In all fairness, you pretty much started by saying all Batavians (whom you apparently see as all Dutch rather than those from the north) are slimy, treacherous creatures, so there's that.

I once got told by an Italian that laws allowing double jeopardy were necessary in Italy because of the Mafia. Like, what the fuck did they think we were doing over here with the Mafia and our lack of being tried more than once for the same crime?

The Italian-American mafia was a deeply different phenomenom from the actual Italian homeland mafia. For starters, it didn't/couldn't invest much capital into infiltrating political institutions and or damaging the penal system of the country, unlike its ancestors in Sicily, Calabria and Campania. That said, I really don't see any issues with being capable of re-opening a case if new i criminating evidence is discovered, or if proof that precedent trials were flawed/manipulated is discovered, and neither does the European Court of Human Rights. It's a mechanism that came pretty handy when it came to prosecuting cops who engaged into police brutality during the 2001 G8, got away during the initial hearings thanks to tampering from their colleagues, and then got retrialled after evidence of mistrial was discovered.

I mean, hell, Canada's not at all a saint, and yeah, sometimes we assist in enabling the States' messiah complex, but for the most part we're just trying to stay on good terms with as many people as possible (especially the powerful ones, but who can blame us for that?).
