Silver stopped in her tracks, hopping backward a bit as Marran landed in front of her. "Oh, it's you. I didn't think I'd run into you so soon." she said, waving away a passing feeling of suspicion. "I, um, did not know we could choose our own form of work. Doubt there's anything available that would be as satisfying as my last job, though..."

A look of mourning slowly appeared on her face, only to be quickly erased. "And you?"

Marran Shrugged. "New world, new job. I need to look at it that way or I'll lose it. Well, maybe a similar job. I don't know how this ship's mechanics even work. Probably totally different. I could apply for that job, but I don't know. Officer Fredrick, guy I met yesterday- handled brusque at first but we got along, said I might give joining the Police Department a shot." Marran said, looking in the distance. The Blockade was still up, but being retrofitted into a checkpoint. Funny that.

"They look like they need all the help they can get, and guns work the same no matter where you are. Read up on 'em, turns out their force is primarily non lethal. I restate primarily. So I don't know." Marran stated with some uncertainty as he saw a police VTOL fly by.

"They got public shuttles here. Maybe they need new pilots. I don't know the systems but a familiarity with RCS, thrust, momentum and preservation of such can't hurt to list as a qualification. As for the registration procedure..." Marran said, pulling out his tablet and bending over to let Silver get a look at it. "Looks like at 1000, we'll be called into the registration zone. Map shows me that they're using public terminals for it, so we'll see how that goes. Don't know much past that really. That voice over the intercom will keep us updated. Remind me to thank Bentu, too. This thing saves an audio transcript of each announcement." Marran said as he was suddenly reminded of Bentu. He had to thank the Ambassador when next he saw him. This device was looking more helpful than he thought it'd be.

Sweet sun goddess above, this one talks a lot. It's like a bursting dam.

Silver took a second to try to process everything Marran said, honestly unsure of how to respond. "...We'd better get to the terminals early. The lines will likely be even longer than before." she replied, moving toward the mess hall. "Until then, we should eat something. Maybe Bentu already has a table."

"Well that doesn't serve for about forty more minutes. As for registration, something tells me they'll want rank and file stuff going on. They say they've got a big announcement too on the schedule today. Everything after 1000, directly, is shaded out. No idea why. Still you got a point, let's see if we can register." Marran said, eyes darting about and forward. each district had a couple officers posted in it, as far as he could tell. He approached one ahead and proceeded to ask.

"Sir?" Marran said, the visor of the officer's helmet fading from opaque to clear, a feminine eyebrow raising at the manner of which he addressed her. "Sorry, ma-"

"I just like to give people shit, you're fine. What do you need?"

"Are we allowed to register early?" Marran asked.

"How do you know abou-... Ah, that's why. Helmet's scanning your ID, looks like you're in with one Ambassador Bentu. Keeps company as odd as he, seems like. No offense."

"None taken. So, can we?"

"'Fraid not, Mr. Varri. That goes for breakfast too. Not unless the Ambassador wants to shuffle you ahead of everyone else, but he knows damned well that ain't due process. By the way, Elizabeth Connor, A6's watch lead. You need anything else, come to me. I'm responsible for you guys."

"Thank you sir." Marran said, nodding and looking to silver with a shrug.

"Take care citizen." The officer said as her visor went black again, head turned to signal that she had some other things to do.

"Well shit. Guess I did do a lot of line skipping yesterday. Guess we could hang around?" Marran offered, sauntering away from the officer.

Slowly Bentu rose from a deep sleep to hear an alarm going off. Siting up slowly he taped the off button on the alarm. He then stretched, his back cracking a bit as he realized that he had fallen asleep at his desk. He looked a the page that he had stopped on something about a petition for a privet establishment. So, far due to limited resources and the mess from the quick evacuation they all such things were supposed to be rejected. But Bentu knew that eventually they would be allowed so to save him from the trouble of having to reread all of them he read it now accepted the one's he thought appropriate and filled them to turn in later when they were allowed. He sighed as he looked at the stack of papers still in front of him. He was starting to wounder if they were prosperously giving him all the paper work. Slowly getting up he walked out of his office to his room and took a shower.

Silver shrugged. "I guess. Not like there's anything to do around here yet." she said. "And that announcement - it must be pretty important if they're canceling everything after registration."

She trotted a short ways to the nearest storage crate and leaned against its wall, allowing more space for passing refugees. "I wonder if there's a library on this hunk of junk..." she thought aloud. "I miss my books."

Marran paused as he leaned against the wall next to Silver. Books. He hadn't heard that word very often in its own. He'd seen pictures and a few of them in person- even felt them. But nothing past that.

"Back where I come from most libraries are digital. I know solid paper copies are kept in vaults but that's generally not for our consumption- the public, that is. Truth be told I've never actually read a book. All the way through, front to back. Paper isn't weird to me it's just... Kind of archaic. Kind of like solid currency, or uncooked food. I bet there's a library, couldn't help you on what books to read though." Marran said with a chuckle. "I know genres though. What kind do you like?" He asked.

