The only problem with that was if I was that second one I would have no direct access to the Mediterranean, unless I had opted to conquer Syria and the Levant pre-RP Era.

I can't play a fantastic Byzantine-esque Persia. However, I can play a Roman-esque Turkey.

But if you feel daring and are willing to play with the flow and negotiate with the others for concessions, then go ahead. You'll have to start as the standard Ottoman Empire, though. You can Romanize later.

Otherwise, I would really advise you to pick a Ottoman successor state when the Russians brutally rape-train it... that, or you could play a colony or a nation in a region where players aren't likely to shank you in the eye.

Well, it isn't necessarily Romanizing, but the Ottomans did claim to be the successor to the Roman Empire, so he could have a mixture of cultures pretty easily (but the Islam has to stay or it messes really strongly with the history).
