Joe Gibbs was worried, but he's always been a chronic worrier.

His Stars bounced back from the tragedy of losing their previous head coach and defensive coordinator prior to World Bowl 6, finishing 9-3 and advancing to the knockout stages.

However, the stingy Taeshan defence stalled the Stars offence. It left an empty feeling in the pits of Sarzonian stomachs after the Stars won a playoff match in World Bowl V.

Now, the road to the postseason seemed to be relatively clear, as only Arroza are ranked higher than Sarzonia in Group F. That didn't stop Gibbs from worrying.

"They're an outstanding team. Bluth Corporation are also outstanding," Gibbs said. "We're going to have to play sharp gridball to do anything against those teams, and we can't afford to take the other teams in our group lightly."

Bettia's return to the international gridball scene will take place in Group F. Gibbs said his team is well aware of Bettia's penchant for extreme offence-minded play regardless of sport.

"They focus on offence, so it will be a challenge for us to keep that team down," Gibbs said. "They also played in the AO Bowl when we hosted it. We're aware of them."

Other newcomers include Jagada and Sibirsky. Gibbs said he hasn't had the opportunity to scout either team yet.

"We're concentrating our energies on Bettia," Gibbs said. He said he didn't know when asked about a rumour that the Stars would unveil a red kit for their Matchday 6 home fixture against Bettia, considering the nation's extreme dislike of the colour red.

"That's not my decision," Gibbs said.

National Team to Take Another Crack at World Bowl

After sitting out the last World Bowl due to organizational dificulties, the Bluth Corporation National Football Team will be once again making an entry in World Bowl VII. Though the team has made the playoffs each of the three times it has entered previously, it has never advanced beyond the first round; new head coach Arthur Miller looks to break this trend. Simply making the playoffs this time won't be an easy task, however; having been placed in a group with powerhouses Arroza ( and Sarzonia, Bluth Corporation will likely find itself fighting for one of the four wild card spots in the playoffs rather than contending for one of the two automatic-entry spots from its group.

OOC: Qazox, are you going to be setting up a WikiStates entry for WBVII like you have for all previous ones? I'll do it if you don't want to, but I didn't want to steal your thunder if you were planning on doing it.

The Texan Chronicle
Team arrives in the Kjoma Isles
by Tommy Smith

Today at approximately 13:00 the Lurikastani Team's charter aeroplane landed in Kjoma Isles for their match Monday against the Kjoma Isles for their first game of World Bowl XII: Dancougar. The team held a short practice and video session followed by a Tour of the country.

So far the betting tables are in Lurikastan's favor but the advantage is next to none so it is doubtful that the match will be a blow out for either side. However what is more important is the Group, which consists of tough opponents such as Kura-Pelland and Prux, but Lurikastani Head Coach George Walker said that they are a minority, and it' is likely that we could place second. However, he expressed doubts about the team winning the group because 'the defensive line is a weakness, and running through the centre could cause a big play to occour. Weather or not our offensive prowess can make up for that is yet to be seen'. He also went on to say that either way this performance will out do our bout in WB V.\

Scoring: +2
Conversion: Logical
Stadium: Emperor Richard I Stadium (Located in the Imperial capital of Karita, it seats 150,000 people and has a retractable roof)

If my opponent RP's our game first, they may:
Choose my scorers: Preference for TGs first
Choose scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only with approval
Godmod injuries: No
Godmod "other" events: No

Team
Team Name: Karita Unifiers
Head Coach: Stefan Sorensen (Sara Berserkers)
Offensive Coordinator: Ross MacLeod (Caitlin Blackwatch) [Smoke n' Mirrors]
Defensive Coordinator: George Potter (Shelby Lions) [Nickel Roving Zone]
Special Teams Coordinator: Kusanagi Hiroto (Hinata Tsunami)

Offense
QB1: Étienne Rousseau, #10 [6'3", 240lbs]; Rousseau has the legs to move inside the pocket, conduct designed QB runs, or scramble as the situation requires. He also has a cannon for an arm and the kind of accuracy that allows him to thread a needle 60 yards downfield, but isn't good at analyzing a situation when a play is broken. In such situations he has a running back mentality and tends to trust his legs.

QB2: Accursius de Camera, #5 [6'1", 210lbs]; Slighter in build than Rousseau, de Camera is the quintessential option quarterback. While a capable enough passer in the pocket, he really shines while on the move and giving the defense as many reads as he possibly can to open up the field.

LT: Lee Rho, #77 [6'7", 315lbs]; Rho is a young veteran who has more than proven his once league-topping contract was worth it.

LG: Kevin Abbot, #76 [6'3", 310lbs]; The veteran on the offensive line, Abbot is the steadying influence and quite possibly the toughest bastard in the league.

C: Iolana Nahaolelua, #75 [6'3", 300lbs]; Leader of the line, caller of blocks, and otherwise charged with keeping his QB(s) alive. Young, but smart and able.

RG: Alastair Cullen, #79 [6'3", 305lbs]; Cullen has rapidly improved from his rookie season. While not (yes) the best guard in the IFL, he certainly is close.

RT: Jean Paul Dupuis, #78 [6'6", 325lbs]; Dupuis is easily the best right tackle in the league, having given up no more than two sacks in a season.

RB1: Richard Brown, #23 [6'0, 230lbs]; The prototypical running back for the Imperial Football League, Brown has a somewhat heavy build and good speed (4.42 forty yard dash) that makes him the mainstay back for the run-heavy Shelby Lions. In the national team, he is the primary running option in spread sets that include a running back and the go-to runner in the heavy run formations.

RB2: Andries Haswell, #32 [6'4", 265lbs]; While the primary runner for his professional team, Haswell will serve as the battering ram of heavy sets and the go-to man in red zone spread sets and in ball control situations. While not an excellent receiver in any situation, the man is a nigh-on unstoppable beast when handed the rock.

RB3: Tanaka Akihiro, #22 [5'8", 185lbs]; Tanaka is the primary running back and returner for the pass-happy Hinata Tsunami. His small size is a detriment in a lot of situations, but his blazing speed [4.2 flat forty] means that given any space he is all but guaranteed to break a huge run. In kicking situations he is an absolutely lethal threat that has been known to be the sole reason for special teams coordinators losing their jobs (and winning the Tsunami games). Unfortunately, his small size means he is easily shaken by hard-hitting safeties and is a bit more injury prone than usual in between the tackles where dog piles are common.

