Define thy Apocalypse

Postby Serrian » Mon Oct 20, 2014 1:48 am

So this is a more fleshed-out version of the thread I posted yesterday. Please state what type of zombies you will be having assault your nation:

---
THE INFECTED
Image

Infected by a strange virus, most likely a Prion that hijacks the brain, the Infected are an increasingly-popular genre of zombie. They are, in effect, completely regular humans, with the exception of their insatiable violence to anything not infected with the Virus. That means that they're just as fragile as humans, but also just as fast. Better start running marathons now, before it's too late.

THE LIVING DEAD
Image

As opposed to the Infected, the Living Dead are actually corpses somehow brought back to life via a disease, voodoo magic, or "leljustbecause". These are your classic stereotype of zombie (though I personally dislike them due to their scientific inaccuracy), and they're slow, hopelessly stupid, and practically impossible to kill. Don't get surrounded.

THE ALIEN PARASITES
Image

These poor bastards were human... Once. Now they're a horrific fusion of Homo sapiens and the Ohhellno dasnasty species, which has some weird effects and has taken over their bodies. They tend to be horrifically mutated and often barely recognizable as human, and often operate with an alien hivemind. These guys tend to be the most dangerous genre, as they're almost always fast, can take some hits, and have lots of weird mutations you may be unable to deal with. On the plus side, if they have a "hive queen" or whatever, killing it may just kill off all of them. Oh, and, make sure to look in the vents. A lot.

---

So, to round off: What zombies will be plotting a takeover of your nation? The quick and agile bastards, the slow and tough bastards, or the heavily mutated alien hybrid bastards?

I agree. You can only use a cure on someone who's not dead.

The infected. You can't cure a corpse, and the corpse-type are generally the least realistic of them all.

Doesn't matter, they all soak up bullets like sponges.

I tend to believe the infected type can also die from blood loss, sunburns, falling off heights and anything any overly-exposed human would die from. Saves on the need for headshots, just blast them with rifle bursts and incendiary rockets like we Toishimese like to do.

Aesthetic choice, it was originally Toishimans (sic), which IMO is even worse. Heh. Toishimajin is what we call ourselves in Japanese, of course.

Sanian 'Zombies' are almost exclusively corpses that have been revived using necromancy and can thus only move within the reaches of that magick. Their appearance is essentially that of whatever they formerly were in living, be it human or pony, but the undead have limited memory of their former lives and very low intelligence. They usually form hordes of five to ten individuals, but there is no single undead that could be called the leaders of these groups and they do not act so intelligently as to consciously cooperate.

Another characteristic trait of the undead is their simplicity, which makes them particularly tractable. They have destructive tendencies and any creature that is their equal or inferior will be seen as prey and hunted down—sentients and animals included. They are said to possess no memory of their former lives, but in truth they do seem to maintain some fragmentary memories. At times, undead can be found talking to walls as if they were old friends or unconsciously performing habits they held in life: unnecessary gestures such as running their hands through their hair or rubbing their noses or mouths. A single undead is not an opponent worthy of much fear, but if they appear in a horde, or directly under the command of a necromancer that may have raised them. They can be truly ferocious and cunningly savage foes.

We'd assume they fall under the category of Living Dead. Think of Hellsing Ultimate's own Ghouls if it helps drive that point home.

The first one.

Here in our nation, our army's policy is, "Show them no mercy- They'll show you none". Therefore, we don't take many prisoners. We simply spray bullets, lasers and flares at will. Those who survive are dragged into secret biochemical research labs and experimented on without any compassion.

Truth be told, we are still analyzing preserved remains from last year's catastrophe. The Emperor-Survivor has given us multiple grants, but we have yet to come up with the origin of these... things. Some claim to have seen corpses rise form the ground. Others say it's like rabies, beingn spread across the populace. In the mass hysteria of last year, it was hard to get definitive answers from people.

While it is possible that whatever caused this is otherworldly, there is not sufficient evidence to back this up yet. Priests from the Temples of Chaos say that it may be a curse placed upon the various races by the god Nurgle. Seeing as His domain includes disease and death, many of His followers have claimed the so-called "zombie apocalypse" is an uprising on His part, to gain dominance in the Chaotic pantheon.

The vast majority of researchers disagree, though there is a fringe group of Nurgle worshippers who follow along with this. Others, of course, say it may be a parasite, or a fungus. Still others insist that we're dealing with a prion-based infection. We simply do not know. We will dispatch any information we can once we get it.

Zombies don't do very well in the colder climates. And seeing how we're located closer towards the far reaches of the north, cold-blooded decaying flesh tends to get frosty. So, more in the spirit of the supernatural Living Dead, we'll expect hoards of raving-mad cannibals led by none other than a Wendigo.

A mix of the first and third. Infected by virus, but they look like number 3.

We have no mercy to those who are not human (unless you're a humanoid, then we're okay!) and the undead. We'll simply kill them with our power nuclear weapons and guns!

BTW, I believe the consensus last year was that it was not a prion, but a mutated rabies virus.

If it is indeed simply an infected disease by a human, then one has to wonder how these things can survive at all. Humans are insanely good at wiping out species and if we really applied ourselves than we could easily wipe out zombies too. So it's a real matter of how they manage to get so far in the first place. Obviously, other nations are going to try to spread the plague, but that shouldn't matter given how weak and fragile the human body is. It is almost easier to believe that while it is a disease, it literally prevents the human cells from dying in anyway (and not reproducing as well, which is why wounds are never seen healed). But there are holes in this theory as well (like how the hell is this possible), but to address them is to destroy the possibility of zombies entirely.

Other notable questions that need to be addressed to discover the Zombie type
~Where do they come from?
~Do Zombies need to eat to survive?
~Can they starve? (If not then simply use them as an infinite power supply on hamster wheels)
~Do they have a hive mind?
~Do they engage in semi-organized warfare?
~Do they breathe? (if not then they probably don't eat)
~Do they heal themselves overtime? (If not, then prolonged periods of strenuous activity will eventually destroy the muscles)
~Do they even need working/living tissue to be able to move?
~Can they still control body parts that have been severed? (in which case 360 no-scope headshots will be remarkably less damaging than anticipated)

(I hope these questions about your zombies have helped you pick your fave, I personally like the dark magic ones. Kill it with Holy Fire!
Dear Sir: Regarding your article 'What's Wrong with the World?' I am.
