News Anchor: And in other news, the government has announced a new step in the fight against disease. Angela Stall has this report:
Angela: Reichsfueher Dominic Kazarn today announced a new initiative in the ongoing battle against the VODAIS disease. VODAIS, which stands for Viral Overactive Dysfunction of the Auto-Immune System, is a genetic sexually-transmitted disease, which affects only those with certain genetic coding but lays dormant in others. According to Kazarn, those who are at risk for the disease are being temporarily relocated to treatment centers outside major cities, where they will be treated for their condition.
Kazarn: "This newest initiative will both aid those suffering from VODAIS in their fight, as well as insuring the safety of the majority population. The Ministry of Health and the police have shown excellent cooperation in the implementation of the initiative."
Angela: So far some 300 people have been relocated to the treatment centers, where they will undergo treatment to force the disease into remission. Ministry of Health spokesmen say a cure is foreseeable in the near future, but unavailable at the moment.
Spokesman: "Yes, we, um, would like to, like to, um, thank, the, uh, the police for their, for their, cooperation, in, erm, um, combating this, this, epidemic. While we cannot cure these people of their, um, their disease at this time, we believe that, um, within a few, um, years, we will have a finalized cure. Unfortunately, they will...unfortunately, we will have to, um, ask those being sent to, uh, sent to treatment centers to remain there, for, for, uh, study and their own safety."
Angela: Some notable cases include outspoken critic of the Kazarn government Jean-Claude Culvert, and writer Heinrich Stolz. For The Morning News, I'm Angela Stall.
Units of the Civil Police, with members of the Ministry of Health accompanying them, made the rounds early in the morning. They went block-by-block, rousing those on their lists and politely escorting them to the nearest hospital, where their appearance was noted and they were given a small paper with personal information and a number. They were then bused out of the cities into the countryside, where the camps had been erected.
Those noted were a mix of liberals, political activists, some economists, a few religious leaders, and a smattering of average Joes whose common factor had been vocal support for the old regime. Of course this common factor was concealed from the public by the media, even though a few talking heads and analysts were found to be VODAIS-positive.
Most of the people simply shrugged and continued on with their lives. After all, it was a disease, wasn't it? Who could blame Kazarn for trying to keep them safe?