"History, mostly. I was the filly who stayed in school for an extra few hours just to read some more books on the subject... all while passing my maths and sciences by the skin of my teeth," Silver explained, rubbing the back of her head with a fake laugh.

"I suppose I just like learning about how we changed over time and why. That, and the stories - I love reading about the lives of people who lived in the past, even if they're fictional. Especially if they lived centuries upon centuries ago, in the time of kings and castles and big, strong knights that were humble, but still had a real sense of pride and valor..." she rambled, her cheeks turning pink as she stared into nothingness.

There was a pause as her senses caught up to her. She straightened her neck with a huff, regaining her composure. "My apologies. Got a little carried away." she said. "And yes, I am aware of the digitization of ink and paper books that seemed to be sweeping across every nation on Cereis. I understand why it was happening, but I do prefer physical copies. There's something more satisfying about them."

"I would agree with you on that point." said Bentu as he walked up to join them. He had finished his shower a while ago and had decided to once again get out and among the public. In part it was to escape the paper work; the other was to how his "friends" were doing specifically a certain Marran Varri. So after finishing with the day to day necessities he had set out to find them. "So, anyway what jobs do y'all plan on signing up for?" he asked.

"No need to apologize, Silver. You seem to like these knights a whole lot." Marran said with a grin. "You'll have to tell me all about them sometime. "Oh. Ambassador Bentu. Hello." Marran said, a little frustrated by the interruption. He couldn't voice the frustration though, not politely. He did owe Bentu a fair bit. "Wanted to thank you for getting me processed..." Marran said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his tablet. "And this. It's been damned handy." He said, waving it and putting it back in his pocket.

The cook. Marran knew this man wasn't mean- bad. Ill willed. But he did remember that this cook triggered what ended up giving him an episode last night. It was inevitable, but that last question about what he did hadn't helped him much. "Well back where I come from you could jot down notes in digital copies if you so wanted. Could erase them too. As for pets, can't say much about that. Work I used to do- not taking pets was a good thing. And good morning."

Marran begrudged the interruptions, but he supposed he'd have to deal with such. He did have all day, anyway. A thought occurred to him, however. He, Silver, and Jonathan were all in the same area, all of a sudden.

"...Wait. We just met yesterday. Did we all just so happen to end up in the same district by chance or what?"

"Oh. Bentu. Hello." Silver said, a little surprised. She didn't expect him to find them so easily, but then again, he does seem to have access to information that others don't. She supposed that he could have simply looked through a database or something to find where they lived.

"No idea. I hope I can find something similar to my old job, but I doubt that'll happen."

"There'd better not be any cameras in my living quarters, at least." Silver replied, becoming visibly frustrated. Being monitored while in public was one thing, but to her, having no safe haven from peeping eyes may be the ultimate invasion of freedom. "I'll tear them down myself if I have to. It'd be worth having military police breathing down my neck."

An officer nearby chimed in. "Nah, there's nothing there. That'd be a logistical nightmare. In theory there are 720000 potential, not actual, rooms to survey. We don't have the staff to monitor the rooms- at full capacity, that'd be 800 crewmen each watching 18 cameras, 24/7. With shifts that'd be about 2400. With the crew size on this ship that'd be nearly 10% of the crew watching a bunch of unarmed and unequipped civilians. Gross misallocation of resources. Two pairs of officers per patrol in each district is a lot smarter and gives you guys more privacy. And yeah, I recited answering that question- I knew I'd get it a lot. Just wanted to allay a concern of yours, ma'am." The officer said. it was Connor again. Marran was impressed with how she'd gotten ready for this.

"We arebeing watched though, outside?" Marran asked.

"You bet your fuzzy rear, sir. Can't tell you where or how but there's eyes in public. We're not into invasion of privacy though- and you know, you are guests on our ship. It's like having a friend come over who can be unpredictable, namely in breaking your toilet and eating all of your chips. And not necessarily in that order, either. But he's a friend so you only keep an eye on him and give him a stern warning."

Marran nodded in understanding. It was a fairly understandable concept.

"Might want to head to the mess. It's a decent walk and they're probably sorting everything out. Line won't be huge, I don't think."

"A DATE!"

The encounter with Silver echoed through Rivette's mind throughout the night. After listlessly wandering back to her room after her meeting with Mr. Toilet, the rest of the evening passed by like a blur. Marcus came by, as expected, with his music player. He talked with her, but she doesn't really remember the exchange. The fix was simple, at least she thinks it was, from what she can remember. She went through the necessary motions, but her mind...her mind was somewhere else that night.

Rivette's thoughts all night were the typical musings of an anxious introvert such as herself: countless possibilities, countless scenarios, countless ways things could go right, countless ways things could horribly, horribly wrong.

