While there are nations with combination of magic and regular conventional arms, there are nations with non-magical users as the majority, and thus the nations with less magical users will have boosted firearms. Although I haven't put up a list of nations with strong magic corps and nations with strong firearms corps, and I think we should try to make list of it.

We could make Spain to have less magical users and relies heavily on developed firearms and cannons.

Problem is that there's no reason why the British wouldn't nick that boosted Spanish tech for themselves or reverse-engineer themselves a variant.

Colonial conquest can be used as a reason, or maybe that Spain has an absolute advantage?

They could have the advantage in numbers. The Spanish has the largest navy at the time, if I'm not mistaken.

Three Spanish frigates taking on a British ship with a magic user would probably still end badly for the Brits, especially because magic has no infinite range and - I think - cannonballs travel a tad further. Mortars most definitely.

I'd reckon that ranged magical attacks (like a fireball) would need time to juice up, similar to a cannon manned by a capable crew.

So I'd figure that the Spanish would invest heavily in long-range weaponry. Short-range combat is not a good place for them to be.

It's your call, but I'd personally find it incredibly helpful if the Netherlands has strong firearms as well.
Say, it could be that the Netherlands previously had a very anti-magic society, and the turmoil I described in my app happened because the magical people felt suppressed.

Also, we might want to standardize jargon. "Magical people" simply does not sound nice.

Perhaps make this a simple reality of economics? Nations with lots of magic don't invest in firearms because it's a waste of effort that could be better spent in refining magic. Nations with little magic invests heavily in firearms because they depend on it, due to magic not being an option.

Considering that Netherlands went independent from the control of Spain, a nation with strong non-magical users, I think I'll find that the influence of Spain is affecting the Netherlands's magic society, so yes, firearms are allowed, and I think Spain is the main supplier of firearms for Netherlands.

And nations with the balance of magic and non-magic population will invest on both, or try to invest on just one of them. Brits is an exception, as they are rich and can invest both of them.

I approve of this economics. Should I add this to the OP?

On the third trip by the crew, however, misfortune struck, and the ship was destroyed with half the crew slaughtered. Geoffry and the cook were all that was spared. There he met the older Truant Veil, who was to become his navigator. Those two broke out after rescuing a young slave girl who was serving as a waitress, whom he adopted as his sister, and took over the boat somewhere near Cuba. After bringing it back to royal british waters, they had the ship repaired and renamed, and outfitted with guns. He picked up his crew, a group of men who had lost their own crews, and became privateers, now patrolling the carribean.

Damn. Last RP on my list to deal with shit for.

I've got a shell of an app. I'm gonna work on it before the weekend, and hopefully have it up then.

Just had one question, and it's not even specifically for Tito. I'm a fan of cooperative gameplay, so would anyone like to ally themselves with a sailor who controls the wind? I'm still trying to decide on piracy or privateering, so I'm flexible on the faction.

If you're a pirate you'll probably run into Blackbeard at Nassau. I'm not going to make any plans from the get-go, though, but what happens, happens.

So we'll need to talk about the plot.

As I mentioned before in the interest thread, the RP will have freedom over your actions, but there will be a plot ongoing, which may or may not affects the pirates in Nassau and the colony of Bahamas. Any ideas from you guys?

Maybe some great Native American treasure? A city of gold, say, that everyone is desiring. Unfortunately, it appears that everybody with the smallest scrap of information about this city - not that there are that many of them - has managed to make themselves hard to find, scattered all over from the Keys to Caracas. It is said that enough wealth and treasure are built into the very construction of the city to last a nation till the end of time. Everyone from the Royal British Government to a pirate boat with ten crew dreams of finding it. Can you be the one to find it, and be hailed as the greatest explorer of all time?

Then, of course, there is the legendary Flying Dutchman. Captained by the mystical Captain van der Decken, this ghost ship has been prowling the Atlantic for many years now, after being doomed to an eternity at sea for making a pact with the devil to round the Cape. Although its crew asks, in the rare occasion where they get near enough to another ship to signal them, for its letters to be delivered to their loved ones back in Amsterdam, it is said that the Flying Dutchman's letters have a sinking weight. Recently, rumors abound that the Flying Dutchman entered the Caribbean. Can you be the one to deliver the Flying Dutchman's letters through all the storms and rough sea that God himself will throw at you to stop them from being delivered? Or will you sink the ship and give Captain van der Decken his eternal rest at last?

I think two overlapping plot lines should be enough, but here's another idea anyways.

Since we have a magical sort of a setting, we can always have things like Nostradamus' great device. It's not known what the device actually does, but pieces of it can always be found in the black market of every port worth their salt. Good luck finding enough money to buy much of them, though. Can you be the first to turn it on, and see for yourself the great magical mastery of Nostradamus?

EDIT: Also, I've been reading some background history of the era, and may I suggest that you set this c. 1650, instead of in the 1700s? My research tends to agree that piracy was well into steep decline as early as 1700~1720. The title of this RP is, after all, "the Magical Age of Piracy."
