For future reference Ralk, this is a Task Force Atlas OOC thread. This is not the place to come and challenge other people to war with statements that are borderline bait.

Hey, guys. I was an unproductive shitlord and slept all day. Fuck me, right?

There was also something I needed to say, but... Sod it all, I can't remember... Let's get some responses here...

Vacif wrote:Don't threads cap at like page 500?

Yes, which is why it's disconcerting when I sleep for a day and see we've burned three pages on non-Task Force Atlas things. Granted, it's my fault. Not like the cap matters. We hit 500 and we just go to a fourth OOC thread.

Sorry to revisit the question from a couple of pages ago (I've been busy), but 'wankish' is strong, and implies that there is something actually wrong with my understanding of the technology, or that I've used it in a manner contrary to physics or to good RP-conduct. Would you be able to highlight how, exactly, so that I can adjust?

Or is it that my stuff is effective enough that it alters the combat paradigm, and that makes you uncomfortable? Which is a reasonable concern, but not 'wankish', per se, if so.

I doubt Ark is making a strike against you, so much as he's making a strike against some who use your wares. While nothing you have is Landkruezer-level wank-factor, we both know that since some of your items are well-known for being cutting-edge and effective, some people tend to misuse them in their RPs. The items from the storefront aren't the issue, it's the people who use them incorrectly.

Though I could also be stuffing words into Ark's mouth, since that's more my opinion than anything.

a very well put point. I suppose I make the assumption that people are considering a properly integrated combat doctrine in the employment of technology (its why I make the design choices I do), and I suppose that is perhaps a little naive of me. Food for thought...

Basically what I see tending to happen is people having full forces solely composed of Lyran or other storefront super weapons. It's like having an infantry force of only Halo Spartans in the same numbers as a conventional force, and it's cringe worthy. I mean, if storefronts starting doing RP quality background checks, there'd suddenly be a lot of people short on superweapons they use like disposable income.

Similar situation when it comes to SF units in NS. Every nation and their mother seems to have an SF unit of supposed capabilities which puts TF Atlas to shame. Of course people seem to usually misuse their SF assets on the conventional battlefield on a regular basis, so whatever, their loss.

Lyran weapons are designed to cater to the full range of combat niches. There actually are very few 'superweapons', per se. Trying to field an entire army of 98.5ton assault tanks is silly (and doesn't employ assault tanks well), as is a navy of Longswords, or an airforce composed solely of Dragonhawk nuclear-engined bombers. Sure, you can spend your entire NS-budget in that fashion. But your total force effectiveness will decline. These are, generally, specialised pieces of kit.
An LY4A2 Wolfhound MBT? That's... a good main battle tank. Have as many as you would normally field tanks. Expect them to do better than most tanks, in that role. But they aren't going to win a war for you on their own, especially if someone insists on fielding them driving meters apart, wall-to-wall, assuming the enemy doesn't have countermeasures.
An LY21 is a perfectly reasonable standard-issue infantry rifle. I'd have much preferred an LY21 to the AUG I used when I wore green, back in the day. But it's not going to make your soldiers uber-leet on its own.

The whole system is supposed to work proportionally and synergistically. But, again, that might be assuming too much of people's grasp of the intricacies of modern warfare which, to be fair, most people have not experienced as a profession.

It doesn't even take real-life experience in a military to understand logistics, strategy, or synergy in at least a very rudimentary sense. The main issue is that it's just something I doubt you can avoid. It's not like you can decide whether or not the nation buying a fleet of Longswords could potentially be able to without destroying their economic stability. And it's not your fault if some little gnat thinks it's a good idea to spam Wolfhounds with nothing else. You're just a seller. You can't be blamed for the buyer's mistakes.

Though I see where your reasoning is. It's possible you've... overestimated the capabilities of some RP'ers. And really, that's how RPs are decided, not on their tech, but on the actual person's capabilities and knowledge of what they have and what they can do. A perfectly-outfitted army with perfect proportions of Lyran Arms equipment could be beaten by a ragtag militia if the RP of the Lyran Arms force isn't a capable RP'er and the controller of the militia is a seasoned NS veteran.

But again, it's not like you can decide who you're selling to is capable.... But now I'm going to need to look over those Wolfhounds and see if I should be replacing my Raitz...

But, again, that might be assuming too much of people's grasp of the intricacies of modern warfare which, to be fair, most people have not experienced as a profession.Last edited by Lyras

Well, considering that Riysan SEAD killed ~ 70 Lyran skyguards in one post, I would say that Lyran gear is far from undefeatable. Actually many Lyran designs are very solid. But Lyras is a man - and everything is good as long as somebody won' t come up with countermeasure.

People should start searching for ways to counter not just shout ;).

A man once fus ro dah'd a Longsword. Not saying it did much, but he did.

Just like the guy in Tiananmen, he Fus Ro Dah'd a tank. Same effect.

To be honest, I never really notice any of Lyras hardware. No offense, but it is mostly because I like to use real-life military hardware but at the same time I just don't really have high interest on using NS military hardware despite having probably few stuffs, Halcyon being the most recent.

I've recently been thinking of transferring from self-made and IRL stuff to Lyran Arms, Halcyon, and Wolf Armaments stuff.

Why? Any reasons?
