Students name: Taras Kovalchuk

Age and date of birth: He is 16 years old, and was born on May 1st, 1920.

Appearance (detailed description highly preferable): A mop-headed bespectacled boy who is thin and has ghastly pale skin. He also has bad acne, which he is very sensitive about and often tries to conceal by wearing hoods and scarves that cover part of his face. He hides his eyes behind his hair a lot as well. He wears a long shirt that is heavily embroidered and has the collar off to one side, belted or sashed at the waist, along with baggy pantaloons, and shoes that were made out of fiber from the linden tree or the birch tree, with rectangular pieces of wool cloth wrapped around his feet instead of socks.

Personality: Taras is a sweet, shy, and studious boy with a passion for history and dreams of traveling the world. He has an infinite curiosity about other times and other cultures. His only friends are his book collection and a large spitz type mongrel named Maksym, perhaps not far removed from wolf, missing his left eye and right front leg (both have been replaced by cybernetics). Although the dog is always kept unleashed and allowed to forage and scavenge for food entirely unsupervised, he will panic if the dog disappears from his sight for too long.

Brief biography (optional): His mother and father were a brother and sister. His father died in as a result of the influenza pandemic that began in 1918, and his mother subsequently died in childbirth. He lived with several different foster parents until he entered elementary school. His teacher then adopted him, apparently charmed by the precocious and inquisitive young boy. He continues to live with her to this day. Taras believes that the fact he has no friends and is unloved by other people (except his former teacher/ adoptive mother and his dog Maksym) is an indicator that he does not deserve to have any friends or to be loved. He justifies this by claiming that he "is not meant to exist" because his biological parents conceived him illegally without submitting an application for a license, and he claims responsibility for his biological mother's death in childbirth. He also believes that he deserves no sympathy because many others have had worse fates in their lives than him.

Cultural details: Values individualism, egalitarianism, hard work, helping others, self-discipline and self-reliance, inventiveness and creativity, curiosity and eagerness to learn, skepticism and independent or free thought, and finding one’s own purpose and meaning in life. The Tatrans like ranged weapons with mechanical moving parts because they take much less training to use effectively than a bow or a sword. Thus, they were considered ideal weapons by their peasant ancestors (alongside polearms based on agricultural equipment such as war scythes and two-handed flails) and have since become symbols of egalitarianism and resistance against unjust authority.

An excerpt from my factbook about my nation's origins:

The story of what is now the Hetmanate/ Kozatska Respublika of The High Tatras begins sometime around the mid-15th century. Before then the area, then known only as "the wild fields beyond the Carpathian Mountains", was only occasionally visited by nomadic Tartars, Nogais, and Kalmyks, and crossed by some Byzantine trade caravans.

Much of the Tatran population is descended from defeated peasant revolutionaries and religious heretics from surrounding countries, or simply serfs who ran away from their masters (at the time, the aristocracies of several neighboring countries were expanding the institution of serfdom due to favorable conditions for exporting grain to Western Europe). A few were burghers or even lesser nobility who naively decided to give up their privileged status and become "free adventurers". They had to build a new society in "the wild fields beyond the Carpathian Mountains", and eventually they developed a common identity.

The High Tatras was a safe haven for numerous religious communities considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church and in some cases the Lutherans and Calvinists as well, including the Czech Taborites from the mid-15th century, Anabaptists who were followers of Thomas Müntzer by the early 16th century, Unitarians from Transylvania by the mid-16th century, and even some Quakers/ Religious Society of Friends from England by the mid-17th century.

Our ancestors’ attempts to create a utopian egalitarian society, described in their own words as “a free land with no lords or masters where we all live as equal brothers and sisters with natural and inalienable rights endowed by our divine creator”, were not universally accepted. A series of “knightly orders” were sent on crusades to destroy their unique social experiment, but each one of them was defeated with the use of new technologies and innovative tactics.
