About Us:

Our History
Ironbound Equipment Corporation was established in 2073ce as The Ironbound Equipment Company in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. A manufacturer of custom heavy equipment; it was founded by Carlos and Erica Silva, long time Ironbound residents. Many of their early custom builds included cranes used in building construction. This led to their first railroad contract to build a custom Maintenance of Way (MOW) crane for CSX Transportation who operated out of nearby Oak Island Yard. Pleased with the crane CSX ordered 2 more to replace their aging MOW equipment and further contracted The Ironbound Equipment Company to design and build a small electric switching locomotive for CSX's locomotive maintenance shops in Cumberland, Maryland. The "Ironbound Equipment Company Type YS-50T" (50ton 500HP 2axle yard switcher) became the first locomotive built by The Ironbound Equipment Company and it's success led to innovative locomotive designs that continue to this day.

Supporting our Employees
We want to be a corporation where people can expand their abilities and build their career in an environment that reflects and respects their values. With over 200 full-time and part-time employees, we place a priority on providing a supportive environment in which each employee is part of the Ironbound Equipment family.

Full and part-time employees have access to medical, life and disability insurance, as well as, a 401K plan to those with one year of employment. This plan features a company contribution for every dollar the employee contributes. The company also offers a vacation plan, 9 holidays per year and Sundays off so employees can spend the day with their families and friends.

At IEC, most benefits are available to full and part-time employees after their first six month evaluation and are extended to their children, spouses and domestic partners.

Ironbound Equipment Corp. is an equal opportunity employer.

Assisting our Community
With a strong focus on youth, Ironbound Equipment Corp. is committed to supporting the Ironbound neighborhood and greater Newark through donations, community outreach and employee volunteer programs.

Under the leadership of President & CEO Carlos Silva, our corporation has continually increased it's commitment to the community with a broad spectrum of charitable donations and volunteer work. Supporting schools, youth organisations, civic organisations, events and organisations such as the Ironbound Animal Shelter and Ironbound Ambulance Squad of which many of our employees and our founders Carlos and Erica Silva volunteer with.

From the first day of employment, our employees are immersed in a climate of progressive programs designed to encourage employee participation and ownership in our commitment to safety. From monthly safety meetings and area audits to Incentive Programs and indepth training, Ironbound Equipment Corp. is committed to making safety the first consideration in everything we do.

Caring about our Environment
Running our company in an environmentally friendly way is good for the environment and good for our business. We're working to conserve energy and reduce waste in our manufacturing processes, and we are continually implamenting more efficient technologies in our products.

Ironbound Equipment Corp. has a mission to create and maintain a working environment that is safe for our employees, the communities in which we work, and the earth on which we live.

We strive to promote environmental stewardship throughout our business - from the expectations we set with our manufacturing staff to our external vendors. Our environmental focus also includes monitoring our daily business decisions affecting purchasing, marketing, and facility management.

To prioritize our efforts, we recently set out to identify the level of control and influence we have over our environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle of our products - from raw materials we use to the disposal of the waste we generate each day. We are implementing changes in our manufacturing processes and our support personnel's consumable office materials to institute new recycling programs. In the meantime, IEC recycles all waste oils and fuels, batteries, as well as recycling cardboard shipping containers.

Our Vision
“Continue to be a regional leader in the manufacture and design of high quality production and custom locomotives, rolling stock and heavy equipment with an increased global presence.”

Low Emission Diesel Locomotives

The LE SERIES is the first design innovation over the single engine prime mover, which was developed in the 1950s. This rethinking of locomotive design allows the LE SERIES to apply a new configuration to standard rail purposes for superior results.

Replacing the single engine prime mover with three gen-sets producing equal horsepower coordinated by 21st century computer and electronic controls, allows the LE SERIES to not only exceed the capacity of the prime movers to move freight and passengers but with unmatched reductions in NOx and PMs emissions (85-90%), noise (85%), fuel consumption (40%-60%) and maintenance costs (35-50%), Ironbound Equipment Corp.'s LE SERIES is fast becoming the engine of choice.

Advantages
  • Reductions of 85%-90% in NOx and PM compared to uncontrolled locomotive emissions
  • Ultra low emissions of NOx below 3.0 grams per brake horsepower hour
  • Ultra low emissions of PM below .10 grams per brake horsepower hour
  • 85%+ reductions in noise attenuation levels similar to on-highway trucks
  • Fuel savings of 35%-70% dependent on the applications
  • Reductions in locomotive mechanical and electrical maintenance costs from 35%-50%+
  • Tractive effort efficiency improvements of 65%-75%+ over conventional locomotives

Capacities
  • Four axle and six axle designs
  • Horsepower ranges from 700 to 3600
  • Current speeds of up to 70 miles per hour; research and development in progress for engines
  • capable of 110+ mph
  • HEP capacities from 300KW to 525KW
  • GPS and remote site diagnostics available

Certifications
  • Certified by the Environmental Protection Agency of New York - New Jersey
  • First locomotive recognized as Ultra Low Emitting (ULE) by the Northeast Regional Air Resources Board
  • Meets all criteria of EPA regulations for 2080 Tier III
  • Meets all criteria of EPA regulations for 2082 Tier IV excepting NOx
  • Part 238 compliant for locomotive passenger services (except for those requirements related to individual specifications for which certification is only available case by case)
