Something to do with banners wouldn't be too bad, but compared to stuff like ByteCoins and zombies, it's almost a copout. I think we're all expecting a huge new gameplay-changing kind of thing.

Not sure they'd do something with rift as some of us are still old-fashioned and don't like it.

As April fools jokes lag the server, how about an interactive game where you have to employ gnomes to cause the server to 'un-lag' for the nations in your region? You couldn't play it fast, because the servers would be lagging too much.
Although, their's actually the possibility that the servers could start to lag for real. Or, you could do what happens with actual world leaders, and leak our details onto the internet.

edit: Anyway, I just checked; it's nearly 2 hours into April 1st in some parts of the Pacific, and here in Melbourne (where Max Barry lives), it's about an hour away.
