The Austerlitz-Class is a line of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (aka SSN's) designed to replace the Federal Eastern Union Navy's aging Phalania-Class Attack Submarines. Built for an array of both open-ocean and littoral missions, the Austerlitz-Class was constructed to become the 'champion beneath the waves': it was made to hunt down enemy submarines and surface combatants alike, while retaining the capability to wreak havoc against land and littoral targets. With its construction commencing in 2007 and the first of its class, the E.S.S. Austerlitz, entering service in 2012, the Austerlitz-Class is estimated to form a powerful edge of the Federal Eastern Union Navy's attack submarine force.

A primary problem that had caused submarine engineers headaches was the submarine's elusiveness: within the seas, submarines had to evade detection methods to keep itself hidden, and show up like a wraith when it has to kill. In the modern age, things have gone much more difficult than before: new technology, including magnetic anomaly detectors, have made the submarines more difficult to stay elusive. To give a solution to this, the Austerlitz-Class has a hull consisting of titanium: formidable and non-magnetic, the hull itself makes the submarine immune to magnetic anomaly detectors. In addition, it uses sound isolation, shock mounts and an acoustic counter system (a system that creates bending sound waves to mask itself) to make the submarine more silent beneath the waves. Furthermore, to at least partially solve the Bernoulli-hump generated in the process of a ship's movement, the Austerlitz-Class has the Submarine Pressure Regulator System (SPRS) that minimizes the pressure difference in water flowing around the vessel in the process of the sub's movement. With these, the Austerlitz-Class brings a whole new level to a submarine's elusiveness.

As an attack submarine, the Austerlitz-Class is armed with an array of weapons that give its name as an 'attack submarine'. Built with 8 torpedo tubes (4 x 650 mm and 4 x 533 mm on standard), the Austerlitz-Class has room for up to 30 torpedoes and torpedo tube-launched missiles. Apart from the torpedo tubes, it is also equipped with 32 VLS cells (40 on extended variant), which can be equipped with an array of cruise missiles, such as the UGM-501 Thor. Furthermore, the Austerlitz-Class also has the capability to lay naval mines, in case the sub has to engage in such missions. As of now, a proposal to reduce the VLS cells to 12 and replacing them with a position to mount an ASDS is being considered by the Federal Eastern Union Navy.

To make everything possible, the Austerlitz-Class is powered by the NR-44G nuclear reactor - a quieter, more efficient version of the NR-44F reactors seen on the Liberator-Class Ballistic Missile Submarines. Furthermore, lessons learned from the Virginia-Class, the Austerlitz-Class employs a pump-jet propulsor to propel itself, which has been said to reduce noise and significantly cuts down the risk of cavitation.

The breakthrough of the Austerlitz-Class does not end here - it extends onto its electronics and equipment. Instead of a periscope found on many submarines, the Austerlitz-Class uses a photonic mast, thereby reducing wasted space and potential risks of water leakage. The mast also contains a radar mast that enables the submarine to keep alert of what stands ahead of it via radar.

Variants

  • Standard: As said before, a standard variant with 32 VLS cells, 4 x 533 mm and 4 x 650 mm torpedo tubes.
  • Extended: A lengthened redesigning of the standard variant, with 32 VLS cells, 2 x 533 mm and 6 x 650 mm torpedo tubes. Features nearly no other differences from the standard variant apart from armament.
