The Imperial Birthday Gala! (IC)

Postby Ganos Lao » Sat Jul 07, 2012 3:51 pm

The birth of the Imperial Quintuplets had often been called the auspicious moment, a penultimate cause for celebration amongst the monarchists of the realm. These children had been cloistered within the walls of their mother's palace since they were born, raised in an atmosphere of Social Darwinism and Imperialism, coming out only to be gazed upon by the common man through the power armored veils of the underlings of the Chancellor Princess. The circumstances of their birth did not enable their birthday to become a national holiday but the birth of the quintuplets had managed to captivate the nation, and years later it still had a grip on the heart of the nation. Most Ganosians subscribed to the principles of their traditional nationalistic monarchism, and these children were heralded as the future of an empire that spanned many lands and included many peoples, an empire that emphasized tolerance and brotherhood but yet contained ministers who believed in the subjugation of lesser peoples.

None of the children knew this better then Crown Princess Erica. Eri. She who was born first. The heir to the Ganosian Crown. Erica had been groomed since birth by the Imperial Court, since it would be within her hands to lead Ganosia into the future. She did not grasp the intricate details of her position just yet, so the Empress had hoped she would under the tutelage of the Imperial Court's devoted agents. Malcolm Firoozbakht often seemed cold towards Erica, because it was often said that he was disgruntled over having not been the father to them, a symptom of his undying lust for the Empress. Nonetheless, he would work eagerly for their benefit, even to the point of verbally harassing birthday party planners who, to him, did not appropriately respect the tastes of the Empress, let alone her children.

As court attendants marched into her bedroom to open the silky purple curtains, rays of sunlight beamed through her large room. Erica heads to the dresser to brush her hair and get dressed into her day clothes while one of the attendants opens the window to let some fresh air into the room. The Empress soon walked into the room, brushing her daughter's hair while sternly ordering the attendants to procure the finest clothes out of the wardrobe of the princess. The Empress held full command of the wardrobe choices of her children, although she delegated to Felix the responsibilities for those of his sons. At times she'd reprimand him for not paying enough attention to them, like when Jakob went on a spree of shooting people with his water gun.

"Today is your special day!" the Empress said to her daughter in a cheerful fashion. "Today is your birthday!"

Erica loved her mom despite her protectionist tendencies. Mother's tendencies had led to Erica, let alone the other children, being rather cloistered within the walls of the Imperial Court. But Erica liked to listen to her mother's ramblings about fashion. Her voice felt rather melodious, angelic in quality to her ears, and she loved whenever Dad would talk to her about life in Veceria, that distant land where the family occassionally traveled to so they could meet Dad's folks and their cousins on his side of the tree.

As can be ascertained, Erica was brought up amidst much structure and order - the structure and order of her mother and the oligarchs who aspired to maintain their collective position during Erica's reign. The heroes of the revolution who had significant investments that they sought to maintain through the ebbs and flows of Ganosian monarchism. Auntie Allison seemed to be more interested in Erica then she had been in the other children, and it was said that the oligarchs were already planning out contingency plans in case Erica's reign didn't proceed as they hoped it would, but these were so far only mere whisperings amongst Court attendants and nobles and not substantial fact.

As Erica walked out of the room, the court attendants all bowed and wished her well. She could hear them heading to the rooms of the other children, hearing Prince Jakob being all rowdy again, hearing Dorothy and Katherine talking to Felix about Jakob's incident with the family fountain where he used it to fill up his water gun, which he then used on a spree of spraying people all over the palace complex with it.

Whenever Erica saw the beautiful garden, full of fruit and flowers, with green grass and sparkling fountains, she was so astonished that not a word could she say, for she had never in her life seen anything like it. The Imperial Gardens were absolutely sublime - the pinnacle of horticultural achievement, a bastion of the cultural sophistication of the Ganosian civilization. Quinn took Erica into the Imperial Gardens that morning to discuss the party. She looked about her, and ran hither and thither gathering fruit and flowers, and her little dog Rufus, who was bright blond all over, dancing before her, crying 'Bow-wow-wow,' and turning head over heels in the most enchanting way that made Erica squeal with happiness while petting and playing with him. Rufus, despite his appeal, was often a controversial member of the Imperial Household. The Empress sometimes did not like the mutt for his harassment, albeit playful, of her cat, but she tolerated his existence to keep Erica happy.

Plus, he was quite popular amongst the other children, and it was said that even Allison would tolerate him when he came to investigate her looking over reports while having tea with Quinn. Everybody was amused at Frisk's antics, but all of a sudden he ran away into a little bush, and the Crown Princess was following him until Quinn summoned her to be by her side again.

"Let the dog explore, Eri. We have to discuss your party," Quinn said.

Quinn, for all her flaws, had seemingly reformed since the beginning of her reign into a competant ruler - a mother of the people who would watch over her children, bestowing her grace upon them in the form of a powerful economy and much popularity abroad as a respectable nation.

"As Crown Princess, you have to be on your best behaviour," the Empress told Erica. "You are representing not only our family but the Ganosian nation. The entire world will one day take note of you, not just our friends. You have to show them that you are capable."

Erica was no stranger to these lectures. Nearly everyone she met since birth gave her some form of lecture over the littlest things. Sometimes they were even in other languages to test her knowledge of the languages of the Empire that she was learning during her classes. After all, Erica would soon be the sovereign of countless millions, let alone within Ganosia proper.

"I will, Mom. I wonder what the outsiders will bring me at the party," Erica said sweetly.

Quinn smiled. "I'm sure they'll bring you all sorts of fun toys and games to play with. Just remember to share the game console with the others if any of you get any new games. I don't want to have a repeat of that episode with Jakob."

"Yes, Mom," Erica said. She remembered the rather vicious incident that she had to witness when Jakob and Felix Junior fought over who should get access to the family game console while the girls wanted to watch that show about fairies that they loved a lot. Eventually Jakob had to be given a timeout when he hit Felix Jr and earned his mother's ire which led to both boys losing privileges to the game console while the girls got to watch Those Small Fairies, an apparent internet phenomenon.

"Good, Eri." Quinn smiled. Eri was the nickname given to the Crown Princess since birth. "If you behave tonight without any incidents, I'll give you a special gift."

Eri's eyes lit up when she heard that, but Quinn would not divulge what it was. All Quinn could do was calmly tell her daughter that she had to be a good girl to get any information about it. They made it back to the throne room, but Quinn had Erica sent with some attendants of the court to make sure that her party gear was all prepared for tonight's gala. The Empress was quite picky with what she wanted her children to wear - she took charge of their fashion choices since their birth, and often her husband could find her bickering with court attendants over how tacky some dress was for her daughters or how her son's necktie looked crooked.

This time she enabled the attendants to take charge for once while she stayed behind to deal with the latest affairs of state.

"My nieces and nephews."

Allison Amber slipped out of the comfortable bed that morning with that upon her lips. She knew that she'd have to attend the party only because the kids liked their Auntie Allison. She herself never imagined having her own kids. They were too human a gift to be graced with. Too distracting from matters of state. Worse of all, she'd have to be intimate with some chump - a common mugu - to acquire them, unless she adopted a Nalayan orphan or something of that sort. Add to the controversy that already was around the Ganosian adoption of Nalayan street kids.

She slipped into her robe rather quickly - limiting the exposure of the two great scars that laced her flesh. She used to imagine it felt like her angel wings had been plucked from her flesh by her father when he dismissed such early rhetoric. She scoffed when she remembered such deranged ramblings. The mansion of the Chancellor Princess had little in the way of household staff - the bare minimum, since Allison preferred solitude and independence from the fineries that were typical of Quinn, Beatrice, and too many of her other relatives. Allison noticed that her faithful butler Reginald entered the room. Reginald was often called a skeevy opportunist by most, and Allison often joked that he was a slimy bastard of a man, but she kept him around because he was a devoted servant, one who would often help out with security details.

"Your sister's children will be celebrating their birthday today," Reginald said, bowing with one hand across him. "I suppose you will be attending?"

Allison Amber smirked at him. She decided to neglect getting changed until he left the room, which he did, forgetting his place in things. Reginald immediately realized this and bowed profusely.

"My apologies, Mistress."

Reginald slipped out into the hall, awaiting his Mistress' command.

When she exited the room in her typical attire - the uniform of the Grand Mistress, the Mother of the Revolution and the Empire - Reginald smiled at his Mistress. Allison led him along through the halls of her mansion, a cold and rather dreary place in the eyes of the Empress. Whereas the Empress decked her mansion out in lavish fineries, Allison preferred a rather Prussian aesthetic, coldness and classical sculptures depicting famous philosophers and soldiers. Allison's palace was also moreso guarded. An elite Secret Service company stood their ground around the palace and made sure that no one got in, and if they did, that no one got out.

"Of course I will be attending the party." Allison said.

"Moreso out of a duty to maintain the Empire then to celebrate," Reginald joked.

"Those children are the children of Quinn, Reginald. We can't celebrate such a tragedy, can we?" Allison smirked.

Allison and Reginald walked all the way to the dining room. There, Allison enjoyed the simple breakfast she had always been accustomed to. Reginald would serve Allison her meal and then leave the room, to leave Allison to her inner deliberations about today's events. With Quinn's children having their birthday and all, the streets of Ganosia's cities, and those of its colonies, would be in an uproar of patriotic fervor over the prestigious occassion. She knew that the Governors of the colonies would soon be sending their congratulations, and that delegates from each would be attending to bring their gifts. The streets would be paved with flags. After finishing her meal, Reginald entered the room again upon being summoned to take away the dishes while Allison went to her study to deliberate on matters of state that may have still been around, before she could consider herself free from them and ready to devote everything to enduring the unbearable.

Some nameless underling burst into the room with Director Thrardasara's deliberation on the merits of Operation Transcendence. This was the hypothetical plot to spring Admiral Rand and - perhaps - the King and Queen of New Edom into Ganosian asylum. While overlooking the deliberation, Reginald noticed that Director Thrardasara's signature vocabulary had seemingly been avoided, causing him to comment upon this.

"It seems she did not devote several pages to her anti-Edomite rhetoric," Reginald nodded whilst leaving the room, forbidden to observe such materials.

Allison chuckled as he left the room. "She knows there's a time for that. It wasn't then."

Director Thrardasara was one of the hardliners of the Empire - a cold and calculated woman who believed that submission to the will of the Empress - as interpreted by Allison's regime - was in Ganosia's best interests. Allison knew that she had always looked down upon lesser peoples. The Edomites, Director Thrardasara had often believed, were primitive savages who lacked the order and structure that the Ganosian Empire's peoples had, and that this implied their inferiority and undesirability. They seek in their blasphemies what they cannot find in their consciousness, Director Thrardasara had observed.

But Director Thrardasara was only in spirit this morning in the form of her deliberation on her own proposed operation.

She had intended to issue directives ordering PSICOM agents to "expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize" the activities of the Free Congress, the Elwe Independence Organization, and other seemingly anti-Ganosian groups. While Operation Transcendence was originally little more then a 'glorified rescue operation,' as Allison told Reginald it was, Director Thrardasara had considered its potential to expand Ganosian interests beyond securing the safety of the Monarchist leaders. But Director Thrardasara highlighted that the chances of success were minimal due to expected interference from the Lamonians, the Wagdoggies (stupid name for a people was found within the margins) and the Nalayans. Director Thrardasara had often admired the Nalayans, so from her point of view it was somewhat disheartening to have to make this claim about them.

This was the only political highlight - every other report was merely ho-hum reports from the colonies. She leaned back in her seat and rubbed her temples, and felt the rush of dread wash over her to fill her mind with that same typical contempt for Quinn that she had always had, no matter how warm the relationship had gotten since the days of voracious feuding between them.

"This is going to be a long one, isn't it?"

"The Empire awaits her future!"

Such cries echoed throughout the nation. Like war cries from the mouths of hardened patriots. The Empire's seemingly vast legions of hardened patriots decked entire streets in flyers and flags to honor the upcoming celebrations. Ganosians from all over the Empire - no matter what ethnic group you belonged to, you were always seen as Ganosian first and foremost - were eagerly anticipating the celebrations that would free them momentarily from personal responsibilities. The children of the Empress were all decked out in fine clothing in front of the palace gates that afternoon, while relatives and their bodyguards gathered around them with gifts and well wishes. Malcolm Firoozbakht reappeared again to make sure that his sovereign's desires for the aesthetics of the ballroom had been sufficiently honored. Finding that they had been, he resigned himself to the background while Chekov made sure that security measures were 'ruthlessly established' all over the Palace and the surrounding area.

