Christmas eve, 2222.
Welcome to Takahiro system. A client state of the Commonwealth, Takahiro is small, but immensely rich. Its nearer, rocky planet, Takahiro Prime, abounds with fuels and luxury resources, and is populated by a tiny and highly exclusive cadre of traders who make a killing selling off the natural resources to passing tourists. The system asteroid belt is practically packed with gold-bearing rocks, making it perfect real-estate for those prospectors who can afford to buy their way inside the insanely expensive and excellent 'electromagnetic fence', a system-wide network of mass drivers arranged by the Takahiran colonists.
Word has reached the Home Office, however, that the bounties of Takahiro Prime and the asteroid belt may not be all that the system can give. Takahiro II, the further, gaseous planet, is now open for trade, and a zero-width connector has been opened to its core – and a long suspicion has been proven. The pressures inherent in the gas giant have compressed all the spare carbon it has ever captured into a shell around the core, and in the end the core has become, for the most part, diamond.
In layman's terms, the core of Takahiro II is the largest diamond known to man. A one-billionth part of its mass would make the miner richer than he could ever want to be. Taken as a whole, and sold off in infinitesimal pieces as diamonds usually are, it could keep a government running for millennia.
Unknown to the Commonwealth, a group of its highest officers have leaked the news of its discovery to selected national intelligence agencies and mercenary groups. Their reasoning is not known, but what is known is that there is now a race on for what is, quite literally, enough money to buy the world.

The Fourteenth Taskforce of the Commonwealth Navy: three grand cruisers (around battleship equivalent), twenty-five heavy cruisers, sixty light cruisers, and three hundred and fifty point defenders, plus a few Owls – specialty frigates, devoted to information warfare and such things; TF14 is backed up by the Electromagnetic Fence mentioned in the blurb, although 14 proper will probably have to do most of the heavy lifting.