Especially the last one.

"What if I mess her leg up? What if I set her on fire?

WHAT IF SHE THINKS I'M WEIRD?!"

Suddenly, the infernal buzzing of the alarm echoed in the metal box that is her abode. Luckily, her alarm bobble shuts it off nigh instantly. She had many little simple bots that perform basic tasks. Some useful, some just for amusement. She always made stuff like that. It's fun, or at least she thinks so. No telescreen announcements, since she broke that in a fit of sleep-deprived rage a while ago, and didn't care much to have it fixed. A large gear lodged in some broken glass is all that remained.

Did she sleep? She wasn't sure. She couldn't tell what she imagined or just dreamed. She knew one thing for sure: she was tired. Then again, she was always tired. Such is the way of things.

She showered to clear her body and mind, and with a click and a pull, her work saddlebags filled with all her tools were snug on her lavender sides. She looked at herself in the mirror before she headed out the door to breakfast.

She looked like crap.

Perfect.

Weary, dehydrated, and hungry (Mr. Toilet, if you recall), she left her room and shuffled towards the mess hall.

Silver eyed the officer. "Good to know. On both accounts." she replied after a brief silence. She wasn't going to say anything about it, but she still didn't feel comfortable, even in her own quarters. Maybe it's just something you have to get used to.

She turned around and tilted her head toward the mess hall. "We'd better get moving. I'm even more hungry than I was last night."

"Sounds like a good idea. Wonder what other kinds of weird foods they have here. I sincerely doubt they have any small reptiles for consumption, much to my chagrin." Marran said as he started walking towards the Hangar's entrance. The walk was a sizeable one, but didn't take forever. It was interesting, to Marran, to see everyone walking around in this ship's box city in progress, observing the beginnings of normal life in it. Though bereft, people still found time to be at least somewhat social... And in a sitatuation like this?

That couldn't be anything but a good thing.

Before long the group was in the cafeteria, and a crowd was forming behind them. Everyone else was still getting their bearings while they decided to get an early start. Marran walked up to the counter, and requested some of this, Pork he'd heard of. He was promptly handed a meal and told to sit wherever.

"I'll be over here guys." He said, finding the nearest seat.

Jonathan picked out what had, for reasons lost to the mists of time, always been known across the galaxy as a Full English breakfast and took a seat opposite Marran, he had been silent since his first interjection, mainly waiting for the right moment to apologise.
He was silent for a moment, looking down at his meal before suddenly looking up to Marran.

"Listen," Jonathan started, toying with a rasher of bacon as he spoke, "Marran, I just want to apologise for being too....probing, yesterday. I realise now that it's still to early for those sorts of enquiries, and I imagine reacting similarly in your position. So, I'm sorry, for being such a nosey bugger."

The sound of the cook's voice at first caused Marran's ears to fold back, but as the words continued to spill out his ears relaxed, as did his brow. Taking a sip of water, his eyes locked with Jonathan's. He'd heard people apologize for many things before. He couldn't help but wonder if he should accept it.

But it wasn't Jonathan's fault, was it? He was simply attempting to make conversation, though he was somewhat brusque in how he handled his questions. He couldn't really blame Jonathan.

"It's alright. You didn't really know- how could you? It's really alright. I'd offer to talk to you about it all over a drink but there aren't any establishments here." Marran said, wondering if there ever would be. If he ever got wind of it, he knew where he was going.

"Say. I've looked at the schedule- what I could see. You one for running track?"

"I've dabbled, In fact, I was on the University team," Jonathan replied, reaching for the salt and pepper, "Got to exercise when you're in my line of work. Cooks have a terrible habit of nibbling throughout the day. If I didn't exercise, I'd be as wide as I am tall."

He took a mouthful of his breakfast.

"M'used to it." Marran said as he chowed down on this bacon stuff. He didn't realize how much of it he'd already eaten.

He assumed it was good.

"What do you guys think?" Marran said, eyes shifting to Bentu "I bet you like lifting weights." He grinned.

Bentu chuckled. "You would be surprised what you pick up and do in my line of work," He replied. He looked down at his plate. It consisted of green tube noddles and a mushrooms in a thickish white/green sauce.
"You would also be surprised of the things I can get since I am technically not under this ships government's jurisdiction." he said with a grin.

"Aaah-aaah. Hold up there's a caveat to that Bentu. You may not be under its jurisdiction, but you are inside of it so you go through their channels and checkpoints, I bet." Marran replied, taking a bite out of the biscuit on his plate. "I mean c'mon, you just said that in the caf, where there are definitely some cameras laying about. You're just messin' with me."

Bentu grinned again as he sipped his coffee(again). "Perhaps I am. Perhaps I'm not. I just know that the all seeing eye of Sauron is not always all seeing," he replied. "In any case you are right that here is not the best place to discuses such things. Perhaps later then." he said as he went back to eating.