When it became night was when the gala officially began, with the arrival of the Empire's elites - relatives of the children, governors of the colonies, and other distinguished men and women. The gala would be held within the Palace's ballroom, where countless functions including the notorious family reunions had been held in. There was this lavish table set up with the Empress at its head, while her husband sat beside her - the sons were on his side while the daughters were on hers. There were already tons of presents, namely from the local guests, and there were tons of guests already gathered around with their children, talking about whatever came to mind.

Allison Amber had been the last of the higher ranking relatives of the children - Quinn expected this, of course - to arrive at the gala, walking through the doors of the ballroom in her uniform rather then the evening dresses that her sisters and cousins had worn, although Princess Irikah begrugingly wore one only because she didn't want to drag a disappointed mother around on such an occassion. Irikah's dress was appropriately lavish, befitting her station, but she felt it was too foreign, and often found herself trying to repress criticizing her father for kowtowing before her mother's insufferable protectionism. Allison merely laughed, before the children all began to appear in various forms in front of her with greetings and hugs.

Hugs! Allison soon realized why she sometimes hated those accursed things.

"Auntie Allison's uniform is very valuable to her - please don't wipe your snot on it, Jakob," Allison said, trying not to hiss at him or even summon the nearby Secret Service agent to pull him aside and back to his mom. She thought that he was the brat of the family due to his incessant need to prank people and spray them with his water guns and overall be a nuisance towards other members of the Imperial Dynasty. The last straw had been when Jakob had turned on a rather large fan to blow away the remains of Allison's reports on the situation in New Edom when the fan swallowed and chewed them all up.

Crown Princess Erica watched her mother reprimand Jakob for the act - she didn't notice Quinn subtly snickering at the thought of Allison's "ugly attire" being used as a snot rag - and then listened to Allison talk about how her gifts were being brought in by the usual guys who dealt with such matters.

But while Jakob began to horse around, and as the other children went to try out their gifts, Erica looked around the room to see all the diversity around her until the foreign guests began to trickle in....

There flight from the homeland of The United World Order to Ganos Lao had been confortable. No delays or bad weather on there way there, Galev was a liutenant in the Ordernite Guard Korps and a very tall and musclar man. He wore a prussian officer like uniform with medals and ribbions pinned to his chest on the uniform along with that was his officers hat which had a single gold star on it. He was here not for the Gala but for Ganosian women, the reproduction project he was there as a scout in disguise as he would see what Ganosian women were here at the Gala. The Ordernite Guard Korpsmen were the ones that were going to be impregnating the women, so they must be good and firm women so they're children could be strong and healthy. When entering the Gala he saw many women of all kinds here, his eyes glared about at the women that had attended in there dresses and assorted clothing. He saw a few children running about, might of been the birthday children. Along with Galev were two ambassadors from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Ambassador Armarticus smiled as he looked at the Gala ballroom he had stepped foot in, utterly amazed at such work of design and engineering. He also was impressed by the people here, obviously this was a Gala and the very wealthy that being the Ganosian royal family would be here with there esteemed colleages. Armarticus wore a white plain collar shirt with a grey silver vest and a pair of black dress pants and shoes. Armarticus got his hair cleaned and properly jelled slick to his liking. Along with Armarticus was Ambassador Uthel who also was the ambassador chosen from the Ministry was just as astonded by the Gala, so many different people of all ethnicites and everything. He glanced over at Armarticus with a smile, "Doesn't this place look amazing!" he said astounded. Armarticus smiled and nodded his head a few times.

"It very much is Uthel, very amazing.!" he said in return as he glared over to Liutentant Galev. "What do you think about this, officer?" Galev looked over to Uthel and smirked. "I need a drink. If they have drinks, then I will be as amazed as you two" he said with a chuckle as he left towards some form of refreshments table as he became unseen inside the large crowd of wealthy persons. "Damn Korpsmen, drunks they are" Uthel said with a shake of his head and a scowl under his breath.

Anneli had hated the long plane trip to Ganosia, but had certainly planed on making one for quite some time, visiting the homeland of her stepfather was one of her main goals now that they had gotten to know one another. She had brought her baby Annette with her to the gala, but would have preferred to keep er at home although she didn't have the luxury to do so. She was wearing something simple for the birthday party, a red dress that matched her equally red hair. "What a pretty place... I think this was the same exact place my mother met her current husband like last year or so... sadly I didn't go to that but I heard it was fun."

With Anneli was her two cousins Elisa and Marjorie, who were both older than her. Elisa was a blonde lady in her early thirties, who was a member of the Riemaian Imperial Guard while also being a member of the Royal family of Riemaia. She was wearing a black wrap dress with black high heels and stockings, and was also carrying their gift to the quintuplets; the Riemaian-made game console known as the Funcube, which had capabilities for up to 6 players at once. She was fine carrying the large box around, although it was nearing a weight of almost sixteen kilograms with all the controllers and games it came with to entertain people of all ages for a quite long while.

Lastly there was Marjorie, who was in her late twenties or thirties, nobody really had cared to ask her age for quite a long time, or to even write it down on a calendar. She was wearing something more casual, a blue wool sweater and skirt that went to mid calf, which left her sandals and feet exposed for all to see. She had long flowing brown hair and emerald green eyes, and also wore prescription glasses like Anneli usually did. Like the other two, she did pitch in a third of the funds for the present they had gotten the kids, and was also hoping they enjoyed it as much as they did when they were back home on their individual ones. "Well that was the first time I ever heard of your mother remarrying, I swore she said the last time she was going to never remarry, but oh well."

The ride to Ganosia had been long, but quite comfotable all things considered. Lord Wolf Xalian stood near an open chest, inside was five statues, one of a different animal, each with gems for eyes, and each set of "eyes" where different and would only fit the statue they sat in. Well the gems where in silk bags tied to the statues. Each statue was said to hold the spirit of it's respective animal, and that gave the holder of the statue the attributes of that animal. "Falcon, check, snake, check, wolf, check, owl, check and lion...check" he said. He checked the bags and saw the gems where in them, then he closed and locked the chest. It was heavy, made of the finest oak and the purest white marble. It took three people at each end just to lift into the car they would take to the gala. Lady Kalnas Astradi and Diplomat AnnaSophia Holub where already in the car, talking about the presents. "So tell me again Kal, what does each animal reprasent?" AnnaSophia asked. "The owl for wisdom, lion for strength, wolf for protection, falcon for honour and snake for elegence, each gems also have meaning as well, the snake has opals for beauty, the owl has emeralds for intelligence, the lion has rubies for cunning, the wolf gets sapphires for loyalty and the falcon gets garnets for honesty" Lady Kalnas said. Wolf got into the car and they drove off to where the gala would be held. Kalnas and Wolf wore thier military dress uniform, much to AnnaSophia's protests. AnnaSophia wore a dress of the best desert silk.

Once they reached the location they got out of the car and walked up to the main area where the guests where gathering. "Anna, do you have the diplomatic missive you wanted to hand the rulers of Ganosia?" Wolf asked. "If I didn't I wouldn't be a good diplomat" AnnaSophia said, smiling. "Of course you do, and that is why you where promoted to that position, no other diplomat would have the...tenacity to use a children's birthday gala to try for diplomatic dealings" Wolf said.

Macron Aerodrome, Vann Dalen, Remad: 9:45AM
The aerodrome at Vann Dalen was surrounded by banks of thick fog that slightly frightened The Elected Monarch of Remad, Erik Michelson. His Father, Kristofer Michelson, had died on a similar morning while flying a ageing air-mail aerocraft over Remad, delivering mail to a seaside town, before spattering himself upon the cliffs around Jan Mayer Island, but Erik quickly replaced the thought of his father’s death with the plans for the upcoming Gala for quintuplets of Ganos Lao. It had been heralded as Remad’s newest attempt to enter the circles of international politics, a entrance into a new golden age for his native land, but before that they needed to load the quintuplets presents, or at least the smaller ones. The truck drive slowly backed up to the loading dock to the government owned Caravelle 12, and placed the truck into park. Immediately workmen pounced upon the 6 foot long crate sulking in the trucks back and hauled it into the cargo hold of the waiting aircraft.”Mr. Monarch” a voice caught Erik’s attention, a feminine, young naval air force secretary was beckoning him to climb the ramp into the passenger compartment of the jet, with a smile she spoke “Captain Latte and Majority Leader Nourge are already aboard, everyone’s waiting for you” he hesitated, then climbed the stairs into the cabin, where he was greeted by Captain Karl Latte, a personal friend from his naval years, when he enjoyed flying and Mrs. Kirsten Nourge, the majority speaker of the parliament. The former was dressed in his finest, dark blue naval uniform, and his position cap, a golden iceberg decorating its front, polished with the finest care, Mrs. Nourge was dressed in a jacket, thick and warm, but once the outside’s freezing air dissipated inside the cabin, she removed her coat to expose a knee-length skirt and bright red wool button-up coat. As these three diplomates of Remad to the world sat down and then restrained themselves to the aircraft’s seats, the huge engines of the jet roared into life, the aeroplane slowly turned down onto the taxiway, past the commercial gates, and to the end of the first runway, the government jetliner swung onto the runway, stopped, then roared down the runway, prepared to leave Remadian soil. As the jet broke through the cloud layer at just over 1000 feet, the heads of state and their secretaries began the normal ruse of world diplomacy in the skies of the world.

Some hours later, in Ganosia
The box was slowly wheeled into the room and was silently parked in the corner, and as a last remark, a workman fashioned a quick bow out of tape and stuck it to the top of the box, the workmen chuckled and left the room, probably to find some pub or other establishment to drink and mingle with the natives of this nation, human and nonhuman alike. As the workmen left the Remadian diplomats entered, Captain Latte, his eyes searching for another navy man, or at least another elderly gentleman, Mrs. Nourge’s primary concern was to finish her memorization of the list of foreign dignitaries she had begun studying on the flight from Remad, sped through on the drive from the aerodrome, and was now repeating in her head as they stepped into the hall. Erik was still wondering what was the name of that blasted song that was being sung by that street performer was while being driven through the capital city, he was sure he had heard it before, it had to have been from his childhood. “I see that the present has been handled carefully, Mr. Monarch and Mr. Latte” Mrs. Nourge pointed out, but both of the men knew it was her way of saying, politely, Don’t do anything remotely idiotic, don’t even think of it Both noted and Captain Latte replied “She better be well handled or those army scabs who flew over here with us to escort it aren't getting a ride home!” Latte was pleasantly surprised by the acoustics of the room, he through in a small chuckle to boot. For glory, family and country, full speed aheadthought the Elected Monarch, a old navy proverb, only used before events, usually coincided by a toast with latte around there’s going to be a few toasts before the night’s end he chuckled at his own inside joke. The three Remadians divided and spread into the room, Latte to check the present was intact, Nourge to mingle with the other dignitaries and Michelson, to congratulate the quintuplets, wherever they were...

The Kaiser gazed out the window of the armored black limousine he and his wife were situated in.
Their driver, Adolfus, notified them they were approaching the palace.

"Ah, I see, Adolfus. Thank you."

They reached the front steps. The limousine slowly came to a halt, and the two Prussian flags at the front of the vehicle slowly blew in the breeze.
Two of the four accompanying members of the Kaiserliche Garde (Imperial Guard) dismounted, one opening the door and the other standing beside him at attention.

"Adolfus - you had the children's presents taken around back?"

"Ja, Majestät."

"Good."

The Kaiser stepped from the long armored vehicle. He wore a cross between a military uniform and a suit - specially tailored for the occasion. Being what many called "the second Soldier-King," it was virtually unheard of to see Kaiser B.E. Steinbach out of uniform - and this case was no different. Thinking a full Prussian general's uniform - pickelhaube, Prussian blue tunic, and the like - might be slightly inappropriate for a children's birthday gala, he had the best tailor in Berlin craft a magnificent (-ly expensive) suit suited for the occasion. Made with the emperor's taste for military pageantry in mind, as well as the occasion, the pants were black, made to fit in His Majesty's impeccably shined jackboots. His coat was black as well, reaching down to several inches below his waist. He wore several medals of rank, but not so many as to jangle around and be cumbersome to movement. The shirt underneath was blindingly white, tucked tightly in.
He turned around and offered his wife his hand. She slid out, smiling at him as she reached the ground. She wore a long, rich green dress, reminiscent of the Antebellum Southland's style. It was long, reaching down onto her feet, but the top came low, reaching about halfway down her chest. She stood up, balancing perfectly on her black stiletto heels.

"Shall we proceed, madam?" said the Kaiser, with a gleam in his eye.

He took his arm in hers, and began leading her up the steps to the palace, their final destination, after the long ride in the jet and the final wait in the limousine.

