Kia Ora; Hi! My name is Cid Airship, and you will know from my previous project ‘Dreadnought’ thread that I am the chief representative of the Office of Procurement, Research and Development of the Luftwaffe. With this thread, I will try to explain about how the successor of the ‘Dreadnought,’ the ‘Leviathan’, become a reality.

As you would know by now if you have observed our Reich, Yohannes is a flexible nation. It do not discriminate against past technology, real life hard modern technology, fictional NationStates modern technology, post modern technology or future technology polities. We are getting along fine with just about anyone really! And that include fantasy technology nations too, by the way. But… where am I… yes *ehem*

Dear Leader and Führer Paper von Towel und Bagel was pretty much satisfied with the ‘Dreadnought’ design, and how it was designed in such a way that it can further be improved for fictional years to come. Despite this, however, the Führer realised that the ‘Dreadnought’ could not realistically stand toe-to-toe against the latest and most advanced, as well as most expensive of wonders coming out of NationStates Modern Technology nations’ constant fixations with financially ruinous vanity projects of ‘national glory’ and ‘institutional pride.’ After further subtly threatening my team with yet more Chamber of Secrets [sic] subtle references, we have had no choice but to succumb to his madness of a demand.

Firstly, we have warned Dear Leader that this design would be very expensive. He was fine with it, and he told us that he wanted to follow the great examples of close allied nations, such as Lyras in their development of a truly creative product in the form of the controversial yet admittedly very good and interesting Dragonhawk, as well as other close trading partner nations of similar background; Allanea, Holy Marsh, Lamoni, Pharthan, et cetera.

Dear Leader wanted something that is so expensive, that only those who have billions of population in their nation can afford this vanity design; something so expensive, that only the latest of crafts would be included in it.

We were fine with this too, though we have had to sternly warn him that this design would very much be unsuitable for nations that exist within the hard real life realms of the vast NS RPing World. Unlike the hard, realist modern technology ‘Dreadnought,’ which employed only widely operated and combat tested real life technologies, this project, which was named ‘Project Leviathan’ by the Führer himself, would result in a completely out-of-whack NationStates Modern Technology design: able to be operated by, and available only to those nations who do not exist within the hard realist, earth-based population and capped realms of the NS RPing World.

NAVAL & PRECISION STEALTH


The ZL-9Y, also known as the ‘Leviathan’ among VMK R&D circles, is the currently planned second indigenous ‘stealth’ aircraft design of the nineteen countries. It is a fifth generation, very low radar cross section, high-subsonic, intercontinental and multiregional strategic bomber known throughout the nineteen countries and powerful close trading partner nations - such as Allanea and Stevid - as the ‘Superdreadnought.’

It is the full on NationStates Modern Technology and advanced version of its more real life modern technology predecessor, the ‘Dreadnought.’ It is designed to strike horror and terror, as well as to act as the harbinger of destruction to the non earth-based and non-realist, more NationStates modern technology [NS MT] nations of the NationStates Roleplaying World [NS RP World] or Multiverse.

Its two main roles are:

1. To act as a very long range precision strike bomber able to travel around the length of a theoretical NS MT region virtually undetected under normal circumstances. Warmongering nations and scavenging militaries are meant to use it to destroy buildings or something full of nice fluffies while causing minimal damage to their surroundings. It is not designed for indiscriminate carpet bombing World War II style of operation.

2. To assume the role of a very long range naval interdiction bomber able to travel the oceans of a NS MT region virtually undetected under normal circumstances. A nation can use it in a roleplay thread to slow down or prevent enemy forces from getting the supplies to fuel their war machines on the front line.

