Here is an evaluation of the recently released Mehdonesian Roster for the 69th World Cup, our 3 football professionals at the Mehdonesian Times; Jeff Kilburne, Urs Boehler and of course, captain of the Mehdonesian female team Sushila Hilmarsson. The three of these have a collective time involved in football of over 70 years and have collectively won a grand total of one non-domestic trophy, however after a recent third-placed finish in the Jeck Empire Championship(may the legacy of the empire live on long after it's internet page is gone) the team have shown clear confidence going into the tournament. However in the Baptism of Fire leading into the tournament, they made a hasty exit having failed to win a single match.
In response to this astounding failure, the manager, Stan Jockall tried to reassure the Mehdonesian fans by saying,
"I don't want to talk about it."
Needless to say the Mehdonesian Roster has undertaken some changes since the BoF, most namely the replacement of experienced striker Wilfried Stern, instead being replaced by unknown youth Kennet Török(aged 15) who was signed by Blueville Wolves 3 years ago from the Gotta Have My Bowl Gonna Have Cereal side of Wordswick FC for a large sum of £200,000. When we asked our professionals about this replacement, they disagreed. Urs Boehler stated
"You can't simply remove a player of Stern's stature because of a few bad performances, especially at an event such as this where his experience is going to come into play so much for this team. I mean it's easy to look at the Baptism of Fire and judge him as bad because of that, but he has already shown his capabilty on various occasions."
However Sushila Hilmarsson argued,
"Problems on a team need to be solved, you can't have weak links placing a burden on the team, as well as this Mehdonesia look to the future with this choice, a 15 year old with so much potential has every right to be on that team."
There has also been more controversy over his position in the team as he wasn't born in Mehdonesia, however as Mehdonesia law states that if you are employed in Mehdonesia for 2 years then you can earn citizenship, he has recently made this change. The more traditional fans have shown outrage at this choice, in the recent census by the Mehdonesian government, over 60% called for changes in laws regarding citizenship, however these were disregarded.
There have also been 3 other changes; As Hyder Lundgren has retired from football he is replaced by 29 year old Gusztáv Lakatos, Mike Oxlong is replaced by Ferdinand Newport and finally winger Jordan Townsand departs after a recent string of "underwhelming performances".
The Roster
The Goalkeepers
GK- Boris 'the bear' Johannsen [C] 32 , No Club
In an interesting turn of events, the mayor of the Mehdonesian capital of Mehdonopolis is the captain of the team. Occupying the position of goalkeeper, he is essential to the team and is considered one of the more consistent players on the team, he should start every game in our opinion.
Ricardo Gnomes 31 ,Brunsbury Rangers
This goalkeeper has been on the scene for years now, he has played on over 8 Mehdonesian teams over the last 10 years and he has been in every national roster since 2004, the prescence of Johannsen explains his recent placement on the sub bench.
Bahd Hans-Johnsen 19 , No Club
Currently clubless, and this is easily justified by just about everyone. Considered the weakest player on the Mehdonesian almost unanimously by fans, even he himself acknowledges "if there was another keeper available i would be gone.
Gusztáv Lakatos 29, Harwick Rovers
Mediocre goalkeeper who refused to play for the national team until recently as he had a disagreement with the assistant manager as he allegedly called the crossbar 'the post' following a woodwork shot from Wilfried Stern in a training session.
The Centre Backs
Jack Dawson 22 , Brunsbury Rangers
The young centre back has been overlooked recently however our professionals still feel he will play in the tournament, he is seen as having a lot of potential and he has a lot of aerial ability as well as awareness.
Joel Cole 31 , Mehdonopolis Massers
This experienced defender has recently reached his peak following a fairly uneventful career beforehand, after amazing performances last year he was snapped up by Mehdonopolis Massers from Geraldsham town for a sum believed to be around £320,000, he looks to be a great player in this tournament, his main strong point is his positioning according to Jeff Kilburne.
Mike Wilson 22 , Blueville Wolves
One of the more controversial players on the squad, despite proving he is capable he will probably not play due to the incidents which happen when he does. Most famously the last national game he played where he kicked a football at the referee following his sending off.
Kim Yung-Chum 25 , Wordswick FC (Gotta have my bowl gonna have cereal)
Despite playing abroad, this centre back is still a fan favorite. He is less likely to start in the tournament as Jockall has shown a preference towards the other defenders.
Ivan Blue 33, Norborough Kings
This defender is the oldest player on the team and therefore he has the most experience. His strong defensive abilities are often under-rated in the opinion of our professionals as often his pace is critized, he is far past his physical peak.
The Full Backs
Giles Gillingham 29, Harwick Rovers
This left-back is considered one of the best in his position right now, despite this he has recently shown a slightly negative relationship with manager Stan Jockall and as a result he has not been played as much.
Miles Gillingham 26 , Norborough Kings
Brother of Giles Gillingham, this right back is perhaps seen as one of the weaker players on the time, despite having a lot of pace and acceleration. He is lacking in technique and ball control. He is played more often in a wing-back position.