All four of the Kaiserliche Garde had now dismounted, and they accompanied their king and queen up the steps, holding their rifles at the ready.
Once the pair reached the door, the armed soldiers halted, knowing this is where they would leave the people they were sworn to protect.
The Kaiser slid his arm from his wife's. He unbuckled his ceremonial sword, wanting to honor the wishes of the family he was visiting. He handed it to the nearest member of the Secret Service.

"I suppose you shall take care of this, hmm?"

His voice implied playfulness, a sly joking tone, but his dark blue eyes implied something different entirely. They were cold, deep, menacing. What they implied was unpleasant consequences if anything happened to the Kaiser's blade.
Turning back to his left in a military left-face, he returned his arm to his wife's and marched into the palace, the door being opened by a servant or something of the sort.
He looked around, and ran his hand over his blond hair, slicked back across his head.

"A beautiful home, to be sure."

Chancellor Princess Allison Amber casually sipped from her glass - some berry juice imported from some colony whose name she couldn't remember - while observing the various foreign guests beginning to trickle into the ballroom. She had just finished contending with the children of her sister - that wretched, stuck up bitch with her superiority complex rooted solely in what she believed was proper fashion. She looked upon the foreigners with an innate curiosity - noticing the Riemaians in particular since they had been quite close to the Empire since her cousin Lance bedded the Empress Dowager of Riemaia. Allison smirked, when she heard a familiar voice behind her with his teeth squares of iced mango and watermelon on a skewer that rested upon his hands. Those strong, capable hands that had often held a Riemaian empress.

"Ain't she beautiful?" the voice said, as the muscular and lean figure emerged out of the background commotion behind the Chancellor Princess. "She's may not be of my flesh and blood, but I like to think that I should still be there for her regardless."

Allison turned sharply to face the tenderhearted Ganosian prince who was often called the Riemaian, in honor of his cultural assimilation into the namesake of his moniker - Lance Anderson-Gursoy in the very familiar form that he had donned upon himself during the Second Ganosian Revolution, being one of the older princes of the Ganosian realm since he was born to Ian Brandon Anderson long before he had usurped the Ganosian throne, one which Allison and Quinn had to compromise extensively with the Gursoy to assume direct control of after him. Allison did not mind this man's presence - he was bearable, since he restrained the sappiness all too well whenever he was around Little Miss Cynic.

"I figured you'd be here - the whole bloody family's managed to get along well enough to confine themselves within this ballroom," Allison smirked, remembering rather fondly the subtle hostility that lay between her relatives. It was her key to cloistering herself within her mansion, a splendid isolation untouched by foreign hands. Lance, on the other hand, did not seem to mind his relatives, although he had spent the party so far in the company of the Peshawar Lancers, members of an illustrious regiment originating from the Ganosian Raj. The Crown Jewel of the Empire! Allison had never ventured to India, although she knew various relatives had ventured to the Raj to check out the sights or marry the local women, creating notable mixed race dynasties. When Allison noticed them behind Lance, she snickered, causing Lance to reciprocate with affection for his cousin.

"Those guys could never haze a prince," Lance affirmed, recalling the Peshawar Lancer traditions passed down amongst their members even years prior to the Ganosian occupation. They were the sons - there were no women in the Lancers, unless she was under them - of the Ganosian Raj! Anglo-Indians sworn to patriotic duty with a bayonet in their hand and a bottle of gin in the other in a silly combination. Fighting men, whose wages bought what their meager farms and suffering businesses could not grow or produce.

"They'll haze anyone who doesn't have a third orifice," Allison said, reminding herself of how the Lancers would often pompously chase women around wherever they seemed to be stationed. Truth be told, not every Lancer acted like this, but it was hard to break with entrenched stereotypes. Thank God they weren't in Nalaya, Allison suddenly murmured.

Lance laughed. "You think everyone is obnoxious, cousin."

"Humanity has not failed in reminding me." Allison scoffed. Lance had never been hostile to Allison's misanthrophy - he had always tried to do the family man thing, try to work around it to establish some connection with her - after all, she was bloodkin, and he had always said he'd defend them from harm. But eventually Lance took his leave and went over to embrace Anneli and warmly greet Marjorie and Elisa. Allison merely listened to the Peshawar Lancers' ramblings before she decided to sneak into the oblivion of the background partygoers and become hidden.

Riemaia wrote:Anneli had hated the long plane trip to Ganosia, but had certainly planed on making one for quite some time, visiting the homeland of her stepfather was one of her main goals now that they had gotten to know one another.

"Your mother thought it was lovely too. But I guess that's a given due to Quinn's involvement with its maintenance," Lance smirked. He stood imposingly beside his beloved stepdaughter and explained the significance of the ballroom, a litany of historical data that went back decades, even before the rise of the First Ganosian Republic. Lance, being born long before his father had desired to take over Ganosia, could easily recite a bunch of dates and people with a significant connection to the settling of tonight's gala.

"I hope your mother is doing alright," Lance mused. "I've managed to keep in touch since I left Riemaia, but recently she hasn't been replying - hope she hasn't fallen ill or anything like that."

Lance snapped his fingers and some underling came towards Elisa to take the box she held and put it with the other gifts. Lance welcomed Elisa to Ganosia whilst this happened, and said that she looked rather nice tonight. "You're bound to get many a man's attention with that attire on, but I suppose even circumstances like these demand such fashion."

Lance had overheard Marjorie's words, nodding in deep thought. "Indeed. She told me that herself when things between us were getting heated, but it's nice to know that she was willing to give us a chance - there's nothing I appreciate better in this life then her at my side."

Remad wrote:The three Remadians divided and spread into the room, Latte to check the present was intact, Nourge to mingle with the other dignitaries and Michelson, to congratulate the quintuplets, wherever they were...

The Imperial Quintuplets could be found at the table of their mother the Empress, enjoying their alotted meals while the Empress warmly observed her immediate surroundings. She knew that most of her family had managed to arrive to celebrate the birthday of her children, while the foreign guests seemed to be getting along rather nicely with her fellow locals. Dozens of dialects and languages were spoken just inside this large room, and it made the Empress feel immersed in the works of her minions - the oligarchs, the soldiers, the bureaucrats, the common man.

The Empress eventually slipped out of her seat to make her rounds, patrolling the ballroom to attend to the desires of her guests. The Peshawar Lancers were the first to unveil a toast for their lady sovereign which was soon to assimilate others who'd join in when the leading Lancer began to make some obnoxiously boisterous speech. Then came the various colonial guests who all made sure to throw in a token toast on the behalf of their brothers and sisters back home wherever they came from. Ganosia rules the waves, it was commonly said, but the Ganosian Navy knew better then to rally blindly around such patriotic dogma. Eventually the Empress noticed Michelson was heading towards her children, so she intercepted him, like a mother bear whenever her children were noticed by strangers.

"You must be one of the foreign attendees. I am the Empress of Ganosia," she said, interrupting him.

United Nations Alliance wrote:Once they reached the location they got out of the car and walked up to the main area where the guests where gathering.

With Michelson incapacitating the Empress, AnnaSophia would have to wait her turn, or she could've tried to establish first contact with the sister of the Empress, who was lurking somewhere in between a congregation of South Eerian landowners. Abishag Korey - the Foreign Minister of the Ganosian Empire - was also around the ballroom, but she had been deliberately trying to shirk her station, hopeful to have some period of time to herself to "celebrate," not really up to the task of delving into another pile of paperwork.

Prussia-Steinbach wrote:-snip-

The Prussians would've undoubtedly been accosted by the waiters who were making their usual rounds around the ballroom, hawking their wears; snacks from various colonies on shiny silver platters. Most of them happened to be rather young men, and women, wearing black and white ensembles that made them look ripped out of the brochures of stereotypical French restaurants. They were multiracial, each representing some faraway component of the machine that was the Ganosian Empire and a couple of the females among them were nekos, their tails sticking out of little holes. Of course they would cater not only to the Prussians, but every other guest as well who happened to be in the ballroom. Even the men of the United World Order whose motives were so far unknown, assuming they were into that sort of thing. Of course they'd be served as well.

"Fancy a snack, sir?" was the mantra of the night, it seemed.

As Wolf and Kalnas mingled with military people from other nations, discussing various different militaryish things such as training and how they thought current conflicts would go, AnnaSophia walked around, greeting various guests, and finally, without realising it, walked up to the sister of the Empress and introduced herself. "Hello, I don't believe we've met; I am AnnaSophia Holub, High Diplomat of the United Nations Alliance,a nd part of thier delegation here for the party" she said. "And you are?" she asked, waiting to see if the custom on a first meeting was a handshake as most did, or a small bow, if there was anything like that.

Central Monavia’s summer climate was relatively mild and inviting by most standards. The ambience that its residents enjoyed was the result of seasonal rains that sprinkled the earth with cool droplets, light winds that caressed every field, a glowing array of sunbeams, and the calls of migratory birds. Geese nested in the southern cities along the coast, though some were satisfied with more northerly locations with favorable weather. The air in Chalcedon had grown warmer throughout June, and by the beginning of July it was bordering on a hundred degrees Fahrenheit at high noon. The sky was spotted with occasional clouds that swelled up for several hours until they loosed their heavy burdens and allowed gravity to distribute the cool showers that fell away from them.

The fourth was a sunny day with no clouds. No rain was expected, the wind was weak, and birdwatchers would have to content themselves with observing flocks that seemed to suffer from boredom as they took shelter in the shade of trees and buildings. Government workers, however, were preoccupied as usual. The weather did not seem to interfere with their work, especially the work of the postal service and couriers. Though they may have considered the fourth a day of business-as-usual, the individuals who had been in the employ of the Monavian government for many years had learned a valuable lesson from all of their experience. They knew quite well that the days when nothing was expected to happen were actually the ones during which changes were most likely to take place and excitement was to be expected.

The Monavian postal service processed countless parcels and letters every day, but they did not handle every single delivery. A second agency in the form of the Central Government Courier Service existed to handle all of the special deliveries that fell outside the regular postal service’s jurisdiction. Diplomatic correspondence, important letters between ministers and other high officials, copies of proposed treaties, completed drafts of new legislation, and classified files were among the things they processed. The couriers, who were easily recognized by their starched burgundy uniforms with white trim, performed their services on demand, answering summonses at a moment’s notice.

At around eleven o’clock on the morning of July fourth, a letter arrived in Chalcedon that clearly bore the distinct markings of the Ganosian monarchy, among other characteristics that made it a high priority delivery. A postal official summoned a courier to pick it up and make a direct delivery to the Royal Residence, where she could drop it off in the mailroom located on the first floor—or take it directly to the person or persons to whom it as addressed. No couriers were available until eleven-thirty, at which point one promptly appeared to pick it up. Minutes later, it was in the hands of Karina Malko, a light-complexioned woman with curly red hair.

Malko had celebrated her thirty-second birthday on the twenty-fifth of June and thus had spent more time working for the CGCS than most people who had attained her age. She had already spent eight years—a full quarter of her life—working in an agency where the average age at which couriers began their line of work was twenty-nine, for most of them had been employed in the postal service or in private sector shipping services to gain work experience prior to applying for such a job. Most twenty-four-year-olds found private sector jobs working for an established business or started ones of their own or pursued higher education. A few took up government posts, joined the military, attended seminaries, or did more exciting things than locking sensitive letters and files inside aluminum cases and drive around through heavy traffic to make rush deliveries. In the opinions of some, Miss Malko’s job was no more exciting than delivering pizzas. She had chosen to disregard such prejudices and set out on a path of her own choosing.

The first floor of Malko’s destination, the Royal Residence, contained a room elaborately outfitted with surveillance systems and fortified against security breaches. The images recorded by the cameras that watched the grounds were displayed on monitors in the palace’s security office, which at the moment was occupied by a team of four soldiers of the Royal Guard. At around 12:25 that afternoon, they noticed a bright red two-door coupe pull up to a set of ornate wrought iron gates at the east entrance to the grounds. Recognizing its license plate number as belonging to one of the vehicles in the CGCS fleet, they approved its entry. One man remotely activated the outer gates, which swung inward to admit the vehicle.

Malko drove onto a small, sixty foot long stretch of road that lay between the outer and inner gates. The arrangement could have been mistaken for a modern-day barbican of sorts, since both sets of gates were designed to fully accommodate multiple vehicles between them when opening and closing. Rows of trees field the spaces between the two fences and more of them covered the grounds that lay ahead. Arriving at the east entrance to the stately mansion where she would drop off the letter, she parked the coupe against a white granite curb and carried a thin aluminum briefcase with her up a short flight of stairs. The doors leading into the east gallery were watched by two more royal guards whose neutral yet stern visages seemed to subtly induce nervousness in the minds of potential intruders. She walked past them without much thought, much as she had scores of times before.