WR1: Bran Cyncad, #81 [6'1", 220lbs]; The best receiver in the IFL bar none, his blend of size and speed makes him a hard match up against most corners. His almost infallible hands and willingness to go for any catch inspires awe and questions about his sanity (although never his heart).

WR2: Adharma Chamarajanagar, #80 [6'3", 215lbs]; Cocky to a fault, often with reason, Chamarajanagar is a slightly lighter and faster version of Cyncad. Often cited as a destroyer of team chemistry, he has nevertheless helped every team he has been on win an Empress' Cup

WR3: Theodore Koch, #19 [6'0", 185lbs]; Koch is blazing fast, although not quite to the level of obscenity that is Tanaka, and has excellent hands. On the other hand, he is well aware of his slight build (for a receiver) and at times seems hesitant to go for catches that he knows will put him in a position to receive a huge hit from a head-hunting safety.

WR4: Fredrick Aho, #84 [5'11", 210lbs]; Quick (although not fast in the straight line sense) and known for making stupidly acrobatic catches that other receivers would never think about, much less try, Aho is the perfect possession receiver. Because of his leaping ability and frame, he is hard for corners and even safeties to dominate without a double team and iron clad positional advantage. However, so long as the backer responsible for him is wary, he is not a home run threat deep downfield (just don't let him juke you out of your shoes, he's made a career out of YAC.)

WR5: Axel Oxenstierna, #88 [6'5", 245lbs]; A huge target, Axel is the only receiver who is a bigger threat than Fredrick in red zone passing situations. Neither fast nor particularly shifty, Axel's advantage is in his ability to gain position and post up for a lofted pass.

TE1: Arnheim Baum, #89 [6'4", 260lbs]; Baum is a pass-catching TE without peer, quite possibly the best to ever play the game. He holds every record for a TE in the IFL and registers on several all-time receiver lists. Not a great blocker, but also not for a lack of effort.

TE2: Jencin Rasmussen, #87 [6'4", 255lbs]; A better overall blocker than Baum, he lacks the stats of his senior because his native offense runs fairly often for an IFL team.

Defense
NT: 'Ele Kai, #92 [6'4", 355lbs]; A truly massive presence in the interior that more often than not takes at least two offensive linemen to block him, Kai is the kind of defensive tackle that every team fears because he makes those around him a far greater threat to the QB.

DT1: Klahan Suriyawong, #91 [6'6", 320lbs]; Probably the best 2-4-5 DT to play in a long while, Suriyawong often teams up with his partner-in-crime Lutsenko to take out opposing QBs.

DT2: Fedir Lutsenko, #90 [6'3", 310lbs]; Better at holding against the run than Suriyawong, Lutsenko is nevertheless a potent pass-rusher.

DE1: Fridgeir Pétursson, #97 [6'4", 290lbs]; Often used to set the edge against outside runs in his native D, Pétursson is athletic enough to get after the quarterback or even drop into short zone coverage.

DE2: Acyuta Patil, #98 [6'6", 290lbs]; Patril is the standard against which all 3-3-5 DEs are measured, at least when talking about pass rushing. Not as capable of penetrating against runs to the five or seven gaps as his teammate Pétursson.

ILB1: Andreu Vega, #50 [6'2", 245lbs]; Vega is the quintessential 2-4-5 ILB; smart, disciplined, and possesing a high motor. He is a passed master at chasing down outside runs and plugging gaps inside, but is not noted as an excellent pass-rusher.

ILB2: Ashraf Shafik, #51 [6'2", 250lbs]; Vega's young protege, Shafik is a lot of what Vega is not; wild, often overpursuing on the chase, but he does possess his master's drive.

OLB1: Ailín Rowena, #54 [6'3", 240lbs]; Rowena is a loud, passionate leader who gives a spark to his defense at the most important points in a game. Unfortunately Rowena is also prone to ebbs and flows in his game; one game he'll have six sacks and the next he'll be lucky to get a pressure.

OLB2: Ian McGonagall, #55 [6'4", 250lbs]; McGonagall is quiet while Rowena is vocal, smolders while the other blazes, is steady where the other dips and rises. However, in one important thing they are always similar; their sack totals are comfortably in the double digits season to season.

CB1: Kohei Satomi, #20 [6'2", 210lbs]; Kohei is a fast and aggressive corner with a sort of sixth sense that always lets him know where the ball is, with many of his picks coming in situations where other corners would give up touchdowns.

CB2: Ayumu Kohara, #21 [6'1", 215lbs]; Ayumu is not as fast or aggressive as his teammate Kohei, which often leads him to playing off his receiver a bit, but he has a knack for getting into the opposing QB's reads and setting bait for an ill-advised throw.

FS: Lì Zhao, #23 [6'0", 205lbs]; Leader of the "Shinobi Five", the group of five DBs tapped from the Hinata Tsunami to start for the national team, Zhao is a ball hawk par excellence and is also adept at calling assignments for one of the few roving zone defenses in the league.

SS: Hwang Dae, #24 [5'11", 205lbs]; A massively hard hitter, he has a reputation for delivering knockout blows to receivers attempting catches over the middle (to the point that there are rumors of unofficial stat keeping for the purposes of a betting pool).

RS: Muaz Saleh, #25 [6"0", 200lbs]; Saleh occupies a position unique to IFL nickels; that of Roving Safety. Part linebacker, part safety, part corner; rovers are one-man fire brigades who can do anything and Saleh is the best in the IFL at it.

Special Teams
K: Daniel Carpenter, #1 [6'2", 220lbs]; A rookie with a huge leg who became used to kicking in inclement weather during college, Carpenter has the accuracy to hit anything inside 50 yards and has the record to (maybe) hit up to 70 yards.

P: Gaius Vorenus, #2 [6'5", 235lbs]; Another big-leg kicker with the ability to regularly punt 45+ yards downfield. Unfortunately what he has in leg he loses in consistent accuracy in short-yardage punts.

KR1: Kohei Satomi, #20 [6'2", 210lbs]; Excellent straight-line speed and a go-for-the-throat attitude makes Kohei an extremely dangerous returner.

KR2: Theodore Koch, #19 [6'0", 185lbs]; Blazing speed and good field awareness give Koch the ability to take any return to the house if given a few good blocks and a clear lane.

