After nine months of successful civil resistance, organized by Dubček and Svoboda, coupled with pressure from Western Europe, the Brezhnev administration was forced to recognize the legitimacy of the 1968 Czechoslovak reforms. These reforms persisted in the following few years, making Czechoslovakia the most liberal communist state in Central Europe. During the fall of the Eastern Bloc, Czechoslovakia held its first multiparty elections, with the KSČ retaining a large plurality. The systematic relief of dissent through a liberal political system has made Czechoslovakia highly united even after the fall of communism, allowing it to prosper in a post-Cold War world.