The Ganosian invitation that Malko had delivered was addressed to the office of the social secretary, Nadia Nikolovna Orlov. Mrs. Orlov had shut the door of her office and was speaking on a telephone with somebody when Malko passed by. As a result of being occupied and in a position where she would not want to be disturbed, Orlov did not receive the letter immediately. Instead of placing it on Orlov’s desk, Malko placed it in Orlov’s mailbox in a room located adjacent to her office. Several minutes later she left the building with an empty case. Her work was done.

Mrs. Orlov eventually left her office around one o’clock and entered the mailroom to open up her box. The invitation sat atop a stack of eight other letters and a postcard, all of which she were on her desk so that the stack fell apart enough to reveal some of its contents. She opened up the invitation first, read through a few lines, and then stuffed it back into the envelope. This matter had to be brought to the personal attention of her superiors before the day ended.

Orlov made the minute long journey to the west end of the building with the letter sandwiched under her arm. She heard a butler at work cleaning up what remained of lunch several rooms away, so obviously she would not have to worry about His Majesty becoming too comfortable in his office just yet. She slipped around a corner and into a hallway with a pair of doors on her left, both of which led into offices. The doors nearest her led into the antechamber of the king’s office and were attended by a valet who was in the process of showing another person in. He recognized Orlov and simply waved her through the open doors, then shut them behind her.

Much like the antechamber of the queen’s office, the room that Orlov found herself inside had walls lined with beige alabaster up to waist height and topped off with a dado rail of black walnut inlaid with two gilded stripes. Several bergère chairs and a chaise lounge for weary or infirm visitors lined the walls, in addition to about a dozen life-sized portraits hanging on the walls and some ornate floor lamps. She took a seat and stared at the pair of heavy oaken doors that led into the king’s office to admire their workmanship. Few people in the palace were aware that the king had ordered a set of custom industrial stamps to press quarter-inch thick steel plates into the exact shape of the designs carved on the doors, had them plated in gold to march the original gilding of the wood, and then simply installed over them in order to reinforce the doors against any number of unpleasant possibilities. Security concerns were more prominent after the Corporate Alliance War in 2009 and 2010, though few things seemed to change because the changes were more psychological than material. People were simply more careful and observant than before.

Doctor Nathan Scribner, an economist who presently served as the Crown’s Economic Security Adviser, opened up one of the doors. “Mrs. Orlov, I’m surprised.”

“Good afternoon. I trust that you had an exciting briefing to deliver.”

“It was not that exciting—unless you love to sift through ten pages of graphs and tables. I needed to inform His Imperial Majesty of a few things that would factor into his address to the Ministry of Commerce this month.”

“It must be quite important then. I take it I’m free to enter.”

“Why not! It looks like you have something important to deliver as well.” The elderly Scribner brushed aside a shock of white hair that had slid out of position over his seventy-two-year-old face and left the antechamber.

Now that she was free to continue her work, Orlov knocked on the doors ahead of her. “Please enter,” a warmly-intoned voice replied. Orlov pushed the heavy door in and then shut it behind her.

“I wish Your Imperial Majesty a good afternoon,” she greeted the man before her, taking care to offer a bowing of her waist for effect. After rising back to her full height, she noticed that the king had drawn his body into an erect posture in his seat to the point that he nearly rose out of it. His charming habit of rising in respect to any ladies who entered a room had become the subject of a number of stories over the years.

Charles Petrović IX lost no time in moving on to what appeared to be the business at hand. “Mrs. Orlov, is there a conflict in our social schedule?” he asked, remembering a comment Orlov had made a week earlier about “early July being crowded with events.”

“No. It’s something new.”

“Is it that thing you have under your arm?” he asked intuitively.

“Yes,” Orlov replied as she handed him the letter.

Charles drew out the envelope’s contents and read through the invitation, his hazel eyes not taking any more than a few moments to examine everything. “This is quite a generous invitation,” the king explained. “The Ganosians have held several galas in the past, but I have never thought that they would invite foreign heads of state to an occasion like this. I believe I heard that the birthday of their empress is a state holiday, but I suppose they might have amended the law to accord the same honor to the children. Alternatively, this could be a convenient way of allowing old ties to be renewed and political business to be conducted in an ostensibly social setting rather than one that is openly political.”

“Does Your Majesty want to have me take this thing—”

“There is no need,” the king cut in, correctly anticipating Orlov’s question. “I will show this to my wife tonight. Right now she is preoccupied with business other than social engagements.”

Orlov nodded in assent and turned towards the doors. “Thank you, Mrs. Orlov,” the king added, “I will have a reply ready tonight.”

Royal Residence
Chalcedon, Monavia

Dinner was served that night in the royal family’s private dining room according to their usual routine. The first floor also contained a state dining room that was twice the size of the private one, but it was only used on formal occasions. Dinners were often used as a forum for presenting the day’s happenings and discussing a multitude of varied subjects. Politics was obviously a common theme, but academic discussions were also quite frequent and allowed the royal children to display the fruits of their education. Argumentation was as common in this room as comedic stories and reminiscences.

Seven places had been set to accommodate Elizabeth and Charles and their five children, all of whom happily assisted their parents in devouring an opening course of creamy spinach soup around seven-thirty, then moving their way down the night’s menu. It was shortly after eight o’clock that night when the king finally broached the subject of the gala, after the mountain of crab pastries that constituted the main course had collapsed under the butler’s concerted attack and been distributed to everybody. “There is one more subject that must be addressed in rather short order,” he began. “This afternoon I received a message from Mrs. Orlov. The Ganosians are holding another one of their famous celebrations.”

The king’s oldest daughter, twenty-two-year-old Princess Catherine, was the first to begin asking questions. “What occasion are they celebrating?”

“The Empress of Ganosia bore quintuplets around nine or ten years ago and their birthday is approaching. The birthday of the empress is a national holiday under their laws and so it is only fitting that something be done in honor of her progeny.”

“Should we send them a gift basket?” Catherine’s younger brother Nicholas asked.

“Our family was invited to the party,” Charles replied. “Why be such a miserly spoilsport when you can enjoy it for yourself?” The question was merely rhetorical but it had achieved the desired effect. Prince Nicholas might have entertained reservations about making journey as long as the one to Ganosia with only a few days of notice, but now his interest has been stimulated. There was a potential for dozens of foreign cultures to be represented there and he would be able to see bits of other countries along the way. He especially wanted to visit Lamoni again after being there two years earlier, but his plans would have to wait a little longer.

“What else did the invitation specify?” Catherine queried.

“The party is open to not only this family family but other high officials and their families as well.”

The queen’s deep green eyes seemed to sparkle with delight as an epiphany suddenly sprang into her mind. “Charles, perhaps we should extend the invitation to His Excellency the Chancellor and Her Ladyship,” she offered, making a reference to the chancellor’s wife in the process.

“I like it. After all, he could use the break to bolster his spirits.”

Seventeen-year-old Svetlana Sophia Petrović, the third oldest child, was now interested in the party. “Does Chancellor Hanover’s presence there have anything to do with his campaign to be re-elected?” she inquired. “I know it’s difficult to run for any office, but the chancellorship is always an especially fierce contest.”

“It probably will,” the queen replied. “You know what the Crown represents, correct?”

“Any monarch represents his or her country at diplomatic functions.”

“That is true; however, political scholars are usually astute enough to account for a simple but important technicality—the Crown ultimately represents the Empire’s government—that is, we represent the institution that administers the country. Chancellor Hanover, on the other hand, is the voice of the country’s populace, and his presence means that somebody drawn out of the total sum of the common people is also present.”

“How does that help him at all with his re-election?” Svetlana probed further.

“Being part of an international meeting of goodwill and friendship is a convenient way for him to add another feather to his cap—though after ten years in office and countless minor achievements, I would think that he wears a goose down pillow on his head by now.” Prince Nicholas cracked a smile as he attempted to restrain any giggles from leaving his half-filled mouth. He had a witty mother after all.

“I think father’s original point regarding the chancellor was directed at more personal matters. As he said, the man needs a vacation as badly as anybody.”

“If that’s the case, then shouldn’t we also invite Minister Carter along? He always enjoys traveling and conducting diplomacy.”

“George, I’ll call him tonight. He’ll have to be amenable to buying gifts for the children, however. Nobody is going there without bringing something.” The fifteen-year-old twin princes Andrew and George were both attentive to their mother’s words. They were the only example of a multiple birth in the royal family in the last thirty years and commanded an especial favor from their parents by being the youngest of their children.

The family talked about the gala through the rest of the meal and were still contemplating gift ideas after the last of the dessert had been eaten up. Catherine, Nicholas, and Svetlana would be attending because of their age and open schedules. Andrew and George were not overly young for any such engagement, but they still had a few things to learn about the etiquette and the nuances of social interactions that were appropriate for this type of function. Furthermore, they were still slightly impetuous as a result of their age and had yet to develop their sense of discretion enough to handle some of the socially awkward situation that might arise whenever so many different sets of customs and cultures interacted in one place.

Tomorrow they would start shopping for gifts.

Replies accepting the invitation were sent out by the royal family, Chancellor Hanover and his wife Lady Margaret Hanover, and Minister Frank Carter and his wife Lady Pauline Carter. Packing and shopping occupied much of the day, but soon enough a veritable treasure trove of gifts had been assembled by the evening.

King Charles acquired a set of platinum hair combs with fine engraving and filigree as gifts for the girls, in addition to a set of matching brushes. Erica, Dorothy, and Katherine would also be receiving a set of silver-framed jewelry caskets made from rosewood panels and lined inside with silken upholstery. Jakob and Felix Junior would each be receiving sets of fountain pens with rhodium nibs and lacquered ebony cases. He also bought a set of brass binoculars for the boys to share among themselves.

Queen Elizabeth went one step further than her husband by handpicking fifty compact discs containing classical Monavian music and assembling the set in a lacquered CD storage case. This gift was meant for Empress Quinn. The queen also acquired gold proof sets of Monavian coinage for each of the children, then picked up stylish pillbox hats and matching hatboxes for Erica, Dorothy, and Katherine. Felix Junior and Jakob received mother-of-pearl cuff links and tie bars.

Princesses Catherine and Svetlana purchased pearl bracelets in three different colors (green, pink, and cream) for the girls on a trip to Buckley’s, a store made as famous by the purchases made buy its more prominent customers as it was by its sizeable advertising budget. Boxes of chocolate also managed to sneak into the gift list, as did a book of songs, ornate silken shawls to wear in drafty rooms, and several albums of contemporary Monavian music. Svetlana carefully selected a pair of black hats for Jakob and Felix Junior to wear at their leisure and a miniature globe surfaced with gemstones.

Chancellor Hanover made a trip to Barclay and Lowry Clothiers to purchase overcoats for all of the children. Ganosia’s high latitude location in northern Gholgoth made for a cold winter climate and sooner or later the royal quintuplets would need them. Lady Hanover purchased pocket watches for the boys at Buckley’s a few hours later. She was rather modest in her selections because she was uncertain of what would be the appropriate amount of gifts to bring, not to mention her concern over possibly upstaging any foreign dignitaries by bringing in anything too lavish. She bought a bronze desktop sculpture of a horse galloping over a field for Crown Princess Erica and sets of malachite bookends for Katherine and Dorothy.

Prince Nicholas decided to bring a fine chess set for the quintet of children to share when they needed amusement. He picked up two more board games for them to go with it so that they would have more than one new source of entertainment.

Last of all were the Carters. Lady Pauline Carter acquired a sapphire pendant for the Empress as a personal gift to her, in addition to a book of poems about motherhood and familial ties. She wrapped up a copy of Hurley’s Handbook of Rhetoric and addressed it to Jakob, then took a copy of A Brief Encyclopedia of Political Science in One Volume and wrote Felix Junior’s name on an attached card. Frank chose to handle the three princesses and bought each of them a small mahogany stationery case with geometric parquetry inlay. All in all, none of the Ganosian royal children would be receiving raw deals.

Present day

Airfield
Olyan
Pansentient Empire of Ganosia

The aircraft bearing the Monavian guests landed in Olyan after completing a lengthy journey that included stops in Lamoni, the Western Azumethronnian Imperiate, and the Nineteen United Provinces of Yohannes. The trip had exhausted both of the air crews who had rotated between every stop in order to make the flight less grueling, but there was not a soul aboard the plane who did not want to escape its confined quarters after landing.