PR: Tanaka Akihiro, #22 [5'8", 185lbs]; Tanaka is easily the fastest player on the team and he is also probably the quickest, which combined with his small size gives him the ability to pick his way in and out of coverage with extreme rapidity. Don't press him early on and come at him as a unit or expect a TD.

The PIRATES are back in the World Bowl, and the group they were drawn in, seems to be an tough one to advance in.

First off a trip to Kura-Pelland, followed by the home opener against the Kjoma Isles.
Then a road trip to Holy Marsh and Lurikastan.
Then home battles against Fujisawan Territories and Kura-Pelland.
A trip to the Kjoma isles breaks up what is 4 of 5 at home, with the latter two being Holy Marsh and Lurikastan.
And finally a trip to Fujisawan Territories, which could decide the final playoff spot.

The Flexbone offense the Pirates will use is difficult to defend if you are not used to it, but the team will rely more on the defense this time around. A record of 6-4 seems about right, and depending on pts differential, it could be good enough to qualify for the trip to Dancougar.

The Enlightener: goes great with mashed potatoes

Bettia Back from the Wilderness

After twelve years of self-imposed quarantine due to the outbreak of Arora Flu, Bettia's sports-starved fans finally have some international action to look forward to. The Aroras' WorldBowl campaign kicks off this evening with a rather mouthwatering prospect - a local-ish derby at home to fellow AO stalwarts Sarzonia. While this may appear to be a mismatch on paper, the Aroras' captain Simon Brockworth was in bullish mood when he spoke to the Enlightener.

"Oh yes, I'm in bullish mood. It's a well-known fact that when it comes to any sport, Bettians don't do defence. Make no mistake, the Sarz areone of the best teams in the world while we're a little bit rusty, shall we say? We all know that and we respect our opponents, but we sure as hell won't be turning up at Tiddles Park just to make up the numbers. It'll be offense all the way, even when we're on defence - we'll be looking for any gap in the O-line and we'll be hitting it hard."

When asked what he thought of Northern Bettia's late decision not to participate in this team, he replied "From what I hear, the official line is that they feel victimised by the match officials and they aren't allowed to play according to their own philosophy. Roughly translated, they can't get away with cheating cos there are too many refs on the field!"

There's no doubt that Bettia are focused on making an impression on their return to world sport, but the rumours that Sarzonia could be using a red kit for the return leg on matchday 6 have got the CGB slightly worried, given the average Bettian's much-documented phobia of that most evil of colours. AzurLens, the manufacturer of the blue-tinted sunglasses often-used by the national soccer team, have been employed to make custom-made blue visors for the team's helmets, just in case they or any other team feel the need to dress themselves in such a fashion.

Update: What's Happened in/to Arrozan Football in the last two years?

Well the biggest story in Football has to be the stunning arrest and corruption trial of Andreas Tahlequah, after the team's third place finish in World Bowl VI. As we all remember, Tahlequah was found out to have attempted to shave points in the Tar Hornets game against the Auric Wolves of Vephrall in the final qualifying game. When arrested and placed on trial he came clean about everything, including some of the most shocking revelations to hit Arrozan Sports in it's decade of existence.

Trial Excerpt:

“Did I cheat on that last, game? Heck yeah, and I would do it again. It damn sure wasn't about letting Vephrall through. Atlantian Oceania or not, those guys probably have no business in the playoffs if they can't win. But the only thing I wanted to see in the playoff less than them were those damn glorified cheerleaders from Cassadaigua. It's one thing for a woman to play soccer, but football? You can call me a chauvinist pig all you want, but I think that we shouldn't be letting women get hit by someone like Cannon [Fremont Cannon, Admiral MLB]. You're talking about people who are 150, 170 max, trying to play runningback, TE, and wideout getting smashed by guys who are 230, 250 and running sub 4.5 40's. It hurts my soul to see a delicate woman get hit like that.

“I'm sure there are a lot of undelicate women out there. What about Rebecca Looper for example?”

“That's what you get when you let women try to get onto the gridiron field with men. She got out there and couldn't compete with sheer physical speed and strength and she lost her damn mind. Look who they have playing on the lines and at fullback now.”
{/excerpt}

Of course if blatant sexism wasn't enough excitement, there was also the acknowledgment of the manager using a private company to play demoralizing and sometimes, almost harmful tricks on the opposing teams, including the plastering of the Vephrali locker room with 51-3 posters before a playoff match, and the rewiring of the Rymerian team's hotel PA system to play nothing but Miranda Lambert and Kelly Pickler songs during the night before the team's game at Fletcher Field. This led to a separate investigation of the private firm with no results.

The result of the trial was to sentence Tahlequah to no less than 5 years at the Angola State Penitentiary in Calcasieu province. At the time of printing, he is said to be doing well coaching the prison's fledgling gridiron team.

Quick Shot: Domestic Update and Internacional Arroza

With all that craziness, it was hard to believe that there was also a domestic football league going on at the same time. The AFL's season 13 took to the field in the season directly following the World Bowl as 20 teams vied for fame and glory, or at least not to come in last and get demoted. Here's your super quick review:

North Island:
Playoffs Seeds: Saint Simona Reavers [13-5], Black Tide F.C. [12-6]
Demoted: Evangeline Seraphs [6-12]

South Island:
Playoffs Seeds: Pine Forest United [13-5], Huracan Tropicals [12-6]
Demoted: Farragut Torpedoes [7-11]

Grand Final: Huracan Tropicals 17 – Black Tide F.C. 3

More news on this in the proper place.

After the season, Tropicals coach Darius Miller was appointed to be the head man for the Arrozan National Team, surely a honor he will take with responsibility. More shocking than who went down was who came up. The Atalanta Senators were joined by Internacional Arroza, an Atalanta-based club playing at IslandAire Field, won the second division promotion spot and the playoff seed by completely breaking with the standard of only using players from the home islands. When asked about the team's break with tradition, manager Peter Kassam said:

“It's not about tradition, it's about putting the best possible product on the field. A lot of people paid a lot of money to build this stadium, to go to these games, and to put these games on TV, and we think that we should endeavor to put out the best possible product. World class chefs don't worry about whether all their spices and equipment are domestic, why should we? We're going to be scouting the World Bowl hard, shopping for the proper ingredients, so to speak.”

And lastly, the Province of Huracan has finally allowed full legailzation of sports gaming, so we are now proud to present to you the first Casino Royale World Bowl Odds. Brackets indicate the team's global ranking.

