"Oh. What would that be?"

"Jonathan, bring it in," she screamed. Immediately three soldiers wearing gloves walked in all holding a painting. "I hope you appreciate these pieces of Jahenian art."

"WHAT? OH MY GOD. The have been missing for centuries! The Navies Triumphant, Portrait of the Company Leader, and The Noble Businessman! Where on earth were these?"

"Before I found them in 2009? No clue, however I found them when we removed the Fist from power. I looted a house, saw those painting and kept them because they looked interesting. Along the turmoil I forgot I had these but then remembered and had an art expert check them out. So out of goodwill I am returning them."

"Many thanks to you! Our paintings are just below our music in importance to our people. They will remember this I hope."

"They better. Now go, speak to Markus, and tell him this: The fate of our nations are resting on this. War can easily erupt but it can just as easily be stopped. Good luck. For all of us."

"Alright, I shall speak to Markus. Farewell to you Katherine. And thank you for allowing me to share my history. I have longed to get it off my chest. I hope the day comes where I may change my life for thee better."

"Perhaps in another time, when Imperials may embrace Keomorans, and vice-versa, we may meet again. If you wish to blindfold me to escort me out, I am ready to leave."

At that Katherine nodded. "Colonel you know what to do."

"And please, be careful with the paintings."

When they got to the airport, the Baron said "Colonol, please wait." He ran onto the plane and came out with his pistol. "Thank you for your patience. According to the traditions of my people, I must leave a gift. Katherine is right, I never killed, and never will. This will be of more use to you than it will be to me." He handed him the pistol, elaborately decorated with gold leaf.

"I am sorry but it is against regulation to accept a gift while on duty, but I thank you for the gesture," the colonel explained," But you should keep it. Hopefully you will never need it but you never know. As it is customary to say in Keomora, life is strange. I wish you a pleasant flight." With that he gave a salute which every soldier behind him copied.

Many thoughts came to his mind.

What would all of this come to? Would there be peace after this talk, or would it come to war? No, it can't. If war comes, there will be nothing left. Imperials will stop at nothing to defend the homeland, there would be nothing left. I think Katherine knows this.

I hope she does.

Also, why did I speak to her so openly on a subject that I suppressed in my mind for years? Does this mean I am ready to reform my life, to go and find a new true love? Or am I just being Utopian, and not realizing that my life will never change?

This was only a few of his thoughts, but most were along the same lines.

Finally he reached into his wallet, and unfolded a picture. He always kept it with him, but never had unfolded it in years.

On the back it read

Dearest Love,

The war shakes me still. I am estatic to know it will soon be over, and am proud that you have been selected to build the new Capital. I know you think it is just because you are a Cornelis, but I know it is because of your education. I love you, and can't wait to start a family with you in your mountain city. Take this photo, so you may remember me when you watch the sun set every day.

Your future wife,
Alice Vydrová, soon to be proud Cornelis

He out of instint reached for a bottle, but stopped himself. No, he must allow himself to heal. To do that he must cry. Without the drink. She was why there must never be another war, because everyone had their own Alice, and he did not want them to lose her.
