For example, we have Boeing flying laser cannon YAL-1, first flight 2002 ; improved version of Laser Weapon System was installed on USS Ponce for at-sea testing in the Persian Gulf, summer 2014 (acouple months ago). The British's Minister of Defense unveiled its plans for modernizing its military in 2009 which included this say "more cost-effective means of achieving the effects currently provided by manned aircraft and cruise missiles by using new concepts in [UAVs and] unmanned combat air vehicles, involves bringing a new generation of unmanned vehicles, advanced sensors and energy weapons to the battlefield". Given the tension in the world today, major nations are speeding up their weapon developments from China super sonic submarine, Russia advanced plasma stealth, British Invisible camouflage, to American direct energy weapons. How long will it be until the first laser rifle be made? It could be big and cumbersome with long reload time between shoot but I think we will see one in about 2020 - 2025. Just my thinking. For Future Tech, it should be stuff like shield, FTL engine, massive space ships....

This is PMT, not FT. Massive difference. And, even if a laser was viable in 2024, I'd still take projectile weapons over a really shitty laser gun that has a horrible rate of fire and probably not much stopping power. But that's irrelevant anyways.

We could easily see a laser rifle today. Easily. However, the biggest problems I can see with it would be throughput. A laser beam heats the air around it. That heat causes distortions, which cause the laser beam to decohere. If that happens, it becomes unable to do any real damage. It's the same reason I criticize people for using orbital superlasers to bombard worlds; you would boil off the atmosphere, layer by layer. A laser, depending on its size, will also consume a great deal of energy and generate a great deal of heat; if you sustain fire long enough with insufficient cooling systems, components could melt or it could injure or kill its wielder.
A laser also wouldn't need reloading aside from the power source and potentially the lasing medium if it somehow becomes worn out.

Well as I get much advise from you guys against the personnal laser rifle, I changed my old post and will use ballistic from now on. But as other nations and I begin to move in and get our gifts from the departed Betazoid player, we should be able to have some limited FT. Just so we can at least have a chance in the fight against gigantic space beasts and possible orbital bombardment from the enemy.

I think you're overblowing the technology gap a bit. While the aliens (Kiwis and I) are greatly more advanced than Earth, we are not omnipotent. Far from it. And, to boot, I'm on mankinds side, so there's no real need to lessen the tech gap.