OFFICIAL NEWMANISTAN WORLD BOWL VII ROSTER

The coaching change, bringing in Jeremy Thompson has really paid off, as in two World Bowls he has led the team to two seconds and third place finish. Kenny O’Hara, at QB, deserves credit for that too, as does everyone else, of course, but the QB is always in the limelight.

Modifier: +2
Conversions: Logical
Stadium: Each game will be at a different stadium, which will be posted in my first official RP.

If my opponent RP's our game first, they may:
Choose my scorers: Yes, however at QB, only O’Hara plays without my permission.
Choose scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only say they are hurt.
Godmod injuries: No
Godmod "other" events: TG your idea for approval first.

COACHING STAFF:

Head Coach: Jeremy Thompson, South Tier
Offensive Coordinator: Kevin Baldwin, Dover City
Defensive Coordinator: Jim Connelly, Putnam Lake
ST Coach: Larry Sylvis, Hampton

(starters bolded)

OFFENSE:

QB: #14 Kenny O’Hara (31, South Tier Seagulls): O’Hara’s career has taken off, and after first being named as Pivonka’s backup in World Bowl 3, the scrambler got the nod to start in World Bowl 4, and he has done nothing but confirm that the right move was made. Some are concerned that this may be his last World Bowl as a starter since he may start losing his mobility, which is a big part of his game.

QB: #4 Michael Chatman (30, Putnam Lake Eagles): A young QB who made his debut in World Bowl 4 as the third stringer. He still has seen only very limited action. He is a pocket passer with moderate mobility.

QB: #13 Matthew McKnight (25, Hampton Bulldogs)- McKnight had a stellar collegiate career before being drafted by the Bulldogs and he looked good as rookie. He was so impressive in his first year that Thompson wanted to give him a taste of the national team. Listed at the third stringer again, don’t be surprised to see him get a look if a situation presents itself.

HB: #39 Darian Westcott (28, Fairfield City Admirals): Westcott debuted with the team as the third stringer in World Bowl IV, and remained there in World Bowl V, and served as the #2 back last time out and got about 33% of the carries. With Parisi retired from international play, Darian gets a chance to be the featured back.

HB: #35 Kevin Bowen (23, Dover City Mountaineers): Making his second appearance in the World Bowl, moving up a spot on the depth chart. Bowen is coming off a successful collegiate career and has made positive impressions with Dover City. He may be the future at this position. He has a similar style to Parisi, but doesn’t quite do it as well. Yet.

HB: #32 Shawn Kinsella (20, Pocono City Capitals): Kinsella makes his World Bowl debut in Dancougar. His explosive speed and able to catch balls out of the backfield makes most agree that he has a very bright future.

FB: #45 Shayne Maddox (30, Pocono City Capitals): Maddox debuted in World Bowl 5 as the starter and did a good job. He understands his role as a blocker.

FB: #47 Mark Donalds (25, Southport Tigers): Simply a younger version of Maddox.

TE: #89 Shane Seymour (31, Centralia Cougars): A receiving TE, Shane gets his second chance to be the starting TE, the first being in World Bowl III. He’s been a backup since then, but still gets plenty of playing time.

TE: #80 Jeremy Greene (24, Daytopia Racers): Makes his first World Bowl appearance here in Dancougar. Known for his blocking.

WR: #86 Matt Bywater (28, South Tier Seagulls): Bywater made his debut as a 4th receiver in World Bowl IV, and moved up the charts rapidly for World Bowl V, and now is the top receiver for the second World Bowl in a row. With a younger receiving corps this year, Bywater will have the highest expectations on him that he has ever seen.

WR: #81 Corey Brooks (33, Loudon Leopards): Brooks has been a kick return specialist for the team, but with him having the biggest responsibility to catch passes that he has ever seen in the World Bowl, he will not be returning any this time around, barring unforseen circumstances.

WR: #82 Kevin Penforth (26, Centralia Cougars): Making his third World Bowl, Penforth is your typical possession receiver. Not flashy, but he doesn’t drop the ball.

WR: #87 Michael Reagan (22, Thumbria Bay Sharks): One of three first time receivers on the team. Michael doesn’t have great speed, but has some pretty nice moves to get away from coverage. Considered a player to watch in the Empire.

WR: #85 Anquan Morris (21, Olympia Gladiators): The tallest receiver on the team, has good speed and will be a great receiver if he is able to remedy his too-common dropping the ball while he is wide open.

WR: #83 Chris McBride (20, Dover City Mountaineers): Stunning speed and considered a class act off the field. McBride will be our main man to return punts and kicks this year. In the future, do not be surprised to see him begin to get an even larger role.

LT: #62 Matt Campbell (28, Pocono City Capitals): Had been a backup to the great Benny Halvorsen at this position in World Bowls 3 and 4, and filled his shoes very impressively.

LG: #55 Sal Morris (29, Fairfield City Admirals): Sound in all aspects, best as a pass blocker. Second time starter. Not related to Anquan Morris, though if you could see pictures of them, that would have been pretty darn obvious.

C: #69 Scott Burnett (27, South Tier Seagulls): Debuted in World Bowl IV mainly because O’Hara is comfortable with him. It worked out has worked out very well, so no reason to change this up.

RG: #66 Kyle Williams (24, Putnam Lake Eagles): Starts for the first time after making his debut in Secristan for World Bowl 6. He’s not the strongest guard in the world, but his technique is very impressive.

RT: #77 Darrell Barkley (25, Springfield Thoroughbreds): Did very well in his first World Bowl appearance which also saw him start in this very spot. Like Williams, he has good technique, and doesn’t usually get penalized much. Holds in a way that’s difficult for a ref to notice.

C: #64 John Guerin (29, Pocono City Capitals): John has been a steady player and has been a regular backup for the team. His 6'5" 333 frame is all muscle.

G: #59 Darius Watson (23, Springfield Thoroughbreds): Named to his first World Bowl team. Weighs in at 6'4" 329.

G: #63 Billy Krause (20, North Charlotte Wildcats): Also on his first World Bowl team and a player for the future. Can play center as well.

T: #67 Victor Sheehan (28, Daytopia Racers): Makes his second appearance. Solid blocker.

T: #60 Steve Bennett (24, Olympia Gladiators): A very promising young tackle, and also got a look in World Bowl V. Being prone to false starts though is what put Barkley ahead of him.