Once the craft had stopped moving so that a staircase could be wheeled into place, the front starboard door was opened to admit several members of the crew to disembark and roll out a short length of carpet at the base of the stairs. Once this was done, a procession of forty-four men wearing the uniform of the Royal Guard started filing outside and forming ranks on either side of the carpet. Second Lieutenant Charles Palatnik commanded the platoon-sized honor guard that was present to conduct the formalities that came with the arrival of Monavian royalty and other officials.

Lieutenant Palatnik drew a ceremonial sword out of a scabbard hanging against his side and held it aloft, calling out the traditional commands associated with the honor guard ceremony. “Platoon…present arms!” he enunciated as the unit lifted up its rifles and shouldered them before allowing them to lean inward. The bolt-action weapons they sported on this occasion were decorated with nickel finishes and built with lacquered wood stocks—obviously they were meant to be showy in any instance. Palatnik’s second-in-command, Staff Sergeant First Class Boris Topich, stood to one side with the colors of the battalion to which the honor guard belonged.

The royal couple exited the craft first, walking down the stairs with the same effortless motions that they had made so many times in the past. Palatnik could not help but divert his gaze towards the majestic processional that followed as the others followed. He had served as commander of a smaller security detail in Wagdog when Minister Carter had attended an antislavery conference being held in Tailville over a year ago. Now he saw Carter appear in the same ivory-colored dress shirt and charcoal gray tailcoat, vest, and trousers he had worn the previous time. Lady Carter was not a sedate sight herself, having donned a flowing green dress and emerald necklace that refracted every glint of light it caught and seemed to glimmer every which way as she moved.

After everybody had left the craft and some people were conscripted to carry the gifts to the vehicles which would be transporting the Monavians to the party, Palatnik unbuckled his sword and handed it to Topich along with his sidearm. He then turned over responsibility for guarding the Monavians to the ranking Ganosian secret service agent present and accompanied the others to the ball.

Shortly after leaving the airport where they had first arrived, a set of vehicles bearing the Monavians and their gifts pulled up in front of the palace that Empress Quinn and her family used as their residence. One by one they filed out and entered, being mindful to ensure that the gifts were brought inside without any accidents or undue difficulty.

Chancellor Hanover was the first person to walk through the front doors and into the building. He and the other men from Monavia all took advantage of a fashion custom that was mostly homegrown and had emerged as a result of generations of frustration with the rigid dress codes imposed by outsiders. Monavians had historically made do with things like white tie and black tie attire, but both were governed by rules that forced every man, civilian or military, to wear some arbitrary uniform with almost no room for error or leeway. Monavians had dispensed with requiring such dress in many social settings, substituting a new code that prescribed a dress shirt with French cuffs and a three-piece suit consisting of matched trousers, vest, and tailcoat with a matching bowtie. Hats were optional but everything had to be in complementary colors that did not clash. This new code was far more liberal than what some would have expected from Monavian fashion, which was noted for its conservatism and slowness to change on one hand and modesty on the other. The Ganosian invitations had not mentioned any particular dress code, so the Monavians took full advantage of their liberty.

Chancellor Hanover was attired in a deep gray suit with ivory pinstripes that had the same evening dress cut as Carter’s and was otherwise quite similar to what the latter wore. The five boxes containing the overcoats he had bought for the children were being carried by one of the valets who was helping shuttle guests to the party. This assistance enabled Hanover to easily doff his bowler hat and hand it to the doorman, who soon found himself busy as more objects started coming into his possession.

Minister Carter, ever the patrician, walked abreast of the chancellor with a dressy lacquered cane at his side. The shaft of the ornate cane had been carved from aged walnut root and shaped on a lathe, then topped off by a leather handgrip and octagonal gold cap. It actually contained a straight-bladed sword that had been concealed with the deftest precision by the master craftsman who was commissioned to produce it. The leather cover on the handle was meant to keep the user’s grip from slipping if it had to be used as a weapon while the cap was really a weighted tungsten pommel covered with a gold-plated steel shell. Carter tipped his hat to the doorman as he entered and handed it to him. “Please put this in a safe place,” he nonchalantly instructed the doorman as he gave him the cane. The doorman was left none the wiser regarding its true nature.

Prince Nicholas carried his gifts inside and doffed the hat that crowned his closely-combed jet black hair. He cut an impressive figure as he strode inside the foyer in his navy blue suit and canary yellow dress shirt, both of which could still be seen poking out from behind the three boxes of games he carried. Once he set them down by the door so that the valet could pick them up, he straightened out the yellow pocket square and ceremonial sash he was wearing. He had been awarded the sash of robin-egg blue moiré fabric on his eighteenth birthday, which was the traditional occasion for princes to officially come of age in the social world. Ever observant of the fine architecture around him and the increasingly large crowds of people, most of whom were Ganosian at the moment, he allowed his light green eyes to scan the room and the spaces around it.

For her part, Princess Catherine needed no assistance from valets or the doorman in making her entrance. Her smashingly lissome frame, with its six foot, one inch stature, was unbowed and unencumbered by heavy boxes. She carried several gift bags for the Ganosian children that swung sedately in her hands while her ankle-length indigo dress fluttered behind her. She had been careful not to wear anything that glided on the floor or obscured her two-inch heeled shoes, lest her appearance appear overly prudish and old-fashioned or end up caught on some piece of furniture. She had braided her shoulder-length walnut brown hair into an elaborate pattern and secured it with an amethyst pin, then clasped a white belt around her waist for show. To complete her look, she wore one of her favorite platinum necklaces—a wide one that resembled a constellation of purple stars. The piece was particularly special to her because a portion of the three hundred carats of flawless amethysts that were mounted in it were donated from her cousin’s mineral collection.

Svetlana accompanied her older sister inside with additional gift bags in hand. She was her mother’s height—two inches shorter than Catherine—and was less athletically built than the queen, yet she was far from unimposing and could turn heads as well as any of her siblings. An azure blue cocktail dress with matching elbow-length gloves served as the perfect complement to her flowing towheaded locks, which she had pinned in place to keep them from flowing over her shoulders or into her face whenever she moved around. High-heeled azure shoes, golden hairclips set with several colors of sapphires, and an assortment of other jewelry sparkled in the glittering light of Empress Quinn’s palace.

Lady Hanover and Lady Carter stayed towards the rear of the group. The former wanted to convey the image that the wife of a chancellor was still a powerful personage who could command dignity and yet retain a celebrity status if she chose. Having adorned her slim, petite frame with a tailored ballroom dress of bright red satin, she seemed to appear as the very embodiment of middle-aged vitality. Bold as she was already, she could not refrain from showing off her favorite ruby-colored cocktail hat—let alone the gifts that she had bought. Another poor valet was stuck toting around the desktop statue, bookends, watches, and other objects that she had packed into a box that weighed close to forty pounds.

Lady Carter glanced behind her to catch a glimpse of Palatnik, who was escorting the royal couple inside. Palatnik had relieved one of the valets of several packages, using his great strength to effortlessly haul in several more packages. Carter had decided to follow Princess Svetlana’s suggestion to wear a cocktail dress instead of something with a lower hemline as it would allow her to visually mesh better with the younger attendees, especially if photographs were to be taken of the event. “Catherine can go dress like she is already in her thirties if she wants,” Svetlana said earlier on the plane. Carter took the suggestion to heart, putting on one of her dresses of green silk that comfortably fit the form of her waist and lower torso while hugging her shoulders from behind.

Lieutenant Palatnik brought up the rear and stepped behind the royal couple so that guests would be able to admire their appearance before he upstaged them in the finery of his ceremonial dress uniform. He smiled at the scenery as much as anybody else, almost feeling at home as the fine materials used to create the architectural masterpiece where the Ganosian Empress resided began to remind him of his haunts in Chalcedon. Palatnik brushed aside some hairs that had strayed out from under his peaked cap. I thought I had sprayed those in place. They must have hidden under the top surface and received no adhesion. That’s what happens when your hair still remains thick at my age.

Her Imperial Majesty Elizabeth VI, Queen Coregent of Monavia and possessor of scores of other titles, had decided that the best way to make a favorable impression on other guests was to appear in good spirits and act generously towards the children of her hostess. She opted to flaunt the strength of her musculature by wearing a knee-length dress of platinum-gray fabric that was draped in flowing folds across her body. Long, toned arms that protruded from the short-sleeved dress hinted at her physical prowess, whether in a garden where she wrestled with stubborn plants older than her parents or on the tennis court where she seemed to duel formidable opponents. Her silvery heeled shoes clicked in evenly-timed intervals as she measured out her steps the way she would in a procession. She needed to only beam at her husband for a moment, allowing the radiance of her eyes to meet with the fire in his for them to entertain thoughts of moonlit walks in the country.

Elizabeth reached to her side and clasped Charles’ hand in hers, looking off as the others fanned out inside the ballroom. King Charles had outdone himself this time, dressing completely in white. His vest and tailcoat were incredibly bright as is without their moonstone-inlaid buttons, but stopping there would have been seen as an incomplete effort. Onlookers knew not whether to start with his hat or his shoes, his massive golden signet ring or the fancy straight cane he walked with for show. Several medals hung from the left side of his chest where a silver-gray pocket square jutted out on a diagonal as if it were peeking out from behind a hiding place. A wide sash like the one worn by his son Nicholas, hung across his front, though he was in good company—a white sash of almost equal size but bearing a different set of ornamentation at its base was draped over Elizabeth in a similar position.

Sorry if this post is a bit, well, terrible. I'm writing it while sick in bed.

The trip to Ganosia had been a long one.

Although the President didn't take his usual jet - instead favouring one of the new supersonic airliners that had been 'donated' by R-Sky Enterprises - the flight was still nearly 18 hours long. Such was the problem with living in a nation that took 9 hours to traverse by air - leaving the Radiatian Federation was hard enough on its own, let alone the immense journey that had to be undertaken to arrive in the region of Gholgoth.

The President, Yerkal Nathus, relaxed on the flight with his former bodyguard, now husband Teodor Lacy, the two of them drinking champagne that was originally intended for consumption at the Gala, until one of the more observant aides reminded them that it was a kids birthday party, not a cocktail party.

"Enjoy it while it lasts, Teodor." Said Yerkal.

"Don't worry. Unlike some people in this aircraft, I happen to know how to drink sensibly." Said Teodor.

"I don't mean the champagne," Intoned the President. "I mean the lifestyle."

"Yeah I know. They elected a Conservative government, which means budget cuts for us, right?"

"Not just that." Said Nathus, watching the bubbles in his champagne flute float lazily to the top and break. "The thing is... I can't be the President forever. It's just a glorified management position."

"Are you... serious?" Asked Teodor.

"Yeah," Said the President. "Once Soden Larssen settles in as Prime Minister, I'll announce my resignation. I'll stay around until the mid-term elections but after that... well someone else can have a turn being the Head of State."

"I don't know how to feel about that," Said Teodor Lacy. "On one hand... well... at least I'll be getting you all to myself."

"We could adopt some children." Said the President with a smile.

"Yes!" Said Teodor. "Although, if you think I'm moving up north to Polaris with you, you have another thing coming. I do not want to live in the arctic!"

"Then let's drink to it." Said the President, and the two clinked their glasses together.

Shortly before disembarking from the aircraft, the President's four guards had attempted to leave the plane in full RSEF uniform, while carrying submachine guns.

"Oh no you don't!" Said the President. "It's a children's party. You look more like a vanguard party."

The guards then had to hastily change into tuxedos and make themselves look presentable.

The President looked them up and down and nodded, allowing them to lead him outside once he had made sure that were unarmed.

"I'm gonna guess that the clause of the constitution saying I have to have four guards at all times was written by Derro Vahnsehn," He said, more than a little annoyed at the fact that everywhere he went he had to have these men following him.

He stepped out onto the tarmac and took a deep breath - something he always liked to do in foreign countries, given Radiatia's shoddy-to-non-existant environmental record.

In spite of all the flag-waving pomp and ceremony that was no doubt sweeping across Ganosia at that very moment, it was not without some sort of irony that the first thing Yerkal Nathus saw upon entering the Pansapient Empire was actually the black and gold shape of his own nation's flag - flying above a Greasy Joe's® at the airport.

"Oh god... they're everywhere." He muttered to Teodor. "For everything that the Radiatian Federation has to offer the world... Greasy Joe's had to be the one thing that made it big on the world stage."

"That's not true. Apparently we're also famous for our mail-order brides." Said Teodor.

"Really? What the hell am I the President of?"

"Don't worry about it, Yerkal. Or am I to call you Mr. President seeing as this is a formal occasion?"

The President smiled. "I believe the correct term now is 'Your Excellency'."

