New Imperialism - AH RP v 2.1 [Factbook]

Postby Alleniana » Wed Dec 17, 2014 1:51 am

Introduction
The colonisers of the first wave of imperialism, rebuffed by the rise of nationalism and the Americas liberating themselves, found themselves with a great deal of experience and a tremendous legacy. The era of relative peace and technological advancement that came after Napoleon began the dawn of mechanised warfare, and the beginning of the ironclad ships. Africa was opened by said technological development, and it too, was exploited. The imperialists of Europe, joined by their new brethren in the Americas as well as the first of those nations lucky enough to modernise, began the second wave of imperialism. Africa was now accessible, its riches open to all, and with experience under their belts, no nation of Asia was safe from large-scale conquest either, far from the trade ports of old. Though cries for freedom had begun in many ethnically inhomogeneous nations, by and large it was still imperialism that dominated, now far better defined and far more powerful than it had been in the era of American colonisation. A new age dawned, domineered by warfare advancing relentlessly, machine now as primary an element as man, while society itself bubbled and boiled. The New Imperialism had come.

This is the factbook thread for the New Imperialism 2 RP. Here, you are advised to keep a copy of your app, both as it was when it was first accepted in 1900 as well as a version that is up to date, as of whatever the date ICly is right now. You may also provide any other pertinent information and records, such as links to all your IC posts, internal maps, details of various notable features and systems and other like info. Please do not discuss anything here, and make only a single post into which you edit everything.

Confederate States of America

Name: The Confederate States of America | Unofficial: The Confederacy/CSA | Demonym: American/Confederate
Symbols: Flag Great Seal Anthem
Claims: This (Overlapping with other reservations are claimed areas by CSA, but are not subject to be under de facto control)
Power: Secondary Power

Government Structure: Confederal Constitutional Republic (w/ White Male Suffrage, Slavery) | President is elected by an electoral college, Reps are elected by popular vote, and senators are elected by state legislature. States are given considerable power in regards to their own economies and domestic affairs, therefore, the policy of the federal government cannot be anything more than Interventionist.
Ideology/Policy: Southern Conservatism, Federalism, Imperialism, Interventionism
Leaders: President: Wade Hampton III | Vice President: John Henninger Reagan
Capital City: Richmond, VA

Population: 12.4 million
Primary Ethnic Group: Americans of European descent
Minority Ethnic Groups: African-Americans, Hispanics
Description of Ethnicity: Based on a hierarchical system, wherein the white populace is described as being superior to those who are not white. Life is built around agrarianism, though major cities are industrializing. The slaves, and even free blacks, have developed distinct vernaculars in some regions, such as simplified English, Gullah, etc. The accomplishments of Judah P. Benjamin have allowed increased toleration of Jews.
Language: English (The Better Kind-Pure Murican)
Religion: Mostly Baptist-Methodist, with some Episcopal here and there. Very largely Protestant. Roman Catholics have a presence in the coastal areas, and Jews in the cities. Although, both of these face considerable non-gov discrimination.

Foreign Relations: The Confederacy seeks to be generally amicable with Britain, Mexico, and New France. Conflicting claims with Pallasia, along with a general tension about the war, have made reconciliation between the two nations rough and unreliable. The Confederacy has seen itself become increasingly more isolated because of its slavery, something that President Hampton sees as too much of a nuisance to avoid.
Military Information: The Military is headed by President Hampton, Commander-in-Chief. Generally, the Congress may levy the states for volunteers and, in times of dire need, conscripts. Arms manufacturing is usually done through licensing with Britain or France. Most of the Army and Navy are consolidated into one solid branch, the CS Army and the CS Navy, respectively, with other branches being paramilitary groups under the President's control. A glorious view of war is being undertaken now by the maturing sons of the revolution.
Army Size: CS Army:100,000 | The Presidential Guard: 500
Active: 50,000 | Reserve: 50,000
I Corps - Lt. Gen. Edwin Perry - Fort Lee (Richmond, VA) - 18,000
II Corps - Lt. Gen. John Bowen - Fort Franklin (Franklin, TN) - 16,000
III Corps - Lt. Gen. Robert Anderson - Fort Garrott (Vicksburg, MS) - 10,000
1st Defense Regiment - Brigadier Francis Cockrell - Fort Lauderdale (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - 6,000
2nd Defense Regiment - Col. Robert Kirkpatrick - Port-Au-Prince, Hispaniola - 1,500
3rd Defense Regiment - Col. John Moore - Fort Providence (San Juan, PR) - 500

The Presidential Guard - Col. DeWitt Alexander - Richmond, VA - 500
Navy Size: CS Navy: 20,000 | CS Marines: 2,000
Regiment of Marines - Col. J.W. Bachman - Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - 2,000
1st Fleet - Adm. John Taylor Wood - Charleston, SC - 8 ironclads, 10 wooden cruisers, 10 gunboats
2nd Fleet - Adm. Andrew J. Fuller - Biloxi, MS - 5 ironclads, 12 wooden cruisers, 6 gunboats
3rd Fleet- V.Adm. Joseph L. Huckabee - Norfolk, VA - 3 ironclads, 9 wooden cruisers, 14 gunboats
1st Gunboat Squadron - Comm. Robert L. Marston - Tallahassee, FL - 6 gunboats
2nd Gunboat Squadron - Comm. Peter Andrew - Wilmington, NC - 6 gunboats

Economic Policy: Free Trade, Interventionism | Government leaves a lot of local economic decisions to the states. However, the government may intervene in businesses should they see fit. However, the government maintains relatively low tariffs in order to stimulate trade and foreign capital. The federal government is trying to industrialize the nation, which may come at the expense of farmers.
Economic Situation: A big push was undergone, beginning with President Lee's presidency, to reduce taxes for industrialists. Industrial centers have been growing in Charleston, Nashville, and Atlanta. An economic depression occurred after the war, when Confederate money couldn't be backed quickly enough to reduce inflation, and a panic caused money to be withdrawn from the banks, known as the Panic of 1866. However, the nation is seeing a steady rise to surplus due to the paying off on debts acquired during the Panic and the Civil War
Infrastructure: Buildings generally built in the Beaux-Arts style. Efforts to increase the interests of industrialists and capitalists have culminated in the extensive construction of railroads since the end of the war, though with limited funds and slave labor. More and more mines are being constructed in the Appalachians, with plantations spreading in the less mountainous states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.
Imports & Exports: Imports: Steel, Chemicals, Other Metals | Exports: Cotton, Wheat, Coal
Currency: Confederate Dollar, backed by a gold-favored limping standard.