Utility OL: #61 Mitch Philcox (29, Seminole Bay Gators): Despite age, this is his first time making the national team. Best at center, he has experience playing all positions on the line.

THE DEFENSE: (base 4-3)

DT: #97 Brodie Colliton (27, Centralia Cougars): Brodie is in his fourth World Bowl but will be starting, officially, for the third time. Average strength but impressive mobility for a big man.

DT: #73- Martin Calisdrum (27, Dover City Moutaineers): An above average run stopper. He starts for the second time after debuting as a backup in World Bowl 5.

LE: #96 Larry Washington (30, Hastings Crusaders): A big man with a nasty streak. Lacks agility, but can make up for it simply by overpowering his blocker. He is a first time starter.

RE: #91 Spencer Harrison (24, Putnam Lake Eagles): Makes his team World Bowl team, and the team will be hoping that he can become a long time fixture here, and can learn more the veteran Booker.

ILB: # 90 Shane McMurtry (26, Daytopia Racers): McMurtry a former first overall draft pick has continued to show considerable improvement. Starts for the third time.

MLB: #74 Rodney Sillinger (26, South Tier Seagulls): Debuted in World Bowl 5 as a sub and will start for the first time in World Bowl 7. It’s his ability to read the quarterback’s eyes that makes him so good.

OLB: #53 Jesse Savage (30, Dover City Moutaineers): Savage knows he has a cool last name for a linebacker, and does his best to live up to it. Getting better with age, this shows as he started since World Bowl 3. Does a great job in run/pass recognition and is never out of position.

DL: #94 Brock Kahnberg (32, Fairfield City Admirals): Consistent run stopper. Generally gets good penetration off the ball. Not flashy. Probably his last World Bowl.

DL: #92 Chris Petracelli (22, Pocono City Capitals): Makes his World Bowl debut. Good agility and could see more playing time then he anticipates.

DL: #98 Scott Winchell (23, Putnam Lake Eagles): A Defensive End by trade, he gets an outstanding pass rush. As he gets older and works on his inconsistency, he may start. Also sometimes gets too emotional, 15 yards at a time.

DL: #95 Dave Carlito (24, Centralia Cougar): Another player we’re grooming for future use. Also in his second World Bowl.

LB: #52 Jaquan Hatcher (34, Tundra Falls Mariners): Will see time when the Rockets mix it up with 3-4 base as opposed to the 4-3. His best asset is his quickness. Prone to “illegal contact” penalties with receivers when in coverage.

LB: #72 Victor Basinger (22, South Charlotte Condors): Makes his World Bowl debut.

LB: #76 Shawn Helton (23, Olympia Gladiators): Making his 2nd World Bowl. The kid’s got quite a bit of promise, especially in pass coverage.

LB: #99 Robert Cooper (23, Brighton Bulls): Yet another kid we’re needing to groom on this side of the ball. He’s also best in pass coverage.

CB: #36 Dan Strasser (36, Portsmouth Whalers): Decent speed to stay with most receivers, but won’t blow you away. Good height but won’t outleap all receivers. He makes up for all this with his intelligence, and intimidating hitting. The only member of the team that will start in all seven World Bowls.

CB: #46 Stanley Bressler (29, Dover City Mountaineers): The young kid has rapidly ascended in Newmanistanian football, and had a great World Bowl III & IV himself, compliments Strasser very well.

FS: #26 Michael Ahearn (32, Pocono City Capitals) Very popular with female groupies, Ahearn’s physical nature makes him popular to true fans as well. And not as much to receivers.

SS: #41 Joshua Hedman (23, Putnam Lake Eagles): Much like Ahearn. Wasn’t expected to bypass Asbury and Sedlacek so soon, but has been very impressive back home.

DB: #43 Chris Johnson (30, Loudon Leopards): Has blazing speed, but sometimes that works against him as he can tend to overpursue, and get beat on cutback routes. Still learning. Will be alongside McBride on kickoff returns.

DB: #22 Alex Sedlacek (28, Hampton Bulldogs): After a couple of injury shortened campaigns, the young DB has finally remained healthy and has thus been able to show what he is truly capable of. This is his second time on the national team.

DB: #44 Mark Asbury (27, South Tier Seagulls): Making his third appearance on the national team, Asbury is a hard-hitting safety. Might not be used too much, but when he is, receivers will need to know where he is.

DB: #37 Jeff Martin (20, Springfield Thoroughbreds): Possibly, the protégé for Dan Stasser.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

K: #2- Patrick Marshall (28, Fairfield City Admirals)- Marshall makes his second World Bowl appearance. Highly accurate with a career long of 60 yards.

P: #9- Todd Lincoln (30, Dover City Mountaineers): Backup punter in World Bowl 6, now that Steve Meadows finally retired at age 47.

K: #5- Dennis Gardner (28, Olympia Gladiators): A backup kicker. What more must be said? Ok, well his career long is 58 yards. Happy now?

P: #6- Bob Wesloski (22, Southport Tigers): A backup punter. That should cover it.

Vephrall - World Bowl 7

(Short version: it's the same roster as last time, but everyone's two years older. This is what happens when you wait until the last minute.)

Coaching staff

Head coach: Sperobis Ceedast, 49. Pagliloe Cothasat, 37. Ceedast resigned from the post after the matchday 4 loss to Palmouth.
Defensive coordinator: Pagliloe Cothasat, 37. Ceedast was defensive coordinator under Ceedast, and he will maintain those duties as he ascends to the head coaching role.
Offensive coordinator (interim): Crublig Claspung, 34. Yep, the quarterback is also the interim OC. We'll see how that works out.

Play style

Offensive scheme: Ceedast will continue working with his tried-and-true option-based attack that paid dividends the first two times around. For World Bowl 5, he decided to expand his options in the passing game a bit, but word is that he's returning to his roots for this campaign. Expect him to run the ball, run the ball again, and keep running it some more until the defense proves it can stop the attack.
Defensive scheme: Cothasat's defense really doesn't look that much different from what we've seen in the past. Pretty much your garden-variety 4-3, usually going to the nickel in 3rd and long situations or when facing four wideouts. Against five receivers he'll trade a lineman for another corner in a 3-2-6 setup. He also likes to blitz a lot, but tends to shy away from riskier options such as the safety blitz.
Other notes: Ceedast tends to play it by the book for two-point conversions. It is also extremely rare for his offense to punt on 4th and 3 or less, unless backed up inside their own 30-yard line.

