Humbled and honored beyond any speech, Severina finally stammered out a response.
"It used to be Therma, but I took my stepfather's last name of Anduriel. So it's Anduriel now," she coughed and blushed.
The honors and awards were not the fate she expected. To be honest, she really thought that she would be killed by the IYS, sooner or later, if she wasn't caught, raped, tortured, and then killed by them. The odds of that seemed quite plausible, especially earlier on.
The fact was that she cared about her stepfather a lot....he was very kind to her mother and herself. If his people were under attack, she would naturally do her part. Over time, she saw the moral outrage of all of the atrocities, not just what could happen to Lord Ciran Anduriel, half-Elf, half-Spaniard that he was. She had committed to the cause and become a true Olwean by adoption.
Not to mention that she had studied history and developed an extreme hatred of all forms of oppression, slavery, and tyranny.
Severina smiled as she realized that she could travel more easily and see other places at last. She had always wanted to do so. The medal named after John Brown the American abolitionist also pleased her immensely. Everything that she had read made her admire that martyr.
"Thank you, General," she smiled through her tears.
