Being overwhelmed by the lighter, but no less powerful armored vehicles, the insurgents temporarily ceased fire and remained under cover, waiting for the shelling by the government forces to end or at least ease down. However, the fire was not stopping and on the contrary, it even seemed to be growing. Therefore, the insurgents were left to search for other options how to keep up the fight against the government positions and thus, they tried to find ways how to sneak around and possible attack from different sides. However, such option seemed to be impossible at the moment, as the Ocidenian Military was shelling the entire horizon, while the Ocidenian Air Force seemed to be bombarding the entire land right under them. It seemed like the rebels had no good cover spot.

Finally, the mass government shelling toned down as the regular army seemingly ran out of ammo and needed to reload. The firefight was handed over to the foot soldiers that were firing from simpler weaponry, mainly assault rifles, machine guns and bazookas. As the fire toned down, the insurgents now had an opportunity to launch a counter-offensive. The rebel forces soon had a stormed of bullets from rifles and machine guns coming the government way, followed by rocket and grenade launcher fire. Behind the frontal forces, mortar crews prepped their weapons and soon began launching their own shelling wave. Meanwhile, more reinforcements with anti-aircraft guns arrived and opened assault onto the Ocidenian Air Force.

The Ocidenian Military was weary of the stalemate fight and sought to crush the ONLF before the insurgent reinforcements and minor hick-ups among the regular army permit the opposition to move any further with their progress. The massive tanks colons marched forward and opened massive shelling at the enemy positions all at once, advancing forward and firing as a single body of power. The attack was reinforced by lighter armored vehicles that advancing alongside the tanks, while foot soldiers kept up an intense attack from their own position as well, trying to overwhelm the ongoing shelling from the insurgent side.

The opposition forces felt overwhelmed again and pulled back a little, while still continuing fire. The rebels perfectly saw what the government forces were attempting to do and refused to give in to the cheap attempt to push them back. The ONLF was going to fight without stopping.

Battle of Sodalitia

Meanwhile, as the ONLF was attempting to fight through the forces of the regular army, attempting to approach one of the closest government-held cities, other units of the Ocidenian Military were doing exactly the same, except much more successfully as the government forces were carrying out a successful assault onto one of the cities held by the ONLF – Sodalitia. As usual, the Ocidenian Air Force was bombing and carrying out air strikes on all regions surrounding Gaudenia, where the opposition forces were stationed, while the land forces were easily advancing towards the cities, taking out any resistance. The ONLF forces were fighting back, despite their resistance not bringing much benefit.

The ONLF forces were trying to withhold the government assault onto the city and stop the advance by using traditional shelling of all the advancing positions and trying to get the attention of the government troops by engaging them in firefights and sometimes even sneaking up to them as close as possible and attacking them with machetes. Tanks were being attacked with grenade and rocket launchers, while anti-aircraft guns were being used for assault onto the government aircraft.

The Ocidenian soldiers were not an easy target for the rebel fighters to approach as the troops operated strategically as a single fighting force, watching their own targets, while also looking out for their brothers in arms. The rebels were usually pushed back before they could even get close.

There were only rare moments, when some rebel fighters actually managed to get close to the government soldiers and engage them in an up-close fight. Usually all such attempts failed and the insurgents soon understood that it is for the best to just remain in their comfortable, safe spots and attempt to battle the government forces through firefights from there. Although it was a drawn-out process, it was still strategically more effective and valuable than simply diving into a hurricane of bullets.

The ONLF forces were putting themselves in a dangerous position by openly advancing forward and trying to engage the government forces from up-close. This usually made them very visible targets for the Ocidenian Air Force, which usually had the entire battlefield in its radar. The detected enemy units trying to sneak up for a shot from a closer range, were immediately plunged in a series of air strikes and bombings, which made these very same rebel positions shift their concentration from the fight against the government positions on the frontline, to a fight against the Ocidenian Air Force. These assaulted positions were receiving rocket launchers, bazookas and event some anti-aircraft guns from reinforcements, in order to assist them in fighting back the government fighters, bombers and attack helicopters.

The ONLF positions on the very front dropped their assault rifles and machine guns and switched to rocket launchers and bazookas, which they were using for attacks against the Ocidenian Air Force. Some of the insurgents switched to using nearby stationed anti-aircraft guns, provided to them by the reinforcements, and used them for a more powerful assault.

The rebels soon started noticing that such fighting devoted to the enemy from just one side was not effective. Although the rebels were able to quasi-match the attacking force of the government aircraft, that still did not stop the regular army’s advance and attack on the ground, which prompted the frontal rebel forces to think about defense on land as well. Knowing that the best strategy would be to splitting themselves into groups, with some fighting the Ocidenian Air Force, while others would withhold the government ground assault, the frontal insurgent forces requested that mortar crews keep the regular army busy with intense shelling, while the division process could be carried out.

The mortar crews did as they were requested and soon began an even more active and intense shelling of the advancing government positions, especially targeting tanks. The shelling was reinforced by troops that were delivering bazooka and rocket launcher attacks.