(Style modifier: +1.5; go for two when it matters.)

Home stadium

Ellime e Vephrall, located in the national capital of Meice, Bektys state. The stadium, also home to the Meice Kings of the new National Gridball League as well as Vephrall's national association football team, features a natural grass field and a seating capacity of 80,426.

THE ROCKET REPORT

NOT A DIFFICULT ROAD TO DANCOUGAR

Pocono City- The Rockets are set to begin their World Bowl 7 qualifying effort, looking to take the one step that they have yet been able to make. After underachieving in their first three World Bowls, Newmanistan has finished no worse then 3rd overall, including two losses in the World Bowl itself, both to Dancougar. Jeremy Thompson, head coach of the South Tier Seagulls, leads the way again, and it’s safe to say the coaching change the team made after World Bowl 3 has paid off.

Two years ago for World Bowl 6, there were a lot of new faces on the roster, especially the defensive side of the ball, and Newmanistan found themselves involved in many high scoring games. Many of them return now, but two years wiser, and presumably better, then they were before. They did come up with some big games last time, and we look for them to be able to do that again. This time, the most significant chances to the starting lineup are on the offense with Corey Parisi, arguably the running back ever to play in the World Bowl no longer on the team. Although he still gets carries as a second stringer for the Loudon Leopards, at 34, Corey is not the back he once was, and was never expected to be on this team in the first place. Coach Thompson was right on top of this two years ago in his grooming of young Darian Westcott. Even though Westcott is more of a power back, he and Parisi split the carries nearly to a 50-50 level in World Bowl 6, and now Westcott gets his chance to shine. Look for the new second stringer, Kevin Bowen, to also get many carries, particularly as a third-down back. Bowen is more of a Parisi clone then Westcott is, and Thompson knows this. There are also several changes at wide receiver with Christian Gagnon no longer on the team as like Parisi, he is no longer a spring chicken. Matt Bywater will assume the #1 duties for the second time, and the explosive Corey Brooks will start as the #2 receiver. Brooks is a long time veteran of this team, but up until World Bowl 5 was really only used as a kick returner. Now, he will be used as a receiver, and it will be Dover City’s Chris McBride returning the kicks. McBride is one of three receivers making their first World Bowl appearance. Shane Seymour will now start at tight end replacing Jim “Don’t call me Sidney” Crosby, a player who was a fan favorite of Dancougar fans for some reason. He has been on the World Bowl rosters regularly since the second version. The offensive line is steady, with the only first time starter being right guard Kyle Williams, although he has previously served as a backup. The rest of the unit has experience at this level. The line should be a major strength of the team since it has been retooled over the last few World Bowls, and now the current players are really in their prime as we speak. This will be of huge benefit for the power running back Darian Westcott.

In World Bowl 7, there are 36 nations attempting to experience championship glory. It is the highest number we have ever seen for this competition, and that is really a great thing. Of those 36, there is a large amount of first-time participants, as they make up over half the field. We also see the return of Bettia and Holy Marsh and long hiatuses, and the Scandavian States after a one-World Bowl layoff. There will be six groups of six with everyone playing their group mates once at home and once on the road. The top two teams in each group will advance to Dancougar, along with four wild cards. Newmanistan will be facing, in order:

Palmouth- A first time nation that has reportedly annoyed many experienced nations already. Their press was a disaster in the Rugby League World Cup. Some people think they could have potential, but that remains to be seen. Without question, this should be two victories for the Rockets.

Vephrall- The group will not be a complete walkover. Vephrall is a good team that looks to be in that funk that we were in during the first three World Bowls. Consistently good enough to make the playoffs, but never doing much while there. It’s a proud nation which will be our biggest threat to the group title. The group should be a two team race between us. Probably a split.

Barbana- We met the Barbarians in the Oxen Cup, and cruised to two victories. Expect more of the same here. Home game:

Norwellia- The Rainbow Warriors showed some potential in World Bowl 6, but could not sustain it for the entire group stage run in what was their first appearance. Could be a nuisance to us and Vephrall, but we expect the Rockets to come away with a pair of victories. History shows that we blow one to a much lower ranked team all the time, so if so, this is probably it.

Scandavian States- They’d love to see every game end in a 49-42 shootout, and have quite a bit of potential. Look for them to be the third place team, but we should be well clear of them for the group title.

Official Schedule:
MD1: vs Palmouth @ Olympia Field
MD2: at Vephrall
MD3: vs Barbana @ Samseong Stadium at Putnam Lake
MD4: at Norwellia
MD5: vs Scandavian States @ Pocono Stadium
MD6: at Palmouth
MD7: vs Vephrall @ Tundra Falls Proving Grounds
MD8: at Barbana
MD9: vs Norwellia @ Loudon Stadium
MD10: at Scandavian States

Countdown
June 21st, 2009
---Vienna---
By Franz Dreyse

The feeling outside Barrons' Stadium is building to a fever pitch in anticipation of the Barrons' World Bowl debut against the Babbage Islands team at 8:00pm tomorrow local time.

It is anticipated that tailgating and traditional pre-game festivities will take place, with tailgating, partying, ticket scalping, and the whole lot taking place in epic amounts. Tickets are sold out for the game which will be, for better or for worse, a memorable one.

The team came off the field yesterday after a scrimmage against the Crusaders feeling confident that they could pull-off a win, in spite of the fact that many are writing them off as inexperienced newcomers. Reportedly, a pool in a foreign newspaper had the Barrons with 1:800 odds of winning the tournament. The underdog mentality is nothing new to these boys, though, as they were considered the underdogs in this year's national championship, only to emerge at the top. If anything, this has had the effect of firing up the team.

"Oh, its on," Right Guard Willy Stauffen (#66, Barrons) said after hearing about the pool. "They're not gonna know what hit 'em. Its for the better, see? They won't see us coming, and then, wham!" he said, giving us a physical demonstration with his fist to his opposite hand.

Right End Danny Rickenbacher (#62, Barrons) reportedly stated: "I don't give a [expletive] if a bunch o' foreigners think we can't win. That's why they're foreigners. They're wrong. Obviously," he said, chuckling and smiling. "It don't matter what some foreign paper says about us. We know we're here to win, and [expletive] we're gonna win it."

Everyone here in Vienna is hoping that he is right.

Local predictions are calling for a close game between our own Barrons and the Babbage Islands, and its unclear to most as to which way it will go. Just one more reason to watch tomorrow, then!

