The Type 1189 is a gargantuan nuclear-powered command submarine designed by Yongsheng Heavy Machinery Industries. Known as the “Killer Whale”, the Type 1189 has become a symbol of Zhouran’s astounding underwater supremacy.

Development on the submarine started in early 1995. The Zhouranese People’s Army Navy wanted a nuclear-powered submarine that could expand Zhouran’s underwater capabilities and annihilate an entire carrier battle group. Known as Project Silent Whale, several scientists and engineers, along with Zhouran’s top naval advisors, were involved in the project. A prototype submarine, which was the first Type 1189, made its first sail in late 2006. After years of testing, the Type 1189 entered service on April 14, 2011.

The submarine has the ability to deliver special operations commandos, wipe-out an entire fleet of warships on its own, and conduct critical surveillance operations over a wide area. The Type 1189 is arguably one of the quietest submarines in the world ever constructed. It is exceptionally quiet even at high speeds. It has been rumored that the submarine can cruise at high speed and still be impossible to locate.

The technology fitted onboard the submarine is highly classified, and information on the Type 1189 is rare. Although, it has been said that the submarine uses upgraded technology from the Type 1182 nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine.

The Type 1189 uses four highly-sophisticated pump-jets. Onboard the submarine are two advanced silent nuclear reactors. The submarine is equipped with a spherical sonar. The sonar system consists of a spherical bow array, flank arrays and a towed array.

The submarine’s armament system consists of twelve 650mm torpedo tubes and forty cell-launched Type 78 anti-ship missiles.

The Type 1182 is a class of nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine built by Yongsheng Heavy Machinery Industries. Using state-of-the-art technology, it is truly an advanced submarine. Sailors have given the Type 1182 the nickname “Silent Shark.”

Advances include a compact and integrated hydrodynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise and the first ever use of pump-jet propulsion on a Zhouranese nuclear submarine. The Type 1182 is equipped with a floating rescue chamber designed to fit in the whole crew.

The submarine is armed with sixteen Type 78 anti-ship missiles, which are launched from a 16-cell VLS. The submarine is also fitted with six 533mm torpedo tubes.

The hull is constructed from low-magnetic steel. Thanks to the submarine’s high degree of automation, the Type 1182 only requires a crew of 87. The submarine’s advanced silent nuclear reactor has a 25-30 year core life.

The first Type 1182 was commissioned on October 3, 2001.