The ‘Leviathan’ draws on the indigenously designed Yohannesian variation and adaptation of the already existing flying wing concept used by the ‘Dreadnought,’ slightly altered and redesigned to make into reality its planned improved capabilities. Although there are a multitude of differences in terms of technical approaches used on the ‘Leviathan’ to maintain the radar cross section value of the original ‘Dreadnought,’ the three main differences - and subsequent improvements - of the ‘Leviathan’ to the ‘Dreadnought’ are:

1. The first main difference would be the noticeably altered visualisation, or look from the outside, of this design. Unlike the ‘Dreadnought,’ a pair of circulation controlled canards are placed on either side of the front point or nose of the ‘Leviathan,’ improving the total lift of its wings in the process. This pair of canards are also not static, and in fact they can be withdrawn whenever the crew wanted in different operational situation requirement.This also means that the ‘Leviathan’ has a much better pitch during low speed operation.

2. The second main difference would be the use of more advanced NationStates modern technology composite materials that are applied to the fuselage of the ‘Leviathan;’ where ~78-80% of these composite materials, more or less the same percentage as the ‘Dreadnought,’ are used as the foundation of its select surface. Thanks to this, the much larger ‘Leviathan’ can somewhat maintain the infra-red as well as LiDAR detection and related vulnerability limitation values of the ‘Dreadnought.’ The combination applied to ~78-80% foundation of the ‘Leviathan’ is basically made up of:


• Boron filaments put to targeted parts of the fuselage, with;
  
  
• High-temperature semi-crystalline thermoplastic organised polymers acting as its important foundation, and;
  
  
• The further application of semi-crystalline polymers as second base filament materials for the above, as well as;
  
  
• Any customised NS MT or real life coated and treated polymers that can realistically accommodate the above combination to further wrap together the above finished combination.

The benefits of this composite foundation combination are:

1. A much better strength, and composite integrity, than the more realist-based, hard real life modern technology composite materials used on the ‘Dreadnought,’ for;

2. More or less the exact same relative mass or load of the composite used on the ‘Dreadnought,’ and;

3. Noticeably improved stress and strain reaction against almost any natural or man-made intentional impending force, while ensuring;

4. Simultaneous elasticity for an overall good resilience, as well as;

5. The lowering of infra-red and LiDAR detection as well as related vulnerabilities as mentioned previously above, and finally;

6. Reducing the possibility of detection by the latest of any of the enemies’ NS MT next generation aircraft.

As mentioned above under the coated and treated section, the material used for this is yet another radar absorbing combination product of Royal Lindblum Engineering plc. largely inspired by the original Sephiroth skin prototype used on the more real life MT ‘Dreadnought.’

This combination is made up of extremely low density and solid low thermal conductivity and covalently bonded particles of aero-gel divided into thin cells, criss-crossed and slanted specifically for operational customisation. The benefits of this combination are:

1. The ability of the ‘Leviathan’ to throw back any signals from any transmitting devices within a limited range, in a repeated manner if need be. This especially protects the ‘Leviathan’ from semi passive coherent or covert multi-static or bi-static electronics & detection methods, meaning that under certain limited situations it can be;

2. Very temporarily or in a very short time ‘invincible’ from any high or low frequency measures directed against it, whether they come from;

3. Ground, air or naval platform and mounted.

The negative result or weaknesses of this added extraordinary capabilities are:

1. A much more expensive: much, much more expensive composite materials and combination costs;

2. A much, much more - though not as much as the above - sensitive treatment and maintenance, meaning a much higher operational cost as well as the crucial need to ensure only the highest standard of crew and maintenance training among not just the crew, but also;

3. Every single personnel in charge of regularly inspecting and maintaining the ‘Leviathan,’ which also results in;

4. The impossibility of more earth-based, capped population nations to afford the NS MT luxury known as the ‘Leviathan.’

5. The very short time of the above ‘invincibility,’ meaning that concerted efforts made by the enemies or a thoroughly overwhelming immediate tactical air superiority of the opposing side rendered most of the above benefits meaningless.

Thanks to the stealth technologies mentioned above, and more RCS limitation technologies currently researched by my team that will be released once they are ready, the RCS of the ‘Leviathan’ is only slightly higher than the ‘Dreadnought,’ which makes it unfortunately higher than the real life American Northrop-Grumman B-2, which are somewhat inevitable considering that the ‘Leviathan’ is much larger than the ‘Dreadnought.’ What takes must give as well, for otherwise such would be an unfair travesty.

