Ossumnia Naval Yard
Centrifuge-class frigate
History
Following the discovery of uranium deposits in the southern part of Ossumnia, the Ossumnian leadership came to the decision to expand the country's exports to include warships. The government invested 3.3 billion in the creation of Ossumnia Naval Yard, which is to become the principal source of the nation's sea-going vessels. The government also invested nearly a billion into the weapons manufacturer Ossumnian Arms Corp., which produced the most high-tech deck gun to ever be mounted on an operational warship.
Overview
The Centrifuge-class frigate is ONY's first offering to the international arms market. The frigate is designed to be a long range surface-to-surface warfare ship capable of destroying even the smallest target from over 150 miles away. The frigate is powered by the same A4W reactor found in American Nimitz-class supercarriers, which allows it to have unmatched speed and range. The deck gun, designed by Ossumnian Arms Corp., is the first railgun to be used in military service, and is primarily geared toward the engagement of surface targets. The frigate is equipped with OAC's specially designed OA-55X radar system, which uses all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum to defeat frequency-agile jammers and is capable of tracking surface targets at a distance of greater than 35 miles. The powerful reactor system is coupled with a large, specially designed rudder that enables tight maneuvering even at slow speeds. The Centrifuge-class frigate is designed to revolutionize the way naval warfare is conducted.
Logistics
The Centrifuge-class frigate has enough room in the hull to accommodate over 500 enlisted men and 50 officers, which is more than adequate to prepare the ship for battle. The frigate comes complete with a 1200 cubic foot store room for foodstuffs and an 1800 cubic foot ammunition storage room, which provides well over 500 rounds of ammunition for the railgun. The hull is made out of titanium alloy, which is immensely strong and also serves to reduce the weight, and therefore the draft, of the frigate, as well as improving handling. The frigate also contains a fully functioning medical ward, a kitchen and mess hall, a bridge, Combat Information Center, exercise room, and armory. This allows the frigate to undertake extended combat sorties in excess of 8 months in duration. The aft deck is helicopter-compatible, allowing the frigate to carry a helicopter that weighs up to 25 tons. Flight operations are controlled from CIC.
Armament
OAC's revolutionary railgun is the most advanced and (dare we say it?) lethal weapon to ever be put onto a ship. The OA-680A naval railgun uses 4 sets of electromagnetically charged rails spaced 90 degrees apart to accelerate a 40-pound projectile to a speed of Mach 9 (6850 miles per hour), which gives the projectile a range of over 150 miles. The impact of this non-explosive warhead is the equivalent of a fully loaded fighter-bomber slamming into the target at about 160 miles per hour. The railgun is able to fire one projectile ever 10 seconds (6 rounds per minute). The kinetic energy of this round is enough to blast through any man-made armor and is capable of penetrating 3 feet of solid granite. The projectile is designed to give a predictable, stable flight path. The idea behind this weapon system is to disable an enemy warship's engines or engage their magazine, detonating that ship's own munitions and sending it up in a ball of fire. In addition, the fire-control computer is accurate enough to place a round within 5 feet of a GPS-designated target.
Defense
The frigate carries a multi-layered defense system which includes the railgun. The railgun is equipped to fire timed warheads which expand after a stated period of time into thousands of projectiles. These projectiles, still traveling well over Mach 8, are capable of ripping through anything that might be advancing on the ship, from a guided cruise missile to an enemy fighter. The frigate is also equipped with chaff rockets and flares that can be fired from the rear of the ship to decoy any missiles that may get through the railgun. In addition, the multi-layered titanium hull, along with watertight compartments and automatic damage-control systems, provide an excellent last line of defense should the frigate be hit.
