A typical squad would consist of two fireteams. So three privates led by a corporal, who are in turn led by a sergeant or staff sergeant. Sometimes the corporal as head of the fireteam is a sergeant. So you can mix it up, say one fireteam with two privates, a corporal, and a sergeant, and another with three privates and a corporal, if you're so inclined, if you want your guy to be a staff sergeant. My guy is a straight up sergeant and a squad leader. It just depends. In the '60s the army wasn't quite as well organized as it became after about 1976.

Not necessarily! There were some Vietnamese women who were impregnated during Japanese occupation which resulted in very, very small half-Japanese children. Some might've taken Japanese names if they were sympathetic collaborators. Probably would've been executed by the Viet Minh but it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