History: The South had been some of the first English colonies settled. Over time, growing senses and sympathies for democracy and states rights made the South a hotbed for discontent and unrest with England and, later, Pallasia. As the issue of sectional favoritism and anti-monarchism grew, the South became more militant.. Following secession in 1861, the Confederate Army organized itself under the command of General Joseph Johnston and marched north, defeating their opponents at the First Battle of Bull Run. As Johnston pulled back into Virginia to defend Richmond, however, he became wounded while attacking the Yankee invaders. As he was incapacitate at the time, Robert E. Lee was appointed commander of the Army of Northern Virginia over Johnston. Lee went on to have significant success early on in the war, crushing successively incompetent enemy generals. In 1863, President Jefferson Davis ordered Lee to go on the offensive to destroy the Northern will. Lee met his opportunity at the Battle of Gettysburg. After two days of intense fighting, Lee had encircled the enemy army and had effectively crushed it. Following the monstrous victory, Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin secured funding for the army, and Lee defeated several Northern forages into Tennessee and, on September 22, 1864, the Confederate States of America signed the Treaty of Nashville, granting the nation its independence. Jefferson Davis declined reelection, with Lee winning unanimously and General James Longstreet as Vice President. Wade Hampton III was appointed Senior Commander of the Army in Lee's place. When the financial panic hit, Lee used his popularity to influence Congress and the states to pass the Central Banking Act, creating a government-run advisory structure to maintain and direct the banks. This was a compromise between the staunch fiscal conservatives and the industrialist-moderates. This, and several of Lee's other non-partisan resolutions, drew a wedge in between the two factions. Although the Lee-Longstreet ticket was reelected again unanimously in 1868, conservatives in Congress formed one faction, creating the Conservative Party. The opposing liberal-moderates created the Democratic Party. Lee spent half of his term trying to fight this sectionalism. However, Lee suffered a stroke and, two weeks later, died in 1870. Longstreet was sworn in as President and spent a good while trying to increase the industrial capacity of the nation, including the navy. Longstreet, in 1872, was the first president to be elected as a party candidate, being a representative of the Democratic Party. In 1873, Longstreet sent Adm. John Taylor Wood, a grandson of Zachary Taylor, along with soldiers under the command of Edwin Perry to seize control of Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. Skirmishes broke out between the old colonial troops and the new, but eventually, the Confederacy agreed to pay for the purchase of the lands and an ironclad ship. Longstreet continued his reforms, but faced considerable criticism due to his involvement in the Leclerc Affair, where Longstreet allegedly paid for inside information for land speculation. The Conservative Party candidate in 1876, Wade Hampton III, was elected President due to this affair, pursuing a more global foreign policy, military increases, and aggressive stances on domestic issues.
Miscellaneous: gooby pls
RP Example: Not as much fluff as the others, I mind you.

Paketo wrote:Name: Kingdom of Pontus
Symbols: , The eagle, Waves
Claims: this which is basically northern anatolia + a bit of georgia, the creme orangish color while the purple is the vassal state of bithynia
Power: minor power to possible secondary power

Government Structure: Absolute theocratic Monarchy. The king has several themes in charge of the provinces of Pontus and each of these leaders is seen to be ordained by the gods themselves.
Ideology/Policy: The gods wills are supreme, personal capitalism or the person makes his own opportunities, Equal rights for males and females, Traditionalist conservatism (to help promote Hellenic mainly)
Leaders: King Leon Pontus II
Capital City: Amasya

Population: 4.5 million
Primary Ethnic Group: Pontic Greeks
Minority Ethnic Groups: Turks, Kurds, Armenians
Description of Ethnicity: Around 60% of the population are considered Pontic greeks while turks take up another 20 percent, 12 percent are Armenians, 6 are Kurds, and the other 2% are many minorities
Language: Greek
Religion: Reformed Hellenic majority with minorities of Orthodox christianity and Islam

Foreign Relations: The Kingdom of Pontus is on neutral terms with most nations with nearly no allies or true enemies mostly due to her religion offering no ties to other nations
Military Information: The army of Pontus is renowned for their heavy cavalry though the foot soldiers are competent armed with breech loaders but the chance to adopt bolt actions has not come to Pontus yet. The navy is mainly composed of Galley type ships as they are perfectly suited to warfare in the black sea. The government has not shifted to ironclads yet as they are still unconvinced of its feasibility in the black sea.
Army Size: The army is made up of 40,000 men in peacetime divided up into 12,000 cavalry, 24,000 Infantry and 4000 artillerymen
Navy Size: The navy has 8,000 sailors at its command in peacetime staffing around 18 galleys, 4 Barques, and 2 fifth rate

Economic Policy: Low tax rates for citizens with higher taxes for non believers and non-citizens, rather sizable tariffs on goods coming into Pontus
Economic Situation: Rather well currently from the black sea trade. Most people are in the middle class and the wealthy do not seem to be losing their fortunes soon. The poverty rate is only around 8% and the government has no plans it seems to improve that as of now.
Infrastructure: The coastal areas of Pontus are rather well developed to maintain the rather vital black sea trade that Pontus almost lives on with some while the interior varies from place to place with some being as developed as the coast like the capitol for instance and others having only simple dirt paths in the rural farming villages.
Imports & Exports: Exports: timber, Olives, Silver, iron, fish
imports: Spices, Dyes, refined metals
Currency: Pontic Drachma

History: The History of Pontus first should be looked at the conversion of the empire to christianity. The roman empire took much less zealous practices in conversion leading to large communities of people following the old gods to not convert to christianity. One of the largest communities was within the caucasus and NE Anatolia. Next we must fast forward to the fall of Trebizond, The last greek kingdom in Anatolia casting despair on the greek peoples in Anatolia and brought about a feeling that god had abandoned the people to the evil of Islam. A political force emerged from this though and that was the surviving Hellenic pagans who became figureheads in movements to free Anatolia from the turks. Many greeks were swayed by these men and followed their movements and even reconverting to Hellenic after seeing the great strength these men had which they claimed came from the gods especially the primordial god Pontus who gave the largest movement, the followers of Pontus, their name. In 1472, came the first Hellenic revolt lead by the followers of Pontus against the ottomans but though it met with initial success, the Ottomans would defeat it within a year. Good did come from the war though as the ottomans gave the Pontic greeks more autonomy to prevent further revolts but this was a mistake which would lead to the creation of Pontus. In 1515, The second Hellenic revolt broke out while the ottoman sultan sought his conquest of egypt. Most the army was away on the invasion leading to great success for the revolt and eventual peace treaty with the ottomans creating the State of Pontus in Northern Anatolia along with several areas of the former kingdom of Georgia while also totally destroying the chance for ottoman capture of egypt. A loyal believer and leader of the followers of Pontus was made king and his name was Constantine Pontus, the Pontus being adopted by him as his family name. He immediately set about reforming the Hellenic faith as to battle against any christian influences reappearing and taking away his power as the king. He reformed the office of Pontifex Maximus giving a local priest the title and this among other reforms to the faith helped cement his control. The people of Pontus flourished for 20 years until another war came with the jealous ottomans lasting 2 years. The war was decisively won by Pontus when the main ottoman force was trapped within a mountain pass and utterly decimated by a smaller Pontic force. This event allowed Pontus to go on the offensive and in the end, the war stretched pontus to almost encompass all of its modern day territory. Several more wars would follow in the next 100 years with the two nation trading territory until Pontus came to its modern borders and the ottomans were almost falling apart. Years of peace followed for Pontus in which the arts and culture flourished under the watchful eyes of the gods. The last conquest in Pontus history was the failed invasion of Constantinople in 1712 by King Samos Pontus which ended in a tragic defeat when the army had reached the gates of Constantinople. A christian army had gathered to defend the city and even with great acts of valor from the Royal Cavalry, Pontus lost losing almost a quarter of her army. Pontus was forced to reel back inside her borders and the protection of Poseidon. The years up into today were rather uneventful after that with a few revolts here and there leading to more rights for the peasant class though rather reluctantly from the nobles along with mass conversion efforts for Hellenic to keep its place as the dominant religion.
Miscellaneous: the reformed Hellenic faith is headed by the Pontifex Maximus who resides In the capital city in a state of semi independence from the government. like islam, there is a special tax for those who do not follow Hellenic.
RP Example: do i have to? :p

Les Etats-Unis De Nouvelle France

Les Etats-Unis de Nouvelle France is a gigantic state situated in the centre of the North American Mainland, as well as Eastern Canada. She sees herself as the greatest power on the continent and one would not think wrongly for believing so. But despite this status of power, she mainly keeps cordial relations with all that touch her borders. Mostly. Her main focus is trade with all, war with none but this could be taking a radical change soon - mainly, to access more trade.