Teodor snorted.

"Don't laugh! It wasn't my idea!" Said the President.

"Of course... Your Excellency." Said Teodor mockingly. "You are aware you're going to be speaking to proper royals today aren't you? I mean people whose titles actually mean something and weren't made up 6 months ago by an act of parliament?"

"Yeah... I'm actually nervous." Nathus confessed. "These people have been born and bred to rule all their lives. And what am I? The son of an ice-fisherman from Polaris."

"Yes, you are. And you're also considered the most intelligent man in Radiatia. And that's why the Federal Council appointed you to the role of President."

"Mmm..."

Teodor worried a little, as the normally happy-go-lucky President stared at the ground in silence.

Although he was attending the gala as a head of state, both he and Teodor knew that the trip to Ganosia was to get away from all the stress at home - for the last few weeks, due to the election season, the President had been doing the job of the Prime Minister and Cabinet himself, which was not something he felt comfortable or qualified doing.

"So tell me," Said Teodor as they entered the limouzine which had been supplied by the Radiatian embassy. "What do we have to do with Ganosia anyway?"

"Diplomatically... not much. But Ganosia has the highest number of Radiatians in the world, outside of Radiatia. So I might as well pay them a visit."

Indeed, on the way there they had passed one of the famous (or infamous) "Radiatia-towns" which had been springing up all over the empire.

Yerkal Nathus felt a weird mixture of pride and shame - pride at how Radiatia had made itself known on the world stage, but shame at the way in which Radiatia had made itself known, as he watched a hooker outside Greasy Joe's propositioning the drivers passing cars.

"What about their culture?" Asked Teodor.

"Well... from what I know of Ganosia... Imagine that in the 1950s the fascists had won the civil war instead of the communists. If that had happened then Radiatia today would probably be a lot like Ganosia."

"Wait... we're in a fascist country?"

"No, no! They're a monarchy, but... look can't we forget politics for a while?"

"I'm just not sure about..."

"As your President I hereby order you to forget about politics and just have some fun."

The limouzine pulled up. They had arrived.

Miss Janelle Hippy had finally arrived in Ganosia, with some odd looks directed her way by the man who had examined her diplomatic passport. Assuming that it had something to do with her last name, Janelle shrugged it off as she brought her luggage with her, and was met by a member of the Lamonian embassy in Olyan, who would drive her to the Gala.

It didn't take long to arrive at the palace, where she went through the security measures in place, once again sighing at the moral bankruptcy that would allow one human being to think that they were superior to another human being. In this reaction to Ganosia and everything Ganosia related, Miss Hippy was not alone, as it was a fairly common Lamonian reaction to the words of Thomas Hobbes, and other such absolute monarchists as served as inspirations to the Ganosians. Though there had only been one marriage of a Lamonian with a Ganosian, that particular marriage seemed to be controversial to both sides. A fine upstanding Lamonian Berserker marrying a Ganosian General? That way of life would never be for her.

Finally passing through the security checks, Janelle headed for the back of the room, looking to observe how the monarchists would (to her mind) try to expand their one-person domination of other humans.

Location: Ganosia - Some airport. Time: Afternoon.
The Vecerian delegation arrived late. Very late.

"Next time I'll take another pilot", David whispered to himself as he rushed down the extended stairway of his private jet, accompanied by his wife and the Citadel Agent who volunteered to be their guard. "As if I need guards anyway", the King continued to whisper, thinking about the debate he had with his wife. The wind had gotten a little bit chilly, and the sun was already trying to hide behind some of the higher towers of the airport, but David didn't really care anymore, as his son, Felix appeared in the doorway of the nearby entrance. "Felly!" Alya had been faster than her husband, already sprinting towards her son, hugging him rather roughly. "Mum - please - not in front of the other people - I'm not only your son, I'm also some kind of King here, you know?" He laughed and shook his fathers hand as he offered it, winking at his commiserative sighing. "Long time no see, son. Hope those Ganosians feed you good." Felix grinned as his father finished his sentence, and nodded in reply. "They do, even if I get those special stuff less often than back home." He opened the door for his parents and their escort and led them to a large, armored limousine. "Ah, now I know why you imported some of our stuff. Nice K-C you got there. Tuned or still vanilla edition?" As usual, Alya was they one speaking about the car - David wasn't really interested in such stuff as long as the vehicle moved and could withstand a direct hit by high-caliber rounds. "Nah, tuned of course. The usual stuff." Agent Page observed their surroundings while the royal family took their seats in the limousine, boarding the vehicle last. The driver started the motor, and finally, they were on their way to their next destination - The palace.

Location: Ganosia - Quinn's Palace. Time: Late afternoon.
The car finally stopped in front of the big palace, right next to some of the palace's guards. Felix waved at them and opened the door for his parents, while Agent Page opened the door herself and positioned herself next to the car. "Nice palace you got there. Didn't change much since the last time we were here." "On the outside, dad. On the inside - well, you already know my wife." David giggled, but stopped as he noticed the guards. The looked ... more official, not that plain like the Vecerian royal guards. "Nice uniforms you have there." David giggled again as the guards tried not to react to his comment. "Dad, let them be. C'mon, let's get inside the building." The four Vecerians - well, three Vecerians and a Ganosian-Vecerian - slowly walked up to the entrance, passing some more guards without any inspection due to Felix' presence. "I hope your wife isn't asleep yet, Felly." Felix shook his head. " Nah, I don't think so - and if she is ... well, I don't think she'll kill me if I wake her up." He walked up to one of the servants standing nearby and told her to tell Quinn that they - the Vecerians - were here now. "At least I hope she won't kill me." Felix commented jokingly.

Dukes Gustav and Valeria Meier und Sigmarinen and their daughter Elizabetta entered into the ballroom. Recently appointed ambassador in Ganosia of the Dual Kingdom of Osberg-Thitania, this was the first major event Duke Gustav was attending, and he hoped it would serve to begin to establish solid ties with the local nobility and officials.

Aged sixty-five, and coming from one of the most prestigious noble houses of the Dual Kingdom, Gustav Meier und Sigmarinen was the archetypical osberg-thitanian noble, whose mentality had not experienced any change since he left the active service in the military twenty-five years ago. He had a bald-round face, complemented with a monocle and a well groomed walrus moustache, and for the occasion he was wearing a suit with a black frock coat, the green, white and red ambassador band crossing it, and his chest displaying the numerous medals and ribbons product of his military career.

Her wife Valeria was aged thirty-five. Duke Gustav had married her after tragic death of his first wife, which partially explained the notorious difference of age between the two. She was a is a magnificent exemplar of thitanian woman, with tanned skin and a raven black mane. Osberg-Thitanian formal fashion had changed little since the end of the XIX century, as that was apparent in her dress: emerald green with black accents, buttoned to her neck and with a long skirt with a bustle. Her black air was combed into a elaborate topknot, held in place with a silver brooch crafted in the form of a swan. A silver necklace that hold a cross made with silver and emeralds complemented her ensemble.

Lastly, Elizabetta was the daughter of Duke Gustav and his first wife. With a presence that rivaled with her stepmother, she was the archetypical osbergian beauty, with fair skin, blue eyes a golden hair. Her dress had the same cut that Valeria´s, but Elizabetta had chosen a less sober combination of red with white accents. Her hair was weaved into a tress and adorned with a ruby brooch, and another ruby hang from the choker in her neck.

The three of them carried the five mahogany little boxes that contained their present for the Imperial Quintuplets: books dedicated to the life and miracles of each of their patron saints, crafted, written and illustrated by hand by the monks to the San Bernardino Abbey in Thitania.

Ganos Lao wrote:Eventually the Empress noticed Michelson was heading towards her children, so she intercepted him, like a mother bear whenever her children were noticed by strangers.

"You must be one of the foreign attendees. I am the Empress of Ganosia," she said, interrupting him."

The Elected Monarch was caught off guard by the Empress of Ganosia's sudden approach, he was more focused on how to congratulate the quintuplets at the time, sitting at one of the many tables in the large ballroom. Erik replied with a short silence, the figurative gears in his mind whirring frantically searching for the correct non-verbal greeting A handshake maybe? No, might not be politically correct, what about a bow? He bowed low to the empress, Probably better to be submissive to the leader of a nation that might see Remad as little more then a smudge on the map he thought, hoping he was taking all of the correct social clues.
"Yes, I am the Elected Monarch of Remad, Erik Michelson. I was wondering if I may congratulate your children on their collective birthday?" He immediately regretted saying it. Did I come of looking like a threat? I hope not. The fate of Remad might depend on it. Shit.

Captain Latte unfastened the lock of the wooden crate they had lugged from Remad, placed the lock on the ground next to the crate and opened the lid just a crack. Light spilled in, illuminating the present's glemming exterior, he slowly reached his hand inside and rubbed his hand on it's shining brass, it's shape distorting his smiling, bearded face enough to make his smile even larger, and his beard comically long.
"These Ganosians are gonna enjoy our surprise present, I know it" He said quietly, his smile growing larger. He closed the crate, reattached the lock and reentered the festivities, he could see Michelson was trapped by the Empress of Ganosia, and Nourge was milling around, like a true dinner-party diplomat.
"May I interest you in some food, Sir?" A masculine waiter asked, waiting patiently for a response,
"Depends" Replied Latte with a sneer "Do you Ganosian make good spirits?"
"Of coarse" The waiter replied instantaneously, and placed a small glass filled with a clear fluid in Latte's hand, turned away and walked quickly towards another group of visitors. To Remad He thought before downing the entire glass, it's contents burning his throat as they traveled down, causing his eyes to well up slightly. He decided that he should stick to what he knew in the world of foreign food and drink tonight, He coughed once and walked on, He was on the watch for some waiter or other personal to alert of the present and the Elected Monarch's wishes to produce it directly to the quintuplets and their family, and to take his glass, also.

"NT-1" was a commercial airline flight to Ganos Lao. The economy and business class sections were full of normal travellers for their sections, but first-class had been set aside completely for the use of Prime Minister Evan Isaci and his party.

Normally, the Prime Minister used a small private jet set aside for his use, but Isaci wanted to keep his arrival in Ganos Lao as low key as possible. It wasn't the duty of the Prime Minister to attend functions such as the birthday party of Ganos Lao's imperial quintuplets --- that duty usually went to Emperor Nicolai di-Amori.

There was one problem though: unlike his predecessor, Emperor Nicolai was very rough around the edges with people. He had been picked to rule because his father thought Nicolai would be the most intelligent, diplomatic and sensible. Vincentius was wrong. Although the most intellectual of his siblings, Nicolai was anything but sensible, especially for peaceful situations involving other countries. The decision was made that the Emperor would probably not be the best candidate for greeting children.

And so Evan Isaci was told to represent his country on the international stage.

With him was Maresha Clerton: Evan's girlfriend. Maresha was only 29 years old --- young enough to be the daughter of 60-year old Evan. Maresha held no government office: she came along with Evan because she was better with children and could help Evan remain politicially correct and well-mannered.

Evan certainly didn't look 60. Years of military service had given Evan strength, and he looked 50 years of age at worst. Despite this, age was just starting to show --- Evan had shrunk half an inch over the last year. His hands, face, and neck had slight wrinkles to them. His black hair was turning gray and thin. More worrisome: he was starting to develop a very faint tremor in his hands when he tried to do certain tasks, like typing, turning pages, or even holding a cup.

Maresha smiled and wrapped both her arms around Evan's right shoulder and upper arm.

"I'm really excited for this, sweetheart. I can't believe you're taking me out of the country to go and see all these important people!"

Evan smiled calmly and let Maresha cuddle up against his arm.

"Well, I can do diplomacy...but I'm not good with kids. You're a good candidate to help me with that. I don't want to be that strange old man."

Maresha laughed. "No, Evan, you're just fine for me..."

She paused and blushed a little. "Quintuplets. Must have been one heck of a pregnancy!"

Evan laughed. "Yes. Talk about being blessed with fertility. Must  be interesting to have kids. Too bad I'm an old coot. I suspect if I were younger when I met that I might be a father myself."

Maresha shook her head. "No, I'm sure you're great father material. Even at 60. I'm quite sure."

Evan raised an eyebrow. "What makes you so sure about that?"

"Well you remind me of my own father! And you're very kind, Evan. You're a bit awkward at times, but you're sweet when you want to be, and you're certainly good at keeping discipline with other people."

"I suppose. Oh well. It's too late now to lament. I had a late start and it cost me."

Maresha smiled. "You know...it's not too late."

Evan shook his head. "I'm not even considering matrimony with you, let alone children."

"Wh-why in the world not?!"

