He opens up to people if they show an interest in his projects and develops close friendships with people if they put in the effort. He is extremely passionate about xenobiology and alien life in general, particularly the idea of combining humans and aliens.

By the way, on the subject of inter-service rivalries, here's an excerpt from Mahuika's drafted intro post, where she's laying down the law to her new infantry platoon:

Eh, I already have a railgun drawn that basically looks like the TNR-360 series. If I rewrite the fluff to make it a coilgun (even though railguns are better!), we have a rifle and carbine series which can also mount a grenade launcher and a bunch of other stuff the ZRPA can't. Also, we're using my work instead of pinching some unknown artist's, so that's preferable for me as well.

Sunday probably. Though the mission won't start until there are a few more people. I work two jobss and very often don't have much time or access to a computer.
I'll review the apps that are up later and get some more bits of Athena done.

@Ularn I went with coil guns for portable weapons because they produce less heat and require less energy so they made more sense to me as a man portable option. I agree that railguns are cooler.

Okay, so all the stuff in my storefront (and everything I was going to add to it/replace it with as my skills improved) was designed for use by my IC nation's armed forces, who were basically all a bunch of power-armoured badasses which is why half the guns on that page are insanely huge like this one. Obviously if we're talking about the marines on Athena then power armour's out of the picture so let's focus on the small arms for what we might use for them:

Turns out I never actually uploaded a picture of the TBR-360 series, which was going to be the railgun cousin of the TNR-360 series in the storefront, and I've spent the last two years living on the opposite side of the world from my laptop so I can't track it down now, but they were basically designed using the same brief I gave Ont on the last page, so I think they'd be ideal. Externally they basically looked identical to the Needl Rifles except the railgun's magazine wasn't as long since it fired bullets instead of miniature missiles. The rifle had a long enough barrel to mount a grenade launcher underneath although the carbine could only fit a foregrip. I'm thinking standard issue would be carbines for everyone for ship-board use except each squad's designated marksman, who gets the full-sized rifle, and possibly the grenadiers, who need a longer gun to mount their UGL. Dirtside, pretty much everybody takes rifles, with the marksmen getting an even longer sniper version.

For a PDW, I had the following drawn to replace the current picture for the TMP-144a, with the idea of it being a hold-out weapon for servicemen who didn't get power armour. It's a machine pistol can can be fired one-handed in its collapsed form or fully extended for better accuracy. Fire modes would have been semi and fully automatic, but it's small calibre ammunition would have lacked the penetration power against armoured targets. Naval officers might carry these on Away Missions and the scientists might get one as well if they beg the marines hard enough.

There's also the revolver series but I never seriously considered them for military issue because of the small magazine and had planned to draw something else for a sidearm. They were really just the sort of thing a serviceman might buy for themselves because revolvers are awesome if impractical. I could picture Mahuika having one, maybe.

That still wouldn't cut it for the job of Chief Engineer unfortunately. He would have to be someone who has spent his entire professional career in the navy working on the systems of starships. A Marine's jobs are too far removed from that kind of position.