Government
The nation is split into 16 Administrative Provinces. Each resident in these regions votes to put forward two ministers in the Senate, whilst normal voting ensues for politicians whom fill up the House of the People - the main legislative body.

Cities and Lakes
To the left of the list is their modern day English equivalent. Right is what I have replaced them with.

Quebec - Ville de Quebec
Montreal - Montreal
Trois-Rivières - Trois-Rivières
Ottawa - Ville d'Ottawa

Name: The Republic of Finland/The Second Finnish Republic (demonym - Finnish)
Symbols: Official Flag Secondary Flag (used by the President's Office) Coat of Arms Banner of the Socialist Party Banner of the Finnish Democrat Party National Animal
Claims: Greater Finland at it's glory.
Power: Minor Power

Government Structure: The political system is mostly modeled after the various democracies in Europe and North America. The political power is separated between three organizations - the Eduskunta, or the Parliament, the various ministries, led by the Prime Minister and the President. The Eduskunta votes for and releases laws, the President has some power over the decisions (such as a right to vetoing a certain law), and he and the ministers are responsible for executing the laws in the nation. A year ago, Finland became the first nation in the world to give full suffrage to all adult citizens, including women.
Ideology/Policy: Current leading party - Finnish Democrat Party (center-liberal). Main policies include increasing trade with foreign countries, partial disarmament, laissez faire economic politics, warm foreign relations with our neighbours, especially that huge Polish blob in the south.
Leaders: President Onni Talas, Prime Minister Heikki Renvall
Capital City: Helsinki

Population: 2,5 million
Primary Ethnic Group: Finnish
Minority Ethnic Groups: Karelian, Sami, Swedish, Russian
Description of Ethnicity: Finnish are part of the Finno-Ugric group, that's pretty much it. We are actually generally religion and culture tolerant. Most of the mainland is Finnish, a Swedish minority is in Aland and the southwest, especially Turku, Sami live in Lappland and Kola and sometimes demand autonomy rights, Karelians are basically Eastern Finns, they populate Karelia. Russians are spread out across the eastern parts of the country, especially prominent at the border with Russia.
Language: Finnish
Religion: Lutheranism, though Eastern Orthodoxy is prominent in the east. The government is secular, though, and does not favoritize or prioritize any religion above others.

Foreign Relations: Finland still holds an isolationist stance towards European politics. Famous Finnish writer and politician, first President of Finland E.Y. Pehkonen stated:
"Any nation be great, but greatness cannot be proven by sabers alone."

However, Finland keeps warm relations with that HRE superstate over there, as well as Poland, and while is suspicious of Sweden-Norway (it would be an insult for a Finnish man to call it "Kalmar") and Russia, it generally gets along with everyone.
Military Information: Fortress Finland Add in many land forts in Southern Finland.
While originally being just a small defensive force, the Finnish Army has grown significantly during the First Kingdom era. In 12 years, long fortifications were built to solidfy Finland's position and turn it into an impenetrable fortress, along with large navy size increases and land forts to fend off any naval attacks. After the estabilishment of the Second Republic, the army received a large cut, though the fortresses still stand.
The Finnish Army prefers a defensive doctrine, using attrition, winter clothes, large line fortifications and Maxim guns on them to hold back their enemies and increase their losses.
Army Size: 165,000, stationed across the country
- Central Army: 30,000, Tampere
- Southern Army: 30,000, Turku
- Eastern Army: 30,000, Vyborg
- Western Army: 30,000, Kemi
- Northern Army: 30,000, Muurmammi (Murmansk)
- Republican Guard: 15,000, Helsinki
- 100,000 reserve
Navy Size: 5 heavy ships, 15 light ships and 10 transports, split between Baltic Sea and White Sea fleets.

Economic Policy: Laissez Faire
Economic Situation: Currently in quite a steady position. Not too bad, but could be better. Still paying off debts for that dream fortress though.
Infrastructure: While most of the southern territories are heavily industrialized and have good infrastructure, most of the north is still rather undeveloped in the transport system. The rail network is large, but only a few trains reach the northern ports. As such, sea travel is quite commonly used to reach Kola, Muurmanni (Murmansk) and Liinakhamari.
Imports & Exports: Finland mostly exports lumber, paper and various metals, such as steel, copper, nickel and zinc. Shipbuilding is also prominent. Imports mostly include luxury goods and materials not produced in the country, such as cotton, tropical foods, precious metals and so on.
Currency: Finnish markka

History: The Finno Ugric were the first people to ever live in Eastern Europe after the end of the Ice Age. They populated most of Eastern and Northern Europe, but were not very numerous, so after the arrival of the Indo-Europeans from Anatolia, most of them were assimilated. At the beginning of the Roman Civil War after the Death of Caesar, the Finno-Ugrs were still a prominent culture group, being a majority in most of northeastern Europe. Slowly, but surely, though, they were being pushed out by Slavic and Baltic tribes. In the setting of New Imperialism, there are only a few major Finno-Ugric cultures left - the Finnish, the Estonians, the Hungarians, and that's pretty much it.
Until 1200 AD, Finland was a tribal land, not united under a single ruler, when the Kingdom of Sweden, their western neighbour, subjugated them. For the next 600 years, Finland was counted as the eastern province of Sweden, which eventually joined the Kalmar Union. In the beginning of the 19th century, the people of Finland finally found a glimmer of hope for their own state in the conquests of Napoleon Bonaparte. Revolutionary and nationalist ideas were spreading in the nation. And then the Swedish-Russian War began. The Grand Duchy of Finland was created and incorporated to the Russian Empire. This did not go well with the people, and a 20 year long guerrilla war followed.
The Finnish people were finally triumphant in 1830, during the times of the revolutions, and a democratic republic was estabilished. The nation soon faced many problems. In 1836, a coup installed an absolute monarchy in Finland, ending the short lived First Republic. The king, Pahjo I, used the fear and disbelief of truce among the masses to start a national militarization. Finland was slowly turned into a fortress with the "Fortress Finland" initiative, with three main lines of fortifications finished in 1846. This had a huge impact on the economy, and the debts made were so large they are still being paid off today. During the Spring of Nations, February 16 of 1848, the people overthrew Pahjo I and created the Second Republic.
Miscellaneous: Universal suffrage! Yay!
RP Example: You know me.

Ikh Mongol Uls/The Mongol Empire
AKA the Empire of the Great Zheng

An Overview

The modern empire took shape throughout the early to mid-1600s, under four khagans- Kaidu IV, Kublai VII, Bayan I, and Jingim II. Throughout their reigns, the former empire that had been established under the second Yuan khagan, Jingim I, was reassembled, stretching from Samarqand and the lands of the former Chagatai Khanate to Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital of Japan. These four khagans, along with those who came after them and the first Yuan rulers, all had a hand in the creation of the modern Mongol state we know today.
The Mongol Empire began under Kublai I, usually simply referred to as Kublai Khan. Kublai's conquests brought China, Korea, Japan, and parts of Central Asia under Mongol control, and these conquests were consolidated and expanded by his son and successor, Jingim I. Jingim I consolidated the power of the khagan and the kurultai, establishing firm Mongol control over this vast empire. However, after Jingim, the Yuan dynasty declined, until in 1403 Yuan fell to the Han Chinese Ming dynasty. The empire disintegrated into several pieces- Mongolia, two Manchurian states, Korea, a Japanese state controlled by a Mongol aristocracy, Tibet, and three main states in Central Asia centered on Samarqand, Kashgar, and Yumen. However, the Ming dynasty proved ephemeral, weakening steadily and eventually succumbing to political infighting and outside invasions in 1557. It would take the Yuan remnants more than a century, however, to reclaim China from the powerful princes and warlords that still controlled it, and to reunite the Old Empire. By 1667, under Jingim II, all of the former Yuan territories and more had been reincorporated into a single vast empire, which has endured to this day- Ikh Mongol Uls, the Great Mongol Empire, known in China as the Empire of the Great Zheng.

