July 6 2011 - 12:00pm Peace talks have started between Russia and USA Nato and the UN have stepped out and have intrusted these superpowers to talk it out. For the past year they have been fighting force on force in Afghanistan. Russia had been capturing Afghanistan one province at a time and converting them to Russians. The other countries in NATO and UN have already pulled out, only Russia remained. The United States found out what Russia was doing and took up the call for help from the Afghani officials. This war started in 2010 and has continued to the now stalemate between forces.
"Today’s top news ... Russian and American officials have met today to talk about a cease fire in Kabul today..." the newswomen said "this would be the first time since the conflict started in 2010" finally they have begun the ceasefire talks... let’s hope this ends well I thought.
I'm at my dad’s place in Caledon, Ontario he had asked me to come so I’d be way from the major cities. My mother after arguing had left me the house and my sister and her went to London where the Army was evacuating people away from the coast [and ultimately away from the United States] this was if a nuclear crisis did happen we wouldn’t be affected by the after effects. My argument was if we just empty the towns what do you thing is stopping the Russians or the United States just coming over and taking them?
I stayed there until my girlfriend and her mom stopped by, Sara was crying and telling her mom "No" I was wondering why and she told me. She wanted me to take her way somewhere far away from the southern border. She gave me car keys to a truck. This would be some time before I saw either of; Sara's mom and Saint Thomas.
Sara was crying and was trying to follow her mom I grabbed her and held her until she stopped crying.
"Sara" I finally spoke" what’s going on? What’s happening?"
"They..." she was trying to speak through her tears.
"Sara takes a deep breath and focus" I said staring into her eyes they were red and puffy. Her face was red with anger and sadness. "they are leaving to go down to the United States, to get some of our relatives" she said " they want you to take me away and I was not to call her until she call me, but Ryan they're going to die if Russia nukes them" She started to cry again her face now pressing in to my chest. She was realistically worried Russia could give up at any time and bomb the United States directly. "Sara, your mom is right its best we get out of here. I know a place where we will be close enough to the border but not directly in harm’s way." I spoke again "it will be best for the both of us and we will wait there until your mom calls you back.

I was sitting in front of the TV there was three phones in front of me each on its on line just so when friends or family would call me I’d be able to talk to them. The house was packed with supplies some of the Army forces dropped off guns and ammo so we could hold out. We were the only civilians this far south in the entire country. We are 17 men and women strong; my Dad, his girlfriend Catherine, her children; Lilly, Chris, Lizzy and John, my friends from Whitby; Aaron, Andrew and Cynthia, my friends from Saint Thomas; Devon, Grace, Kody, and Sara [my girlfriend]. I also had some friends come down from Lindsay: Brett and Tylor.
We were very fortunate to have our neighbor give us there land. [Elton john’s our neighbor] we were up in his place. Catherine and some of the others repainted the walls and such because she couldn’t stand the colour, as for the 130 acres of land we now had we hand more than enough room to spread out.
Sara came and joined me at the couch. She sat down beside me and hugged me. "Hey" she said "How are things looking?" she was looking at the news as images of war were up as the journalist was talking. "Good actually peace talks have started so this thing can end before it gets worse" I answered. "I hope". Sara was now looking at me "me too" she said she kissed me then she got up and went up stair into the office.
"WERE BACK!" Brett yelled. I jumped in my seat and spun around to see Brett and Tylor walking in the front. I yelled back "Welcome Close the Door behind You!"
"Back from recce* Nothing to report as of yet but Caledon Downtown is empty it’s a ghost town. Grabbed some food from the Shoppers in town." Tylor spoke hefting a duffle bag of supplies onto the table in the front hall.
"What did you get?" I questioned.
"Chips canned food bread water... normal stuff that should last awhile" Brett replied throwing his rifle over his shoulder.
"You didn’t shoot anyone?" I said
"Nope didn’t see anyone or anything" Tylor replied
"Ok good pack that stuff you guys got first dibs on any one item" I said "then stow it and get to your posts"
"Yes sir" Brett and Tylor said together. They when through the bags and pulled out one item and then put the rest of the food items in the cupboards and left. Brett Grabbed a can of chicken noodle soup and, Tylor grabbed a bag of Beef jerky. As they were leaving John stepped in from the outside via the front door. John was a big guy same height as me just with more weight hefting a large C6 GPMG* over his shoulder as he was stepping in.
"Hey John what’s the news from the eastern front" I joked
"Not too much I was down at our house and there is nothing" John replied laughing. "Though Chris is upset" Chris is a rebel and usually not listening to orders or at least any I give and he only seems to listen to John or his mother Catherine. He likes lone wolfing and not working as a team unless it’s with John.
"Ok... why what making him upset?" I questioned John.
"Well he thinks you’re not doing any of the work and you should carry the work load” John replied "he thinks your banging the women while we are out in the muck and mud"
"Really? I’m totally going to bang potential step sisters and step mother" I replied "also I don’t think it’s smart to get anyone pregnant around here we need every one able to fight if something happens."
"...and he and grace and I have been busy doing logistics and intelligence for all of us so we know what’s coming." Sara spoke from above. I and John looked up to see Sara leaning over the railing looking down at us.
"Well then what does the news say?" I replied
"Well, all news channels are covering the peace talks thing seem to be going well. I think..." just as the words left Sara’s mouth gunfire and explosions coming from the TV behind us.
"There has been a development in today’s Top News here is a man on the ground Amy Lockwood, Amy? (Automatic gunfire Ak47* followed by an explosion) "Run, Run Go gets behind that car" American Solider yells at the camera crew. "Unknown forces have attacked the meetings their killing Soldiers and civilians alike" the news reporter spoke "What’s going on?" Russian solider asked to the American solider. "I have no idea what’s going on" American solider replied "Its chaos down here Anne there are Russian and Americans fighting valiantly against the unknown forces." she speaks again. (RPG fires) "Get down" Russian Solider yells as an explosion cuts off camera feed"
"Amy? AMY?!? We have seem to have lost the feed to are brave team on the ground"
"Son of a bitch" John says under his breath
"Oh no..." Sara says "this isn’t going to be good"
"Sara Get on your computer and find out what’s going on, John go get everyone I’ll get Brett and Tylor meet back here in a bit go" I commanded as I ran out of the room and down the hallway that just moments ago Brett and Tylor went down. Sara got up and ran into the office I heard her talking to grace before I went down the hallway. John ran up the stairs to wake our nigh patrol of Andrew and Aaron. I bumped into Cynthia coming out of her room with her combat gear on.
"What's going on?!" she said angrily as I bumped into her