"It's not you." Evan sighed and turned his head away out the window. "You're 30 years younger than me. If I married you, you'd spend much of your life as a widow. I can't help but find some aversion to that fact."

"At least this way, when I'm dead, you won't be strapped down by the mourning customs that widows and widowers in our country face."

"And as for children...if you gave birth tomorrow, I'd be 76 when that child became an adult. I don't even want to think about that."

He turned back to Maresha and pulled her head to his neck and chest, hugging her a bit. She had started off as an object of lust to him --- but overtime he became protective and genuine towards her in his feelings.

Maresha sighed. "It's just that...you're away all the time and busy and I'm lonely. And I was looking forward to this because...I thought it might get you prepared for the idea?"

Evan smiled. "Lonely, eh? Be warned I still don't like the idea of widowing you at a young age. This isn't a yes, by the way. I'll think about it, Maresha."

The plane continued on its destination to Ganos Lao.

Evan and Maresha, along with one unarmed guard (who was only around because of a clause on the law books that stated that a guard had to be around) soon got off the plane and made their way to the palace in Ganos Lao: Maresha and the guard carrying gifts for the children that had been purchased just before the group left Nui-ta.

"No, thank you."

Kaiser Steinbach declined the offer curtly, not even hazarding a glance down at the servant.
Being six feet and one inch tall, the Kaiser found it easy to ignore those he deemed unworthy to talk to him. Annoying servants, admiring heads of state, and other horribly necessary people that he might wish to dismiss with a short statement and a nod.

"I need a drink, Margete, but I fear these Ganosians do not have the best alcohol."

His wife turned toward him, still clasping his arm.

"You'll have to venture out and try a glass of what appears to be champagne, husband. You seem parched."

"I am, I am. I would much prefer a beer, however."

"I know you would - I would as well."

He looked down at her softly. The Kaiser was a hard, rather unfeeling man, conditioned by military discipline and his own personality. His wife was one of the extremely few people he was not rather aloof with - she was most certainly the only one he ever dared to show any trace of emotion to.

" 'Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world.' " he said with a smile, quoting one of his predessecors, Wilhelm II.

"You're halfway there."

She looked up at him and gave him a peck on the lips, almost unnoticeable to anyone unless they happened to be staring at them - which was every once in a while, the case.
He closed his eyes as her lips touched his, reveling in the knowledge of being loved by the black-haired woman in beside him.

"We simply must go see one of the other royals here, husband. It would not do to simply sit around and eat and drink, avoiding everyone's company like you tend to do."

"I, madame? I? Why, I am one of the most sociable men I know!" he said playfully.

"Yes, your circle of one or two other dictators and kings are quite the extensive collection."

He smiled, and wrapped his hands around her waist.

"You always manage to make me laugh in the most inappropriate circumstances."

"And you I."

They held their smile for several seconds, staring into each other's eyes. His hands slid farther, now reaching her lower back.

"Now, now, we mustn't do this here. You distracted me again. You are the King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, a Kaiser among presidents," she said, raising her arms to brush the single speck of dust off his tight-chested coat, "Act the part. Let us go find some powerful head of state to make small-talk with - perhaps you will actually like one of them."

"That, I highly doubt, Margete," he said, removing his arms from her waist, "But we can try I suppose.
Ah, servant!"

He stopped a woman on her way past him and removed a glass of champagne from her tray, nodding for her dismissal once he had attained the champagne.

"Now, we are ready." he said, taking a small sip of the weak (for him) liquid.

"Who shall we attempt to mingle with, my love?" she said, fingering her necklace, set with several large green emeralds encased in pure silver.

He looked around. The Elected Monarch of Remad seemed occupied with the Empress. Several other heads of state and entourage had entered the building, and the quintuplets, the cause of this gala, were sitting at a table at the other end of the room.

"Hmm. The rulers of Monavia appear to have arrived. The State of Monavia, a powerful nation if I have ever seen one - and I have. Let us approach them."

They made their way to the front of the group, stopping just before the two men at the front.

"Prince Nicholas and Chancellor Hanover, I presume?"

The Kaiser did a slight bow from the neck - he wished to show acknowledgement of the men's rank, but was by no means going to compromise his own importance.
I don't care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do.
The question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it. ― William S. Burroughs

Remad wrote:The Elected Monarch was caught off guard by the Empress of Ganosia's sudden approach, he was more focused on how to congratulate the quintuplets at the time, sitting at one of the many tables in the large ballroom.
Shit.

Out of the corner of her eye had Quinn seen that Felix had finally arrived. She wasn't mad, but she felt slightly disappointed in him. Nonetheless, she intended to welcome him as soon as she finished with this gentleman from Remad, wherever that was. The Empress of the Ganosians loved her man dearly and to not have him around had often generated wounds across her heart. But she knew he loved his family back home in Veceria, a rather nice country in her opinion, so she did not dare to question him on his loyalties.

"You are free to do so," the Empress said to Michelson. "But I would do so before they split up and scatter themselves - they're quite hard to keep up with sometimes, but that's what makes raising children fun sometimes, right?"

The Empress smiled shortly. She had never distanced herself from motherhood. That was her sister's domain.

Veceria wrote:He walked up to one of the servants standing nearby and told her to tell Quinn that they - the Vecerians - were here now. "At least I hope she won't kill me." Felix commented jokingly.

Quinn decided it would be best to circumvent the servant by approaching Felix herself - with a rather tight embrace that seemed to mask the slight disappointment in him, which was thrust upon him with a subtle whispering in his ear not to deprive her of his presence again. Besides, she wanted him to see the children, who upon noticing that their father had arrived, all went to greet him with unanimous tenderness. They loved him, and asked him what gifts had he brought for them from Veceria. Quinn chuckled and told them that they should let their father rest because Mom wanted to talk to him privately. The lure of more gifts from other guests persuaded them to disperse and Quinn looked at him tenderly - her pretty eyes locking with his in a moment of clarity.

:You're late, but I guess it was for a good cause," Quinn teased. "You should go give your parents' gifts to the kids. They're probably anxious to see what their father's got each of them."

Quinn knew that Vecerian blood did not solely flow in the veins of her children. Her brother Raymond had his own Vecerian spouse - Vecerians were also around the arms of Princess Lilith and other Ganosians, royal and lesser citizen alike.

"The gala's so far been quite good," Quinn said. "The Riemaians and a couple of others have arrived. Those Riemaians haven't gotten silly like they usually do, though, but I guess that's because they're not of the casts of those Riemaian comedy skits Lance showed me."

She giggled as she led Felix around the ballroom, proud that he was the father of her children, her dear husband. Of course, she didn't forget his parents. She went up to them both and personally welcomed them to Ganosia.

"It's nice to see you both again. Please make yourselves comfortable, and do tell me how things have been for you both back in Veceria. Me and Felix ought to visit again. With the kids, of course. It's a beautiful country."

Lamoni wrote:Miss Janelle Hippy had finally arrived in Ganosia, with some odd looks directed her way by the man who had examined her diplomatic passport.

The obvious symbol of Ganosian imperialism - Allison Amber - was the first to notice Hippy waltz into the room. The Chancellor Princess was secluded within some congregation of pompous aristocrats, using it as a shield to prevent contact with others. She knew all about the Lamonians - they were one of the 'friends' of the Empire just because Adrian decided to get into Dolores Trelawney's pants. Noticing that Janelle was dressed as a hippie amidst the fineries of her contemporaries, Allison smirked subtly. Nothing new at all; hippies weren't uncommon around these parts. Allison didn't really care that much, but wondered if she would soon see some sort of hippie ritual happen, like some attempt for everyone to sing kumbaya and pray for peace to happen in the lifetimes of the children.

United Nations Alliance wrote:As Wolf and Kalnas mingled with military people from other nations, discussing various different militaryish things such as training and how they thought current conflicts would go, AnnaSophia walked around, greeting various guests, and finally, without realising it, walked up to the sister of the Empress and introduced herself.

Allison decided it was bed to nod her head calmly and wave her hand.

"There is no need for such formalities. I am the Chancellor Princess of Ganosia, Allison Amber Anderson-Gursoy. Sadly, I am a sister of the Empress."

The arrival of the Radiatians and the Monavians was collectively met with much fanfare from various sectors of those in attendance this night, but all they really got - at least in the beginning of their experience tonight - was the venerable armada of dutiful waiters, charging upon them with platters of snacks and drinks made from ingredients collected from all over the Empire. With Allison and Quinn incapacitated, the only other notable individual who could handle meeting with their contemporaries in the world of diplomacy was Abishag Korey, the Foreign Minister of Ganosia, who had noticed the Vecerians come in moments ago and remembered how her husband, Dene, who hailed from Veceria, was apparently late as well. Amidst the arrival of the Nui-Ta delegation, itself as well assailed by the armada of butlers, Abishag came to a certain conclusion.

Mistress Abby would have to discipline her servant sometime, and not in the way he liked either.

"Sadly? I think it's a good thing to be related to the ruler of a nation...it makes you one of the nobility...unlike me" AnnaSophia said, chuckling slightly. "So what sort of things is Ganosia well known for? I never did see that detail in the diplomatic packets regarding your nation" she said. It was true that barely any information regarding Ganosia had reached the ears of Alliance Diplomatic Corps. She pulled the missive containing the details of a possible alliance out of her jacket pocket. "Also would you consider it bad form to hand over this proposal at a children's birthday party?" she asked.

Galev simply shook his head at the waiters question as he scanned the women that were in his sight. There was plenty as he made his way to a refreshments table and looked over what they had to offer, he saw a large bottle of scotch as he smiled and grabbed a shotglass and poured him some. He took small sips as he observed the large crowd that were in attendance, he saw a group of ladies near him who were talking amongst themselves as he glanced at them quickly looking at their recognizable features. Such ladies would sure work in the project he thought as he sipped more of his scotch as he saw one of the birthday kids rush past some guests as he shrugged it off and continued drinking. The Ambassadors were scowering the room looking at it's design and the other people that were here, they were slightly more interested in foreign sites and peoples then usual Ordernites. It was disturbing to Galev.

The Elven entourage had been enjoying their time with Gano Laoans. They where a interesting but different lot. Their trip to the Pansapient Empire had open their eyes to many new possibilities. Now they had a new opportunity to see what the people and leaders of the Pansapient Empire where like. Now there was a Imperial Ball and Gala for the Elves to participate in. The ball was an important event in the Empire. This event mark a celebration of the birth of the imperial heirs. The Elven party would not miss the event for many reason. It was in-politic thing to do for a people trying to build ties with the Pansapient Empire. It was also, honestly a polite thing to do. The Pansapient Empire had been a gracious host to the Elves. Attending a party for the Empress's child only seem the right thing to do to repay the Empress for her hospitality. And for at least one member of the Elven party, a ball would be a excellent opportunity to pick up some women.

Each of the Elven delegation arrived separately. Many had been recently engage in some business members of the Pansapient Empire nobility. One of the Elven party was arriving from the Elven Empire.

Selessca

Selessca arrived at the ball at the Empress invitation. She had been enjoying the company of Prince Scott while she was visiting the Empire. He had taken her on a tour of the city and was trying to charm the young princess. Selessca was starting to like the young prince. But had not yet develop feeling for the young man. Selessca graciously accepted his invitation to the Imperial Gala. She was a very courteous girl and the chance to repay Empress Quin for her hospitality.

Selessca arrived at the Gala with alone. It was a surprise to mant to see the young beautiful princess alone. Selessca for tonight wore a beautiful red silk dress that complement her flaming red hair. The Vyshaan princess like to dress well for the occasion and this was no exception. Selessca walk causally up the stairs and into the party.

Zaihar'lanna

Zaihar'lanna made her way to the Gala alone. The Vyshaan princess had no escort. Not that she needed one. She was here for business not for pleasure. The Gala was a excellent opportunity for her to build ties more with the Pansapient Empire. Zaihar'lanna more a typical maroon dress to accentuate her deep red hair. She also wore her telltale glasses. Even though she really didn't need them. Zaihar'lanna looked like an example of a sexy librarian then a Elven princess. Zaihar'lanna made her way up the stairs and into the party.

Tyalilon

Tyalilon look forward to the Gala. It was a chance to meet some interesting ladies and show his musical talent. Tyalilon wore a nice purple vest that was cut to modern fashion. He wanted to present a hip and fashionable person at the Gala. He arrived at Gala by limo and walk up the steeps of the palace unescorted. As he went into the party Tyalilon hope to meet some nice people.