The Mongol Empire today is split among eight large viceroyalties, each of which is subdivided into provinces, which are divided into prefectures. The main viceroyalties are as follows:

-The Chagatai Viceroyalty, with a capital in Kashgar, controlling most of Xinjiang and the Empire's Central Asian territories. The largest of the eight.
-The Yunnan Viceroyalty, with its capital at Kunming, which controls Tibet, parts of Xinjiang, and Yunnan province.
-The Nanyu Viceroyalty, consisting of China and Mongol Indochina south of the Chang Jiang (except for Yunnan), with its capital in Nanchang. The most populous of the eight.
-The Beichuan Viceroyalty, consisting of northern China, extending to just past Khanbaliq in the north. The capital is also located in Khanbaliq. The wealthiest and most developed of the eight.
-The Kua'amar Viceroyalty, with its capital in Shenyang, consisting of the empire's Manchurian territories and parts of Mongolia.
-The Karakorum Viceroyalty, named after its capital, controlling much of Mongolia itself.
-The Yapon Viceroyalty, consisting of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the smaller Japanese islands under Mongol control.
-The Hanguo Viceroyalty, consisting of the Korean peninsula and a few small parts of Manchuria.

The Eight Viceroys are an important part of the imperial cabinet and are important government officials, arbiters, and to some extent rulers, helping the Khagan administer the vast empire more smoothly. During the mid-1700s, under (khagan), the Viceroyalty system was briefly abolished and Khanbaliq's hold over the empire consolidated, but this centralized government proved to be extraordinarily complex and expensive and after (khagan's) death the Viceroyalty system was brought back.

The Tsardom of Alaska commonly called Alaska or Alyaska, is a Tsarist autocracy in North Western North America and North Eastern Eastern Asia. It is bordered south in North America by The Confederation of the Californias, by the east by (Unclaimed-nation-spotholder) and on the west in Asia by Russia.

History

In1784, Grigory Ivanovich Shelikhov arrived in Three Saints Bay on Kodiak Island, operating the Shelikhov-Golikov Company. Shelikhov and his men killed hundreds of indigenous Koniag, then founded the first permanent Russian settlement in Alaska on the island's Three Saints Bay. By 1788 a number of Russian settlements had been established by Shelikhov and others over a large region, including the mainland areas around Cook Inlet.

The Russians had gained control of the habitats of the most valuable sea otters, the Kurilian-Kamchatkan and Aleutian sea otters. Their fur was thicker, glossier, and blacker than those of sea otters on the Pacific Northwest Coast and California. The Russians, therefore, advanced to the Northwest Coast only after the superior varieties of sea otters were depleted, around 1788. The Russian entry to the Northwest Coast was slow, however, due to a shortage of ships and sailors. Yakutat Bay was reached in 1794 and the settlement of Slavorossiya was built there in 1795. Reconnaissance of the coast as far as the Queen Charlotte Islands was carried out by James Shields, a British employee of the Golikov-Shelikhov Company. In 1795 Alexandr Baranov, who had been hired in 1790 to manage Shelikhov's fur enterprise, sailed into Sitka Sound, claiming it for Russia. Hunting parties arrived in the following years and by 1800 three-quarters of Russian America's sea otter skins were coming from the Sitka Sound area. In July 1799 Baranov returned on the brig Oryol and established the settlement of Arkhangelsk. It was destroyed by Tlingits in 1802 but rebuilt nearby in 1804 and given the name Novo-Arkhangelsk (New Archangel). It soon become the primary settlement and colonial capital of Russian America.

In1820, Alaska was used as a penal colony, and five fortified prisons/forts were built. In Zakrepleniye (Anchorage), Novoarkhangel'sk (New Archangel), Dzhuno (Juneau), Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and Imya (Nome). Improved and fortified ports were also built Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and New Archangel to make both trade and the transport of prisoners to Alaska easier. From 1820 to 1855 35,000 Russian prisoners were deported to Alaska.

In 1855, when the reign of Tsar Nicholas I ended, an inheritence issue led to the Alaska territory to be granted to Konstantin Yurievsky, a close relative to Nicholas I. Since the two Tsars were related, and did not seperate by war or other violent means, Alaska and Russia remain very close, diplomatically. This allowed the small Tsardom of Alaska to flourish under the protection of the Russians.

In 1873 Mikhail II Yurievsky inherited the Tsardom from his father , Konstantin Yurievsky, after he died of pneumonia in Novoarkhangel'sk on July 1. Mikhail II was officially coronated on Castle Hill in Novoarkhangel'sk on the second of July.

Mikhail II Yurievsky's heir, Konstantin II Yurievsky was born on April 8, 1870. Mikhail was born on October 12, 1837.

The Grand Boer Republic is a young, growing nation spanning the bottom tip of the continent of Africa. Originally a colony of the Dutch, war and breakdowns in communication led to an ultimate split between the settlers and their European mother country. Following a few years of especially bad weather in the early 19th century, the colonists made some efforts to incorporate the native Bantu people into their community. Many natives saw this as an opportunity. Disease was ravaging the native's camp just as bad as famine the colonist's, and thus collaboration became incredibly beneficial. In 1805, Urlich Jamesson rose to prominence as a community leader stating that "I can respect anyone from anywhere if they are willing to help put food on my table." It was just three years later he signed the Republican Declaration officially severing ties with the Dutch. Being entangled in the constant wars of Europe, the independence was secured almost entirely without bloodshed. Elected President by an incredible margin, Jamesson devote money to public works projects and establishing trade routes with regional ports. Using the proceeds, he ordered the construction of hundreds of schools and universities across the nation. He died in office May 23, 1816. Various Presidents filled his shoes thereafter, but none obtained the respect and authority Jamesson had commanded. The nation grew by the thousands, and when mineral wealth was discovered in the nation's Eastern territories, profitable mines emerged and still stand throughout the area. This became a driving source for the nation's wealth, and as a result further infrastructural problems were addressed and the nation continued the grow. With a profitable treasury and an intelligent workforce, the economy of the Grand Republic is poised to ascend to even greater heights.

Sure I hate myself for it, but fuck it, we invited this. It's sad, but at some point you just stop caring. People can scream and cry but nothing will ever get done about it. When was it last that a shooting incident like this (or any other) actually made people legitimately search for answers or try a new approach? None that I can think of, It's been the same people, shouting the same expletives with the same people dying.

I hear they have good internet over in Scandinavia.

_______________

Natural Resources - Fish, fruit, coal, tropical wood, livestock, ores

____________________________________________________________________________________

Military/Civilian groups of high importance - The Black Legion and Ryukyuan Agency for Ryukyo-Japanese security

____________________________________________________________________________________

The Ryukyuan Agency for Ryuko-Japanese security was formed in 1874 by order of the Council - in strict violation of a law that dictated that only the citizenry could order such a move. It's mission is to assist any Japanese or Ryukyuan Natives or Diaspora who wishes to help retake Japan from the Mongols. A vigorous selection process which involves large scale searches through a potential candidate's history that occurs in Mongol-occupied Japan itself and non occupied Japan. Then a search of any past allegiances to the Mongols or allies of them is then conducted. If nothing comes up, then the candidate is taken to the Ryukyu Islands and must embark on a mentally strenuous and physically exhausting 7 and a half month training course.

