The year is 43BC. The Roman Empire stands at it's greatest height yet, as each of the Triumvirs, Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great, and Marcus Licinius Crassus, each sought to outdo the other in winning new conquests for the empire and glory for themselves. However, an alliance of such ambitious men was always doomed to failure. The balance of power in Rome itself, formerly on a knife edge between the Optimates, the patrician families, and the Populares, has been tipped decisively in the latter's favour as the conquests of the Triumvirate have led to the free men of Rome losing their livelihoods to the slaves of patrician families.
This slight push has led to the balance of power collapsing. The Senate, led by Consuls Publius Clodius and Publius Crassus and without the Optimates, called for Sextus Pompey to renounce his governorship of Africa Proconsularis in favour of Gaius Asinius Pollio. Sextus refused to do so, and seeing the attempt to undermine his power base, his father Pompey the Great has launched his fleet against Rome with the aim of deposing the Populares-controlled Senate and ensuring that his power base remains secure. What could be last days of the Roman Republic are here.
History
The course of events leading up to now began in 53BC, with Marcus Crassus' invasion of Parthia. Rather than marching directly for the cities of Mesopotamia through the desert, Crassus accepted the offer of the Armenian king Artavasdes, and instead marched northwards into Armenia, joining with Artavasdes' offered reinforcements before marching southwards along the west bank of the Tigris.
The army of the Parthian king, Orodes II, assembled outside the Parthian capital Ctesiphon and marched northwards along the Tigris, intending to reach Armenia before Crassus. The two armies collided near Tigranocertia, with the combined army of Crassus and Artavasdes emerging victorious.
Crassus returned to Rome in 51BC, receiving the triumph he had so long desired, leaving his son Publius Crassus to govern Mesopotamia, Assyria and his general Cassius Longinus to govern Syria. Crassus' success, however, threw the state of the triumvirate into disarray.
Both Pompey and Caesar now sought to outdo Crassus' success in Parthia, with the former campaigning in Cantabria in a bloody campaign that lasted 6 years, ending in 45BC, while the latter launched a third invasion of Britain in 50BC, conquering the majority of the island by 44BC, although Aemilius Lepidus commanded the latter half of Caesar's campaign following the Senate dispatching Caesar to stabilise Egypt.
Both of Pompey's sons, Gaius and Sextus, were actively campaigning as well, having struck a deal between their father and Caesar for Caesar to gain Pompey's Asian provinces in exchange for Marc Antony's legions in conquering Dacia and Moesia. Junius Brutus, as Propraetor of Macedonia, also joined the campaign, although his help was not requested, with Dacia being conquered by 47BC.
During these campaigns, Crassus was laying the groundwork in Rome for his son's political career, eventually returning to Syria in 48BC to repel a brief Parthian invasion. Caesar, on the orders of the Senate, arrived later that year, and accompanied by Publius Crassus, he invaded Egypt, initially to conquer it, before Cleopatra persuaded Caesar to defeat Ptolemy XIII instead.
Ptolemy was defeated in the Battle of the Nile, but successfully fled to Syria with the remains of his forces, having been provided sanctuary by Marcus Crassus as a potential piece against Egypt.
Publius Crassus returned to Rome after the Egyptian campaign to become a Quaestor in the same year. While in Rome, Publius Crassus became a close friend of Publius Clodius, and the pair schemed to remove their political opposition from Rome, naming various allies of Caesar and Pompey to governorships to prevent their interference in politics whilst they or close allies retained the consulship.
Sextus and Gaius were named as governors of Africa Proconsularis and Sardinia et Corsica respectively shortly after their return to Rome in 47BC, but the main targets were Cicero, named as governor of Sicily in 46BC, and Cato the Younger, named as governor of Cyprus in 45BC. Caesar named Octavian as his sole heir in 44BC, much to the consternation of Cleopatra, who had hoped to have Caesarion named as Caesar's heir.
Eventually, however, Clodius and Publius' schemes overextended, and in their attempt to remove Pompey's sons from their governorships to reallocate to their allies during their term as Consul, ultimately sparked the civil war.
