Since the insurgents did not possess either land or air vehicles like the government forces, the insurgents mostly just acted as fearless extremists. The insurgent often split into battalions armed with grenade launchers and rocket launchers and each would surround a single tank from all sides and fire at it at once, while other forces would attempt to cover them in the assault on the regular army’s land vehicles. Such assaults were rarely successful, but the rebels did manage to take out a decent number of government tanks and land vehicles, prompting the Ocidenian troops operating them, to fight on their own. Nevertheless, the Ocidenian Military did not feel much damage among their heavy artillery.

The Ocidenian Air Force now had to be more cautious in their role in the current battle. Now that the two armies were no longer occupying different parts of the battlefield and fighting each other from the distance, the targets were no longer so clearly to spot as the regular army and the rebels had mixed into a single mass. The bombers could step into battle only on rare occasions, while the fighters and attack helicopters handled most of the aerial support to the forces on the ground.

Despite not facing a lot of casualties among the tank colons, the Ocidenian troops were not willing to take the risk and permit the insurgents to openly attack the vehicles. Those groups that were attempting to surround the tanks were immediately being attacked by soldier battalions from all sides as well. Meanwhile, the mortar crews that were providing cover shelling against the tanks were being attacked as well.

Battle of Sanita

The ONLF forces were now prepping an assault onto another government-held city in the north east of central Ocidenia – Sanita. As the rebel land forces were approaching the city, they spotted the closest stationed government forces that were preparing for Sanita’s defense. The insurgent had begun mortar shelling from the distance, while foot soldiers opened fire from rocket launchers, grenade launchers, bazookas and shoulder missiles. The Ocidenian Military retaliated by having the Ocidenian Air Force launch air strikes and carry out bombings of the advancing opposition forces, while the ground forces were preparing for a counter-offensive.

As soon as the fighters, bombers and attack helicopters struck the insurgent ground forces from the sky, the ONLF forces immediately jumped to cover and started launching anti-aircraft fire from the special guns, rocket launchers and shoulder missiles. The jets and helicopters were spinning around the sky in circles and firing missiles, dropping bombs and napalm as often as possible, usually during the most comfortable opportunities.

Tanks once again held the front and fired shells endlessly, while armored vehicles supported them with fire from mounted weaponry and guns held by the soldiers inside the vehicles. Soldiers on their feet were taking cover in different spots around the battlefield, engaging the rebels in firefights.

The ONLF insurgents retaliated by launching their own fire, trying to outdo the enemy forces by adding more destruction with mortar shelling. The rebels often tried advancing forward and getting as close to the government forces as possible, despite the fact that infiltrating the enemy-held side of the battlefield was dangerous, as the insurgents were practically diving into a hurricane of bullets.

The tank colons and light armored vehicles had the priority not to allow the rebel fighters get close. Although these efforts often paid off as these war machines were producing highly destructive fire that was blowing the rebel masses away, the insurgents were still not an easy target to take down as they were attacking with human wave attacks.

Seeing that the tanks and other land vehicles could not hold the entire fight on their own, the soldier battalions knew that they had to take the initiative into their own hands. The troops transitioned their actions outside simple firefights to actual active assaults against the opposition forces.

Although these were rare occasions, the human wave attacks that the rebels were carrying out, eventually lead to certain benefits. Being able to infiltrate the enemy side of the battlefield and approach the Ocidenian forces from up-close, the opposition forces managed to use these occasions to attack the tanks and armored vehicles from a close range, while the government soldiers faced assaults from close rifle fire and the usage of machetes.

The professional government troops usually won the first fights against the rebels and managed to disarm the fighters on the spot, thus making the insurgents come to a conclusion that a close range fight with the Ocidenian soldiers, although tempting and made it seem like it is a faster method to achieve victory, was not a strategically clever move, as the insurgents were putting themselves out there for an easy kill. Therefore, the insurgents often thought about different ways how to approach the enemy.

The Ocidenian soldiers saw that tanks often required defense, as the rebels kept using the strategy of attacking a single vehicles in huge numbers with powerful weapons, mostly grenade launchers. The troop battalions focused a lot of their fire on fighting off the groups carrying out these specific assaults.