The course involves becoming proficient in three martial arts* - Jujutsu, Muay Thai and Karate then swordsmanship and general bladesmanship is taught. This is all taught during the Typhoon season - thus further increasing the individual's mental fortitude. They're also taught to look for edible plants and how to fish, along with one of the four Ryukyuan languages and if illiterate then the ability to read and write. So they can keep in touch. They're also taught to converse in Mandarin Chinese, and depending on their willingness to travel to Mongolia itself, Mongolian too. Another part of their training is learning how to built shelters from tree branches and other resources, a precaution for the wetter and more wild nights in Mongol-occupied Japan.
There's also being taught to swim to cover, if they can't swim and firearms practice.

For the last two and half weeks of training, they'll be trained to resist interrogation during live exercises.*

*Will involve actual beatings but not torture with weapons. However torture using stuff like cold water and hot coals is permitted.

*The torture goes on until the trainee says the codeword for them to stop, where they are then treated for any injuries.

After this, candidates will cover less physically stressful topics like foreign languages and shelter building. They are then given two weeks rest before the final test.

At the very end, this is all put to the test with a sparring match against the head of the Agency - Kasu Matsumoto. It then is followed with a final language test and bladesmanship test. Along with a gruelling physical fitness course for good measure.

If they succeed then they'll receive a forged Dirk* and a pair of wooden nunchaku* then they'll be send back to Japan to liaison with a more experienced member for further instructions. Then they'll be paired up until the recruit is determined to be experienced enough.

(*dagger, that in Asia sort of looks like a miniaturised katana)
(Obviously nunchuks)

*Taught by instructors who trained extensively in the martial art's respective countries of origin.

The The Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland (Scots: Commonwealth ay Englain, Scootlund an' Irelain, Irish: Comhlathas Shasana, na hAlban agus na hÉireann, Welsh: Gymanwlad Lloegr, yr Alban ac Iwerddon) is a large British Federal Republic originating out of the partial union of the English and Scottish crowns, and the civil war and revolutions which followed. The House of Stuart claims the title of Monarch of Britain, though the Republican government successfully kept its size by way of an unusually well-organised and effective colonial empire.

History

1653 AD. Oliver Cromwell is 'elected' to the position of Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. Unbeknownst to him, this was to be the beginning of a New Era for Britain, and indeed, would change the very world itself. When Irish Catholics had begun their rebellion over ten years prior, Cromwell was sent to reconquer Ireland for the Rump Parliament. When he arrived, however, he made a decision to call the rebels to a negotiating table in Carlow, to take part in the Carlow Peace Conference. The rebels were shocked at Cromwell's willingness to declare peace, yet readily assembled themselves in Carlow in order to take part in the conference. The conference produced a treaty, the Treaty of Carlow, which silenced the rebels and restored Ireland to Parliamentary rule. The terms of the treaty were long, however the main points were that Catholicism would be tolerated in Ireland by the Parliament, so long as the Irish tolerated Protestantism and respected the authority of the Parliament. Indeed, the treaty set the stage for the secular nation that was to come. Oliver Cromwell therefore had gathered popular support in Ireland, and when he was elected to position of Lord Protector, the Irish did well to remember his name. He soon died, however, in 1658, leaving the position of Lord Protector to his son, Richard Cromwell.

Richard Cromwell, however, denied any claim to the position of Lord Protector, and instead uses his power as de facto Lord Protector to create an elected title in it's place with the same name. This move gains Richard popular support, and he is soon elected Lord Protector on the basis of democracy, not heritage. Richard Cromwell, Second Lord Protector of the Commonwealth, used his own reign to strengthen the Republic's colonial Empire, along with defining when and how Lord Protectors should be elected. He decided that every Lord Protector reign for ten years before an election. In 1668, therefore, Richard held another election, and was elected with a massive majority. In 1675, however, Cromwell died fighting in India. He was succeeded by Robert Ferguson, who was elected to become the Third Lord Protector of the Commonwealth.

After Robert Ferguson was elected to the position of Lord Protector in 1675, much changed in the Parliament. Unlike his predecessors, Ferguson was fervent in his faith - Presbyterianism - and sets out to crackdown on Catholics and royalists, who he sees as the biggest threat to the security of the state. Over 60 Members of Parliament were dismissed on the grounds of them being suspected Catholics or Royalist-sympathizers, angering both them and their supporters. Furthermore, Ferguson's intolerance in his acts - which became known as 'the Intolerable Acts' - lead to anger from liberals and also from people caught in the crossfire, as previously apolitical people became radicalized by Ferguson's authoritarian attitude. This was not, it seems, a recipe for stability or peace, and the ideas of a revolution began to illustrate themselves in the minds of the oppressed. In 1674, the York Rebellion occurred, as peasants and labourers from Northern England begin revolting in major Northern cities, demanding right to vote. In 1688 - after Ferguson refused the election in 1665 - a revolution broke out. Elizabeth Cromwell, the daughter of Richard Cromwell, rose up at the age of thirty eight to lead the forces of justice against the tyranny of Robert Ferguson, in an event which became known as the Glorious Revolution. Elizabeth procured a large force of Dutch pirate ships and mercenary armies from mainland Europe, and landed in Dover with the intent to restore the Republic. She gathered huge support among the population, and the Dukes from among Britain rallied to her cause, along with vast swathes of discontented lowborns. The rebels from the York Rebellion rose once more, and by 1689, Robert the Despot had been removed from power.

In 1689, Elizabeth Cromwell had stormed the Parliament buildings with her allies, and officially restored democracy to the republic. In a near-unanimous vote by the Parliament, Elizabeth Cromwell took her rightful place as Fourth Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. One of Elizabeth's first acts was to lower the voting restrictions, and she increased suffrage by giving the right to vote to the men of the lower middle and upper lower classes of 25 years or over, along with to land-owning women over the age of 35. Elizabeth also reestablished the ancient Council of the North to satisfy the Northern rebels. It was, in effect, a devolved government, and was the first step towards the federal structure that the Commonwealth would adopt. Colonization of the New World also increased under Elizabeth. In 1689, Elizabeth was reelected as Lord Protector, and served until 1699. In that election, she was replaced by Sidney Godolphin, who ruled from 1699 to 1719, when he was replaced by the young, up and coming Henry Pelham. Henry Pelham established the title of 'Prime Minister' in 1721 in order to run the House alongside the Lord Protector. This new position would soon become more powerful than the Lord Protector. By 1723, Henry Pelham had pushed through the 'Act to Amend the Unjust Divide of Peoples' which established colonial assemblies in the overseas colonies of New England, Cromwellia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in order to sate demands for representation. They are based upon the Council of the North. Pelham was reelected in 1729, 1739 and 1749, before resigning in 1750 due to ill-health.

