

SUB- 68th Minute- Nelson Yaschter makes his first substitute, bringing in Josh Dineen for Michael Bosler, a move which obviously points to the Rockets intentions on focusing on defense.

72nd Minute- Good ball movement by Uiri gives them their best chance in quite a while, but they still got to beat Anthony Baldwin, and here they cannot.

76th Minute- Uiri again gets a good chance, this by Arajou Fernandes, but Baldwin is again ready for it.

SUB- 78th Minute- Yaschter brings in fresh defensive legs, entering young Steve McKnight for Christina Schubert.

SUB- 79th Minute- Uiri makes a pair of offensive minded substitutions.

86th Minute- Uiri gets their final chance on net, but Baldwin is there again.

90th Minute (+2)- The whistle sounds, concluding a 2-0 victory for Newmanistan and improvement to 4-0-0 overall.

Most of the time, observers might think this would be old hat for the Sarzonian Under 21 national team.

After all, their first-ever participation in the Di Bradini Cup's eighth edition featured a lengthy pause between group stage matches. The Junior Stars' first appearance in a tournament since the Incorporated Football Federation's decision to dissolve the programme after World Cup 16 started with two group stage draws. Then, it was weeks before Di Bradini Cup organisers resumed.

When Sarzonia finally took to the pitch again, they did so by posting victories. They kept getting results all the way to an unlikely 2-1 victory over The Han Empire in the championship.

Chris Merrill began pacing during another training session. It had been several days since Sarzonia's last match, a 2-1 victory over Darclad that was far from the dominant display the Junior Stars showed in the first four matches of their participation in this Di Bradini Cup.

He knew his side had to work through some rust. He felt out of sorts on the pitch after being away from making the tactical decisions during a match that counted in the tables. Still, his team's performance wasn't up to the exacting standards he'd set for it. And he'd already forced them to run several drills as a punitive measure.

He blew the whistle that hung around his neck.

"All right, lads, lasses. Shower time."

As the team trudged into the training centre following another grueling training session, Merrill grabbed his mobile and rang up Di Bradini Cup organisers.

"When are we supposed to play our next fixture?"

He didn't hear anything. He tried another number. Still nothing. Finally, he called the Incorporated Football Federation.

"Brian Wilson."

Merrill stopped short. He'd expected to talk to Lindsie, Brian's secretary. However, he'd find out later that she was at lunch.

"Brian, this is Chris Merrill ---"

"I haven't heard anything from them either," Wilson said. "Seems as though things are taking much too long to run through to their conclusion again."

"Bloody wankers."

[OOC: I know Star already knows this, but these are the opinions of my characters. I understand if Star's rather busy right now. OOCly, I'd like to see this Cup run to its conclusion, but what would be extreme irritation by my characters is more of a gentle nudging by the player behind these characters.]

OOC: Oh I am so very ashamed, and have been so very busy. This went under the carpet and I've just tripped over it, hitting my head on the way down. I'd like some opinions from the participants who still remain and are interested in finishing... Before thinking about moving on, do I:

a) Put this one down to 'tournament cancelled' (more like evaporated), or
b) /finish it up nice and quick

Comments appreciated.

I expect that tournament cancelled works best after this hiatus.

You know, doing it in one sitting might actually work well. I'd be fine with it.

Perhaps the tournament got caught in the crossfire of the precursory ripples to the Aztec apocalypse through some fluid time madness, and the reality-reset cannon accidentally wiped the tournament from the collective memory of all those involved...

Oh, silly me. I'm fine with either. Finality is nice from the point of view of the Big Spreadsheet O' Dancougar Stats, although as all of the "good" players from this class have already played in World Cup 49, no biggie.

OOC: I'd rather finish it in one go to be honest.

Or you could always declare one of the teams the champion and start afresh with the 12th.

For a man who was approaching the time of a hundred a sixty years since his birth, Simeone Di Dradini looked remarkably youthful. Positively eternal, in fact, as he appeared to be the sunny side of forty. He had packed more into his lifetime - and subsequent immortality - than most other people in history. The weight of the world, in fact, the weight of the universal natures of reality itself, weighed heavy upon his mind.

The business at the end of the World Cup 49 Final was best left unsaid, memories that few shared were better to be unmentioned. The consequences for that, however, reached incalculably far and incomprehensibly wide.

"What happened to the..." he checked his notes, "Eleventh DBC?" Simeone asked, still not feeling comfortable with referring to it's full title.

"Same as all the others?" His friend, Juan Tzimisces replied, without looking up, "Someone won, they moved on to the next one."

"Well, look at this," Simeone continued, reading out his list, "Nine, Kura Pelland. Ten, Sea and Em. Eleven, Blank. Twelve had a winner like normal, which was actually quite interesting in that..."

"Eleven's blank? That shouldn't be."

"Exactly," Simeone said, "I think it might be down to..."

"Poor record keeping," Juan said flatly. "Nothing to do with interns from Tenochtitlan, either."

"So what happened?" Simeone asked.

"Just a bug. It should sort itself out presently."

As Simeone blinked, the records came into view. Everything from Matchday 6 onwards was suddenly and strangely filled in. It looked as follows:
