Belisarium Herald,
Manius Papirius
The Master of Soldiers, Count Rufinus Arcadius, today announced that the Divine Augustus had ordered him to raise the defense condition of the imperial armed forces to a slightly higher readiness level, meaning that leaves are cancelled, recent retirees may be called up from the reserves, and soldiers awaiting discharged may be "stop-lossed." Roughly three marine legions are now being mobilized, along with the First Fleet, in preparation for what have been only labeled, "exercises," by the Magister Militum, implying war games, but possibly something else as well. In addition, six penal cohorts have been deployed and apparently issued arms, which might well suggest a distinct probability of expected action.
In unrelated news, the Senate has tabled a proposal by an elderly senator named Antonius Metellus to raise a "joint-pacification force for Gloria Regis, composing of the responsible powers of the Cornellian Empire, notably this Empire, plus the Imperium, and New Edom, of course, to forcibly depose from office the fraudulent and tyrannical government of Gloria Regis, which violated its word of honor to respect the constitutional institutions of Gloria Regis and leave them intact, as a precondition of recognition by this Empire. We should force them to hold free and fair elections again, so as to have a chance to decide whether or not to return to office a party that has disenfranchised nearly half of the populace against its own solemn oath to respect their rights and dignity as men."
The vote to table the measure was 168-132.
The Senate did, however, accept a proposal to condemn and censure the government of Gloria Regis for "breach of good faith with the nations which recognized it and the people of their own island, half of whom now groan under the tyranny and oppression of the female majority. This sort of thing speaks poorly of democracy, socialism, feminism, and the other progressive ideals touted during Gloria Regis's revolt. Now we know why they wanted only their political militia in charge of the police, so as to oppress, abuse, and tyrannize the men of their own island."
This measure was carried by 287-13.
Neither resolution was binding or had the weight of law, as only the Emperor can enact proper legislation through imperial edicts. These measures, however, do reflect the sentiments of the Senate and thus of the People, indicating that for our fellow Romans, Gloria Regis is synonymous with gynocratic despotism and the overthrow of good social order. That ethnic Cornellians and many Christians now endure such injustices and inequity makes them even more repugnant to the Roman mind.
To quote the Grand Chamberlain, Jovinus, "This sort of thing is exactly why we have a ban on female accession under the Edict of Belisarium."

International NewsGloria Regis Defended
Enlightened Matriarchy Maintains Commitments Amid Patriarchal Outcry
Imperial City - The Shrailleeni government has re-affirmed its commitment to the defense of Gloria Regis amid recent political attacks launched by the Late Roman Empire, and public outcry emanating from United Valik. In the Late Roman Empire, a measure introduced to launch an invasion of the recently independent islands was tabled, but not defeated, by a close margin in the Roman senate. Instead, an overwhelming measure was passed to condemn and censure Gloria Regis for "the tyranny and oppression of the female majority." In United Valik, demonstrations took place against Gloria Regis which included public outcry from former supporters of Gloria Regian independence against the current policies of that government.
Both nations used anti-matriarchy rhetoric in their denunciations, a clear indication of their skewed moralist argumentation in what is clearly a continuation of Roman and Valikian cultural attacks against matriarchal and matrilocal cultures. In Rome, a nation which cannot enact legislation without the authority of its patriarchal Emperor, the Grand Chamberlain emphasized the nation's ban on female accession as a key component of its grievances against matriarchal systems. Apparently unhappy with the results of the last Gloria Regian election, in which men were quite eligible to vote, Rome called for another that would hopefully mirror its own patriarchal views. The sudden increase in readiness of the Roman armed forces was assured to be "unrelated news."
United Valik, a nation more egalitarian than Rome and yet deeply patriarchal in its religion and roots, called for "free elections, equal rights for men, and the dissolution of political police in Gloria Regis." Paulina Adams of the People's Party, formerly a supporter of Gloria Regian independence, called the current government there a "betrayal," and equated to "fascist tyranny in the name of feminism." A priest in that nation launched rhetoric against what he called the "profoundly malicious and oppressive cult of Woman as Goddess." (You have read this translation correctly, Shrailleeni readers.) Even the paper itself issued a challenge, telling the matriarchies of Cornellia that "it is the beginning of the end."
Exactly how the free elections held in Gloria Regis following its independence and the formation of its national, non-political police force headed by Julianna Aspen have upset its detractors in United Valik would be mysterious if anti-matriachal sentiment were not so obviously behind it. Time and again United Valik has risen in protest against matriarchal cultures and governments, with never a word spoken (except in approval) of regional patriarchal cultures and governments. Their clear moral blindness in the issue of gender equality would be sickening if it were not so utterly predictable in this regard. What is clear is that Gloria Regis, a democratic society which enjoys many freedoms, is not the true target of these attacks. Rather, they are directed at all feminists and matriarchies broadly, including the Empire of Shrailleen, and should be considered as such.
Matriarch of State Aryni Resyanna fe Shrailleen was asked to give a statement regarding the recent announcement from Rome and United Valik, and had this to say:
"The Shrailleeni Empire values its friendship with both the Late Roman Empire and United Valik, and hopes to increase its friendly economic cooperation with both of these nations. The Empire also re-affirms its friendship with the Commonwealth of Gloria Regis as it continues to decide upon the future of its people, and its support for the democratic process. Gloria Regis is a key symbol of what democracy could look like within Shrailleen, and an example to be considered. We shall continue to uphold all of our commitments to Gloria Regis, include that toward its safety and defense. I can only hope that governing elements within the Late Roman Empire and United Valik will continue to promote the cross-cultural dialogue and religious toleration that have marked Shrailleen's interactions with them."
New Edom wrote:Elizabeth Salt remarked, "It's amazing, isn't it, you rarely see modern troops that wear their 19th century uniforms and gear so well--they must drill all the time. Is this a guards outfit?"
Sif said to her, "This is a modern Shrailleeni Empire military parade. Like as in this is what they wear, this is what they use. This is it."

Jan 16, 2015Protests Against Gloria Regis Test Loyalty to the King
by Annabelle Barca
HERACLEA, Gloria Regis-- Legislation passed by the majority Feminist Collective Party of Gloria Regis has establsiihed a new constitution that has citizens of New Edom and the newly independent former province hopping mad.
The Government of Gloria Regis held votes on whether or not to remain a symbolic dependency but a 68% majority agreed to end all formal legal ties with the New Edomite monarchy though there were movements to keep the ties, in particular a suggestion by Livia Barberina, now styled Protector of Gloria Regis, that Queen Mara I be recognized as sovereign and symbolic head of state. Theodora Ferrovius, the Minister of Justice, had said "I think that's a terrible symbol--no offense to Queen Mara, she's a kind hearted compassionate person devoted to charitable good works, but she's also a young woman who got married by pressure to a man she probably doesn't love personally for reasons of state. hardly a great feminist example. I feel it is a symbol of the real status of women in so called egalitarian New edom, and I wish she and other women were free of it. I would welcome Queen Mara as symbolic head of state if she came here and abdicated as queen of New Edom. But I'd be even happier if she abdicated and came here or went to another matriarchal or feminist nation to go to school and be a botanist as she always dreamed."
However Ferrovius and her followers were adamant about the new constitution, even finding support from moderate Deputy Protector Dr. Servilia Aemilianus.
The new constitution in the name of balancing past wrongs against women and steering society away from "Patriarchy" has made only women eligible to serve in the National Assembly of Gloria Regis or to serve as head of state or in teh council of ministers, there called the Council of Guardians.
Outrage from more liberal members of the Feminist Collective, outrage from foreign supporters in Rome and United vAlik, outrage from non feminist leaders in the population have spilled into more outrage in New Edom itself.
"What a big surprise," said Sarah Carmel, leader of the Free Congress. "I warned everyone this would happen. They betrayed their promises. This is a plot by fanatical matriarchalists and communists who want to strike blows at our righteous society."
Dr. Marius Campion, the National Wisdom party leader, said, "And so it comes; the one party state in the name fo liberty. It will end badly. We must put pressure on Gloria Regis to reconsider their position."
Protests on behalf of the citizens of Gloria Regis have grown in number, though thus far they are not respectful but insistent that New Edom should at least put embargoes and official condemn the constitution of Gloria Regis. The King's Master of Offices, Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain, told press that the Council of Ministers would be meeting with key committee members of the Chamber of deputies to provide advice on policy concerning Gloria Regis' constitution.
"We must not just react emotionally about this. We are observing human rights issues in Gloria Regis, we are deeply cocnerned for the citizens who live there who are not feminists and have rights as well recognized under international law and we will dealw ith this matter--but wisely and carefully. Violating another nation's sovereignty cannot be done without there being such grave provocation that civilized practice is not possible."

Ambassador to Gloria Regis Felix Navarro has resigned, denouncing the government there, saying, "I wanted to work with them. I wanted to believe that they were truly about a pluralistic, democratic society. Now, it is clear that they are totalitarian Marxists and Redstocking Feminists bent on a communistic matriarchy. I swear, they would have been better off under continued martial-law, still under Edomite rule. The people there had more freedom then than they do now. The Free Congress, National Wisdom, and Intellectual parties warned us, but we didn't listen to their warnings.
"Now, an entire island is enslaved by one-party rule and half the population is denied the franchise. This new government, this Socialist cabinet of Premier Castillo, doesn't want me talking openly about it, and that is why I resigned. They agree with me, but they can't say it publicly. I can. The King agrees with me, too. I call for new elections or else the reversal of international recognition of Gloria Regis, an embargo, and the severing of all diplomatic relations with that detestable regime of liars, malcontents, and tyrants, who crush all dissidents under their Fascist jackboots. We should freeze any Glorian financial holdings, too. Cut them off from any further money than they have already seized from unfortunate men who have fled their police state!"
When asked about Ashab, Navarro declined to comment, but he had sharp words for Deadora and Jedoria over Krutongo, "Leave Krutongo alone. Don't become the aggressor. Do not attack people simply because they believe in their god and their government. The Imperium has done you no harm. Do no harm to them."
When asked about the Palisades, Navarro agreed with the proposed investigation, but also echoed the Ghantish Prime Minister's words, "We should not rush to judgments about Arcologia. None of us are there. This is why we should investigate. Give everyone their day in court, so to speak. The Imperium and Adiron both have the right to defend their national interests and sovereignty. We should not assume that either is to blame."
When asked about the Shrailleeni, Navarro shrugged, "I disagree with them about Gloria Regis, but they have done a good job of working for peace and human decency, the relief of suffering and misery. They are a stand-up people."
Update: Former President Carlita Ruiz has been named Ambassador to Gloria Regis in Navarro's stead by His Catholic Majesty's Government.

Breaking News-
The Divine Augustus has just issued the Edict of Special Sanctions, in which he decreed the imposition of economic sanctions against Gloria Regis, consisting largely of 5% higher tariffs on all Gloria Regian exports, a ban on travel to the island by all unauthorized citizens, an embargo on all feminist literature originating on the island, full asylum for all Gloria Regian refugees fleeing "economic, religious, or political persecution by the false and treacherous government of Gloria Regis," a ban on any bank transfers of funds or assets belonging to Gloria Regians to the government there, the freezing of any assets in the Empire held by members of the government of Gloria Regis, a ban on the sale of any armaments to the government of Gloria Regis, a removal of all non-essential diplomatic personnel from Sixington back to Constantinople, and the indefinite postponement of the appointment of any new Legates to either Sixington or Iphigenia.
In the words of Count Servius Ahenobarbus, Master of Offices, "We do not appreciate having someone lie to us and dishonorably obtain diplomatic recognition on a fraudulent basis. While we respect our Shrailleeni allies, we believe that they are looking at this matter through rosy spectacles. The fact remains that, however they might dislike that the message comes from a patriarchal state such as us, the messenger's nature is immaterial to the validity of the message itself. Besides, the Federation of Allamunnic States has similar objections, and they are no patriarchy, are they?"

Glauconeum Chronicle,
Stefania Brzezinski
Prime Minister Stanislav Lubinski today invoked Article VI of the Gloria Regis Independence and Freedom Act of 2015, which authorizes the Executive to suspend diplomatic relations with Gloria Regis in the event of its government proving false and tyrannical, as well as the imposition of economic sanctions and a travel ban to said island nation. Citing "duplicity, injustice, tyranny, oppression, and a breach of faith with the male electors who helped elect the present government there," Lubinski noted that, "the Romans, Edomites, Garzans, and Allamunnae are correct. Gloria Regis's current leaders gained power by deceiving both their own people and foreign nations as to their intentions and plans for governing the country. They lied to us, they lied to others, they lied to their own electorate, and they lied to the world. Such treachery can only be described as evil."
Even People's Party chair Paulina Adamski, who once supported Gloria Regis's recognition and was instrumental in pushing through the Act, agreed with the Prime Minister, "The power of the masses must include all of the masses, regardless of sex. The sovereignty of the working class is not divided or unequal based upon sex or race. The international community of workers is neither a fraternity nor a sorority. Feminism that pushes for equality is good. Feminism that preaches gender supremacy is simply a mirror image of the evils of patriarchy. It is morally no better than the patriarchs that it seeks to supplant. National liberation based upon the enslavement of one sex, class, or race is actually a betrayal of the very nation that is supposedly liberated, and simply exchanges one set of masters, tyrants, and oppressors for another. Instead of seizing all power and wealth from men, they should simply force the men to share an equal measure of it with women. Revolutionary workers' democracy must be color-blind and gender-blind as well. Both patriarchy and matriarchy are equally evil."
On the other hand, the words of Communist Party First Secretary Anton Stavros might have gone too far, when he called for "the Communist Party of Gloria Regis to arise and seize control of the state from these gender-obsessed bourgeois reactionaries posing as revolutionaries. Feminist Collectivism is a betrayal of the ideals of Marx and Lenin, and must be branded as revisionism, nothing less. The only solution to this is the final workers' revolution of Gloria Regis, where workers of both sexes dismantle the capitalist pseudo-democracy and institute a people's democracy in its place, committed to socialism and the dictatorship of the proletariat, by the Party, the vanguard and champion of the working class."
While that would probably not be a good idea for the people of Gloria Regis, to trade Feminist Collectivism for Stalinist totalitarianism, Stavros's speech, and Adamski's, for that matter, has demonstrated that even many Communists and other leftists feel betrayed by what, after all has replaced one ruling class (capitalists) with another (women). When even your allies condemn you, clearly, you've gone too far. Maybe this will drive home to the leaders of Gloria Regis how much harm they have done their own revolution by their latest path of oppression, tyranny, and injustice. Men are not more fit slaves than women, and treating them as such does no favors to any nation, nor to the cause of human rights and dignity.

Joint Chacoan-Jedorian Offensive Begins in Ashab
Coalition Aims to Support Republican Forces Against Rebelling Theology Council
STRANA MECHTY - Field Marshall Dimitri Vadam, senior commissioned officer of the Jedorian Military, in conjunction with Foriegn Minister Andrei Paler, confirmed to reporters that Jedorian military forces operating in unison with armed forces of the Republica De Gran Chaco had begun a general offensive in northern Ashab with the aim of supporting the Republican Government against the Theology Council, who began rebelling against the Government several weeks ago in a general uprising that threatens to engulf the entire country in conflict. Although exact details were not revealed for 'security concerns', Field Marshall Vadam stated that naval, aerial and ground forces were involved in the offensive, under Chacoan operational command.