"go to the living room and wait there C" I said and motioned my apology using my hands "I got to go find Brett and Tylor" Cynthia turned and jogged down the hallway to the living room almost getting run over by John Aaron and Andrew running down the stairs. In no time I got to the observatory where Chris, Brett and Devon were standing and talking Tylor was standing by the window smoking. I ran into the room and said " Get to the Living room now go, go I’ll explain soon just move get you guns leave everything else" I stood at the door Devon grabbed his gun and threw Chris his Brett pushed Chris, Tylor put out his smoke and grabbed his C9 LMG* and ran to me and nodded as he passed me down the hallway. I turned then followed behind him. Everyone was watching the TV in horror Sara ran passed everyone and hugged me. Chris looked back and glared until Brett snapped him back into moving forward.
"What’s happening?" I asked Sara "They kill them the camera crew is dead and they have the camera, they are broadcasting the slaughter" Sara said. I kissed Sara and held her tight for a moment. Then I walked into the room and turned off the TV.
"What now Ryan" Chris smugly asked "Full scale war between three sides, we are near the closest possible nuke site, we are all going to die because of you"
"Really how do you figure?" I spoke in defence
"Ryan, Chris stop." John spoke
"Can’t you see he wants to fight a war we are not a part of" Chris says "He is going to get us all killed"
"You can’t stand not being in charge can you Chris?" I spoke again tauntingly
"Ryan Don't" Grace spoke up "He isn’t worth it"
"I can lead better..." Chris began
"Chris, Ryan does this every day don’t challenge him" Catherine spoke. Chris went to say more but turned around and stared at his mom. "Ryan what should we do" Catherine asked.

Fix the pacing. It feels too rushed. Some dialogue is ok, the rest needs heavy corrections. Mind the grammar, too.

You also need to use spaces more often.

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

People, who RP on NS, usually do RP nations that have significant amount of things to say in international politics, thus, can project power over wide distances. The power projection can be done via variety of means, be it military, political / diplomatic, economic etc. But the more we get into this topic, the more we realize that different powers project this power of theirs in different ways, often based on their geography. This short essay will discuss influence of geography on military strategy on level of national defence policy, or power projection policy.

MAHAN VS MCKINDER

The role that various forms of projection of power will play in your nation's strategy depends on various circumstances; among most common are shape of the terrain, culture, sea access, potential threats, means of economic communication and desired geo - strategic goals. Thus, each nation will project power in different way, and from this distinction we see two types of powers emerging: Ground Powers and Naval Powers. It is possible that in near future, with advent of plane technology sort of "air power" will appear - however this type of power does not exist at this moment, due to problems of technical nature that relate to modern planes, such as for example: range, payload, fuel capacity, attitude limits. Still, however, deeper into future, bigger role will the air transportation play.

