Office of Édouard (Edward) Ganstrom. Urbs Scientiae, Geneva Fallout City, Jura Mountains, France: August 22, 2415. 3:20 pm.
Edward Ganstrom sat at his table in his office, reading off the data from the weather sensors on the surface, and smiled.
It's over. The nuclear winter is over! he thought. It's time.
"What's going on?" Anna asked another student in the Urbs Scientiae as they walked toward the Manufacture Assembly Chamber in the science complex. All the high-achievers in the city's high schools were being called there by the chief of the Urbs Scientiae, Edward Ganstrom.
"I dunno," the boy said to Anna, looking flattered by her choosing him to be asked a question.
"Thank you, Jürgen," Anna said with forced grace. It was just a question. Why'd he have to get all infatuated over that?
She approached the large airlocked door to the Urbs Scientiae and waited, wondering if her father would be there to greet her, as he always was. The other students all stopped in a big cluster around her.
The door hissed and popped, then opened. Out stepped a tall, thin, dark-haired man. It was Edward Ganstrom. He wore a bulky-looking suit with full body coverage, save his head.
"Come in, come in," he said briskly. "Our future cannot wait."
Confused, Anna entered after him. She'd known from her father that Ganstrom was the only man in the city who resisted staying underground forever vocally. Was he talking about that now?
They went down a long corridor after him. The halls were rather deserted and quiet, save occasional loud noises. At the end was a large chamber with some chairs and people working in the background on some big vehicle. Anna saw her father among them. Near the chairs were racks on which more bulky suits hung.
"As I have already told you, we must know whether or not we are the last people on this planet. And then, more importantly, we must leave this world and settle the stars- escape from Earth.
The first step," he continued, "is in front of you. These suits will protect us from any radiation outside the city. We'll be heading to Old Geneva to a radio tower. I intend to send out my plans and intentions to the world."
The students, respectful as ever, were silent.
"So everyone, get the suits on and head to the door Outside. I'll be there."
Edward walked ahead of them down the corridor to the door Outside, as they called the world beyond Geneva, on the opposite side of the city.
After wrestling themselves into their suits, the students joined him six minutes later, helmets sealed over their heads. Edward nodded and put on his helmet, which had been cradled in his arm up to this point.
"Turn on your dimmers to prevent snow blindness," he told them, "and let's go."
He then hit the door release button, and it hissed open. Beyond the door was another, dimly lit corridor, at whose end lay the final door.
Anna followed Edward, and the students followed her, to the door. Edward used what looked like an odd set of handles to turn the door open.
It opened into a snow-covered, forested land sloping down southward toward the ruins of the city.
It was going to be a long, long hike.
Edward waited for the students to come out of the tunnel, and closed the door behind them.
"Let's go," he said.