Once their request was carried out, the frontal opposition forces successfully carried out the planned division process and split themselves up into two teams, with some focusing on the fight against the government land forces, while others would focus on the air forces. The group that was countering the Ocidenian land forces, was firing at the government troops with assault rifles and machine guns, while the tanks and other armored vehicles were being attacked using grenade launchers and rocket launchers. Meanwhile, the group fighting the Ocidenian Air Force was firing at the government aircraft with rocket launchers, bazookas and anti-aircraft guns. Both groups were being reinforced by the ONLF foot soldiers, mortar crews and groups operating other anti-aircraft guns.

Seeing that the opposition forces were not just cleverly and strategically withholding their attacks, but launching their own assault and counter-offensive, the land forces and the Ocidenian Air Force agreed to bilaterally cooperate as well – providing each other with cover fire, sometimes switching targets, or using distraction techniques.

Battle of Gaudenia

The OPLF in the south were not getting it any easier, that their counterparts in the north. The Ocidenian Military was launching an assault onto the OPLF-held city in the southeast of the country – Gaudenia. As usual, the attack consisted of ground and aerial assault, while the insurgents were holding up against the two-way attack only on land.

The Ocidenian Air Force was bombing and launching air strikes on all rebel positions stationed around Gaudenia to cleanse the path before a ground assault onto the city itself. The fighters, bombers and attack helicopters were not facing a lot of problems in this objective, although, the OPLF forces were actively resisting the attack by firing at all government aircraft passing by.

Despite being actively bombed and thus being forced to take cover to avoid fatalities, the OPLF knew that only hiding and not resisting would not bring any benefit as it would give the government forces easy access into Gaudenia and thus result with the insurgents losing the battle. Therefore, the opposition forces were stationing themselves around the city in open light, while arming their positions with heavy weaponry. The rebels made sure that their forces obtained a lot of anti-aircraft weaponry as well, as they knew that their open presence would make them vulnerable and easy target for the Ocidenian Air Force.

Once the rebel positions spotted the regular army advancing forward and heading towards Gaudenia, the OPLF did not wait for the government forces to attack first and immediately opened fire, hoping to wipe out as many enemy forces as possible, before they could get close to the city. The insurgents were shelling the distant positions of the Ocidenian Military with mortars, while foot soldiers fired assault rifles, machine guns, bazookas, rocket launchers, grenade launchers and other weapons. The Ocidenian Military retaliated immediately.

Upon seeing the insurgent shells coming their way, the Ocidenian soldiers took cover, while tanks launched a wave of fire at the opposition forces. This attack was supported by lighter armored vehicles that fired both mount weaponry, while also having soldiers located inside the vehicles, fired additional shots from the weapons they had in their hands. While taking cover, the soldiers on foot found comfortable spots to take cover and shoot from and soon joined the firefight.

Not only was the regular army able to withstand the attack, but it was also potentially preparing a counter-offensive against the rebel positions. However, before such a tactic could be prepared and carried out, the troops required concentration and focus – something that could not be achieved do to the soldiers being forced to focus all their attention on holding up against the incoming insurgent attacks. Although the tanks, lighter armored vehicles and their shelling were serving as an effective counter force against the ongoing rebel attacks, it was still not enough to help the regular army shift their attention to forming a counter-offensive and feeling safe from incoming attacks. Therefore, the local commanders requested that the Ocidenian Air Force intensify air strikes and bombings of the rebel ground positions and temporarily take the battle over into their hands, so that the land forces could form an effective counter-offensive.

As the Ocidenian Air Force intensified their attacks against the rebel forces in large quantities, the OPLF immediately shifted half of its attack capacity to fighting off the threat coming from the sky. As usual, the rebels generally used anti-aircraft guns to fight off the government fighters, bombers and attack jets, while foot soldiers were constantly shifting their position and firing from rocket launchers and bazookas, while being in different spots.

The Ocidenian Air Force had the battle under their control for a short time, before the jets and helicopters had finally started to feel overwhelmed and requested that the land forces take the fight back into their hands, while the aerial units only remain in a reinforcement position. The ground forces felt that they were now ready to do so.

The tank colons and armored vehicles now advanced forward again with all machines opening a wave of fire at once, while the jets above reinforced them with missiles, bombs and napalm. The Ocidenian soldiers bravely marched forward as well, with the troops firing at all visible rebel fighters.

With a government onslaught erupting, the insurgents felt overwhelmed and knew that a single open moment of weakness would give the regular army an impression that it had a potential to take Gaudenia. The insurgent commanders ordered all opposition forces to march forward as well and collide with the government forces as powerful counter-force.

The two armies were openly engaging each other in an up-close combat. This was probably the closest direct encounter that the government and opposition forces had so far as in other battle zones, the Ocidenian Military and the rebels tried staying away from each other, only trying to fight through a method of firefights. The current fight consisted of general firefights as well, except this time the troops on both sides had a much better firing range at each other and even multiple chances to engage in actual had combat.