Of course, for ages various theorists argued which of those will have advantage:

Ground Power is country that projects majority of it's power through land; usually possesses a huge army, and smaller in size navy and air force, with army per se being primary mean of power projection onto it's neighbors. This type of country usually holds control over vast territorial area; often of size of a small continent. As prime historical and / or modern example one can list Russia, in all it's forms, weather as Tsarist Russia or USSR.

Related concept to development of ground power is theory of "Heartland" by Halford McKinder. While McKinder's theory didn't develop like he predicted it did, it still however holds a lot of truth in it. In short, McKinder proposed that there is sort of "Heart land" or "Axis Mundi" - sort of land that is central spinning axis of the world, and that control over said piece of land would grant hegemony over much wider area to anybody who controls it. To employ this concept in NS RPing, one has to note something; it requires proper geographical set up, a "central continent" on which most of geopolitical attention is focused. Sort of "Heartland" can be found on the map of The Cornellian Empire, with the "Heartland" being area from "Allamunic States" in the north, through "Rome" and "Hostilia" to "New Edom" in the south. Assuming that a single nation laid control to that area, it would greatly increase amount on which it can influence it's neighbors, considering focus of natural resources and lanes of communications in one place, vast territorial, population potential, huge industrial capability, and possibility of blocking straits with ease, which would damage SLOCs (Sea lanes of communication) a lot.

So, how does Ground Power cope with naval warfae? It is easy - the concept practiced by navies of typical land powers is SEA DENIAL. In short, land power can project it's military power through land, and isn't so interested at sea. What will it attempt then? Simple answer is to deny the enemy from using the sea, thus make sea - based attack impossible. That can be achieved in variety of ways; "light naval surface strike forces" composed of corvettes and missile boats, conventional submarines, land based aviation, land based cruise missiles, mine warfare etc. Even though historical Russian ambitions went a bit beyond that, it has to be noted that this type of navy will operate mostly in area below 1000 km from friendly coast, where land based aviation can operate with ease, and within range of land based cruise missiles, within range of small surface ships or where conventional propulsion submarines can lurk within shallow coastal waters, just waiting for chance to strike at unsuspecting enemy. The more advanced and rich in bays, gulfs or islands shoreline is, the better for said navy, considering that they provide additional cover in naval operations, or can harm world economy by being crucial SLOCs that would cause chaos if blocked, thus making war unprofitable.

Naval Power is one with clear idea of power projection through water bodies, often exercising control over vast oceanic areas. Historically this type of power were British Empire or Imperial Japan; one can also count in here USA. Even method of expansion was different; while Russia expanded eastward, devouring less advanced people on it's outer rims, British empire set colonies overseas. Usually, this type of power appears due to traditionally seafaring culture, often located at islands, and placing high emphasis on maritime trade.

One of classical theorists of thinking on this type of power is US admiral, Alfred Thayer Mahan, who besides being father of geopolitics / geostrategy was US Navy admiral. One thing that has to be noted in here is that Mahan had idea of "constant naval expansion", with the naval power expanding it's reach. This is what has to be taken into account; that the power projection capabilities of a navy depend on it's logistics and armaments. The "Blue Water", t.m. navy that can operate on open oceans outside 1000km from shore zone, requires proper logistical support, and even many of modern Blue Water navies can't survive on open oceans only for short period of time. The modern navy faces serious logistical concerns; for example, many missiles can't be reloaded at sea, and supplies such as oil have to be delivered with ships that are prone to enemy's attack. Additionally, presence of "bottle necks" is additional thing to consider; are there narrow waters that can be strategically important?

Related concept is "GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY" in all it's aspects, even when it is a SSGN or carrier that replaces gunboat. With advent of modern guided munitions, a ship located deep on sea can strike far inland into enemy's territory, and carriers can launch aircraft which contribute to power projection capability greatly. Thus, said nations will likely use their naval power as diplomatic tool; either to exercise SEA CONTROL, or to deny enemy use of economic assets coming from sea access. Cutting off oceanic trade, which is important factor to many economies, can ruin them very effectively.

EARTHQUAKE VS TSUNAMI

The times when fleet couldn't fight the ground and vice versa passed long ago; today both can exchange cruise missile salvos. Yet, ships still can't reach every portion of land, neither can ground forces; therefore being important factor in relations between powers. Whatever policy your nation embarks on that, know that you can't control both; and choosing key areas to project your power upon, is step one into becoming great power.
