Background

The MTV-94/S is the scout version of the MTV-94.

Command, control, and targeting

The MTV-94/S showcases the latest developments in military technology from Ionicus. The MTV-94/S was designed around Metix Digital System's SWORD Combat Integration System. Operators of the MTV-94 can track friendly unit's positions, as well as track enemy unit's positions. Target highlighting allows for the command of weaponry, such as artillery, from the MTV-94. The integration with the SWORD Combat Integration System also allows for each unit to be monitored from a central command post. Battlefield commanders can view all vehicle operational status, check casualty count, set navigational way points, and issue commands over either an audio signal, or a text message.

The driver's position has three touchscreen displays, allowing for the driver to see navigation information, vehicle status, weapon status, and various other information types. The commander (who usually also serves as the gunner) can also view this information. A multitude of cameras provide a 360 degree view around the vehicle and can be accessed by any crew member. Thermal optic modes are available on each camera, allowing for a viewing distance of 8,000 ft at night or in poor weather. Periscopes are also provided to the driver position in the event of a camera's failure.

Armament

The scout variant of the MTV-94 is equipped with a remote weapons station (RWS), which can be fitted with either a 12.7mm machine gun, or a 20mm grenade launcher. The RWS is controlled from the gunner/commander's spot, located near the center of the vehicle. The RWS provides an armored camera unit, capable of both optic and thermal views, for the aiming of the weapon. An armored shell covers the mounted weapon, to protect it from small arms fire or shrapnel from a blast.

The 20mm grenade launcher variant includes an additional suite of fire control software. The 20mm launcher is capable of using configurable munitions. This allows for a warhead type to be selected, as well as a fuse program to be loaded. The operator can, for instance, choose a high explosive warhead, set to air burst mode for eliminating infantry units.

Survivability

The MTV-94/S, as all vehicles operated by the United Technocratic Republics of Ionicus, was designed with crew survivability in mind. The driver's position features a wall of solid titanium allow along the front and sides to provide additional protection from armor piercing rounds and explosives. Explosive bolts, detonated from an emergency activation panel in the driver's position, allow for the driver's hatch to be quickly removed. An automatic firefighting system is present throughout the vehicle, with modules in the crew compartment and engine compartments. The system can be activated either automatically, by the triggering of thermal or pressure sensors, or by the activation button, located within reach of each crew member. The fuel tank, which uses diesel fuel (less explosive than gasoline), is equipped with a self-sealing foam.

The MTV-94/S is capable of operating in areas where chemical, biological, or radiological materials are present. The interior of the MTV-94 is kept at a higher air pressure than the outside air pressure. In the event of a hull breech, this will prevent contaminated air from seeping into the crew compartments of the vehicle. The activation of filters for operating inside a contaminated area can be accomplished by the activation of a switch, a press on a touch screen monitor, or the filter cartridges can be installed manually, without having to exit the vehicle.

All of the electronic systems within the MTV-94/S are shielded from electromagnetic pulse. This applies to all variants of the MTV-94.

Crew Comforts

The MTV-94/S was designed to provide a higher level of comfort than most modern armored personnel carriers. This is especially important for missions that demand a high level of crew endurance.

Unusual for most military vehicles, the MTV-94 is outfitted with an air conditioning and heating unit to keep the crew comfortable in desert or arctic conditions. Additionally, the MTV-94 uses standard automotive seats found in PAK Automotive's line of vehicles to provide a high level of comfort. A 300 liter water tank is kept at the front of the vehicle, with drinking straws at all stations to maintain crew hydration levels. An auxiliary 40 L liquid storage tank is also outfitted in the vehicle, which can hold electrolyte or caffeinated (or a blend of both) to be kept to maintain crew operational status.

Engine

The MTV-94/S is equipped with a 380 horsepower diesel electric engine, capable of propelling the vehicle up to 160 km/h (99mph) on land. The diesel electric hybrid engine allows for an improved fuel economy thereby extending the range. The hybrid engine also provides more electricity than a conventional motor, allowing for more electronics to be outfitted. The MTV-94/S is capable of operating in either a all-wheel-drive mode or a rear-wheel-drive where the rear 8 tires are powered.

The engineers at PAK Automotive strove to produce not only a reliable engine, but one that could be maintained easily. The onboard self-diagnostic program displays which parts of the engines are in need of maintenance. Thanks to the usage of quick access panels, most components of the vehicle can be replaced in less time than it would to take on a civilian automobile.

Mobility

The MTV-94/S utilizes the same powerplant as the larger MTV-94, allowing for the MTV-94/S to attain higher ground speeds than the MTV-94. The MTV-94/S is also lighter, allowing for mobility across a wider variety of terrain.

The MTV-94/S was designed to be extremely mobile. It's usage of run-flat tires instead of tracks allows for higher speeds to be accomplished. The tires also provide buoyancy when the vehicle is operated amphibiously. The MTV-94/S's light weight allows for it to be airlifted in sizable quantities. The MTV-94/S is also capable of being airdropped from aircraft. Additionally, electronic control modules on board the MTV-94/S allows for the control of suspension firmness and tire pressure to be altered, providing mobility over a wide range of terrains, such as snow, mud, and sand.

The MTV-94/S is capable of amphibious operation. In the water, the MTV-94/S is propelled by four propeller units, located in armored housings at the rear of the vehicle. The MTV-94/S can be made water capable in under 15 seconds. The crew must simply select the amphibious operations mode, and the MTV-94 will automatically open the armored doors covering the propeller units, divert electrical power to the propellers, and alter tire pressure.

Artillery Capabilities
The rear compartment of the MTV-94 can be equipped with a 155mm artillery unit. The 155mm artillery unit is almost fully autonomous, requiring only human interaction to fire the weapon. The artillery unit can automatically load rounds, aim the weapon, and program co-ordinates into GPS guided munitions. The artillery unit is capable of being fired remotely, either from a command position, or by infantrymen.