The Meritocracy of Pharthan expresses interest in this new design, having found it fills a niche only partially covered by Halcyon Arm's own bomber designs. As such we would like to make an investment equal to the currently projected price of 24 (twenty-four) ZL-97 Leviathans. Once a final price is concluded and production units are being constructed, Pharthan will pay any uncovered remainder.

If there is any way the Meritocracy of Pharthan or Halcyon Arms can assist VMK in the endeavor, we would be able to do so.

ECM DEFENCE & COUNTERMEASURES


As the ‘Leviathan’ is designed to match the latest of ridiculously expensive fictional NationStates Modern Technology [NS MT] aircraft around the NationStates Roleplaying World [NS RP World], it is thus equipped with some of the equally and most ridiculously expensive electronics that would theoretically be available to the nineteen countries in the ‘high-threat, full spectrum over-match ambience of the omega sized NS RP World.’

It is equipped with its own FFIX [Final Fantasy IX] all weather low probability of intercept active electronically scanned array multiple function radar antennae to increase its electronic countermeasures & warfare capabilities within a broad range of electromagnetic spectrum, with an attenuated overlay surface or coating of extremely and certainly most expensive theoretical and fictional NS MT radar absorbing composite and dielectric doused materials based closely on that of the mentioned combination provided in the previous ‘NAVAL & PRECISION STEALTH’ section.

These are used to ensure the extremely small effect that can be had with the inclusion of the FFIX for the already notably low radar cross section of the ‘Leviathan.’ The FFIX can also be switched to passive mode, allowing the crew to commence with radar lock-on warning at medium to long range and if need be at high speed, thus giving crew of the ‘Leviathan’ quite the time to ponder how best to counter the threats presented before their very own eyes.

The FFIX ensures that:

1. Where RCS is not an extremely important requirement, this design will be ECM effective in high and dangerous NS MT threats environment, and;

2. Can operate a low capacity or power scan mode as an alternative to the above if need be to ensure even lower signatures of electromagnetic radiation without needing to turn off this system, thus supporting;

3. The extent to which the ‘Leviathan’ can discover and detect almost any sharp or high momentum and velocity as well as low observable NS MT designs unimpaired, under;

4. Its short to medium range and close limit with ~84% rate of success.

When the transmission of signals or discharging and electromagnetic outflow are deemed bad depending on the tactical RP scenario, the Chocobo 3FTW [Formulated Laser & Infrared Non-Signature Tracking Warning] non-signature receiving system with its signal interception ability allows for yet another way to counter possible minor threats, albeit can be ineffective in the process:

1. Allowing crew of the ‘Leviathan’ to discover possible threats and react accordingly, as well as;

2. Identifying the angle of arrival and wavelength of the light coming from these threats.

The Chocobo 3FTW is supported with the Royal Lindblum Engineering Garland M&M F-2LP multimode centralised plane array seeker, which include an electronic radiation quantum discharger and supported system in the form of the Detection, Communication & Compilated Information Circuit [DCCC or the ‘D & Triple C’], giving the crew the information they will need by computerising the images they gathered per pixel, with its ability to accurately identify possible threats at up to 100 mm of 3D visual perception and in-depth imaging.

The Triple C measures the distance or travel time of the emitted electronic radiation quantum spread around the surface of the ‘Leviathan’ from the threats detected, resulting in only slightly higher but crucially needed accuracy, as well as allowing for the extended range of visual perception and in-depth imaging potentials. With the above configuration, the combined systems designed to support one another can:

1. Detect and subsequently track up to 200 incoming targets simultaneously, within the estimated potential range of;

2. Outer radius of 150 km, inner radius of 100 km around the ‘Leviathan,’ and ground data gathering capacity of up to 100 km range from above, though realistically limited;

3. By tactical and on ground RP situation, and thus can be countered quite effectively by a skilled national leader [of the enemy], as realistically any NS MT designs should be.