Andy Heweer 17 , Mehdonopolis Massers
Unofficially hailed as the best Mehdonesian youngster, this left back has tons of potential and is already a regular member of the starting eleven. He is strong in all aspects and is especially famed for his long balls and crosses, as he often attacks as well as defends.
Billy Allen 18 , Oldview 'Oldies'(Gotta have my bowl gonna have cereal)
This right back has a bit of ability, but still doesn't have enough quality yet to start games, Jockall does bring him on if the win is secured but otherwise he makes a decent benchwarmer.
Skanda Salvage 23, Mehdonopolis Massers
This right back is the regular starter for Mehdonesia as together with Andy Heweer he forms the Massers full-back combo, they have great synergy but Salvage's main strength is his defence, he often plays like a third centre back, making vital tackles and interceptions consistently.
The Central Midfielders
Grigore Norling 24 , No Club
Despite his contract at Fogfield FC recently running out, he is still a reasonable player. Sometimes his passes aren' very accurate but he still makes up for that in other areas, especially his shooting from distance.
Rab Baanders 27 , Blueville Wolves
Possibly the most consistent player on the squad, a good all-rounder but he doesn't excel with any particular ability, he will normally sit on the bench
Kam Soucy 28 , Harwick Rovers
Despite being substitute for mid table team, Harwick Rovers, this player is still solid and is capable of producing wonders, he has a lot of strength and is a great holding midfielder.
Plinius 'P-diddy' Gorbould 17, Stoneacre FC
Described by Stan Jockall as "the glue of the team", this attacking midfielder is so skilled and capable. Shining through the Disappointing Baptism of fire performances, this player has shown his ability time and time again. He recently rejected a bid of around £35,000,000 to bring him away from Stonehaven, saying they were 'his team'
Mikołaj Naumov 31, Fogfield FC
A strong central midfielder, this player is more defensively orientated and he often looks a lot weaker when going forward. He is very skilled both on and off the ball.
The Wingers
Izaak Manns 26 , Norborough Kings
This pacy winger is best on a quick burst down the wing, he likes to cut in as opposed to crossing the ball. On the counter the team will be trying to get it to him.
Nikodem Zielinski 30 , Rack City (Jeckland)
This right footed winger is more based around his close ball control and crossing ability than his pace, whilst he isn't as pacy as Manns he often makes up for it with his passing play
Zlatan Nicolosi 28 , No club
Currently clubless, this left-winger has been very dissapointing recently, in the past when he reached his peak he was a truly amazing player, topping the Mehdonesian assists for two consecutive years.
Olav 24 , SRK Nilika
This left winger is a key component of the Mehdonesian attack, a guarenteed starter due to his ability to both score and create goals.
Bjarni Ozoliņš 20 , SRK Nilika
As he and Olav are teammates who play in the same position, he has adapted at his club to play just about everywhere; attacking midfielder, winger, striker and wingback. As he can play all of these to a good standard he is a very useful player, his main strength is that he can use both of his feet equally as well.
The Strikers
Adán Björnsson 30 , Harwick Rovers
A consistent striker who has a very strong aerial ability, he likes to drop back with the midfield when the team aren't attacking.
Kennet Török 15 , Blueville Wolves
A complete unknown in Mehdonesian football, according to the manager of 'the wolves' he shows a lot of potential and there's a good chance of him starting for the wolves next season.
Erasmo Argyris 19 , SRK Nilika
The normal starting striker for the side, he is pacy and powerful. However he is lacking in aerial presence as he is only 5 feet tall.
Rune Wojda 23, Wordswick FC (Gotta have my bowl gonna have cereal)
The eternal 'supersub', this young striker has failed to score in 14 starting appearances however in 4 substituted appearances he has scored 6 goals. Expect him to be brought on as a wildcard if Mehdonesia are struggling.
Here is the prediction of the formation for the Mehdonesian first game.
Manager- Stan Jockall
The eternal optimist, the eternal motivator and the eternal idiot, Jockall has consistently showed that he has no knowledge of football and it is believed that he has retained his job mainly through friendship with high Mehdonesian FA figures.
Assistant Manager- Casimiro Picasso
Believed to be the man pulling all the strings, this experienced staff member has a great relationship with the team (with one exception), he is very professional and many believe he can step up to the plate for this tournament.
The Mehdonesian team makes it's first appearance in this tournament this year as the squad was only formed 10 years ago, normally more defensive formations are employed by them. They play in purple and their main rival is Gotta my bowl gonna have cereal, who they have beaten on the last 7 meetings. When we asked our professionals for their opinion, they all agreed that Mehdonesia were unlikely to move further than the group stage. Despite this manager Stan Jockall has said "You can't write us off yet, I still have some tricks up my sleeve"(before turning around to his goalkeeping coach and saying "find some tricks or you're fired".)