Foreign Minister Andrei Paler commented on the issue primarily in an explanatory fashion, highlighting Jedorian justification for intervention. "Late last year I had the opportunity to meet with President Anjideen concerning Jedorian-Ashabi relations. Our primary concern was the heavy usage of force by the Republican government in response to dissident movements, in particular the issue that led to our meeting was the Government bombing of a suspected Intaki Liberation Front location. Our meeting addressed several points, namely the Republic's method of dealing with it's internal issues and it's request for financial assistance."
"After the meeting, it was determined by our investigation that while the actions of the Republican Government were often times misguided and led to tragic losses of innocent life, given the limitations of the Republican Government's capabilities, along with the fractured and turbulent nature of Ashab's domestic political structure, we could not fully condemn such actions as unnecessary."
"Furthermore, the sudden open revolt by the Theology Council, led by the Patriarch Kurain, has caused significant concern within this administration. Government rule by the Ashabi Catholic Church has not been something to take comfort in; in 1869 powerful clergymen seized control of the government, modified the Christian Holy Book to support their own fundamentalist ideology, and promptly declared a 'crusade' against the Intaki, killing thousands, and committing such barbaric acts as burning people at the stake for charges of heresy, blasphemy and witchcraft. In response, the Intaki mobilized to defend themselves, and from 1871-1877, the First Ashabi Civil War was fought with great loss of life."
"Between 1877 and 1968, another four crusades were launched by various Patriachs, all with the intention of exterminating the Intaki. These conflicts all caused tremendous loss of life, and a Catholic victory in the final crusade saw the Intaki regulated to 2nd class citizens. In 1978 the Industrialists overthrew the Theology Council and established the Republic. Led by General Adid Sararik, the Republic embarked on a campaign to modernize the nation, prevent further Intaki discrimination, and curtail the brutality of the previous regime. During this time the Republic was forced to fight against the Intaki Liberation Front, which has since been branded a terrorist organization. Since 2010, President Anjideen has attempted to bring the Republic into the international world and has granted more rights to the Intaki, outlawing thier persecution."
"This is not to say that President Anjideen's actions have not been entirely noble. Republican methods of 'keeping the peace' have been known to involve a great deal of bribery and intimidation, and overzealous actions by ground commanders of the Republican armed forces cannot all be overlooked or brushed under the rug."
"However, the uprising by the Theology Council has sparked concern that a return to Catholic rule will only bring further bloodshed and more attempted acts of genocide against the Intaki. Patriarch Gehtas Kurain's violent rhetoric creates further cause of concern, as it was said by him "We will purge the nation of the Republicans. The usurpers! Make no mistake my fellow Ashabis, President Anjideen is the devil's man. We will purge the country of the true infidel that he gives aid and comfort. The heathen Intaki refuse to see the light of God. Instead they choose to live in sin, fornicating with each other and worshiping idols. Princess Anora Kador, we shall burn her at the stake for the witch she is."
"As a result of this, the Jedorian Government feels it has a moral obligation to prevent the return of a regime that by all indications wishes to continue a campaign of violence and ethnic cleansing. At the official request of President Anjideen, the Jedorian Confederation has intervened in support of the Republican Government of Ashab. It is hoped that after the conflict is concluded, the Confederation can assist the Republic in reconstruction, and more efficient and less violent methods of dealing with destabilizing domestic issues. As we speak, multi-national forces, be it pagans of Jedoria, Catholics of Chaco, or Intaki of Ashab work together to create the building blocks for a brighter future in Ashab. It is a shame that blood must be spilt and lives lost to accomplish this goal, and we ask Gaia to forgive our actions and understand we only seek a faster end to this conflict. In the interest of peace, Jedorian forces would immediately cease hostilities in the event of the Theology Council's agreement to a ceasefire. We hope and pray for a quick resolution to this conflict."
In other news, Jedorian security forces in New Othman have begun cooperating with Othmani Law Enforcement to end the hostage situation in Kahya.

In a social media comment that has been shared repeatedly with various citizens through the nation and the region, Progressive League Chairman Andrej Balewicz warned that, "While we have valid grievances against the treacherous regime in Gloria Regis, who are no friends, partners, or allies of ours, nor share any of our common values, there are legal issues presented by the invocation of Article VI that we might do well to consider, vis a vis the probable violation of the SAEC charter by the sanctions included in the Act. This was the sole reason I warned against adding Article VI as an amendment, though I ultimately supported it as part of the final statute, hoping that it would never need to be invoked. I think that the Prime Minister should have looked into said issues prior to invoking Article VI, which conflicts with and directly flouts the SAEC charter, or at least the Minister of Justice should have advised him of the legal contradictions involved."
In direct response to this comment, Christian Democratic Chairman Father Ioannis Kanakaredes clearly took issue with Balewicz and his stance, stating that, "When opposition parties are bullied, men are disenfranchised, private property is illegally seized, people of faith are persecuted, and election results are ignored, it's no time to worry about the impact on a trade agreement that we probably never should have signed or the risk to membership in a trade bloc that we never should have joined. SAEC is a pact with Beelzebub, as far as I am concerned. Only Lazodiria among its members is a respectable nation with a government worthy of the name. The fact that Deadora has blockaded Krutongo is an offense to all men and women of goodwill, and on top of the conflicts between Article VI and the charter, indicates to me that we should simply withdraw from the SAEC altogether. Then it won't be an issue, will it? I want no trade agreements with aggressor states like Deadora, anyway."
A survey of the internet revealed that 87% of all Valikans polled agreed far more with Kanakaredes than with Balewicz, indicating that the people are generally enraged at what Deadora and Gloria Regis have been doing, both with the Redstocking outrages in Gloria Regis and the Krutongo blockade, which was called by Federalist Chairman Mikis Baukis, "an affront to peace, goodwill, and human decency."
Baukis also announced that he intended for the Federalists to introduce a repeal bill in the Parliament to overturn the SAEC charter and withdraw United Valik from, "that trade agreement with the matriarchies." Kanakaredes declared in a status that such a bill would have the Christian Democrats as co-sponsors, making it clear that SAEC membership might very well be at stake. Many Valikans were already displeased to distraction with the Krutongo blockade, but this Gloria Regis mess has only made the SAEC more controversial than ever. We could be looking for new trade partners very soon indeed.

A Guide to the Directorate
Government for Dummies
The Constitution
The Noviteran constitution was adopted in 1865 turning the Free Noviteran Confederacy in to the United Federation of Novitera. It has gone through many changes such as turning the United Federation Congress into the Directorate. This document is a mandate from the people to form our three branches of federal government being the Executive, Directorate and Supreme Court as well as provisions establishing State governments. It guarantees the rights of the people and specifically enumerates the powers of the federal and state governments.
What is the Directorate?
The true name is the United Federation Directorate Panel. You may all get more exposure to the Trask Administration and its Executors but who really holds the reins? This is the legislature of our democracy although that can be considered a misnomer for the Directorate is more than that. Unlike many democracies, power in Novitera is concentrated in the Directorate which is more than just a legislative body. The Directorate contains 23 seats occupied by democratically elected "National Directors" or more commonly, "Directors". The primary mandate of the Directorate is to pass laws which requires a majority approval among the seating Directors.
How is the Directorate different from most legislatures?
Compared to most democracies this body plays a more direct hand in setting policy, budgets and overseeing the actions of the Executive government making its functions partially executory in nature. The Directorate can far more easily countermand actions of the Executive and in fact, has the power to seize agencies and departments normally controlled by the Executive branch in unique cases. Further, unlike some congressional democracies, the power of veto does not reside with the Prime Executor or President as it is more commonly called. The power of veto instead goes to the Chairman of the Directorate who occupies one of the 23 seats.
How are Directors elected?
Elections to the Directorate are done in three rotations of 7, 8 and 8. A Director who is elected to a rotation has four years until their term is up. Afterwards they can be reelected for a maximum of three terms. While the Director is serving out their term the other rotations are holding elections. With this system elections are done every 1 and one third year. Election to a seat is done by popular vote of the people. Eligible voters vote on which candidate they prefer most for each seat up for election. The number of candidates that can run for a specific seat is unlimited though almost always it is three being one candidate from each of party. These being the Civic Alliance, the United Federation Commonwealth Party and the Noviteran National Party. Although you may know them more commonly as the Patriot Party, Commonwealth Party and National Party respectively. The candidate with the most votes wins the seat.
Is every seat on the Directorate the same?
Again, this is where Novitera differs from most democracies. Every seat on the Directorate corresponds to multiple Committees that are usually related in nature (but this is not always the case). The Director who is elected to the seat becomes the head or "Officer" of these Committees being granted greater powers in administrating to that specific "sphere" of governance over the Committee's other members. For example, the Director who occupies seat number 6 is always the Officer of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Currently that is Director Mary Takeshi. The only seat that does not correspond to a Committee is seat number 1 which is occupied by the Chairman. The Chairman is given broad powers in overseeing all the Committees. Candidates for the Directorate are always chosen by their respective parties to run for a certain seat based on their unique qualifications in that area of governance.
How do Committees work?
A Committee is in charge of an area of governance. They do everything Directors are suppose to do such as setting policy, budgets and general oversight. A Committee can be responsible for an entire Executive department or agency. Examples of Committees include Finance, National Defense, Justice, Interior, Commerce and Energy. Committees are responsible for drafting legislation that relates to their "sphere" of governance to be approved by the rest of the Directorate. Committees are manned by a maximum of three Directors, one Officer and two others although sometimes a Committee only has an Officer. Every Director is the Officer of multiple Committees as well as members of others. Aside from the Committee's members that are made Officers of by virtue of their seat, Directors can choose to join others if there is an opening. To do this they must receive endorsements to joining the Committee from the other Directors. The Director with the most endorsements obtains membership to one of the Committees other two seats. If a Director is trying to gain membership to a Committee and is unopposed they must receive at least three endorsements. Once on that Committee the Director is a member for the rest of his or her term. If they are reelected they must go through the process again to renew their membership.
A Director chooses to sit on Committees they are not officers of for many reasons. This could be as much as wanting to get involved or more commonly, holding an important spot that leaves the Director's party as a whole in a better position to negotiate for other legislation or actions they want done.
Sounds like a lot of work for a Director.
True which is why each Director usually maintains large staffs to assist them.

Special Report
Altinum on War Footing, Undermines Hopes for Peace
Following a brutal Adiran-backed Confederate assault on Union troops in Arcologia, the Imperium has intervened in an effort to finally stabilize the situation in the Palisades. General Tauber of the 14th Infantry Division has said the ground operation is proceeding but has encountered resistance on the Line of Control, while Air Force General Sauls reports the loss of several fighters in Palisades airspace. The Curia has not yet revealed the full details of the fighting currently taking place, but in its announcement of the 14th's deployment it was stated that attacks on Imperial forces would be met with a declaration of war. The nation and the international community await the Curia's next announcement with great anticipation.
Unfortunately, a number of nations have openly dismissed the Curia's concerns and have accepted without question numerous unsupported claims by the DeGroot regime accusing the Imperium of terrorism and expansionism. These spurious attacks have taken place even in the chambers of the Cornellian Peace Organization, threatening to undermine commendable efforts by the Edomite and Shrailleen delegations at producing a fair and equitable framework for mediation and peacekeeping. Nations around the region have demonstrated a bias towards New Laconia in all things, condemning and sanctioning the Imperium without evidence. Although the Imperium has conceded the resignation of Secretary General Reyes, we have yet to hear from Deadora that the illegal blockade of Krutongo will be called off as they stated.
However, it is the Altian Federation that has first translated its rhetoric into action in Ceti. States throughout Altinum appear to be mobilizing for war, having announced a draft order and the deployment of an entire army corps to Adiron. This was met by sharp criticism by His Holiness Cardinal Robertson:
"This major military deployment is clearly aimed at threatening the Imperium, whether it is meant to take part in the Adiran invasion of Arcologia or to support an offensive on the border. Nevertheless, the Imperium cannot allow this provocation to go unanswered. To the Chancellor and the leaders of the Altian states, I would like to be as unambiguous as possible: the Imperium will not be bullied. Your actions bring the region ever closer to war by undermining the process started in the CPO and escalating tensions in Ceti."
While Altinum was once a bastion of traditional values, economic growth, and Western civilization, it has since fallen to the same degeneracy of liberalism, socialism, and atheism which is at the heart of the regime in New Laconia. It now parrots Adiran rhetoric and propaganda while maintaining forces on the western border in a futile effort to intimidate the Imperium. Without faith, however, the resolve of both the Adirans and Altians will falter.

Government publicly outlines defense reforms
Autor: Costea Brâncoveanu | 3 februarie 2016 | 7:00 SVTCostin Pârvulescu, the Secretary of the State Bureau of Administration, announced today that recent meetings between the State Bureau of Administration, the State Bureau of Defense and the Defense Oversight Committee of the Central People's Assembly proved successful in outlining defense reforms for the Popular Army.
The reforms, which were reached through a joint agreement between the cabinet level offices under direction of the Communist Party, will affect future operations of the Popular Army domestically and internationally. Outlined plans included revised drafting measures, which will be utilized for the first time in 10 years. Males between the ages of 18 and 22 who are not in university or another form of education, around 3 million people, shall be required to attend weekly basic military training. Reservists shall also be required to mobilize for training two times out of the month rather than once.
The Ground Forces will conduct further training and logistical exercises in coordination with the Interior Troops and the Air Force. Ground Forces will conduct exercises on responding to and repelling mock enemy invasions, while Interior Troops will practice securing national assets behind major military operations. The Air Force shall likewise conduct training exercises in responding to mock enemy attempts to gain air dominance over Verbiza. The Navy will also ramp up training operations in the Tempesta Ocean to simulate a naval attack of Verbiza or the possible need to transport supplies via ocean.
On order of President Costică Funar, Secretary Pârvulescu instructed the State Bureau of Foreign Affairs to notify neighboring nations of Verbiza's revised military training regimen. Secretary Pârvulescu also gave a statement regarding the exercises at a press conference.
"These reforms represent an examination of Verbiza's security needs over the past five years," Secretary Pârvulescu said. "In no way does it constitute a sign of aggression towards our neighbors and trade partners."
The reforms come after the Central People's Assembly affirmed its neutrality in regional conflicts last week. Central People's Assembly Chairman Alexandru Albu said that Verbizan defense measures were solely to ensure the safety of the country, the integrity of Verbiza's territory and the preservation of its trade routes.
"Verbiza shall not turn its weapons on another nation without just cause," Chairman Albu said. "Reforms to the frequency of training exercises merely reflect the realities facing the country."

SLAPJSZEMESGRAD, Rietumumark-- Nonagenarian Minister of Public Security Ojārs Rubiks died as a result of tuberculosis, ending a long reign of terror in teh Region. Communist aggression against private property and enterprise, religion and monarchy is believed to have had no small support from the now dead Minister of Public Security.
Some analysts suggest that communist spawned support for the Anarchist Uprising in New Edom as well as some of the elements of the independence movement in Gloria Regis were spawned out of Rietumimark, and encouraged by none other than Rubiks.
"Nevertheless," said Dr. Paul Aphek, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, "It is not proper that leaders of a Christian nation should gloat over the deaths of others. We hope and pray, though we do not hold out much hope, that Mr. Rubiks repented of his many sins before his death and met his Maker in peace. Our prayers also go out to his family and friends. Perhaps this may lead to a future of more friendly relations and a lessening of old policies which have had Rietumimark at odds with other nations in the Region."