Although the Ocidenian ground forces were genuinely decently controlling the situation on land, the fighters, bombers and attack helicopters attempted to assist the army as often as possible and provided frequent continuous attacks on the advancing rebels. Nevertheless, the Ocidenian Air Force had other problems to deal with it, as the insurgent anti-aircraft guns crews were still actively attacking the government aircraft.

As the soldier battalions helped out more and more tanks by fighting off the attacker crews, the tank colons could once again slowly return to active advance and resume the shelling of all rebel positions, both the advancing and withdrawing ones. As the tanks colons were once again an active counter force, the lighter armored vehicles could resume the advance as well, while the soldiers could follow them and thus safely progress across the battlefield too.

The bomber jets carried out several bombing runs of ONLF-held part of the battlefield by dropping a rain of bombs and napalm. The fighter jets reinforced the power of these bombings with their own wave of air strikes.

Seeing how greatly the Ocidenian Air Force was handling the situation, the regular army considered using the opportunity to advance further as soon as possible, while the rebel positions were still genuinely overwhelmed.

Battle of Culmenos

Seeing how their assault on Sanita was currently not going very well, the ONLF expected that they would hopefully have more success in the occupation of Culmenos, a government-held city in the very north center of central Ocidenia. However, the government forces were defending this city just as intensely, proving that the regular army was indeed prepared to withstand a possible attack on any of the cities.

Before advancing any further, the ONLF hoped to shell their way through with mortars. The opposition forces were firing at the government positions from the distance, hoping to carry out as many effective attacks against the enemy as possible, before moving in for the attack. However, the Ocidenian Air Force soon entered the scene, once again making the rebel effort more difficult.

The ONLF forces could openly see what the Ocidenian Military was planning to do and thus they did not want to give in to the manipulation of the government forces. The opposition units knew that the regular army was trying to disrupt their attacks by forcing the rebels to shift all their focus to self-defense, thus the insurgents sought to quickly form a tactic that would help them both fight off the government aerial assault and keep up their own ongoing ground attack.

The opposition forces divided themselves up into groups carrying out different activities. One half was resuming the mortar shelling of the distant government forces, while the other operated anti-aircraft guns that were used to battle the Ocidenian Air Force from land. The opposition forces felt like they were genuinely holding up pretty good.

The Ocidenian Military sought to immediately put the rebels in their place, before they could resume their advance towards Culmenos. Despite the rebel shelling still continuing, the tanks colons and lines of other land vehicles bravely advance forward and opened their own fire at the distant targets, while the soldiers followed up by putting their own arsenal of weapons into use.

The regular army sought to destroy the anti-aircraft weapons, as they saw that the Ocidenian Air Force was facing trouble, because of this rebel weaponry. The soldier battalions tried getting closer to the crews operating these weapons, in order to get a better shot at the guns, however, the advance across the battlefield on foot was made especially difficult, because of the ongoing shell attacks by the mortar crews.

As the fighter and bomber jets were doing the basic fighting against the insurgent forces on the ground, the several present attack helicopters tried using this distraction maneuver to carry out several successful fire attack runs across the rebel portion of the battlefield, however, active cover from the ground was required to successfully achieve this goal. With active cooperation with the forces on land, several such successful runs were carried out.

The opposition forces knew that engaging the government units in firefights, hoping to overpower them, would not bring much progress for the rebel side any time soon. Therefore, the insurgents often tended to simply take the risk and run right at the enemy position, firing magazines after magazines, shell after shell. Knowing that numbers of single soldiers would not be able to achieve this, the insurgents usually carried this out in their traditional strategic human wave attacks.

The soldier battalions knew that it was not in their power to fight off these oncoming waves of rebel soldiers all at once, thus prompting the tank colons to blow away as much of them as possible, while the troops tried to handle the remaining numbers. Bomber jets were also often requested to contribute to the limitation of rebel numbers by dropping some bombs and napalm right onto these advancing rebels.