In 1750, William Cavendish was elected to the position of Lord Protector, and commanded the Commonwealth during the First Punjabi War, in which Commonwealth forces - mostly under the command of the East India Company - captured the port cities of Bombay and Porbandor, and establish the Raja of Gujarat as a princely state under the Commonwealth. under the rule of Cavendish the Commonwealth also faced more problems at home. In Wessex, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, concessions were given to institutions not dissimilar to the Council of the North, creating further decentralization in the Commonwealth. Other than these events, the rule of Cavendish was rather peaceful and without note. In the 1760 Election for Lord Protector, Cavendish stepped down as a candidate and was replaced by George Grenville. The rule of George Grenville was also without much note, except that in 1762, the Second Punjabi War began, with the East India Company managing to capture the cities of Surat, Jamnagar and Bharuch, along with them managing to bring the newly-appointed Rajas of Rajasthan and Sindh. The Second Punjabi War was the first war in which the supremacy of the East India Company in India was challenged, however, as a growing number of Parliament members began to call for the nationalisation of the companies assets and territories. Grenville, however, did not push through the motion, and instead allowed the East India Company to retain it's control over it's new territories and vassals. Grenville stepped down in 1770, and in the same year Charles Watson-Wentworth was elected Lord Protector. Charles' rule coincided with the first voyage of James Cook, who soon went on to discover and claim Australia for the Commonwealth, and after his successful return, he would campaign dutifully for further powers to be devolved to the North, becoming it's First Regional Governor in 1781. Watson-Wentworth was reelected in 1780, and the second portion of his reign saw the Third Punjabi War, in which the East India Company captured vast swathes of territories in the Punjab region, taking heavy casualties from the Sikh Army that defended the region. Upon seeing the immense skill of the Sikhs - and their mercenary allies, the Gurkhas - Watson-Wentworth took note of them. The Sikh State soon fell, and the current territories of British Punjab were captured. In 1786, however, chaos would erupt as a mutiny took place in the form of the 1786 Indian Mutiny. Upon hearing of the Parliament's desire to liquidate the East India Company, the Indian troops stationed in India as part of the mercenary army quickly shifted allegiance to the Parliement, and along with the Sikh and Gurkhas, they overthrew the East India Company, and liquidated it's assets. Prominent soldiers in the conflict were granted titles and leadership positions in the new Colony of Punjab.

In 1790, Watson-Wentworth stepped down as Lord Protector, and was replaced by James Cook, who had earned a name for himself in the Council of the North. Under Cook, the claimed lands of Australia were colonized by settlers and organised into various colonies, such as Auralia and New West Yorkshire. The Island of Timor was captured by a British fleet in 1792, as were the Maldives in 1793 and the Burmese Coast was subdued by British forces in the 1797 East Asian War. Cook was reelected in 1800, and the second portion of his rule saw the British Conquest of Malaya in 1801, along with the capture of Aden and Socotra in an unofficial conflict with the Arabian states. Cook passed away in 1809, and the Prime Minister - Augustus FitzRoy - took control of the majority of the Lord Protector's roles until the election in 1810. Augustus was reelected as Prime Minister, and Henry Addington was elected as Lord Protector. As Napoleon lead his forces across Europe, the Commonwealth initially attempted to remain neutral. However, the liberal members of the House were increasingly angry with Addlington's Conservative outlook on the War, and his attempts to starve Napoleon of supplies. In 1801, therefore, there was a liberal coup d'etat against Augustus and Addlington's government, and they were replaced by William Grenville and Charles Grey respectively. The Commonwealth then declared it's support for Napoleon, and began the mass shipment of troops and supplies to mainland Europe in an attempt to aid Napoleon. A Commonwealth Naval Fleet in the Mediterranean captured the port of Mahon in Minorca, and continued to hold this port for the rest of the war. As Napoleon began to lose ground in Europe, however, popular support in Britain began to wain. In 1812, after Napoleon's disastrous invasion of Russia, a second coup d'etat was performed - this time by conservative and pacifist elements of the House - and the Commonwealth signed a Treaty with the Coalition, whereby they kept Mahon and other gains in exchange for the Commonwealth cutting all diplomatic ties with Napoleon's Francia.

By 1814, the Commonwealth had changed dramatically. Arthur Wellesley became the new Lord Protector after the wars, and F. J. Robinson became his Prime Minister. They lead the Commonwealth to renewed economic prosperity after the debt incurred by the Napoleonic Wars, and continued to preserve democracy in the republic, for the privileged few, at least. In 1819, however, riots broke out across the country. The Councils had recently had their powers diminished, and this had angered the lower classes, who once more began to clamour for reform. Wellesley saw no choice but to give in; the military was on the verge of mutiny, and the liberal members of the house were in favour of granting extended franchise in the Commonwealth. In 1820, therefore, the government passed through the Representation of the People Act of 1820. The act abolished nearly all previous voting restrictions, granting the right to vote to all males over the age of 20 or over and to all females of the age of 30 or over. This largely halted the riots, though universal franchise was far from being reached. In 1824, Wellesley was reelected as Lord Protector, though his Prime Minister - F. J. Robinson - was replaced by Charles Grey. These years and the years before them had led to the establishment of several African colonies, such as Sierra Leone and the Gold Coast. Wellesey, in 1830, sought to increase his reputation by personally leading a military expedition into Mongolia. The First Opium War begun. Wellesley led his 5,000 strong army of British, Sikh, Indian and Gurkha troops onto the island of Taiwan, where they quickly established control and unofficially established the colony of British Taipei. The Mongolian government quickly realized the loss of Taiwan and a huge blow to Mongolian prestige, and when Wellesley threatened to invade mainland China, the Mongolian government was eager to seek peace terms. Wellesley's popularity soared, however he died from an unknown disease in 1839, and was therefore unable to contest the next election.

In 1840, Henry John Temple was elected Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. He oversaw the increasing discontent at the centralised nature of Britain, and enlisted the help of various political scientists to aid him in a quest to discover how to quell the unrest. Eventually, it was decided that the best course of action would be to adopt a federal structure. The Houses of Parliament were redrawn, with the House of Consuls being established and the laws regarding states being written. The initial states were based on the Councils, however these quickly gave way to many more states. Indeed, this reform also introduced Universal Suffrage to all men and women at first of the age of 20, and later over the age of 18. Temple stepped down in 1850, where he was replaced by Michael Seymour, who would lead the Commonwealth into the Second Opium War, where it acquired the colonies of Jesu, Port Arthur, Weihai and Qingdao. He would be reelected in 1860, and in 1867 would oversee the 'Zanzibar Affair' where the Zanzibari King was made to swear loyalty to the republic. In 1870 he'd be replaced by Benjamin Disraeli, who would rule as Lord Protector until 1880, where he would be replaced by Archibald Primrose as Lord Protector. Now, the Commonwealth stands ready to defend her current borders and to expand her empire, in the name of Freedom, Liberty and the Republic!

Government

Federal Semi-Presidential Constitutional Republic. The government is the Parliament of the Commonwealth, which consists of two houses. The lower house is known as the House of Commons, and the upper house is known as the House of Consuls. The lower house is elected based on a series of electoral districts, on a first past the post system. The upper house is elected via the states, again using first past the post. Each state has two Consuls as their basic right, and additional consuls are added based on the population of the state within the country as a whole. The Lord Protector is elected again through first past the post, separately from the other elections, and has near-supreme executive power. The Prime Minister is elected within the lower house by and from the members, and has power over the houses and the right to advise the Lord Protector. All elections are done through universal suffrage, with all citizens over the age of 18 having the right to vote.

BREAKING NEWS! AFGHANISTAN IS ANNOUNCED TO HAVE A DEBT EQUIVALENT OF A£23,000! PEOPLE BLAME THE ENLARGING INDUSTRIAL SECTOR AND RAILWAYS FOR THIS!

History
Afghanistan, a backwards-conservative land. Ruled by a Religious leader known as an Imam (who ruled above the mostly figure-head monarch), the people were forced to embrace a radical view of Islam, where women were forced to work only in their homes. Many people wanted freedom, universal suffrage but their leader kept a close eye on the people with secret police and dictating their lives that were poverty-ridden. The Afghan army were merely horse-archers, and their pay could barely afford them food for a small family, what more if they were farmers. The government refused to adopt the musket as a weapon of war. Big Mistake. The land was already rife with widespread resentment, regardless of ethnicity. The land ripe for rebellion.

In 1804, the newly crowned King Salam Shah staged a revolution, a revolution which would see the toppling of the Imam. The under-funded, under-trained army of Afghanistan refused to fight their fellow citizens, and instead joined with them against the Imam. Former enemies, the Tribesmen and Afghans saw eye to eye and banded together, conducting numerous attacks on government buildings. Kabul remained rather safe, and was subjected to curfews and public executions to prevent populist uprisings. However on one fateful night, a small band of revolutionaries planned to end the 4 year conflict once and for all. They detonated black and gun-powder in a dark alley that lead right to the Palace Courtyards.