OOC: Arroza, the Rymerians actually like Miranda Lambert. It's Kellie Pickler they have a problem with. ;)

IC: LoQuan Willard hated being on the sidelines, but after a brutal three days of training camp, he had no choice.

Joe Gibbs's penchant for short, crisp practices only told some of the story. The team did a lot of hitting in those practices, and Gibbs decided to have the Sarzonian national team play games against Woodstock and Portland at the Iron Bowl as preparation for their opening match against Bettia.

The team won the game against Portland by 20, then needed a 47-yard Adam Novak field goal to defeat Woodstock in the final seconds. Now, the team was finishing its final training session before boarding the flight to Bettia.

"How are you holding up?" trainer Bubba Tyer asked.

"Still a bit sore," Willard said. He knew Gibbs would hold him out of the final training session. He also knew he'd probably get 30 carries if the Stars didn't trail big out of the gate. But he also knew he wanted to be out there.

"Outside! Outside! Outside!" Willard found himself screaming at his understudy, Portland's Shaquice Allen, who tried to cut back inside and ran into Vernon Singletary for a four-yard loss.

"You had the outside," Willard told Allen as the first team offence walked off the field.

"Vasquez was right there," Allen said.

I could have beaten Vasquez Willard thought. At least without this, he said, as he rubbed his hamstring. He knew that he would have played if their match against Bettia were today. He knew he'd be in there for sure if it were the World Bowl finals. But right now, caution was the rule of the day.

And it drove him nuts.

The Dancougar Black Wings are drawn up from the best amateur and semi-professionals in the country and have generally done all right, and they'll be expected to compete for a repeat on home turf. It won't be easy after a pretty large turnover from the last tournament. The team's offense revolves around a power running game and the defense is a 3-4 scheme with a variety of blitz packages. Its playing style is -2 and they go for two logically. Here are the depth charts by position. Game time approaches
by Jim Tublowski

The tournament opener is fastidiously approaching, and over the past week the Lurikastani team has been practicing hard, and often. Abe Romez remarked "I have not done this much work in one week ever" about the training regiment, "We are tired, but we are ready." The team are spending the hours before the game meditating in their locker room in the Kjoma Isles, a stark contrast to the days before which were work oriented.

Today's game is expected to be an offensive game for both sides with the score expected to be 30-27 Lurikastan.

Katie’s Blog

It was true. That damn bull, ugh! They don’t want us to curse in our blogs because there will be children reading it, but it is really difficult for me to contain myself. I really wanted to give Arroza the benefit of the doubt when the point-shaving scandal came about. They seemed like a good team, and what would they have against us? We’d always have had good relations, I had thought. Or at least I don’t recall us doing anything bad towards them. But it was true that motherf(censored) really did it. This was an excerpt from the trial of one Andreas Tahlequah,

It hurts my soul to see a delicate woman get hit like that.”

Can you believe that? He just came out and admitted that he had cheated, and he doesn’t stop there. His sexist comments are enough to make anyone sick. Glorified cheerleaders? Yeah, sure. Then how come you had to cheat to keep us OUT of the playoffs? We play hard and aren’t afraid of the physical nature of football. I will catch a pass between the hash marks with Fremont Cannon ready to unload a big hit on me, and they only thing I’m thinking about is hang on to the ball. If we couldn’t take hits, we wouldn’t be here. Sure, we might not break as many tackles as players on other teams do, but I think that we beat most of our opponents in terms of agility, and that can be quite an equalizer. So this (censored) cheated and it all comes out now, on the eve of World Bowl 7? Figures, doesn’t it? Consider us ready. Consider us motivated. It’s time to get some payback on them and on the world! We want Arroza and we will beat everyone in our path in order to make it happen. Hopefully.

We are in Group E with good ol’ Qazox. Also baseball champion Tocrowkia, and another familiar name from baseball in Steroga. The newbies in the group are The Fanboyists and The Babbage Islands, the latter of which played well in the Baptism of Iron. They surprised me a little bit, I expected to see more women on their roster given the nature of Babbage Rules football. This will be a pretty challenging group, but we’re not about to come up short. Not after what happened to us last time. Curse you Tahlequah!

Re: World Bowl 7: Everything Thread

Postby The Fanboyists » Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:05 pm

The game was set to begin soon.

Fans were tailgating, chatting and drinking beer happily (except those underage, obviously), and were preparing for the Barrons' international debut. People were beginning to file into the stadium, and already many of the sections were a sea of blue and burgundy.

In the lockerrooms, things were deathly calm, as the players were preparing for the game: last minute taping, viewing film, refitting pads, stretching, idle chatter, praying (many of the Barron's players were devout Catholics), and, in the case of Dane Zacks and Danny Rickenbacher, talking with Coach Studdenberger.

"So what do you think we need to keep the focus on, Coach?" Dane asked quietly.

"From all the film I've seen, Babbage Islands is a well-rounded team. They're offense and defense are both fairly strong, but neither one particularly stands out. I think we're going to need to fall back on defense here. Danny, you know what to do?"

"Yessir. They run a lot, do they?"

"From the looks of it. Looks like a 'bone. Calling for a lot of blitzes here. Lay 'em all out. Stuff 'em. You need to give Dane and the others room to do their work, OK? You pulled it off perfectly all week in those scrimmages, against the Ironmongers at the Championships, we're counting on you guys to do it again." Wilhelm turned to Zacks. "Dane, screens and runs, until they show they can stop them. Our physicality is our strength. Passing where necessary, but be ready for lots of screens and hand-offs. If we need to fake it, we'll have Theo switching in with you. Ok?"

"Yessir. Should we go talk it over as units, sir?"

"Go ahead."

Dane and Danny headed off to confer with the coordinators and with the other players in the Offense and Defense respectively. They talked it over with their teammates, the summary being "hit hard and fast, don't lose your concentration. We can hit harder than these guys, trample them." Finally, as they were preparing to step out onto the field, Dane prepared to break it down.

"Y'all, we've been through a lot as a team...no, as brothers. We are fuckin' family here. We're gonna go out, pound those guys who talk bad about our family. Have each others backs: that's what brothers do, and thats what you're gonna do for your brothers here. Everyone's writing us off. We gotta smash 'em and show the world that we aren't gonna let anyone walk out with an easy game. We're gonna fight and fight for every yard, every foot, every inch. This is our turf. We defend it." He took a breath. Looked around. Bellowed.