Prince N'tyeneanoron Ap Ariavel

Prince N'tyeneanoron Ap Ariavel looked forward to the Gala as another opportunity to attempt to meet some nice ladies. After the debacle of trying to meet and date Princess Lilith, N'tyen recommitted to find some nice ladies. N'tyen wore a bright blue military uniform with gold lining. This was enhanced his handsome golden features. N'tyeneanoron arrived at the palace alone and made his way to the party.

Princess Naiharonna Ap Nauhar was happy that the Gala was happening. Her was a chance for the poor lady to get her mind of her families woes. Naiharonna's sister Janaia had an affair that was echoing throughout the Grey Elf kingdom. Naiharonna gather her thoughts as she arrived at the palace. Her plan her was to make some more contact with the Gano Laos or other foreign nations her. That way she could enhance her families position in the Empire. For the party the Grey Elf princess wore a gray dress studied with blue sapphires. She paused at the stair to let some people take her picture and then enter the palace.

Princess Danifae Ap DeVir

Danifae loved parties. From what she discover so far from the Gano Laos is that enjoy a good party. Danifae for once was not interested in politics, so much as having a good time. This party was also a good time to show of her looks. For the party she wore a beautiful black dress with a silver spider web pattern covering the front and back. The dress did not hide Danifae curves but only accentuated them. Danifae gave the paparazzi a chance to take some pictures of her before she head in to the party.

Seven Elves enter the party. Each with their own agendas. Only time could tell what would become of each of them.

She knew all about the Lamonians - they were one of the 'friends' of the Empire just because Adrian decided to get into Dolores Trelawney's pants. Noticing that Janelle was dressed as a hippie amidst the fineries of her contemporaries, Allison smirked subtly. Apparently this Lamonian looked fresh outta one of those communes in the Syvorjin lands, the ones where Imperial-backed communalism seemed to have flourished. Perhaps Janelle Hippy had ventured into Ganosia before. Who knew? Allison didn't care to know, though. She was too busy - and, in her mind, unfortunately - turning her attention soon enough to others.

Janelle noticed that she was being watched by none other than the Chancellor Princess herself. Noting what might have been a glimmer of recognition in Allison's eyes, Janelle was about to go over to where Allison was being harangued by a group of Aristocrats, but decided better of it. If that was to be the reaction of the Chancellor Princess to Janelle's presence, then maybe the reaction of Queen Quinn would be the same. At least no one seemed to be making a disapproving statement on the state of her attire thus far, though the briefing material on some of the Ganosian colonies indicated that there were communal facilities in Syvorjin, which might explain why Allison at least had not made a remark on the situation herself.

Moving over to the bar, Janelle got some whiskey, enjoying the feeling of the liquid as it went down her throat and into her stomach. It would not due to get drunk at a diplomatic function, but no one said that no alcohol was allowed.

Duke Gustav looked around the ball room, satisfied by the enormous amount of foreign dignitaries and nobles that crowded it. Certainly, his stay in Ganosia was not going to be a idle one…

Where to start… he mused, finally finding Foreign Minister Abishag Korey amongst the crowd.
“Let´s near to Mrs. Abishag, darling” Gustav said to her wife. “It´s only proper that we thank her after all the help she offered while settling in the country.”

“Father, I have you permission to stay?” said Elizabetta “I would like to have a look to the ballroom meanwhile you and mother speak with Mrs. Korey.”

“Yes, of course. The most important figures of Ganosia are here, congregated for the occasion. Wander around and enjoy” said Gustav with a warm smile. As severe as the average osberg-thitanian, Duke Gustav always had a soft spot for his daughter.

Gustav, with Valeria holding his arm, went where Abishag was staying. “Mrs. Korey, such a pleasure finding you here!” said Gustav, as they greeted the foreign minister (he with a bow, Valeria with a curtsy) “till now, we haven´t had the chance to properly thank you for all your invaluable help in setting the embassy, Ganosia is very fortunate to have such a capable Foreign Minister as you, if you allow me the compliment”

Meanwhile Elizabetta wandered around the ballroom. Once she was sure she was beyond her father´s visual field, she grabbed a glass of champagne from one of the passing waiters. Shiping from it, she observed her surroundings. Used to the boredom of her everyday life, were everything was programmed to the millimeter, she found exciting being in the middle of a crowd composed by every conceivable foreign country. Elves! she though as the Elven Imperium entourage made their entrance, marveling of their exotic appearance. She had heard that there were some elves living in Ganosia, but this was the first time she had the chance to see them in person…

Present day
Late afternoon

Empress Quinn’s palace
Olyan
Pansentient Empire of Ganosia

The Monavians did not expect their path to the ballroom to be obstructed or slowed down by anything, save for voluntary detours in which they could slip off from place to another to admire furnishings and artwork. Instead, they found a palace already populated with quite a few Ganosian nobles and officials of every kind, leaving them with more restricted paths of ingress than they would have wanted. The group fanned out inside the front set of rooms and slowly began to gravitate towards the ballroom over the course of a few minutes. The chancellor managed to come out in front and Prince Nicholas was soon accompanying him through ever-thickening crowds. They managed to slip through a doorway where several people lost in their conversation were standing around and forming a bottleneck of sorts.

The pair emerged out from behind another group of Ganosian nobles as they walked towards the center of the room. Another two sets of eyes were looking over the table and its impressive array of crockery and utensils and services for wine. Their eyes, however, were not the only ones exploring the area, nor were they the only ones sizing up the incredible variety of people who were enjoying the party. It was at this point that Kaiser Steinbach spotted them and offered his greeting.

Prince Nicholas’ face stretched itself into a faint smile as the pleasantly surprised chancellor spoke. “Indeed we are,” Hanover answered as he inclined his necks downward at a slight angle and additionally leaned slightly forward at the waist in order to acknowledge the Kaiser’s seniority. Nicholas also bowed in a like manner, leaning an inch or two farther forward than the chancellor as a result of being half a head taller. Having carried out the obligatory formalities, the pair rose back to their full heights and continued the conversation.

“It is pleasurable to meet you in person for the first time,” Nicholas said. He then shifted his glance towards Margete and extended his hand in a welcoming gesture, being mindful that it was still customary in some countries for ladies to hold up a hand to gentlemen so it could be shaken or kissed. “It is also a pleasure to meet you as well.”

Lady Hanover took a minute to slip off to one side and into another of the rooms in the front of the palace. Staring out one of the west-facing windows, she savored the view that lay before her—a warm sky containing a sun that had yet to set. The whole city outside seemed to have been bathed in a golden glow that was interrupted only by the ever-lengthening shadows of buildings in the distance.

“Lady Hanover, the party is in here!” Princess Svetlana called from afar.

Hanover winked at the scenery and nearly turned her back on the window when she spotted the Radiatians approaching the entrance. She did not recognize any of them but that would not stop her from wanting to meet with them if possible. Peeling herself away from the window, away from a majestic image that she was understandably reluctant to put out of her sight, Lady Hanover made her way back towards the ballroom.

Charles and Elizabeth had managed to enter the ballroom, followed closely by Palatnik and the two princesses. Empress Quinn could not see them because they were blocked from her line of sight by some other guests, but little Princess Erica had no such trouble. She had, after all, been standing around watching the guests arrive earlier. Not having seen any pictures of the girls recently, the Monavians did not know exactly which one was which at this point, but some brief introductions would likely clear any ambiguity up. Until then, the presentation of the gifts would have to wait a little longer.

The Carters, for their part, were now on their way in. Lady Pauline was accosted a moment later by one of the servants who carried in a platter loaded down with several full champagne flutes. “I’m fine at the moment,” she politely declined. “Frank, would you care for one?”

“Why…yes, I think I do.” Pauline took a glass from the tray and gave it to her husband so that he could take a sip.

Frank held the glass up to his eyes where he could observe the color and watch a few bubbles rise to the surface before allowing a sip to enter his mouth. “It’s an interesting vintage.”

“How so?”

“It’s been aged well, and very flavorful. Are you sure you want to put off sampling thus until later.”

“Yes. I haven’t even seen what appetizers they are passing around, let alone fill up on fluids before the dinner starts.”

“You do have a point,” Frank admitted. “I’ll stick to finishing just this one glass before the meal. I cannot think of any way in which there will be any shortage.”

A Princess and a Rose

Yesmin stepped lightly into the ballroom with Tatiana right beside her. The young pair had traveled a great deal since the wedding and word of the celebration in Ganos Lao had made the nation their next stop on the honeymoon tour. Tatiana had certainly heard about the nation considering the place of her birth was New Edom and Yesmin was good at keeping herself informed. The celebration would be a interesting experience for the two young women.

Tatiana looked around with her deep blue eyes, taking in everything around her. She was still not completely used to her status as a lady in a royal family. It had been an interesting journey to reach this point. One fraught with things such a civil war in her home nation of New Edom and her brother being brutally killed only centimeters from her as she hid in a burned out building.

Tatiana looked down to investigate her appearance as she often did before stepping into a party of any sort. She first fiddled with the light grey top that snugly fit around her ample bosom and only around her bosom. Next was the ruby necklace that dangled on its chain and seemed to be very comfortably resting just above the small line of cleavage allowed by the top. Having satisfied herself with the upper portion of her outfit, she made sure the shape hugging (but not too tight) ankle length skirt was still sitting properly in its position low on her waist.

Tatiana having now satisfied herself, looked straight into Yesmin’s eyes, something she would not have been able to do without the pair of heels she was wearing, and asked the other young woman a question. “So, how do I look kitten? Yesmin absorbed Tatiana’s image with her pale grey eyes and put an arm around Tatiana’s waist, “I do not think you could look anything but beautiful my little devil. But then again, you would look just as beautiful wearing a rice sack,” she smile fondly at Tatiana, “There is just no hiding your loveliness.”

Tatiana then stopped for a moment and spun Yesmin around so that they were facing each other. Yesmin was still very much the exotic beauty she had first seen on television all those months ago. Yesmin’s medium skin tone contrasted well the powder blue dress, that was only considered a dress by virtue of a small strip of cloth that ran down her back, and followed closely the lines of her fit and elegant body. Tatiana then put her arms around the mid-section left bare by Yesmin’s dress and gave her other half a firm kiss on the lips.

Yesmin smiled after withdrawing her lips from Tatiana’s, “You are as energetic as ever Tati.” Tatiana then whispered into Yesmin’s ear which caused the raven haired princess to laugh lightly. “You little devil,” spoke Yesmin quietly, “I do not now what you have been eating, but you are certainly more frisky than you were before the wedding. Tatiana grinned and grabbed Yesmin’s hand, “It’s all your fault kitten. You are just too sexy.” Yesmin laughed and the two continued forward, smiling at the children, the empress, and the other Ganosians that were ahead of them.

Before getting too close though, Tatiana stole a discreet glance at Yesmin’s chest and smiled internally. She had certainly been very lucky to run into Yesmin outside the bookstore on that day. And now she was happier than she had ever been.

The Ambassador's New Clothes

The Ali-Zebu ambassador to Ganos Lao, Zlofta Azanić, rushed as quickly as she could into the palace after hurriedly purchasing a green, silken, and floral patterned qipao from a local shop on the way over. The odd garment fit a little too snugly around her chest, but that could not be helped since she had been in too much of a hurry to have it properly fitted. As she stepped through the door she quickly put on a pair of sandels, as Ali-Zebu women did not care for high heels or any other type of elevating footwear. After donning her footwear, she leaned against a nearby wall to catch her breath. If the damn laundry service had not ruined a third formal outfit, then she would have been on time. How hard was it to follow the care instructions she had translated for them? Too hard apparently.

After catching her breath, Zlofta started moving again and found her way to the ballroom and looked around at the gathered guests with her hazel eyes. Everyone seemed to be milling around or otherwise engaged. She then smiled to herself and thought that at the very least no would notice her tardiness too much.

As she continued forward she was glad that the qipao had slits running down the length of her legs. It would be a lot more comfortable to move around than in some of the other garments she had hastily observed and the fact that it was made of silk was wonderful. Maybe the laundry service would be able to wash this one properly. Or perhaps it would be better to hire a new service.

She pulled back her long blonde hair and smiled at the gathered Ganosians in a pleasant and well practiced fashion and thought to herself, “I will definitely hire a new laundry service.”

"Very much so, I see you have a family to be very proud of, and, if possible, us Remadians would like to publicly bestow a gift on your family, one that has been hand-crafted for your nation, as a symbol of good grace from us to you, and I believe that it is currently sitting idle somewhere in this amazing palace you call home!" he smiled, imagining Remadian children reading pages of a standard textbook for History, 50 year from now and reading of the 17th Elected Monarch, Erik Michelson and his push for Remad to enter international society, and how it symbolized a new age for the otherwise unknown island nation of his birth.