As the 60 or so men stormed the Palace and overpowered the 4 bodyguards of the Imam that were guarding the palace. As they searched the over 500 rooms of the Palace and they found where their tax-money was going to. Numerous golden statues of the Imam, a 1,000 piece dining set of gold and silver cutlery and a gold-trimmed dining table made of imported Oak. As the sun finally dawned upon Kabul, the 60 men found the Imam, hiding for his life in a latrine. In a trial conducted by the King, the Imam was found guilty of all charges of Corruption, Oppression and Blackmail, and was to be sentenced to be publicly shot by firing squad. Artists from various newspapers showed up on the day of the execution. In Kabul Square, the shackled Imam was blindfolded and propped up against a wall; which is currently used by people to throw rocks, rotting food etc at it to signify the peoples' right to freedom. The artists, with their brushes at hand, documented the last moment of the Imam on Canvas. As a final act of defiance, the Imam refused to shut up before being shot, endlessly blabbering that they would 'regret this'. His lifeless body crumbled to the floor, his face sliding down the wall. The crowd of people who attended the event threw rotting vegetables and cow manure at the corpse and shouted "GOD SAVE THE KING!" while waving Afghan flags. The paintings are on display at the Newly opened 'Museum of Kabul'.

The revolution came at a heavy cost however, with over 40,000 Afghan civilians murdered by forces loyal to the Imam. The new King proposed widespread reform , allowing women to vote, work and learn. The Illiterate majority of the Afghan populace were introduced to a new, government run school system, with former religious teachers teaching. The result was a 'smart', (for Early Middle Eastern Standards) literate population that quickly became intellectually and culturally connected to the world. Steam engines, breech loading-guns and cannon and railways, all relatively new to the Afghans. The current King is investing over 38% of the national budget into industrializing his agricultural nation. Foreign investors are welcomed with open arms into the Afghan Kingdom. A large increase in income has been witnessed, with more and more Afghan families able to move into better housing and able to send their often large families to Secondary School education.

Government
Kingdom, with regional elections. Each district (City/Town etc) elects a representative called a 'Constable'. The Constable is responsible for proposing/carrying out laws, ensuring the citizens pay taxes and providing a certain number of men for the army (Quota is 6% of all males between 18-39). Should the Constable do a lackluster job, the citizens of his district may hold referendums to kick a Constable out. District elections are held once every 4 years, and there is a term cap of 4. All Constables answer to the 'Prime Minister', a figurehead that is appointed by the King/Queen to manage internal affairs.

Government Legislation is divided into 3 Houses:
(Highest) The Afghan Parliament; where the the PM and his Ministers meet up and discuss current Issues.
House of Law; where the Constables propose and carry out Laws.
(Lowest) People's Parliament; where the public may meet with officials for Government Aid, to propose Laws and to file Complaints.

  • Commonwealth of England, Scotland & Ireland (slightly)

Military
Of the 40,000 men who actively participate in the Afghan military, 5,000 are given special training and equipment by the Government. The rest are trained by officers local to the district and either use their own weaponry or use outdated government Snaphance, Caplock and Flintlock muskets. Some tribal warriors (called the 'Battalion of Tigers') from the remote northern regions are not officially included in the Afghan records, but their numbers are around 23,000 healthy men. Though most are armed with primitive guns, bows or swords, their tenacity and fearlessness towards death and combat strike fear into any enemy.

Each Afghan recruit is given 1 and a half years of Basic Military Training. Those who excel in this are forwarded to Royal Battalions, that are supplied weapons and training from the King himself. These men are the cream of the crop, the crème de la crème, the big ones, where officers from abroad, be it from neighboring nations or far afield, are hired to train the men. Their equipment is the best in the Army, armed with Breech-Loading and Caplock Rifles and cloth caps, akin to Tam O' Shanters with metal or leather cervelliere on the inside. The common men, however, have to make due with their personal firearms or obsolete Flintlock, Wheel-lock or even Matchlock muskets. The only thing everyone were issued were water and cold resistant uniforms, made of animal hide and lace. The uniforms provided were of great use against the bitter wind, but often tended to get waterlogged if soaked in water. Helmets are still not standard issue, and many of the common men wear kepi or pith hats or turbans.

Barely befitting a modern army, the tribes-people of Northern and Western Afghanistan are not officially listed as combat personnel. However, the Army has come to rely on these Brave and Loyal men, who would take a bullet and charge a Gatling gun if it meant Freedom for the nation. Armed with pre-modern firearms (matchlocks), bows and swords, these men and women have fought for centuries against invading Bandits from the Han Mongols. Every Private of the Afghan military receives roughly 1 AP Shillings a week, with increments of 1 AP Shilling for every increasing rank. Every half-year, troops are mobilized for exercises in the high mountains of Northern Afghanistan, where troops learn how to detonate explosives, ambush enemy forces, make molotovs, and climb cliffs with the use of 3 ropes. Each man is fed a daily diet of a Potato, a Can of A-Rations (which were Potatoes mixed with Carrots, Meat Products, Rice, Celery, Peanuts and Spicy Gravy) and 1/2l of Water in canteens. After a day which the men were deemed as 'hard working', their superiors would sometimes award the men with beverages such as a local variant 'Root Beer' or extra rations. This diet meant that the average soldier eats roughly 3600 Calories a day.

The 4 Defensive lines that protect Afghanistan from Foreign aggression are called the Shah, Kabul, Western and Persian fortifications. Built on largely flat or hilly terrain where there defensive maneuvers are more vulnerable to enemy fire, these lines of trenches provide substantial protection from gunfire and artillery. Each line is manned by the Provincial Standing Regiment (see below) which is responsible for maintaining their fortifications. The trenches are made in a zig-zag pattern, as enfilades and defilades. Every few feet or so, a Gatling gun was placed in a Sap, a protruding part of trench, where they would have a 360 view of the Battlefield to provide Enfilading fire. The ground in-front of the trenches were wet, muddy fields where local soldiers and civilians have flattened to provide an unblocked view of the Entire border. Smaller trenches, dug by Provincial Battalions, line the entire border, but are either very small or not recognized by the central government. The mountain passes usually harbour numerous foxholes where troops can rain down explosives and bullets down on any unsuspecting foe. The mountains themselves are rigged with explosives and should any force get past these defences, the mountain would be blown up and the resulting landslide would block the route and kill a few.

Mountain guns are common place in the mountain passes, and numerous industries propped up by foreign investors supply the Afghan army with food, ammunition and guns. Mounted infantry also see widespread use where their mobility and transportation ability even in the harshest environment are very useful in supplying fellow comrades and encircling already bottle-necked enemy forces. These defences and the men who use them cost the Government a total of A£12 million a year; roughly 1/8 of the national budget. This cost is almost guaranteed to increase during war time. To balance this cost during war, farmers are expected to give 25% of their crop (up from 5%) and the working class pay a 50% tax (up from 25%).

Now, with Dutch funding, the Afghan Army has been reinforced with better guns and equipment; most men have upgraded their weapons to cap-lock or breach-loaders. This new income has also allowed the Afghan army to fill up more of its ranks, and are currently embarking on a widespread recruitment drive across the nation. The Afghan Territorial Army was recently founded, armed with modern equipment and trained by Dutch talent. Most of whom had never held a gun before, and now are at the forefront of the Afghan army and ready to attack at any moment. The Afghan Home Guard has been relegated to the trenches and borders, and are semi-mobilized, with only half its force ready for battle. The army currently looks for recruits for the newly established Afghan Expeditionary Force under the command of the Dutch. Non-mobilized units are payed half their regular wage.