"ONE!...TWO!...THREE!!!..." The next part could be heard even outside the locker room. Some of the people in the opposite stands swore they heard it.

"BARRONS!!!"

This was it. This was where to make a statement. This was where the Barrons would shine, or set a trend of defeat.

This was it.

This is your matchday 1 RP cutoff! It's also the deadline for establishing your playing style; all teams who haven't will use the default. All teams may change their style once with an accompanying RP from this point on.

=================================

Scores for MD1 are final! The upset of the day is definitely Palmouth's road win in Newmanistan, while memories of World Bowl 3 qualifying were recalled by a couple of complete pastings. Vephrall, Dancougar, and Arroza blew through their opposition, although none could match Qazox for sheer brutality. The only question they're asking now... is what on Earth did the Dancougar organizers feed Margaret before that one?

Group A
Vephrall 41-3 Barbana
Newmanistan 6-10 Palmouth
Norwellia 17-20 Scandavian States

Group B
Secristan 13-0 Delaclava
Vartican 26-10 Iglesian Archipelago
Lanceo 9-43 Dancougar

Group C
Kura-Pelland 16-12 Prux
Holy Marsh 19-24 Fujisawan Territories
Kjoma Isles 3-20 Lurikastan

Group D
Taeshan 16-0 Quakmybush
Allanea 13-17 Chetssaland
Ameriganastan 10-14 Lovisa

Group E
Qazox 52-0 Steroga
The Fanboyists 3-10 The Babbage Islands
Cassadaigua 16-6 Tocrowkia

Group F
Sibirsky 6-7 Jagada
Bluth Corporation 13-51 Arroza
Bettia 15-17 Sarzonia

Tables after MD2.

(After the game)

Thompson (Coach): Kenny, are you ok?

O’Hara (QB): It was tough to be rushed into this game given the circumstances coach.

Westcott (HB): I agree, it was rough.

Thompson: Let us all be greatful that we are still here. Still alive and still able to play football. Maybe we should have campaigned the organizers to not play our game today but I thought we could all rally around it, ya know?

Bywater (WR): Everyone made it without serious injury.

Thompson: We’ll get through it. Don’t worry about the group standings. We’ll emerge from it just fine.

They were all referencing this incident, of course…

ROCKETS PLANE MAKES CRASH LANDING IN KNIGHTSVILLE

Knightsville- The plane carrying the Newmanistan Rockets football team suffered a catastrophic engine failure while in flight from Pocono City to Olympia this morning. They were due to face Palmouth at Olympia Field. Thanks to the heroic efforts of Pilot James Sullivan, a horrifying crash was avoided, and the plane landed safely in a small rural area outside the town of Knightsville, roughly 80 miles east of Olympia. According to Sullivan, a 63-year old pilot with 40 years of flight experience including some in the Newmanistan Air Force, “We heard a loud bang followed by another loud bang and right away we were going down. I had trained my whole life for this kind of situation. I never thought I would have to face it but I felt as though I was prepared for it. I did what I could to maintain control of the plane as we made our descent, and fortunately we had a nice wide field in which I could land the plane. It was a rough landing, and some of the passengers were shaken up by it, but there were no fatalities and not even any major injuries. We are all very fortunate.”

Linebacker Jesse Savage called it the most frightening event of his life. “Sullivan got on the radio and just asked us all to remain calm. It was hard, I have never faced something more scary and more frightening in my life.” All players were sent to the Knightsville City Hospital for evaluation for precautionary reasons, and released within three hours, before they boarded a shuttle bus for Olympia Field. The bus arrived in Olympia only 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the game. Despite some speculation that the team would ask for the game to be postponed, they thought it would be in their best interest to simply get through it, and likely felt as though they could beat Palmouth with absolutely no sleep and no practice time.

Re: World Bowl 7: Everything Thread

Postby Sarzonia » Mon Jun 22, 2009 9:06 pm

In the end, it wasn't a gimmick.

Sarzonia gave Bettia a rude welcome back to the world of international gridball courtesy of the right leg of Adam Novak. His 52-yard field goal with 4:37 remaining lifted the Stars to a 17-15 victory in the first game of World Bowl 7.

After running back LoQuan Willard sat out the final day of practice due to a balky hamstring injured before the team left on its flight to Bettia, he sat out the lone day of practice in Bettia, but took part in a walk through. The rest helped the Woodstock running back, and he rushed 40 times for 156 yards and two scores.

"Our game plan was to establish the ground game," said quarterback Gavin Davis, who completed 11 of 18 passes for 146 yards. "We made a concerted effort to run the ball considering Bettia's multi-sport penchant for heavy offence."

Sarzonia played keep-away about as well as they ever have, holding the ball for 41 minutes, 29 seconds. Even though the Aroras (0-1) had the ball for less than half the time Sarzonia did, their offence still put up 15 points against the Stars. However, the Stars (1-0) were prepared for the Aroras going for two-point conversions, denying both attempts after touchdowns. Ishmail Williams kicked a 42-yard field goal to provide Bettia with its other points.

"We wanted to make sure they couldn't get on track against us," said coach Joe Gibbs. "Offensively, that meant we had to keep the ball."

Defensively, it meant Greg Blache also had to dial up some blitzes. The Stars sacked Aroras quarterback Muhammad Myers six times and forcing three fumbles (two lost). They also picked off three Myers passes, leading directly to both Willard touchdowns. However, Bettia also blitzed frequently, sacking Davis twice and knocking him down 11 times.

"We've got to do a better job of keeping guys off Davis," said left tackle Tim Lacker. "Otherwise, we're going to be in trouble."

CHARLESTON, South Island (BPA) -- The Babbage Islands wishbone attack gained a lot of yards, nearly 400 on the night. But it took a fourth-quarter, 36-yard halfback option pass from Bobby Sherman to Mary-Lynn Burns to secure a Bumblebees victory over the Fanboyists, 10-3, in their World Bowl debut.

"The wishbone certainly helped us with time of possession," remarked interim coach Bill Julian. "But Fanboyists were well prepared in the red zone, and we had a hard time closing the deal."

Kicker Angela DiFilippo is questionable for tomorrow's Tocrowkia game at Capital Stadium. She limped off the field after her second-quarter 42-yard field goal gave Babbage a 3-0 lead, and did not return. Outside linebacker Joe Smith is also questionable.