It is a federal constitutional monarchy over a federal parliament. The Dual Kingdom is ruled over by the House of Valencia and is administrated by the Royal Assembly. It is one of the largest powers on the Mediterranean Sea and is able to maintain control over trade in the region due to its large coastline, many ports, and powerful navy.

Name: Kalmar Union of Scandinavia (Sk.: Kalmarunionen Skandinavien; Denonym: Scandinavian/Kalmar)
Symbols: Kalmarbaner Coat of Arms (Vapen); Vitae lampada
Claims: Boop
Power: Secondary Power

Government Structure: Unitary Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy. Members of the Parliament are elected by county with amounts of representatives proportional to the amount of population in the given county. The Parliament is bicameral, with Upper and Lower houses modeled after Britain. In regards to administrative divisions; the Union is divided into several large provinces in turn divided into counties.
Ideology/Policy: Constitutional monarchism, Classical liberalism, Economic interventionism, Pan-Scandinavianism, Imperialism.
Leaders:
-- King Gustaf IV Akilles von Wittelsbach (Head of State)
-- Lord High Chancellor Per Isak Nordahl (Head of Government)
-- Riksdag (legislature)
-- Riksrådet (privy council)
Capital City: Stockholm. The reasons for this election were threefold: Stockholm was previously the capital of the most powerful realm in the Union, Stockholm was considerably more prosperous and populated than Copenhagen or Kristiania and was also strategically better located.

Population: 9,259,200
Sverige: 4,813,600
Norge: 2,122,900
Danmark: 2,230,400
Island: 72,400 [claimed]*
Grönland: 9,900 [claimed]*

colonies here (to be sorted afterwards)

Primary Ethnic Group: Scandinavian (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian).
Minority Ethnic Groups: Sami, Finnish, varied Inuit
Description of Ethnicity: Scandinavians are a group of ethnic groups native to Scandinavia, mostly inhabiting the country or other Nordic countries. The Union has caused some amount of internal migration, and thus culture in certain urban areas and otherwise has become somewhat diffused. The government is pursuing policies to show the common bonds between Scandinavians.
Language: Scandinavian. In the late 18th Century, the Monarchy took measures in order to standardize the various dialects spoken in the realms, and the Scandinavian language was the product of such work. Scandinavian is encouraged by the government and taught in public education; nevertheless, large amounts of Scandinavians speak their former native languages, such as Swedish or Danish, without knowing Scandinavian.
Religion:
-- Protestantism/Lutheran/Church of Sweden: 93%
-- Roman Catholicism: 4%
-- [Russian] Orthodoxy: 1%
-- Judaism: 1%
-- Other: 0.1%
-- None: 0.9%

Foreign Relations: Scandinavia holds diplomatic relations with most civilized nations around the world. Scandinavia has presently been attempting to establish her neutrality in European affairs, as the Treaty of London has done for other countries. This has proved ineffective, as several nations compete to secure Scandinavia in their 'sphere of influence'. Scandinavia has historically held friendly relations with the British and the Germans.
Military Information: The Kalmar Armed Forces form the entirety of the military component of the Scandinavian country. The Kalmar Army is rapidly reforming, almost like Prussia's reformation except without the Moltke factor (not as effectively, that is), in order to reach standards such as the British. Currently, the army is on-par with most of the other armies in Europe, although, of course, the Scandinavian army remains small.
Army Size: 180,000 active, 330,000 reserve
-- Army of Jylland: 30,000 men; Aarhus
-- Army of Sundsvall: 40,000 men; Sundsvall
-- Army of Uppsala: 20,000 men; Uppsala
-- Army of Norbrötten: 40,000 men; Töre
-- Army of Bergen: 10,000 men; Gothenburg
-- Colonial armies: 40,000 men
Navy Size:
-- High Seas Fleet: Bergen; 39 ships, 3 ironclads, 7 frigates; flagship: “Tre Kronorn”
-- Baltic Sector Fleet: 24 ships, 3 monitors, 2 ironclads, 5 frigates; flagship: “Viktor av Waterloo”

Economic Policy: Protectionism (limited); Interventionism; Corporate Welfare/Partial-subsidization to encourage Industry
Economic Situation: Following the depression of the 1870s, Scandinavia is slowly in the way to recovery, partially aided by the interventionist policies of the government. Kalmar Scandinavia experienced its industrial revolution in the 1850s (in Vicky 2 terms), making use of its ample reserves of coal and timber. The government is currently engaging in 'corporate welfare' in order to 'rescue' the Kalmar industry, which suffered (although not unbearably) by the recent recession. In certain sectors, industry has yet to replace local artisans, such as in the glass-making sector. This is especially apparent in the more remote reaches of Scandinavia.
Infrastructure: The Kalmar infrastructure is rather advanced, although the large and diffused nature of Scandinavia limits the effectiveness of such infrastructure. A large part of the country's railroad length follows the coastline, such as the Stockholm-Töre line.
Imports & Exports:
-- Imports: Varied foodstuffs, coal, chemicals, wool
-- Exports: Timber, iron, processed parts, machinery
Currency: Kronar (plural: kronorn; sign: kr) [Gold standard]

History:
1. Kalmar Union
OTL, but Swedish Nobles are appeased after a Swedish noble family occupies the crown. When their last heir dies without child, a Royal marriage with the Wittelsbach family produces a Wittelsbach at the throne of Sweden. Currently, Gustaf IV Akilles is set to die without a male heir, and his old age might make that a soon-to-be event.

2. Napoleonic Wars
Kalmar Scandinavia aligned itself with the Coalition during the Napoleonic wars. Scandinavia was one of the more involved countries in attempting to take Napoleon down. In the War of the xth Coalition, Napoleon crossed the Rhine and invaded Scandinavian holdings in Continental Europe before the powerful French army smashed its way into Scandinavia and forced the Kalmar Union to accept the Peace of Uppsala just days after the French army occupied Stockholm. Under the terms of the Treaty of Uppsala, Scandinavia was forced to relinquish Finland as a realm and grant it complete autonomy, although the reasons for such an interest remain unknown. Furthermore, Kalmar Scandinavia was forced to sign an alliance with France and join the Continental Blockade against Britain.

After the disastrous pseudo-invasion of Russia, Kalmar Scandinavia obtained independence from both the continental blockade and the alliance with France, although it was unable to retake Finland. Kalmar armies marched South with the rest of the ‘Last Coalition’ and ceremoniously defeated Napoleon and Waterloo, thus ending the Napoleonic Wars. In the subsequent Treaty of Vienna, Kalmar Scandinavia did not receive substantial gains in Europe, but received several formerly French colonies, such as x and y.

3. 19th Century
Following the Napoleonic Wars, Scandinavia remained largely neutral of European affairs, except that it rapidly began securing colonies wherever these may be placed. Scandinavia also made unsuccessful attempts to restore Finland as a realm of the Union. Several diplomatic overtures were rejected. Military invasion was considered but then abandoned, despite the overwhelming superiority of the Kalmar Navy when related to the Finnish. Other than exerting diplomatic pressure on Finland to return to the Union, the aging Gustaf Akilles has made no attempt to restore Finland as a realm.

The 1873 economic hardship hit Scandinavia severely. The path to recovery has been slow, but the government has begun measures to introduce traditional economic prosperity into Scandinavia once more.

Miscellaneous: I can further elaborate upon any aspect if asked to do so.

The NI2 Wiki will now be used in preference to this. You are welcome to keep referring to and updating info here, but the Wiki is preferred, and will be the medium that I update the most, at least.
